Fingers are crossed that Pixar bounces back from the uncharacteristic critical disappointment that was Cars 2 with their next effort, Brave — a foray into Disney princess territory about a headstrong young Scottish lass (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) who defies tradition in her parents’ kingdom. A new trailer for the animated adventure promises no small measure of spunky girl power as our heroine Merida upends an archery contest where doofus candidates are vying for her hand in marriage. It’s not a traditional trailer so much as it is a scene from the film, but it conveys a sense of what to expect, tonally. (Watch the first full trailer here .) From what’s been released so far it seems Brave ‘s story will be its strength; the round, cartoony CG-animated character design doesn’t appeal much to me, but Merida’s spirit is infectious in this twist on the familiar medieval archery scenario. (That’s Billy Connolly voicing her father and Emma Thompson as her mom, in case you were curious.) Brave hits theaters June 22; leave your impressions below!

Pixar Hits a Girl Power Bullseye with New Brave Trailer
Forget John Carter ‘s controversial budget woes and terrible tracking for a minute; Wrath of the Titans has been threatening to be the first big biff of 2012 since it was announced, thanks largely to its poorly received predecessor, Clash of the Titans . The sequel’s initial Marilyn Manson-themed trailer didn’t help, either, but Warner Bros. have thankfully tightened things (and stopped lingering on Sam Worthington’s Kenny Powers ‘do) for a new trailer that actually promises some fantastic CG creature work. Bring on the lava monster thingy! Wrath of the Titans picks up ten years after the events of Clash , with Perseus (Worthington) tapped once again by Zeus to save the world, this time from the nefarious Titans and Olympian plotters we glimpsed in Immortals . (Thanks for that primer, Tarsem!) This time around Rosamund Pike is along for the ride as the warrior queen Andromeda, as well as folks like Toby Kebbell and Bill Nighy. This trailer tightens things up a bit, explaining the set up (Liam Neeson’s Zeus is under attack!) and packing a ton of CG creature looks into the span of a minute and a half. Honestly, that’s shaping up to be the draw of this Jonathan Liebesman-helmed sequel. All I want to see is some believable lava smoke monster giant action. The movies never get those guys quite right. Film lovers, take note: Benh Zeitlin’s highly lauded Sundance ’12 favorite Beasts of the Southern Wild is heading to theaters. Fox Searchlight, which acquired first time feature director Zeitlin’s pic out of the fest, will release the film in limited release on June 29; hit the jump for a full synopsis and peek at the festival award winner. The bayou-set film was the indie discovery to come out of Park City this year, and earned the fest’s Grand Jury Prize for drama. The magical realism-flavored drama should make for great counter-programming during blockbuster season — at least, you can be sure Fox Searchlight’s hoping so. The synopsis: In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions. I’m willing to give on-the-brink screenwriter Michael Bacall the benefit of the doubt based on what I’ve seen and heard of him so far, from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (which he co-wrote) to the Todd Phillips-produced teen party comedy Project X and 21 Jump Street (both of which he has scripting and story credits on), the latter of which is earning surprisingly glowing reactions from the blogoscenti. But I might have to draw some sort of line at the Tropic Thunder spin-off starring a fat, hairy Tom Cruise as slimy Hollywood exec Les Grossman , which apparently is not only really, seriously a thing but is, as Bacall describes, “a pretty heartfelt story.” “I wrote it for R because we had precedent with Tropic Thunder ,” he told Collider recently, promising a script unhampered by PG-13 boundaries. “It’s actually a pretty heartfelt story. I had a lot of meetings with Mr. Cruise and Mr. Stiller and it was crazy, it was a blast. I think we came up with some really fun stuff to give you an insight into who the guy is, so I’m hopeful that that’ll get up and running soon.” Cruise, he admits, may be pretty busy with non-Les Grossman gigs for a good while, so it’s hard to say when this insightful look at the man who won 8 Oscars, earned 400 million dollars at the box office, and saved Tugg Speedman’s career will hit theaters. I can’t imagine anything more exhausting than watching Cruise yell and dance to Flo Rida for the length of a feature film. Project X , meanwhile, captures the youth side of a dick-obsessed male culture if with an overabundance of sleaze, and 21 Jump Street is earning some of the most solid advance buzz I’ve heard in a while where high profile studio fodder is concerned. So maybe there’s hope yet?
