Friday Box Office: Apes Rise Against The Help and Final Destination 5

Consider this the big screen version of gridlock. The simians from Rise of the Planet of the Apes headed a crowded box office on Friday night earning $7.8 million in ticket sales, though both The Help ($7.5 million) and Final Destination 5 ($7.3 million) stayed within striking distance of the No. 1 spot. As for the other newcomers, 30 Minutes or Less earned enough to land in fourth place, while Glee: The 3D Concert Movie took a slushie to the face in sixth. Your Friday Box Office is here.

Why Renny Harlin Made a Movie About the 2008 Russo-Georgian War

Renny Harlin ( Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, 12 Rounds ) is not the first director — or the second or third or heck, the 20th — you’d expect to direct a serious movie about a recent political conflict that resulted in numerous human rights violations, civilian deaths, and tenuous relations between Russia and neighboring Georgia. But that’s just what the genre veteran did in the Aug. 19 pic 5 Days of War , telling The New York Times he “wanted to shift to films that he said would ‘allow me to look at myself in the mirror’ in the morning.” Congrats, Renny! You’re that much closer to making up for Cutthroat Island . [ NYT ]

In Honor of Hong Kong Phooey, 5 Other Hanna-Barbera Characters Worthy of the Big Screen

Congrats to Eddie Murphy, who just picked up voicing duties in the live action/animated movie Hong Kong Phooey , the Hanna-Barbera cartoon that only produced 16 episodes but forever validated the legitimacy of dog custodians and their mastery of martial arts. Scatman Crothers provided the original voice of “the number one super guy,” but the Shrek / Mulan firebrand will make a worthy substitute. Does this mean we should anticipate more Hanna-Barbera live-action/animation takes in the future? Here are the five best candidates for that treatment.

The Dark Knight Rises Security Team Used Standing to Deter Set Spy Pics

“The first woman I ran into, one of the PAs, I think, said, ‘You can’t take pictures here.’ It was on the sidewalk and I said, ‘I know my rights; I’m on a public sidewalk,'” paparazzo Jared Wickerham told Moviefone about the process behind the now-famous photos he snapped on the set of The Dark Knight Rises . “So she went up to one of the security guards and came back and just decided to stand in front of me. Since I shoot sports, I had a nice, long lens, so I just took a few steps back and shot around her.” [ Moviefone ]

Dirty Dancing Remake Reportedly Has No Script, Casting Ideas

The Internet had the time of its life bashing plans for a new Dirty Dancing when Lionsgate announced it would remake the ’80s classic earlier this week. Perhaps that teeth-gnashing was slightly premature; according to director Kenny Ortega, Dirty Dancing is likely to stay in the corner for quite a while before heading to theaters.

The Dark Knight Rises Production to Fill Pittsburgh with Gunshots

Citizens of Pittsburgh, your local authorities have a message for you: If you hear gunshots, carnage, or superhero antics in your streets this weekend, do not assume that it’s because The Dark Knight Rises is filming. According to a report, Pittsburgh police want the city’s residents to dial 911 any time a mysterious noise disturbs them — even if it’s clearly just Christian Bale hollering about craft services and commanding Anne Hathaway to step away from his finger sandwich. The authorities have Pittsburgh’s best interest in mind, but still — I hope they aren’t deluged with reports of a rowdy thug who keeps claiming to be through with batsuits professionally. VIDEO: Alec Baldwin Puts John Krasinski in a Yankees Bikini for New Era

Throughout the baseball season New Era has released some fairly hilarious commercials-cum-viral videos featuring Alec Baldwin and John Krasinski and the increasing stakes of their Yankees/Red Sox fan rivalry. The third spot has come online just in time for the latest on-field Yanks/Sox tangle — the teams meet for three games in Boston this weekend — and while it isn’t as funny as the previous two, it does feature Krasinski in a Yankees bikini. Photoshopped, but hey: still comedy!
