Usher Dicusses Racy Lyrics On ‘Lil Freak’: ‘It Happens’

Singer says latest single was inspired by real-life experiences. By Shaheem Reid Usher Photo: MTV News It’s not just lyrics — Usher said that when he sang about asking girls to get him girls on the track “Lil Freak,” he wasn’t just entertaining. The song was inspired by real life. “Yeah,” he laughed when asked if he gets female friends to scout and bring him other females to engage in group fun. “I mean, I wrote about it,” he continued. “It happens in this day and time. Those are the best chicks to be friends with, honestly.” “Hey girl, I see you like that,” he sings on the track. “You gettin’ excited/ You rockin’ like a pro with it, girl/ By the way, you got right on that/ Picked the chick you wanted/ And now you in the corner kissin’ on a girl/ I’m about to have a minaj with these here ladies/ Look at those freaks at the bar looking for a star.” The video for “Lil Freak” recently premiered and in the clip Nicki Minaj, rocks a sexy Cruella DeVil hairstyle — half black, half blond. She helps lure a woman into Usher’s underground playground. “The video is freaky,” Nicki told MTV News recently about the six-minute-plus video. “And it’s a great concept, a great story line. It felt just like one of the sequels to ‘Saw.’ It was dope.” “Lil Freak” along with the singles “Papers” and “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” are on Usher’s upcoming Raymond v. Raymond, in stores March 30. Nicki Minaj Calls Lil Wayne’s Jail Time ‘An Emotional Roller Coaster’

‘We wouldn’t wish it on any crew in the game,’ she says at mtvU Spring Break. By Jayson Rodriguez Nicki Minaj Photo: Johnny Nunez/ Getty Images It’s been a trying time for the Young Money camp since Lil Wayne began his yearlong prison bid. The rapper’s sentencing and subsequent jail stint were delayed numerous times before he finally entered New York’s Rikers Island. Nicki Minaj called the experience “confusing.” “His actual time to go in had been changing, up and down,” she said during mtvU Spring Break. “So it’s been an emotional roller coaster for all of us involved because we never knew when the last text message or that last hug was the actual last text message or hug. It was very, very strange. We wouldn’t wish it on any crew in the game.” Lil Wayne took advantage of the additional time he was afforded to shoot more videos — he shot nearly 20 clips leading up to his imprisonment — and to make a guest appearance during Young Jeezy’s set on Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour stop in New York. While Wayne is away, his team has pledged to keep the YM torch scorching hot. Drake vowed to take the lead in Wayne’s absence. “I’m gonna do everything I told him I would do, what I said in the song [‘Over’]: keep us afloat till he gets back,” he told MTV News. “You won’t even notice he’s gone. Promise.” Minaj described the unusual circumstances that led to her, Drake and the rest of the Young Money crew appearing at mtvU Spring Break without Lil Wayne. Last year, Wayne was a part of the festivities, which also included performances by Jim Jones, Asher Roth and Kid Cudi. He brought Drake and Nicki along as guests during his set. Now, it’s their turn to apply the lessons Wayne taught them, Nicki said. “We remember last year being at MTV Spring Break, and Wayne was obviously the headliner,” she recalled. “He’s so much more than a headliner, he’s a person that I look at, and I can’t believe this guy is still going, after 20 to 30 minutes in the hot sun. To not have him here, it’s like a life lesson for all of us — always work as if we have no one else to depend on — and that’s what he teaches us. He did, like, 1,000 videos before he went in, knowing that he had to go to jail. A lot of us wouldn’t do that. A lot of us would be curled up on a ball like, ‘Oh my God, my life is about to be over.’ So shout-out to Lil Wayne. We’re honored that he chose each and every one of us, handpicked us. And we love him.” Young Money will appear on the “Sucker Free Countdown” Sunday at noon on MTV2 when Funkmaster Flex will interview the camp. Whose performance did you like best at Spring Break? And DJ Holiday told MTV News that Gucci is already planning to record another mixtape, The Writing’s on the Wall, as soon as he’s a free man. Drake, Nicki Minaj Talk Jay-Z And Lil Wayne At Madison Square Garden

