If Apes Rise, It Probably Won’t Be in San Francisco

Spoiler alert: the apes of San Francisco rise up at the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and put the human race on a collision course for extinction. If this scenario were to really happen, though, it wouldn’t likely start by the bay. BrowBeat contacted San Francisco zoo officials and the United States Department of Agriculture and found that only 25 apes currently reside in the Bay Area, meaning an ape uprising would likely be better contained than what’s presented in the late-summer blockbuster. Phew. Dodged a bullet there, humanity. [ Slate/BrowBeat ]

How Your Magazine-Movie Sausage is Made

Magazine editors are increasingly looking to place their stories at studios — for what it’s worth: “‘Hollywood is essentially in the business of not making movies,’ said Henry Finder, editorial director of The New Yorker . ‘They only make a movie when they run out of reasons not to make it. [… B]ut if I’m trying to get talent attached it might be easier for me to say, “Hey look, Brad Pitt, there’s this really cool story that was in Vanity Fair or Rolling Stone ” — it’s going to be based on that.'” Great! It beats Ouija . [ WWD via The Awl ]

In Honor of ‘Threequel’ Being Removed From the Dictionary, 9 Great Threequels

Sad news today from the world of words: the Concise Oxford English Dictionary announced that its 12th edition would no longer include the word “threequel.” (Also gone, “cassette player”; weep for the ’80s.) In honor of the dearly departed “threequel” — defined as “the third film, book, event, etc. in a series; a second sequel,” it will still appear in the less concise Oxford Dictionary of English — Movieline has assembled a list of nine great third films. Click ahead to disagree with the list!

Something Called The Worst Movie Ever! Made $11 Last Weekend

Last weekend was an especially brutal one for new releases, with Fright Night , Conan the Barbarian and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World all performing well below expectations . But numerous indies and other limited releases had it even worse: Renny Harlin’s 5 Days of War grossed less than $7,000 on two screens. The Patrick Dempsey/Ashley Judd heist romcom Flypaper barely broke $1,000 in a pair of theaters. But something called The Worst Movie Ever! had arguably the worst movie opening ever: $11 .

Even the Producers of Transmorphers Were Wary of Cowboys & Aliens

Since its release at the end of July, Cowboys & Aliens has grossed around $110 million worldwide. That’s not a washout on the level of The Worst Movie Ever! , but it’s still a big enough disappointment to possibly dissuade future Hollywood genre mixes — especially ones that deal with cowboy hats . Not that anyone should have been surprised by this underwhelming result — even the guys from The Asylum stayed away from Cowboys & Aliens .

Cannes crowd-pleaser The Artist — a black-and-white, silent (save the musical score) film about Hollywood in the ’20s — isn’t tampering with the poster that ushered in its success: The Weinstein Company is reusing the gorgeous shot that led to the movie’s best actor prize for Jean Dujardin. That’s When Megan Fox Went Swimming With Jason Segel and Chris O’Dowd

Here at Movieline HQ , we’ve been holding out hope that the untitled Judd Apatow continuation/quasi-sequel to Knocked Up (which has been filming with the working title of This Is Forty ) will feature a comeback performance from the terminally maligned Megan Fox. No word yet whether that will happen — despite co-star Paul Rudd singing her praises last week — but at least Fox is having fun on the set. Over the weekend she posted a picture of herself and co-stars Jason Segel and Chris O’D owd mugging for the camera in a swimming pool. Moviemaking! Just like breaking rocks! Ghost Musical Hits Broadway This Spring

Keeping with the trend of bringing movies to the stage , London’s musical adaptation of Ghost — the embarrassingly awesome ’80s classic featuring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg and the most erotic pottery wheel scene in the history of cinema — will hit Broadway this spring. Matthew Warchus, who is directing the Piccadilly Theatre production of Ghost will shepherd this one overseas, though no word yet if stars Richard Fleeshman and Caissie Levy will come along.
