Will Ferrell Explains the Origins of Casa de mi Padre, His Spanish Telenovela Comedy

Will Ferrell movies can usually be summed up as “Will Ferrell as a…” and you get it. Will Ferrell as a reporter? That’s funny. Will Ferrell as a NASCAR driver? Also funny. But Will Ferrell as a Spanish soap opera action hero? Casa de mi Padre is a Spanish language film starring Ferrell as a rancher’s son who goes to war with drug dealers to protect his brother’s girl (Genesis Rodriguez). Where, exactly, did he come up with this idea? At the film’s press junket today, Ferrell said he’d had this idea for five to seven years. The inspiration struck him, as such ideas do, during a 2:00 a.m. channel surfing session. “I’m probably like so many people, turning on the television going through the channels at two in the morning and landing on a telenovela going, ‘What is this? Why are they so over the top? This is amazing,’” Ferrell said. “That’s my exposure to them. I’d always had this idea of that’s such a heightened, funny world that it would be really funny to see myself in that world. I thought God, you’ve never seen an American comic in a foreign language film and have them commit to it in a way that’s believable. I thought that’s something if you could pull it off, that would be an original movie.” The TV dramas that pop up on Univision or Telemundo in the states take the drama pretty seriously. You can tell Ferrell thinks it’s funny by all the intentional mistakes (continuity errors, visible boom mics, stuffed animatronic animals and mannequin stand-ins) intentionally placed in Casa de mi Padre , which is written by Andrew Steele and directed by Matt Piedmont, both alumni of Saturday Night Live and Funny or Die . “It technically really isn’t an homage to telenovelas,” Ferrell said. “Telenovela is kind of the broad description for it but it’s an homage to that, it’s an homage to the Mexican spaghetti western. It’s an homage to bad moviemaking, continuity mistakes. It’s an homage to overacting. It’s an homage to stuffed wild animals. Once we started writing the script and talking about how we were going to shoot the movie, we saw this was a real opportunity to play around with a bunch of different elements.” The script by Steele was written in English, then the dialogue translated into Spanish. Ferrell only speaks en espanol ; only an American character delivers a few lines of English. Of course, now Ferrell only remembers the naughty words. “ Chingado is a good one,” he said. “I love that word. Chinga this, chinga that. That’s a good word, but that’s commonly used. Chinga is the F word.” Ferrell got over the language barrier on his first day of filming. “For some reason the schedule worked out to where I literally had like a two page monologue in Spanish on the first day. Once I got the first couple takes under my belt, and I could see people watching behind the monitors going, ‘His Spanish is okay. It’s not that bad.’ Then I thought oh, okay. I’m going to make my way through this. Had I kept up with the Spanish, I’d be really good right now. But I didn’t. I could make my way at a resort. At the Four Seasons in Mexico I’d probably be okay.” Fulfilling his dream of starring in a Spanish language melodrama, Ferrell was proud to use his box office clout to get an outrageous film made. “This ranks up there as one of the things I’ve gotten to do which you can only be so lucky to be in a position to take risks like this.” Casa de mi Padre opens March 16. Hollie Cavanagh on American Idol: The Female Favorite?

Hollie Cavanagh was born in England, but lives in Texas. Hence her unusual accent. This American Idol semifinalist also looks her age, something that can’t always be said for 18-year olds on the show. So it’s safe to say we didn’t expect to hear the major pipes that emanated from Cavanagh last night, as she simply stood at the microphone for a cover of Christina Aguilera’s “Reflections,” and sounded very much like that incredible star herself. Jennifer Lopez told Hollie she thinks she can win the whole thing and we agree. We’d make her the very early favorite, along with Phillip Phillips on the men’s side. Do you agree? Chelsea Sorrell on American Idol: An Underwhelming Underwood

Let’s give Chelsea Sorrell a couple props: It’s not easy to go first on any American Idol audition show, especially with your very first live performance. It takes courage to cover possibly the greatest contestant in series history, Carrie Underwood. But the gamble didn’t really pay off for Sorrell last night, as Randy Jackson noted the questionable song choice and J. Lo – who later admitted she was too nice to the guys the evening before – referred to the rendition as “nasally.” Ouch. Watch the cover of “Cowboy Casanova” now and compare it to our favorite from the night, Hollie Cavanagh . Chelsea Sorrell – “Cowboy Casanova”

