James Cameron Eyes Post-Avatar Life With The Informationist

James Cameron said last Spring he disbanded his production company’s development wing, noting that aside from his deep-sea submarine dives, that he’s exclusively in the ” Avatar business – meaning Avatar 2 , Avatar 3 and possibly Avatar 4 . Well, that was then and this is now… But, Cameron’s production company has picked up rights to Taylor Stevens’ thriller novel The Informationist which he’ll likely direct and produce. “I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them,” he told the New York Times earlier in the year. While Avatar -orama is still on, Cameron is eyeing a filmmaking life beyond the 3-D behemoth. Avatar ‘s follow-up may not hit screens for another four to five years, so it may be quite a number of years before The Informationist actually makes its way into production. But for now the plan is that his Lightstorm Entertainment label will develop the adaptation for 20th Century Fox, THR reports . “This was an opportunity to continue our relationship with Fox and Jim Gianopulos beyond the Avatar films,” Landau said in a statement to THR. “We were drawn to this book because of the terrific, compelling narrative and the character, who typifies the strong female protagonists that have inhabited Jim’s work. In this case, Vanessa Munroe is essentially a mix of Lisbeth Salander and Jason Bourne.” Said Cameron: “Taylor Stevens’ Vanessa Michael Munroe is an intriguing and compelling heroine with an agile mind and a thirst for adventure. Equally fascinating for me is her emotional life and her unexpected love story.” Amazon’s description of The Informationist: Stevens’s blazingly brilliant debut introduces a great new action heroine, Vanessa Michael Munroe, who doesn’t have to kick over a hornet’s nest to get attention, though her feral, take-no-prisoners attitude reflects the fire of Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander….Thriller fans will eagerly await the sequel to this high-octane page-turner.” —Publishers Weekly, starred, boxed review Vanessa “Michael” Munroe deals in information—expensive information—working for corporations, heads of state, private clients, and anyone else who can pay for her unique brand of expertise. Born to missionary parents in lawless central Africa, Munroe took up with an infamous gunrunner and his mercenary crew when she was just fourteen. As his protégé, she earned the respect of the jungle’s most dangerous men, cultivating her own reputation for years until something sent her running. After almost a decade building a new life and lucrative career from her home base in Dallas, she’s never looked back. [ Sources: THR , The Film Stage , Amazon ]

Jolie-Pitt Kids Take On Acting In Maleficent

The Jolie-Pitt brood appear to have caught the acting bug from their folks. Last August, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie ‘s four-year-old daughter was cast as the young Princess Aurora in Maleficent , starring her superstar mother in the title role. Now, two siblings are set to join the production, and with a 2014 release date, could there be room for more? Jolie and Pitt’s son Pax, 8, and daughter Zahara, 7, are also set to appear in the big screen spin on the Sleeping Beauty tale, Us Weekly reports, adding that their parts will be small and they will not have speaking roles. Four year-old Vivienne joined the Maleficent cast as the young Princess Aurora. She eventually grows up to be the enemy to the evil Maleficent. Walt Disney Productions confirmed the addition in August. Daughter Shiloh, 6, meanwhile also nearly appeared in the movie, but she was apparently not in the mood during the day her part was supposed to shoot. She made an appearance in her dad’s feature The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in 2008. Maleficent , directed by Robert Stromberg ( Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End ), also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville. It is slated for a 3-D release in March, 2014. The pic retells the Sleeping Beauty story from the POV of villainess Maleficent. Fourteen year-old Fanning will play the grown-up Princess Aurora and gave a shout-out to Jolie in a recent E! News interview. “She’s so elegant. She looks just amazing as Maleficent, all her costumes and her makeup. You know, it’s like an elegant scary—sort of spooky. But you get used to it…It’s perfect.” [ Sources: Huffington Post , Yahoo , Us Weekly, E! ]

