By Adam Graham Katy Perry performs on “American Idol” Thursday Photo: FOX Katy Perry transported “E.T.” to the “American Idol” stage Thursday (April 21) and even brought a special guest along with her: Kanye West. The two reprised their recent #1 hit on the “Idol” stage in a pre-taped appearance during the “Idol” results show. The performance kicked off with Kanye’s opening verse piped in via music video, so it was a surprise when the Coachella headliner appeared onstage with Perry later in the song. Perry was carried on to the stage, arms outstretched, by three dancers dressed in alien getups, who hoisted Russell Brand’s better half high above their heads. Perry was decked out in a white, form-fitting bodysuit tricked out with pink LED lights and a long white cape. She wore some sort of futuristic space crown atop her head, making her look like the queen of a far-off pop planet. Green lasers crisscrossed the darkened “Idol” stage as Perry was placed into a throne-like cage, which was carted across the stage by her team of a half-dozen alien dancers. West took the stage in a leather coat accented with a fur overlay and exercised self-censorship on his verse’s “alien sex” line. West and Perry faced off at center stage, moving toward and away from each other to play up the tension between them. In the song’s closing moments, Perry softly caressed West’s cheek before retreating back to her throne, where the lights dimmed and her suit lit up with blinking, zigzagging lights. Perry and West both have a history with “American Idol.” Perry chipped in as a guest judge during the early rounds in season nine, at one point threatening to throw a Coke in Kara DioGuardi’s face, and performed “Waking Up in Vegas” — in an Elvis jumpsuit, no less — on the show during season eight. Earlier that same season, West took to the “Idol” stage to perform “Heartless,” from his 808s and Heartbreak LP, which would later be transformed into a winning performance by that season’s champ, Kris Allen . Haley Reinhart and Jacob Lusk also land in the bottom three. By Gil Kaufman Stefano Langone on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Wednesday night’s “Music of the 21st Century” wasn’t kind to most of the “American Idol” contestants, but even with a few missteps, host Ryan Seacrest revealed on Thursday’s (April 21) results show that more than 52 million votes were cast for the top seven. After an unrelenting march of early female departures, the remaining two ladies were safe for a second week, though Haley Reinhart did land in the bottom three again, if only for a moment before behind ushered back to safety. That left often-on-the-brink wild card Stefano Langone and Jacob Lusk sweating out their fate by hour’s end. The fourth time, alas, was not a charm for Langone, as his luck finally ran out and Lusk lived to sing another day. Looking like his usual cocky self, Langone smiled and seemed happily resigned to his fate as he watched his highlights package. “It started my career and … you can’t put a price on that,” he said in response to Seacrest’s question about how the show had changed Stefano’s life. He then happily sang Stevie Wonder’s “Lately” one more time, giving the audience another taste of his cruise-ship talents as rocker James Durbin openly wept at the sight of his pal grabbing the mic for the last time. In fact, Durbin couldn’t control his emotions and ran out to bear-hug and spin Langone around as he finished the song before the car-crash survivor was enveloped in a group hug. Earlier in the night, the first two to get the results were Lusk and Casey Abrams, with Seacrest still talking about the spontaneous kiss Casey sprang on judge Jennifer Lopez the night before. Even after the return of his scary-face singing on Maroon 5’s “Harder to Breathe,” Abrams was safe, while Lusk was back in the bottom three after failing to convince viewers with his cover of hero Luther Vandross’ “Dance With my Father.” When Seacrest asked Lauren Alaina, Durbin and Langone to take the long walk, it was no surprise that Langone was back in the bottom three after his tepid take on Ne-Yo’s “Closer,” which meant Alaina and Durbin were safe. And it seemed pretty obvious when Scotty McCreery and Reinhart were the last two to get the news that front-runner McCreery would likely be safe, and he was, meaning once again Reinhart was facing elimination after her good notices for Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” She wasn’t down long, though, as Seacrest ushered her to safety just moments later. Earlier in the night, Lauren, Haley, Stefano and Jacob sang a version of Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” to open the show that managed to make the fluffy pop confection even frothier. That was followed by Casey, Scotty and James singing a “Glee”-ky version of Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida,” during which a self-assured Durbin stole the show coming off like the seasoned showman next to a pair of flat amateurs with shaky stage presence. The show also found season-seven winner David Cook coming home to sing his new single, the midtempo rocker “The Last Goodbye,” and Katy Perry taking the stage in a glowing white space suit to sing her hit alien love song “E.T.” with a surprise cameo from fur-decked collaborator Kanye West. Next week, the top six take on the catalog of 1970s pop icon Carole King on Wednesday night and Bruno