Peter O’Toole May Ditch Retirement For Mary Mother Of Christ

Russell Crowe and Darren Aronofsky are busy with Noah. Will Smith is apparently tackling the Biblical brother rivals Cain in Abel in his directorial debut. Paul Verhoeven is taking on the big man himself in Jesus of Nazareth and now his earthly mother will be getting a big screen focus. Mary Mother of Christ will show Jesus’ life up until about adolescence and the recently retired Peter O’ Toole is apparently coming out of retirement to join the project, which is being billed as a prequel to The Passion of the Christ . The project is still casting, based on a script by Benedict Fitzgerald, who co-wrote Mel Gibson’s bloody crucifixion pic and Barbara Nicolosi. 15 year-old Odeya Rush ( The Odd Life of Timothy Green ) will play the role of Mary. Peter O’ Toole is apparently heading out of retirement to play Simeon, who blessed the infant Jesus, and Julia Ormond will play the mother of John the Baptist, Elizabeth, according to The Guardian. Ben Kingsley, meanwhile is apparently eyeing to play the era’s evil monarch, King Herod and producers are apparently hoping Judi Dench will take the role of Anna the Prophetess, a widow between 84 and 105 years old. They are also going after Hugh Bonneville to play Satan. Texas-based televangelist/author Joel Osteen is executive producing the project, and Aussie filmmaker Alister Grierson, who directed James Cameron’s deep sea dive film Sanctum , will direct Mary Mother of Christ. Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ made over $611 million worldwide and over $370 million domestically. [ The Guardian ]

Colin Firth And Helen Mirren To Reprise British Monarch Roles In Separate Gigs

Colin Firth won an Oscar playing Britain’s King George VI in the 2010 historical drama The King’s Speech . And Dame Helen Mirren won her Academy Award playing the current U.K. monarch Queen Elizabeth II back in 2006 for her role in The Queen . Now both are set to wear their crowns again in two separate projects. Firth played Elizabeth II’s father, George VI in the Tom Hooper-directed feature about the WWII-era king who ascended the throne after his more dashing older brother abdicated in order to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson in a scandal that rocked the British Empire even as the clouds of war gathered in Europe. Also starring Helena Bonham Carter as his wife, Elizabeth, the film focused on the shy George VI, known to relatives and close friends as Bertie, who overcame a severe speech impediment to help lead his country to face the Nazi threat. The Press Association U.K. said that the new film is in the “very early stages,” but Bonham Carter and fellow King’s Speech co-star Geoffrey Rush are also likely to return. In this follow-up, Firth will return as George VI during the dark days of the Blitz, in which Buckingham Palace along with much of London during frequent night raids. Along with a Best Actor win for Firth, The King’s Speech won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Mirren, meanwhile, will take on the role of George VI’s heir, Queen Elizabeth II in a new stage play written by The Queen author Peter Morgan, according to The Guardian. Stephen Daldry will direct The Audience , which will explore her confidential meetings with her long line of British Prime Ministers from her first as a young Queen, Winston Churchill, to the current office holder, David Cameron. In The Queen , she meets with ’90s-era P.M. Tony Blair (played by Michael Sheen) around the time of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales capturing a period of great tumult for the British royal family. Appearing on Saturday Night Live shortly after her first stint playing Elizabeth II, Mirren famously said, “I’d like to say something for the record, although I played the Queen I am nothing like her. I may have been appointed Dame of the British Empire, but I am not all scones and teacups, I’m more biscuits and D-cups.” [ Sources: The Press Association , The Guardian ]

Jude Law: ‘We Want To Do’ A Sherlock Holmes 3

Robert Downey, Jr. is certainly an It boy at the moment after a summer of Avengers (and more on the way) as well as his current project, Iron Man 3 . Now it appears that he and Jude Law are ready to take on another installment of Sherlock Holmes , but Law said that while the pair are into the idea of a return to the eccentric British detective saga, “but Downey’s a busy boy…” Theoretically, Warner Bros. would be into a third match-up as well. The first installment in which Downey plays the title character, while Law takes on the role of Dr. John Watson, pulled in a massive $209 million-plus – and that was just in the U.S. The 2011 follow-up (both directed by Guy Ritchie incidentally) still cashed in with an impressive nearly $187 million domestically (and well-over a half-billion dollars worldwide). So will it happen or not? Jude Law gave some insight, as reported by Metro in the U.K. “There’s certainly talk of it and I know there’s a script being played around with, but Downey’s a busy boy and I’m a busy boy so we’ll see,” he said. “But we want to [do another one]. We’re a very happy team and we have a lot of fun and we also think there’s still a lot of legs in the duo.” Apparently Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce was tapped to complete a script for the possible third installment. Law is currently promoting his latest film, Anna Karenina where it debuted last at the Toronto International Film Festival. [Source: Metro ]