Andy Samberg ‘Psyched’ To Be Adam Sandler’s Son

Trailer for ‘That’s My Boy,’ starring the ‘SNL’ duo, debuts Thursday on MTV.com. By Josh Wigler Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler in “That’s My Boy” Photo: Columbia Pictures Peanut butter and jelly, popcorn and movies, baseball and springtime — all winning combinations that never fail to put a smile on your face. On June 15, 2012, you’ll be able to add another prized combo to that list: Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg. The two “Saturday Night Live” legends are joining forces for a new Happy Madison comedy called “That’s My Boy,” hitting theaters this June. In the film, Sandler stars as a down-on-his luck man trying to reconnect with his estranged family on the week of his son’s (Samberg) wedding. It’s a bizarre setup — after all, Sandler is only 12 years older than Samberg in real life — but, as one would hope, the film offers a reliably ridiculous explanation for the small age gap. If the basic premise and the involvement of actors Sandler and Samberg don’t have you fired up for “That’s My Boy,” just wait: The first official trailer is set to drop on MTV.com on Thursday, and Samberg himself couldn’t be more excited for it. “I never thought I would actually get to be in a movie with Sandler, certainly not playing his son,” Samberg told MTV News ahead of the trailer’s release. “For me, I’ve been such a huge fan of his for so long; I used to listen to ‘Billy Madison’ on audio cassette in my Walkman. I’m a real-deal Sandler fan. I’d definitely put [this experience] up there with being cast on ‘SNL’ or any of the other things I’ve gotten to do — making [Lonely Island] records with my buddies — things I’ve always dreamed of happening but never thought they would. I’m pretty psyched.” As a self-declared “real-deal Sandler fan,” Samberg was far from disappointed when it came to watching the comedy legend do his thing on the “That’s My Boy” set. “Sandler is basically on fire in this movie,” he said. “In real life, he’s about the sweetest dad I’ve ever seen. But in the movie, he’s a bit of a train wreck. If we were making a documentary, it would be called ‘Sweet Loving Dad.’ But I think [‘That’s My Boy’] is going to be a little bit more entertaining and edgy than that.” Stay tuned to MTV News on Thursday for the “That’s My Boy” trailer premiere! Will Action-Packed Final Trailer Fix Things for John Carter?

It’s no secret that Disney’s been scrambling to counteract bad tracking and mixed word of mouth on their mega-budgeted March actioner John Carter , so it’s worth a look to see what they’ve done with the latest (and “final”) trailer for the Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptation. And behold! A trailer filled with nearly everything that makes John Carter worth going to see: Alien creatures, political intrigue, Taylor Kitsch in a loincloth, Lynn Collins as Dejah Thoris, and lots of inventive, fantastical action. The trailer doesn’t bother trying to explain what Kitsch’s American Civil War veteran John Carter is doing on the strange world of Mars, caught between various factions in a planetary war who each want his heightened battle skills to use as their secret weapon. Nor does it try to woo the ladies, or at least what studio execs think of as the traditionally-minded romantic-leaning female demographic, by spending too much time on Carter’s series-defining love affair with the Martian princess. Nope, this trailer gives us action, and from the start: John Carter leaps over his enemies in battle, slashing his way through to victory so well that even Mark Strong’s all-knowing Thern leader has to ask, “Who is that??” We glimpse the film’s breathtaking aerial battles, but those podracer-esque aircrafts are barely seen. Star Wars similarities , begone! The trailer ends as it begins — with a John Carter fight, this time in an arena against a giant white ape. It’s one of the better action scenes of the film, and yet doesn’t reveal too much. Disney’s already (most likely) got the Burroughs diehards in the bag, not to mention whatever Pixar fans may come out to support/check out Finding Nemo and WALL-E director Andrew Stanton in his live-action debut. Does a trailer like this engage the uninitiated male demo enough to turn the tide of bad, or underwhelming, word of mouth? And if Disney doesn’t get a certain female audience with this clip, Kitsch’s niche Friday Night Lights following aside, is that okay? As a lifelong fan of sci-fi and fantasy myself, I was immersed in the world of John Carter as soon as he hit the sandy dunes of Mars. If you aren’t interested by now in at least checking out John Carter , no amount of calculated marketing is likely to change that. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Lindsay Lohan has arrived in New York City to begin rehearsals for Saturday Night Live, and while she’s in the Big Apple, she’ll be interviewed on The Today Show. The 25-year-old is “very excited” to be hosting SNL, and also to give a no-holds-barred interview with a journalist she respects as part of her image rehabilitation. The source says that Lindsay’s Today Show interview will air Thursday. “Lindsay agreed to go on Today for a no holds barred interview … She has tremendous respect for Matt Lauer, who will be doing the interview,” a source said. “Lindsay is nervous about hosting SNL , but that is to be expected. She is grateful for the opportunity and won’t let (executive producer) Lorne Michaels down.” “Lindsay has been a longtime fan of Saturday Night Live and is incredibly excited to work with the amazing cast and writers,” her rep, Steve Honig, adds. Last week, Lohan got a glowing report and praise from the judge handling her theft case. Judge Stephanie Sautner said she’s got “her life back on track.” If all goes according to plan, she could be off probation in April.