Mars drops in to perform on Thursday’s elimination show. Bearded rocker plants one on judge Jennifer Lopez on Wednesday’s 21st-century songs episode. By Adam Graham Casey Abrams performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX This season, “American Idol” has sort of become a game of “what will Casey Abrams do next?” And after taking on Nirvana , nearly fainting on live television and dialing himself way back with a hushed take on Nat King Cole’s ‘Nature Boy,” Abrams topped even himself on Wednesday’s (April 20) “Idol” by planting a kiss on Jennifer Lopez’s cheek while finishing off his performance. The smooch came at the close of the bearded rocker’s aggressive rendition of Maroon 5’s “Harder to Breathe,” from the group’s 2002 debut album, Songs About Jane. (Wednesday’s theme was “songs from the 21st century.” ) Abrams, using his intense glare to embody the bitter scorn in frontman Adam Levine’s lyrics, stalked either side of the stage in a stiff, upright manner before approaching the judges’ table at the song’s end. He locked himself on Lopez like a guided missle and leaned in toward her, his head mere inches from that of People magazine’s Most Beautiful Woman . They shared an intimate stare before she broke the glance and turned her head to her right, toward Steven Tyler. Abrams sang the song’s final line directly to her — “is there anyone out there?/ ‘Cause it’s getting harder and harder to breathe — and caught her off-guard by pecking her on the cheek before walking away. Randy Jackson threw up his arms in dismay, Tyler exclaimed, “You did what I’ve been trying to do for two months!” and Lopez giggled like a giddy school girl. The fireworks weren’t over yet. After Lopez and Jackson praised Abrams for his soft lips and his risk-taking, respectively, Tyler dropped what appeared to be an F-bomb, calling Abrams “f—ing good” in his appraisal of the singer. (Censors caught it, though a little lip-reading goes a long way.) The audience erupted, Abrams covered his mouth in surprise and Lopez’s jaw hung agape, while Tyler continued as if nothing had happened. Jackson stood up from his chair as if to signal he was calling for a time-out, and made Tyler aware of his gaffe. “He’s so darn good,” Tyler corrected himself. Host Ryan Seacrest, sporting a faux-Abrams beard on his face, remarked, “The wheels have fallen off this program,” and thanked him for “changing the course of this show.” Backstage after the performance, cameras caught up with Abrams and he recapped what had just happened onstage. “I kissed Jennifer Lopez and I made Steven Tyler swear,” he said. “That”s always a plus.” So now, once again, the question remains: What will Casey Abrams do next? Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina play it safe with country tunes on ‘Idol’ night that called for contemporary tunes. By Gil Kaufman James Durbin on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX The theme on Wednesday’s (April 20) “American Idol” top-seven performance night was music from the 21st century , and while James Durbin blew it out with a Muse extravaganza, Jacob Lusk took it down for a touching Luther Vandross tribute and teens Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina played it close to the vest with traditional country tunes. First up was McCreery, who sang “Swingin’ ” by LeAnn Rimes, giving it his usual dose of country comfort. Backed by a four-piece horn section, McCreery brought the whole arsenal: the bizarre sideways-mic technique, the George W. Bush-esque facial tics and the “down-home” charm. For the first time this season, though, McCreery’s shtick seemed a bit phoned-in and fell a bit flat, lacking his usual appeal. While the crowd ate it up, Steven Tyler suggested Scotty move his body a bit more when he performs and Jennifer Lopez said it was that time in the competition for Scotty to move beyond his comfort zone and show America his full range. “It’s time to pull out the big guns,” she said, noting that McC had a whole decade of music to choose from and picked a tame song. “We were expecting more from Scotty on that one. Randy Jackson served up the ultimate “Idol” judge’s dis, calling the song choice “safe.” Looking like a rock and roll shock trooper in an all-black ensemble, James Durbin went truly contemporary by picking Muse’s bombastic “Uprising.” Mentor Jimmy Iovine loved the song choice and Durbin delivered, coming out alongside a marching band drum section and wearing a post-apocalyptic shredded black overcoat. Though tentative at first, Durbin leaned into the chorus and showed nice vocal control, swinging his truncated mic stand in the classic fashion of late Queen singer Freddie Mercury and not being shy with his glass-shattering upper register. J.Lo was blown away. “I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that that theatrically, this is going to be the best performance of the night,” she said, marveling at how high his voice reached. Randy hopes JD follows that direction on his album and mixes the pomp with metal, predicting (correctly, as it turned out) that it could be the best performance of the night. You can’t really go wrong by picking a song from the best-selling album of 2011 to date, so Haley Reinhart’s take on Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” was probably her best choice so far. Iovine counseled her to tap into the tune’s heartache, and wearing a throwback red