Innocence of Muslims Filmmaker Nakoula Basseley Unmasked By New York Tabloids

As protesters in Pakistan, Indonesia and Afghanistan raged against the anti-Islam film Innocence of Muslims over the weekend,  the media was also awash with photos and video of the Egyptian immigrant first tied to the crude inflammatory video, Nakoula Basseley , as he was escorted from his Southern California home looking like the Elephant Man so that he could be questioned by police. (See the video after the jump.) Basseley, who was first identified as Sam Bacile — a pseudonym that calls to mind the word “imbecile,” — covered his face with a white scarf and wore a newsboy’s cap on his head to protect his identity. His appearance didn’t remain hidden for long, however. Both the New York Daily News and the New York Post have run a picture of Basseley, sans disguise, sitting with one of the actors in Innocence of Muslims , Anna Gurji, who has been talking to a number of media outlets, and wrote a letter to the horror/fantasy writer Neil Gaiman about how she and her fellow cast members were duped by Basseley.  (Gurji also notes in her letter to Gaiman, which he posted on his website, that The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood  helmsman Alan Roberts (a.k.a. Robert Brownell) was the director of Innocence of Muslims.) Basseley, who’s reportedly a 55-year-old Coptic Christian who immigrated from Egypt, does not have the face of a man who sparked a wave of violence that led to the deaths of U.S. Ambassador to Libya  J. Christopher Stevens and three other American diplomatic staffers.  What’s that they say about the banality of evil? Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Report: Adele To Sing Skyfall’s 007 Theme Song

Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411 reports that U.K. mega-singer Adele will sing the title theme song to the next James Bond joint, Skyfall — though, grain of salt: He’s confirming his own scoop here, and the phrase “I think I can confirm for you what I said some months ago” doesn’t inspire total confidence. But it’s Friday, and a girl can dream! And Friedman’s got it right when he argues that “Adele’s sound is the quintessential James Bond sound.” Also, those other recent 007 themes did roundly suck. Bring on Agent Adele! [ Showbiz 411 ]

WATCH: The New Wreck-It Ralph Trailer Is The Best Thing Ever

Children of the Nintendo generation, take heed: Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph was made just for you. In addition to setting up a rather compelling hero’s journey for video game character Wreck-It Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) — an arcade villain who goes “game-hopping” to reinvent himself as the good guy — the animated adventure stuffs in more Gen X/Y video game references than you can count. Who will weep for Bowser as he gives his testimony at AA for baddies!? I say Nintendo generation (and by that, I mean NES) because we bridged the gap between the 8-bit/Atari era and the slicker Xbox crowd that followed years later. We who popped quarters into stand-ups and owned Sega Dreamcasts know the sorrow of saying goodbye. Wreck-It Ralph features the voices of Sarah Silverman as Vanellope von Schweetz, Ralph’s 9-year-old new BFF from the Candyland-like game Sugar Rush, Jane Lynch as Sergeant Calhoun from the first-person shooter Hero’s Duty, and Jack McBrayer as Fix-It Felix, the handyman hero of Ralph’s world. Also onboard bringing Wreck-It Ralph to life: Dennis Haysbert, Mindy Kaling, Alan Tudyk, Rachael Harris, Ed O’Neill, Adam Carolla, Horatio Sanz, and Edie McClurg. Credit for the film’s fresh, zingy spirit goes to director Rich Moore, veteran of The Simpsons and Futurama , and a script credited to Phil Johnston ( Cedar Rapids ) and first-timer Jennifer Lee. Wreck-It Ralph hits theaters November 2. Verdict: Jokes! Drama! Q*bert! Maybe I’m still high off the nostalgia factor but I declare this a must-see. [Via Yahoo ]

Brad Pitt Says Hollywood $Millions$ ‘Don’t Work Now’