‘Emmanuelle’ Forever: Remembering Sylvia Kristel And Her Iconic Erotic Role

Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel, who passed away overnight at the age of 60 after battling cancer, defined the character of Emmanuelle as much as it defined her four-decade film career.  With her first appearance as the doe-eyed sensual adventuress and 1970s softcore icon in 1974’s  Emmanuelle ,  Kristel became synonymous with the character, which, in turn, became shorthand for an entire genre of art-house erotica: gauzy, softly lit tales of  women exploring their own sexual curiosity in exotic lands and pushing the boundaries of  social conventions. Without Emmanuelle and Kristel, would we even have EL James’ 50 Shades of Grey ? [ GALLERY: Images of Sylvia Kristel in 1974’s Emmanuelle ] Kristel’s career began as a model at the age of 17. She won the Miss TV Europe contest at 21 and the following year made her acting debut in Emmanuelle , which also marked the first film of director Just Jaeckin, who pioneered the soft-focused “arty” look of the series and its many imitators. (Jaeckin and Kristel both went on to enjoy successful careers in the world of erotica and later reunited for 1981’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover .) While the later films featured  amazing score contributions by Francis Lai , composer/musician Pierre Bachelet enjoyed one of his earliest hits with his theme song to Emmanuelle ,  which Lily Allen sampled in 2006. The tale of a bored diplomat’s wife in Bangkok learning to embrace her carnal desires, Emmanuelle was adapted from the 1967 French literary phenomenon of the same name. Credited to writer Emmanuelle Arsan, the book and its film adaptation detailed its heroine’s sexual exploits in the Far East with men and women, strangers, lovers, and assorted hedonistic expats. (The real behind-the-scenes saga of who exactly wrote Emmanuelle is dramatic in itself: French diplomat Louis-Jacques Rollet-Andriane is said to have been the original writer although his wife Marayat Rollet-Andriane accepted credit as “Emmanuelle Arsan,” supposedly to protect her husband’s public service position and, probably, to advance her own career.  Similarly juicy ground was explored in last week’s 50 Shades of Grey -style episode of Law & Order: SVU .) Despite attempts by French President Georges Pompidou to ban Emmanuelle — his predecessor Charles De Gaulle attempted to do the same for the book, which became a bestseller — the film was a hit; Columbia Pictures picked it up for distribution stateside on the strength of its popularity with female audiences and the sexploitation hit went on to gross $100 million worldwide, according to IMDb, spawning six sequels, made-for-television spin-offs, and numerous knock-off films. What Emmanuelle did for erotic cinema then was akin to the recent 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon: It made sexual fantasy an acceptable indulgence for mainstream and female audiences through its hazy, dreamlike, and (mostly) non-sleazy scenarios in which lust was unabashedly embraced as an utterly human impulse. Significantly, it told the tale from a woman’s perspective, one in which sexual teachers were almost as often other sexually experienced women as they were men. Kristel starred in four Emmanuelle films, returning to the series in later years in supporting roles. Emmanuelle IV (1984) marked the passing of the torch and the series’ decline into full-on camp, as Kristel’s signature character underwent surgery to emerge with a new look, portrayed by newcomer Mia Nygren. A series of Italian knock-off films under the Black Emanuelle (note the single “m” spelling differentation) moniker starred Laura Gemser, and the official Emmanuelle series devolved into the bizarre Emmanuelle in Space sequels starring Krista Allen. But Kristel remained the prototypical Emmanuelle, and the series’ best — and she’ll forever be the iconic face of its legacy. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

‘Iron Man 3’ And ‘Thor 2’ Storylines Share Common Threads − They’re ‘Personal’ And Vague

Walt Disney dropped a few more hints about the plots of Iron Man 3 and Thor 2″ The Dark World” on Thursday, and, well, I wish I could say they were scintillating. In an effort not to give away the store, both synopses are fairly vague, although both stress how “personal” the battles they’ll be waging are. According to the plot for Iron Man 3 , for example, the super hero’s alter ego Tony Stark  “finds his personal world destroyed” and then must rely on “his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him.”  Well, I certainly hope that new gold Iron Man suit they’ve been talking about comes into play because if this is going to be some sort of Marvel Comics version of a Bergman film, I’d rather watch Bergman. Over at Screen Rant , they’ve been reporting a much more detailed story that involves Ben Kingsley as the Chinese super-villain Mandarin and something called Extremis nano-technology serum that was developed to replicate the Super Soldier Serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America. Here’s the synopsis in its entirety: Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? As Screen Rant notes , the last line sounds like a reference to the Iron Man comics “Extremis” 2005-06 story arc written by Warren Ellis, in which Tony Stark is injected with the Extremis serum and becomes a cyborg-like being who doesn’t necessarily need his suit. Thor, meanwhile, must embark on “his most perilous and personal journey yet”.  There’s a little more meat on the bones of this synopsis: Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself.  In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness.  Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all. Iron Man 3 is set for a May 3, 2013 release.   Thor 2: The Dark World will hit theaters on Nov. 8, 2013 and both will screen in 3D. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