and white polka-dot dress, Reinhart busted out her signature growl and put bluesy emotion into the tune, but at times still came off a bit too chipper. Randy said he’s not only looking for a winner, but also trying to figure out what direction the singers might go in after the show and he praised Haley’s choice, even if the falsetto was a bit wobbly at times. Tyler loved it, even with the slow start and Lopez said it took guts to take on such a well-known song. “There were moments when you did … you brought a little bit of Haley to it in certain moments,” she said. After all the comparisons, Jacob Lusk wisely went with the Luther Vandross classic “Dance with my Father,” (on the late R&B great’s birthday, no less), reaching deep for memories of his own long-departed father. Looking like he was straining to keep it together, Lusk sat serenely on stool center-stage and sang the uplifting tune in his breathy falsetto, bringing power and grit without his usual over-emoting. “Luther Lusk!” Tyler enthused. “You remind me all the time the reason I love music.” After a few weeks of bland platitudes, Lopez served up another of her useful real-life artist comments, telling Jacob that part of being an artist is tapping into the emotion of a track without losing control. Randy agreed and said the vocals were good, but it didn’t excite him and encouraged Lusk to “go for it” next week. Casey Abrams chose Maroon 5’s “Harder to Breathe,” strapping on an electric guitar and tapping into his blue-eyed soul man for the bouncy white-funk tune. Moving spastically across the stage slapping hands with the audience, Abrams gave a performance that was manic at points, as he flashed his unfortunate scary face a few too many times, ending the song by getting uncomfortably close to Lopez’s face and then planting a kiss on her cheek. “I loved it,” Lopez blushed, clarifying that she was talking about the performance, not the soft-lips kiss and praising Abrams for taking a pop tune into the rock zone. With memories of the disastrous Nirvana performance from earlier in the season, Jackson was worried the Maroon 5 song wouldn’t pan out, but said the risk-taking worked and said Casey should continue pushing the envelope. “There’s millions of people in America that are really angry because you piss them off because you’re so f—ing good,” Tyler said, eliciting wide-eyed looks from his fellow judges and some nimble-fingered dead air from the network censors. He’s well-acquainted with the bottom three, so Iovine said Stefano Langone needed “Closer” by Ne-Yo to have the right sex appeal and strut, without coming off like begging. Wearing a romper-stomper pseudo-punk outfit complete with drooping red suspenders, Langone served up another cheesy, vocally weak performance that felt more like an over-eager high school musical solo than the work of the next “American Idol.” Expecting it to be jerky, bad karaoke, Jackson said Stefano pulled it off and smartly took his time on the early verses, even working in a few nice dance steps. Speaking for the ladies, Lopez said Langone had his swag on and worked the audience. Thursday night’s pimp spot belonged to teen Lauren Alaina, who sang Sara Evans’ “Born to Fly” with some help from Miley Cyrus’ producers, Rock Mafia. Iovine picked them to once again motivate Alaina to bring her best and not shrink away from the pressure. Working the stage like a pro, Alaina shimmied and strutted her way through the fiddle-tastic song that most of America was probably not familiar with. It was a bit of a generic arrangement and though Alaina came off confident and brassy, the song lacked the kind of dynamics needed to show off her vocal talent. Tyler suggested some Faith Hill or Shania Twain next time, while Lopez praised the color in the 16-year-old’s voice and encouraged her to go for the big notes she hears the other singers trying. “You can do that, do that next time,” Lopez said. “Try it. Try it at home by yourself. Scream, yell, in the shower, in the closet … just let it out and see how far and how long you can hold it … because you can do that!” In a huge switch from past years, when eliminated contestants who left “Idol” were rarely heard from again, the show opened with all of this year’s booted singers doing a group sing on Pink’s “So What,” with Pia Toscano, Naima Adedapo, Karen Rodriguez, Thia Megia and Ashthon Jones. A source confirmed the booking to MTV News, though no official confirmation has come though from “SNL” reps. Gaga last appeared on the show in October 2009 in what went down as one very memorable episode. Gaga and Madonna poked fun at pop-star rivalries during the sketch “Deep House Dish,” where they had a catfight and nearly kissed. That night, Gaga performed two songs: a high-concept take on “Paparazzi” and a piano-driven performance of her dance track “LoveGame.” She later appeared in a sketch alongside Andy Samberg, when both of them wore her famous bubble dress. Being that this latest appearance comes just as Gaga is dropping her May 23 album release Born This Way, there’s a good chance she’ll perform lead singles “Born This Way” and “Judas.” Or, as she’s known to do, she might just dazzle fans with a brand-new track. This is the latest promotional appearance announced for the album, including a May 27 appearance on “Good Morning America” that will kick off the show’s summer concert series and the May 7 premiere of Gaga’s highly