It is by far and away no secret that Hollywood compensation for a certain cadre of stars have been rocketing beyond the stratosphere for some time now, but one A-lister, in the form of Brad Pitt , says that the era of paychecks reaching into the tens of millions for some may be coming to a close. Both he and his partner Angelina Jolie have topped (or nearly so) the scales for their movies in the past decade, with Pitt garnering a cool $25 million per pic. Not bad, but almost a paltry sum when compared to Tom Cruise, for instance, which Forbes listed as commanding a cool $75 million in 2012. But Pitt says he thinks that the conditions for unbelievable sums (at least for the bottom 99.7 per cent) may be heading back down to the mere stratosphere. “Yeah, that thing died,” Pitt said when asked if fellow A-listers can still easily command a $10 or so million per movie, according to BBC . “That arithmetic doesn’t really work right now…that deal’s not flying these days.” Going further on the economics of Hollywood right now, Pitt added, “”It’s a really interesting time. A lot of the studios have been challenged because of the economic downturn as well, so they’ve been betting on bigger, more tent pole kinds of things. At the same time that opens up a vacuum for really interesting new filmmakers to come in.” Pitt debuted Killing Them Softly in Cannes and is a producer on the title that will head to U.S. theaters next month. But not all films will automatically bring out the masses simply because their idols are in them. Nearly two hours of staring at Robert Pattinson sans vampirism failed to bring out the legions of people who otherwise crave to hear any tidbit possible about the latest travails of their obsession’s personal life. Cosmopolis , for instance, has only cashed in at $5.3 million worldwide so far (and only just over $700K in the U.S. – ouch). “You take the roles for the roles,” said Pitt. “And you’ve just got to balance economics like everyone does.”

David Koepp on SWATH 2: ‘I Couldn’t’ See Sequel Being Made Without Kristen Stewart

David Koepp couldn’t envision a Snow White and the Huntsman  sequel without Kristen Stewart — which is one reason he says he’s no longer involved in the project. Koepp — who scripted  Jurassic Park , the original 2002  Spider-Man  movie and co-wrote and directed this weekend’s new bike-messenger thriller Premium Rush — told Movieline that he departed the project because he had worked on a script idea “that I really liked” involving Stewart’s character. “And their situation, I hear, changed a little, so they weren’t interested in pursuing that idea anymore.” Koepp said that was a sign for him to move on. “I felt like there was a good path with her, but then they wanted to explore a different thing that I had no ideas for,” he explained. “If you don’t have any ideas, you should probably put your pen in your backpack and go home.” As a result, he added, “we agreed to part ways and stay friends.” When I asked Koepp if he could see a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman being made sans Stewart, he replied: “Well, I couldn’t. That was why I felt like I couldn’t follow through.” Stewart’s involvement in a Snow White sequel has been hotly debated since reports broke in late July that she cheated on her on- and 0ff-screen Twilight love interest Robert Pattinson with  SWATH director Rupert Sanders and apologized for it. On Aug. 15, Deadline  reported that, internally, Universal is discussing whether to focus the next movie on the Huntsman character played by Chris Hemsworth , who is fast proving himself to be leading-man material. Universal also bought a crime drama called 90 Church: The True Story of the Narcotics Squad from Hell for Sanders. Nell Alk is an arts and entertainment writer and reporter based in New York City. Is Disney Rebooting The Rocketeer?

I suppose it makes sense: According to Vulture rumor-slinger Claude Brodesser-Akner, Disney’s new regime under Alan Horn is developing a remake of 1991’s The Rocketeer — a box office disappointment that nevertheless built a cult following owing to its retro-futuristic vibe, Billy Campbell’s irresistible hair, and Jennifer Connelly ‘s Jennifer Connelly-ness. The Rocketeer told the story of Cliff Secord, a square-jawed airplane pilot who battles Nazis with the help of a rocket jetpack in 1930s California. Audiences rejected it upon release, but the film won dedicated fans (myself included) in subsequent years. The report, based on studio spy whispers, points out that such a reboot might be successful thanks to its similarities with Marvel’s Iron Man properties — both were adapted from comics, both involve a hero in a supercool metal suit flying into action against baddies, etc. One way of updating the Rocketeer property could be to make it slick and high-tech and even more Iron Man -esque… though the idea of Disney courting such obvious parallels to Marvel’s best-loved new Avengers superhero doesn’t make much sense. If Disney reboots The Rocketeer , I can’t imagine fans of the original comics and the Joe Johnston-directed film would accept anything less than a faithful period setting, in keeping with the original story’s spirit and sense for nostalgic idealism; good luck finding a Cliff Secord with hair as phenomenally perfect as 90s-era Campbell. I mean – JUST… LOOK… AT THIS HAIR! YOU GUYS . On second thought, let me put this out there: Armie Hammer as Cliff. Jennifer Lawrence as Jenny. Michael Fassbender as Neville Sinclair. Discuss.