‘Justice League,’ ‘Avengers 2’ Set For Summer 2015 Face-Off

Prepare for a 2015 clash of the superhero titans: According to the LA Times, Warner Bros. is moving full steam ahead on their Justice League movie with an eye to hit theaters in Summer 2015, which also happens to be when Marvel’s set the blockbuster sequel to their enormously successful Avengers . The announcement via anonymous studio tipster comes on the heels of yesterday’s huge legal win in a battle over the rights to the Superman character, without which any Supes projects would have been delayed another few years pending rights clearances. LA Times reports that with a Justice League script on the way, the search for a director and stars is next as WB aims to begin filming next year. Per DC Comics lore, the Justice League is comprised of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and The Martian Manhunter. The plan is reportedly to debut the multi-hero team-up first, then spin-off characters into their own standalone films. Avengers 2 , meanwhile, has a jump on the development process; Marvel/Disney set a release date of May 1, 2015 back in August, and Avengers director Joss Whedon is returning to write and direct . All of which begs the question: Will the summer of 2015 be the biggest moviegoing season in history? (And if you had to choose, which side of the Marvel/DC culture wars are you on?) [ LA Times ]

Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’ Gets A 2015 Release Date

Marvel hero Hank Pym AKA Ant-Man will get his shot at the big screen in 2015, Disney announced today as they updated their slate of upcoming films. Also revealed: You’ll be able to see Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 in 3-D. Yawn . Let’s hear more about Ant-Man ! I’ll be honest: Even after Disney/Marvel unveiled the Ant-Man logo card at Comic-Con alongside the likes of Iron Man 3 , Thor: The Dark World , and Guardians of the Galaxy I had my doubts that Edgar Wright’s long-gestating superhero pic would make it to the screen in my lifetime. Now that it’s got a release date — albeit one in 2015, which is only three years away but feels like the distant future (seriously, how are we almost to the year 2015?!) — it finally feels like Ant-Man is happening. Also announced in Disney’s press release were dates for the Phineas and Ferb movie (moved up from 2014 to July 28, 2013), Saving Mr. Banks (December 20, 2013), DisneyNature’s Bears (April 18, 2014), “Disney Animation Untitled” (November 7, 2014) and “Pixar Animation Untitled” (November 25, 2015). Ant-Man , meanwhile, is slated to hit theaters on November 6, 2015. And while it’s unlikely since it came from an entirely different character who inherited the Ant-Man legacy (I know, I know), I’m holding out hope for a few scenes like this, because LOL.

Beyoncé Exits Clint Eastwood’s A Star Is Born

It looks like Clint Eastwood is facing another empty space, but this time the repercussions could hit the wallet. Beyoncé Knowles has quit his forthcoming remake of A Star is Born – and it’s even for the second time. The musical take on the well-known tale has been made three times by Hollywood. The superstar singer and actor is thought to have ended her involvement in the production due to delays in setting a start date for the film. The pic still lacks a male lead despite a three year search that has sailed through the names of a slew of top stars including Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Will Smith, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Robert Downey Jr., Eminem, Christian Bale, Jon Hamm and Bradley Cooper, according to The Guardian. This is not the first time Knowles took her leave from A Star is Born . She actually came back on board when Eastwood was named director in January last year after departing over production delays prior to the announcement. Eastwood hopes to pattern the latest Star in the vein of the 1976 version, which starred Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, which moved the story from the film biz to the music industry. The original version filmed in 1937 starred Fredric March and Janet Gaynor as an aging Hollywood actor who takes the young budding star under his tutelage. James Mason and Judy Garland took on A Star is Born in 1954. Speculation has now turned to jazz musician Esperanza Spalding as a replacement, but Warner Bros. wants to lock down a male lead before moving on with finding Beyoncé’s replacement. Bradley Cooper was the latest in the long line of male contenders to surface as the eventual choice. One of music’s most recognizable stars, Beyoncé made a box office splash with 2006’s Dreamgirls , which took in almost $155 million worldwide. Her starring role in thriller Obsessed took in a cool $73.83 million domestically in 2009, but not all has been box office gold. Cadillac Records bombed with only $8.1 million domestically. High And Low: A Cat In Paris Is Purr Enchantment, Little Shop Of Horrors Serves Up Shock And ‘Aww’