anticipated HBO special , which was taped at New York’s Madison Square Garden in February. Despite the cameo, it was Hines Ward who won over the judges with his rumba. By Kelley L. Carter John Travolta, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Kirstie Alley on “Dancing With the Stars” Photo: ABC Even the help of swift-footed John Travolta couldn’t get Kirstie Alley more points from the judges on Monday night’s “Dancing With the Stars.” Alley’s “Look Who’s Talking” co-star appeared in a pre-taped segment as her “Dance Doctor.” The actress and her partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, have been grabbing headlines the last few weeks with their dancing mishaps, and Travolta, who has swiveled his hips in films like “Pulp Fiction,” “Grease” and “Saturday Night Fever,” gave his friend a few pointers, joking in the segment that Alley should wear gym shoes instead of high heels. Still, the comedic bit wasn’t enough to bolster a higher score. The two earned 23 points out of 30 (only one point better than the week before), putting them ahead of three couples, who each earned 22 points. Here’s how the others fared: Hines Ward and Kym Johnson: The football star soared to the top of the leaderboard with his rumba to “God Bless the U.S.A.” “You make it look so easy,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba said. “You have the best hip action I have seen in a long time.” Score: 27/30. Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas: Last week’s critical darlings maintained a high position with a samba done to Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.” Score: 26/30. Chris Jericho and Cheryl Burke: The judges loved the wrestler’s interpretation of the Viennese waltz to “America the Beautiful.” “I feel like we’ve underestimated you,” Inaba told him. Head judge Len Goodman gave him 8 points. Score: 26/30. Romeo and Chelsie Hightower: The two performed a foxtrot to “New York, New York,” and impressed the judges with the improvement in Romeo’s posture and arm movements. Score: 26/30. Kendra Wilkinson and Louis Van Amstel : The former playmate and reality star danced a foxtrot to “Yankee Doodle,” and the judges said she’s improving. “It’s much better than last week,” Goodman told her. “It was fun and it was entertaining.” Still, it wasn’t enough to keep them out of the bottom three. Score: 22/30. Petra Nemcova and Dmitry Chaplin: The supermodel and her partner quick-stepped to Elvis’ “Viva Las Vegas,” but judges were none too impressed. They liked that she handled the fast pace of the performance but said that this was far from her best dance. Score: 22/30. Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff: Once the early darlings of this season, they’ve dropped to a three-way tie for the lowest score this week. Their samba to “Sweet Home Alabama” did little to convince the judges that they should be contenders for the title this season. Fader ‘s editor in chief calls the eclectic collective’s rise ‘a special moment.’ By Steven Roberts Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator Photo: Getty Images Over the past few months, Odd Future have exploded onto the music scene, leading the charge for the New West . The L.A.-based collective has found itself performing at the mtvU Woodies ; in the pages of nearly every skate, music and pop-culture publication; taking over “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” ; and even parodying itself in a Funny or Die spoof. While the last few months may have seemed like a whirlwind, the group isn’t an overnight-success story. Tyler, the Creator, Domo Genesis, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain and the rest of the gang have been making noise for quite some time. They’ve released more than 10 albums over the last two years and made significant waves underground and on the Internet, building a substantial, loyal following thanks to their attention to lyrical detail and “I don’t give a f—” attitude. “It seems like there’s been kind of a divide in hip-hop, where the people that are quote-unquote lyricists are very serious about their craft and don’t seem like they’re having very much fun at all,” said Andrew “Noz” Nosnitsky. “And the party-oriented stuff is more the guys like Waka Flocka and dudes who are like, ‘Nah, I don’t care about lyrics at all.’ ” Noz, who wrote OF’s Billboard cover story , said the group appeals to people on both sides of the fence. Tyler has been vocal about his love of Waka Flocka Flame and his disdain for overly critical hip-hop heads, but his crew’s lyrical prowess can’t be ignored. Fader Editor in Chief Matthew Schnipper agreed that OF’s mixture of bedlam and lyricism made for something special. “There’s always people making good things, and there’s always people running around trying to be ridiculous,” Schnipper told MTV News. “When the two things come together, it’s a special moment.” Schnipper also said Odd Future owed a lot of their success to new fans joining their circus. OF had released a bevy of free albums before they caught the mainstream’s attention, leaving newcomers with a lot to catch up on. “By the time everyone jumped on them, they had already had a full body of work that had already been on the Internet and around, so I think to some degree, that’s exciting, because here is somebody you didn’t know about, and then you can go to page 102 on a Tumblr and 4 million mixtapes.