‘It was the stuff that dreams are made of,’ Minaj says of appearing on the stage with Jay-Z and her Young Money boss. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by MTV News staff Drake Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Lil Wayne and his Young Money cohorts Drake and Nicki Minaj stormed the stage at Madison Square Garden two weeks ago for a guest turn during Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour . The Roc Nation head called the spot “fantastic.” Turns out, Drake and Nicki Minaj thought so too. Young Jeezy, who welcomed the trio to his set, first introduced Nicki Minaj to thunderous applause. The Queens native said that prior to the concert, she and everyone else in Wayne’s camp were spending time with the rapper after he learned he had an extra day of freedom. Lil Wayne was scheduled to turn himself in to begin his prison stint that afternoon. A fire at the courthouse , however, prevented Wayne’s sentencing. With some time to kill, the crew got a phone call to put the plans in motion. “We were just talking to Wayne and he was being his crazy self,” Nicki told MTV News. “I got a call from Gee [Wayne’s co-manager and former executive at Roc-A-Fella] and the first name I heard was Jay-Z and I thought, ‘There’s no way Jay-Z approved me to be on this show.’ And I was like, ‘Do I want to?’ I’m on the next thing, smoking. I canceled meeting that day and the next day. “Madison Square Garden? I’m from New York,” she continued. “This means the world to me — to be there with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Drake. It was the stuff that dreams are made of for a girl. Girls aren’t usually in those unique little circles.” Drake heaped praise on his boss, Lil Wayne, for sharing his extra day (that turned into an extra week) with his fans. “It was a moment where people thought Wayne had gone in and the surprise was he had an extra day, and a selfless individual came out and showed up for the people of New York,” Drake told MTV News. “The city he got convicted in, of all places. It was a great night.” The “Best I Ever Had” MC even joked about violating Jay-Z’s all-black dress code that was set for the festivities. “That’s just who I am,” Drake said, laughing about his all-white getup. “Young Angel.” Related Videos Nicki Minaj And Drake Speak On Their Surprise Blueprint 3 Show Related Artists Drake Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj Isn’t ‘Rushing’ Her Debut Album

‘I’d love to put an album out this year, but I don’t believe in rushing things,’ Young Money MC says. By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj ‘s latest string of guest appearances have garnered her plenty of attention — actress Michelle Trachtenberg even posted a vlog of herself singing Nick’s verse to Robin Thicke’s “Shakin’ it 4 Daddy.” The blogs are also buzzing about her verse (and Freddy Krueger look) in the Ludacris “My Chick Bad” video, as well as her appearance in the Mariah Carey “Up Out My Face” clip. Will these famous collaborators return the favor and jump on Minaj’s debut LP? “I’m sure they will. You know what’s funny — I thinking I’m gonna have more features than I even wanna put on my album,” she told MTV News recently. “I’ve gotten great feedback from artists I look up to and never thought I’d work with. They’re already in line to be on the project. But it’s like, ‘Do I want to put out a debut album with a 1,000 features on it or do I wanna finally showcase Nicki?’ I’m not worried about features at all because I’ve been blessed to come in the game and work with top-notch artists from the inception of my career.” Those guest appearances and her verses on the Young Money album will have to tide her fans over for the time being — she’s just getting around to recording her album. “I’m the very beginning stage of the recording process of my album,” she explained. “I have songs that where I am now, they aren’t a great representation of me to where I’m at musically. I wanna start from scratch but I do have my single and it’ll be out. It’s gonna be ‘Massive Attack.’ “With the album, just like with my mixtape, I never like to rush it,” she added. “With the album, I think it’s more important that people get accustomed to seeing a female rapper again. Before I drop an album, people need to come out and see. People don’t even know what a female rapper does. We’re so not used to seeing it. It’s nonexistent in categories. We don’t get nominated. I need to work [the people] up to accepting a female rapper again and accepting my style and all of that — then the album will come. Honestly, I’d love to put an album out this year, but I don’t believe in rushing things either. We’ll see.” Related Artists Nicki Minaj