Ryan Seacrest Surprised By Sacha Baron Cohen’s Oscar Stunt

‘I definitely did not know that he was going to do that,’ Seacrest said on his radio show on Monday. By Gil Kaufman Ryan Seacrest and Sacha Baron Cohen at the Oscars on Sunday Photo: E! Entertainment Who better to try to flap than the unflappable Ryan Seacrest? If he could put up with Simon Cowell’s constant attacks for nearly a decade, surely the ‘Crest could handle a sneak attack from the Dictator. And, true to his laser-focus reputation, when Sacha Baron Cohen ‘s Dictator ash-bombed Seacrest on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night, the “American Idol” host kept his composure. After all, he had to know that SBC was not just going to show up in costume, but was very likely going to create one of his infamous scenes to drive up some hype for his upcoming tyrant spoof . “I was surprised, but not surprised. I definitely did not know that he was going to do that,” Seacrest said on Monday morning (February 27) on his radio show, “On Air With Ryan Seacrest,” about his surprise when Cohen “accidentally” spilled an urn filled with the purported ashes of late North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il on the TV presenter’s tux. “He comes over and I asked him a couple of questions but … you know that feeling in your gut.” Knowing that Cohen was not going to let him off that easy, Seacrest said in the back of his mind he kept thinking, “This guy isn’t coming as the Dictator to not do something … you know in your gut, you feel like, ‘This is going too normally.’ ” And then when he saw the urn come out, Seacrest could see something coming. “It was getting closer to my chest and then it tipped over. And it wasn’t the wind. He spilt it on my tuxedo.” Did we mention Seacrest is hard to rattle? The consummate professional didn’t flinch because he smartly followed the advice his mother, Connie, gave him long ago when he was just a wee wannabe presenter: ” ‘You always want to have two jackets. You never know what’s going to happen. You never know what you’re going to spill on yourself and you want to be red carpet-ready at all times. That’s your job.’ So I had another jacket.” Seacrest had a great attitude about the gag, which drew a thumbs-up from some of the other celebs MTV News talked to at Elton John’s annual Oscar-viewing party and charity gala. Oscars 2012 Ratings Up From Last Year

Ratings for Sunday night’s telecast up 4 percent over 2011’s show. By Gil Kaufman Meryl Streep and Jean Dujardin backstage at the Academy Awards on Sunday Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Sometimes “meh” is all you need — especially when you’re following up one of the most reviled Oscar hosting teams in recent memory. That might explain why, despite a night devoid of any major surprises or blockbuster winners, ratings for the 2012 Oscars telecast were up slightly over last year. According to ABC’s preliminary ratings, the Billy Crystal-hosted awards show had a 25.5 rating and 37 share, a 4 percent increase over the 2011 show, which famously bombed thanks to the lack of chemistry between hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway . Crystal’s safe-as-milk ninth go-round as host earned the veteran comedian mostly tepid to negative reviews, but it was enough to boost the big night to one of its best ratings nights since 2007, when the show put up a 27.7 rating and 42 share. The highest-ever Oscar ratings came in 1998, when the global blockbuster “Titanic” helped draw in more than 55 million viewers. Ratings might have been even higher if any of the most-nominated movies had posted solid box-office figures as well. But between them, the leading winners, “The Artist” and “Hugo,” which both reveled in a nostalgic look back at the dawn of the modern movie era, have grossed just over $100 million combined to date. To put that in perspective, popcorn flick “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” which was blanked in three technical categories, brought in nearly that much in its opening weekend. More complete ratings numbers are expected later in the day on Monday (February 27). The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Because it’s never too early to start the wild speculation. By Kevin P. Sullivan Martin Freeman in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Photo: James Fisher/ New Line Productions Well, everyone, that’s it for our 2012 Oscars coverage. It’s been a great awards season. Can’t wait to see you next year. … … … Hello, everyone, and welcome to MTV News’ 2013 Oscars coverage. It seems like just yesterday that “The Artist” won big and took home Best Picture, but who cares about that movie anymore? That’s old news. This year is sure to be a huge year at the movies, and the nominees for next year’s Oscars are already lining up. MTV News has your first look at the likely nominees for the Academy Awards based on everything we know about the Oscars. Best Supporting Actor A rare, wide-open race this late in the game, Best Supporting Actor nominations could go to any number of great actors who were not great enough to be considered for the lead. The one lock at this point has to be Christoph Waltz for his work in Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained.” Waltz won an Academy Award for playing essentially the same character in “Inglourious Basterds,” but this time he’s a good guy. What could be bad about that? Best Actress Here’s a category already locked in a dead heat, with a wide variety of potential nominees vying for one of the five spots. The real shock here could be young Quvenzhan
