10 First Impressions of the New Machine Gun Preacher Poster

I’m sworn to secrecy regarding my recent previewing of Machine Gun Preacher , director Marc Forster’s forthcoming biopic about Sam Childers, a Pennsylvania junkie ex-con-turned-born-again-orphanage-building-gunslinging savior of Sudan. But there’s nothing that I or anybody else can say about the film that isn’t summed up in its new one-sheet featuring star and co-producer Gerard Butler, which is like whoaaa .

Happy 53rd Birthday, Madonna! What’s Her Most Underrated Onscreen Moment?

Yes, I already toasted Madonna’s birthday yesterday in that hilarious ‘Verbal Vogueing’ clip you watched over and over again (RIGHT?), but it’s time to make The Mother of Reinvention’s 53rd anniversaire official with the Movieline treatment. Now, as a functioning human being, I understand that Madonna isn’t the best actress of our generation, but I contend that she’s had some under-heralded moments in film. Do you have a favorite underrated Madonna moment on the big screen?

Report: The Weinstein Company Bringing Chocolat, Cinema Paradiso to Broadway

It looks like The King’s Speech won’t be the only Weinstein Company film headed to Broadway in the near future. The New York Post reports that Harvey and Bob Weinstein are planning to “mine the Miramax and Weinstein Co. vaults for material for eight to 10 projects.” Already on deck is Finding Neverland , with Chocolat and perhaps Cinema Paradiso on the way. Maybe this could be a way for the notoriously sequel-averse Harvey Weinstein to continue Rounders ? “Pay That Man His Money” could be a show-stopper! [ NYP ]

Terminator Twitter Account Mistakenly Looking for ‘Sarah Conner’

Looks like the Terminator has taken his dogged search for the mother of the future savior of mankind to the Twitterverse, where he’s going through every Sarah on Twitter, one by one . (That is, when he’s not telling the T-1000 to suck it in binary.) There’s just one problem: The social media-savvy T-800 is looking for “Sarah Conner,” not Sarah Connor. Oops! Proof he’ll become obsolete soon enough? [ @111001001101010 ]

In Memoriam: Taylor Momsen’s Acting Career

No one wants their funeral celebrated on an inconsequential Tuesday afternoon, but Taylor Momsen’s acting career will have to settle for an overheated, late-summer burial. The Gossip Girl alumna claims she’s done acting and wants to focus solely on her music career. To be fair, Pretty Reckless is kind of a cool band. But to be fairer to the Movieline populace, this means we have to mourn her body of work. Join us as we recount a bunch of movies you probably didn’t even know Ms. Momsen was in.

How Did Marty and Doc Brown First Meet?

Over at Mental Floss , a question was posed yesterday that’s plagued fans of the Back to the Future films for years: “Is it ever explained why Marty hangs out with Doc Brown?” Before long, an official-ish answer surfaced, courtesy of BTTF co-writer Bob Gale. The answer won’t shatter your world, but at least it puts those suggestions of inappropriate older man-teenage boy relations to bed.

Matthew McConaughey Set to Play Ex-Stripper in Channing Tatum Pic Magic Mike

When Channing Tatum takes Alex Pettyfer under his wing to teach him the ins and outs of male stripper life in Steven Soderbergh ‘s Magic Mike , the young bucks will have another ex-stripper on hand with extensive shirtless experience: Matthew McConaughey . Best casting move in a while, Hollywood — doubly so for you, Matty McC. Shall we study the history books to guess whether or not McConaughey will strip down himself as Dallas, “a former exotic dancer who now owns and operates Xquisite, the club where ‘Magic Mike’ works?” [ Variety ]

Who Should Play Patti Smith in the Just Kids Movie?

Rock legend Patti Smith set the literary world on fire last year with her memoir Just Kids , a sensitive, longing look at her friendship with the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The book mostly chronicles their years in New York prior to her fame as a punk poetess from the mid-’60s to the mid-’70s — before Horses revolutionized Ginsbergian rock. Now word is out that Smith is adapting the National Book Award winner into a screenplay with Gladiator scribe John Logan. Who should play the inimitable lady on the big screen?

Indie Horror Pic All the Boys Love Mandy Lane Still in Distribution Hell

Jonathan Levine has directed two feature films ( The Wackness and next month’s 50/50 ) since seeing his 2006 directorial debut, the indie horror pic All the Boys Love Mandy Lane , infamously go from a Weinstein Co. pick-up to a Weinstein Co. cast-off sold to Senator Entertainment, who then went out of business themselves. Secretary-General Invites Whistleblower to Screen at U.N. Headquarters

It might have taken nearly a year, but United Nations leadership is finally aligning itself with The Whistleblower , the new film based on the experience of a peacekeeper who witnessed U.N. complicity in sex-trafficking in Bosnia in the late ’90s/early ’00s. And while Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon might not yet have clambered aboard the film’s Rachel Weisz awards-season bandwagon, he’s definitely paving its road ahead with an invitation for the film to screen at U.N. headquarters in New York.