This week gives us a chic, Oscar-nominated animated feature from France and a boisterous musical based on a low-budget cult horror-comedy with a plot point in common: Both films include homages to giant monsters rampaging through urban areas — evidence that there’s often a thin line that separates High from Low. HIGH: A Cat in Paris (Cinedigm/$29.95 DVD; $39.95 DVD/Blu-Ray combo) Who’s Responsible: Written by Alain Gagnol and Jacques Rémy-Girerd; directed by Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli; features the voices of Marcia Gay Harden, Anjelica Huston and Matthew Modine. What’s It All About: Black cat Dino shuttles between two owners who aren’t aware of each other. He spends his days with Zoë, a young girl who’s been mute since the recent death of her gendarme father at the hand of notorious criminal Victor Costa (voiced by JB Blanc). At night, he slinks about the rooftops of the City of  Lights alongside a burglar named Nico (Modine). Both of Dino’s companions will collide when Costa crosses  Nico’s path — with Zoë’s police detective mother Jeanne (Harden) in hot pursuit. Why It’s Schmancy: The extraordinary advancements in computer-generated animation over the last few decades may now make it possible to realistically render every last hair on a Yeti, but there’s still room for old-fashioned illustration that calls to mind the artwork of beloved children’s stories. Kids, and adults even, should not live on Pixar alone (much less those crappy Ice Age movies), so mix things up with this gorgeous and eccentrically animated film, which earned a Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination this year. (Plus, you know, the movie is French and set in Paris, which automatically makes things more ra-sha-sha .) Why You Should Buy It: Both hardcore animation fans and kids with a penchant for drawing will enjoy the Many Lives of a Cat extra, which features art from previous, abandoned versions of the screenplay (one darker, one goofier) as well as pencil sketches and storyboards from the completed version. There’s also a silly short called Extinction of the Saber-Toothed Housecat , which screened theatrically with A Cat in Paris . LOW: Little Shop of Horrors: The Director’s Cut + Theatrical (Warner Home Video; DVD $14.96; Blu-Ray $34.99) Who’s Responsible: Written by Howard Ashman (based on his play, which was based on the 1960 screenplay by Charles B. Griffith);  lyrics by Ashman; music by Alan Menken;  directed by Frank Oz; starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Steve Martin and Vincent Gardenia What’s It All About: In this tuneful retelling of the old Roger Corman movie, nerdy Seymour (Moranis) becomes a celebrity when he discovers a strange alien plant, whom Seymour names “Audrey II” in honor of his co-worker and unrequited crush Audrey (Greene). Audrey II winds up being hungry for human flesh, and Seymour strikes a Faustian bargain with him. But once Seymour figures out the sinister plant’s true intentions, will it be too late to stop the “Mean Green Mother from Outer Space”? Why It’s Fun: Before Ashman and Menken helped to revitalize Disney animation with their acclaimed score for The Little Mermaid , they made their names with this outrageous horror-musical that skillfully veers from the sincere to the parodic to the terrifying. Greene, the only veteran of the stage version, belts the hell out of these songs while matching comic masters Moranis and Martin in the laughs department. There’s also a whiz-bang, what-the-hell energy throughout the movie that makes this a musical to remember. Why You Should Buy It (Again): The film’s theatrical release version featured a happy ending that strayed from the original stage play, but Oz’s original darker finale has now been fully restored. (There was a previous DVD with a much messier rough cut of the climax that quickly got yanked from shelves.) This version also features an introduction and commentary from Oz, some outtakes, a documentary and (in the Blu-Ray edition) a keepsake book. (Alas, still no extended version of “The Meek Shall Inherit” to match the version on the soundtrack album.) Now that both endings are available, audiences can debate which one they think works better. Whatever your take, this restoration allows us to see new facets of the performances by Moranis, Greene and the film’s hilarious doo-wopping Greek chorus (Tisha Campbell, Tichina Arnold and Michelle Weeks). Yep, ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ Will Be Converted To 3-D

It’s been rumored for years, but it looks like Warner Bros. is finally going to convert the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz to 3-D. Thank James Cameron and the Titanic 3-D rerelease that brought in cruise ship-loads of money. Temper that knee-jerk reaction for just a moment and consider: Could Wizard of Oz 3-D actually be a great thing for cinema? The Judy Garland musical about a Kansas farmgirl whisked away to a magical land was a game-changer in its own day, heralding the leap from black and white to color in one breathtaking cultural moment of Technicolor bliss. WB made the announcement today at a press event celebrating their 90th Anniversary; expect Dorothy to skip along the Yellow Brick Road and into your cerebral cortex in 2013. And while Wizard ‘s legacy has lived on in subsequent decades, trickling down tributaries of pop cultural influence as far reaching as the Muppets, to Japanese Lolita cosplay to a live-action prequel by the guy who made Evil Dead , there’s something wonderfully pure about the idea of an entirely new generation of youngsters getting an intro to Dorothy Gale’s fantastical Oz adventure on the big screen. Mimicking that transformative cinematic revelation from B&W to color could also be a big moment for the 3-D industry; imagine the black and white doldrums of Dorothy’s ho-hum homestead not only exploding in color, but in glorious three dimensional color once she awakens in Oz. It could blow kids’ minds, plus it opens the door to the next natural step: The Wizard of Oz 4-D . Opium highs and the odor or Munchkin sweat — the pinnacle of added-value cinema. [via Collider ]
