O Music Awards To Celebrate Online Creativity — Voting Starts Today!

Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and their die-hard fans are up for awards at April 28 event. By MTV News staff Photo: MTV The typical awards show is packed with performances, celebrity appearances, red-carpet arrivals and, at some point, the presentations of the night’s biggest prize, usually just before the credits roll. The O Music Awards ? Not so much. The first-ever edition of MTV Networks’ latest awards extravaganza will take everything you know about awards galas, throw it in a blender, mash it up with an obscure black-and-white cartoon from the 1940s, add a Kanye West beat under it and maybe some adorable LOLcats and a snippet of “Friday” on top, post it on Twitter and watch it go mega-viral. Instead of just honoring the singers, songwriters, directors and producers who make our favorite digital-music products, the O Music Awards will dig deeper in such categories as Innovative Music Video, Fan Army FTW, Funniest Music Short, Innovative Artist, Must Follow Artist on Twitter, NSFW Music Video, Most Viral Dance, Best Independent Music Blog, Best Animal Performance, Best Performance Series and more to dig up the people behind your favorite online music and videos, professional, amateur or just plain awesome. Voting begins today (April 5) on the O Music Awards website , and like the best viral memes, it will be simple, social and transparent, with fans encouraged to vote via social media through a mobile voting wap site. You can follow the top vote-getters in the categories on a real-time leader board in the run-up to the April 28 event. Performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks. And unlike those other awards shows, the night’s biggest trophy might be handed out before the broadcast, during it or even after, to keep the conversation going. “There will be an event, but it won’t be a traditional awards show with a host, audience and a bunch of celebrities,” promised Shannon Connolly, vice president of music strategy for the MTV Music Group. “It will embody what the O Awards celebrates, which is being very interactive. We’ll have live performances, mash-ups, collaborations and it will be a Web event that will take place not just on MTV Music Group sites.” Lady Gaga and Odd Future’s Tyler the Creator lead with three nominations each, followed by Kanye West, the Flaming Lips and Nicki Minaj with two nominations apiece. Additional nominated artists include Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Justin Bieber, Lil B, Wiz Khalifa, Robyn, OK Go, Katy Perry and iamwhoiam. Notable nominees include Antoine Dodson/ Gregory Brothers (Funniest Music Short), the Lonely Island (Funniest Music Short), Funny or Die (Funniest Music Short), 50 Cent, Rebecca Black and Bert (Favorite Animated GIF), the Hype Machine (Best Music Discovery Service), Pandora (Best Music Discovery Service), Tiny Desk Concerts (Best Performance Series), Gorilla vs. Bear (Best Independent Music Blog) and Marshall Jones (Best Music Hack). Fans will definitely be front and center, with an entire category devoted to the Best Fan Cover, the most rabid online fan following (which will pit 30 Seconds to Mars’ Echelon against the Beliebers, Katy Perry’s Bandaids, Gaga’s Little Monsters and the followers of My Chemical Romance, Nicki Minaj, Tokio Hotel, Wiz Khalifa, Rain and Rihanna). There are also nods to the Best Fan Forum, Best Music Hack and Best Animal Performance. The Innovative Artist race is a tight one as well, including such nominees as the Flaming Lips, iamwhoiam, Kanye, Gaga, Lil B, Radiohead and Tyler the Creator. You’ll have to choose between the Dougie, the Pony, Lil B’s Cooking Dance and the “Whip My Hair” boogie in the Most Viral Dance category. In keeping with recent digital-music innovations from MTV Networks like MTV Hive and the Music Meter , Connolly said it was apparent that the time was right to create an awards show that moved at the speed of the Net. “Music consumption has never been greater, and it’s hugely important to our audience,” she said. “We felt like the time was right to look at the convergence of technology and music fans and the YouTube celebrities who’ve created this new ecosystem where music is exploding.” Voting starts today for the O Music Awards . Make your voice heard!

Swedish House Mafia’s Axwell Drops ‘Heart Is King’

‘It’s a track I designed just for my shows,’ DJ/producer tells MTV News of the Miami Music Week banger. By Adam Stewart Swedish House Mafia’s Axwell Photo: MTV News After a tremendous showing during this year’s Miami Music Week, both as a solo artist and with his Scandinavian brethren in Swedish House Mafia, Axwell released his long-awaited solo track “Heart Is King” on Monday (April 4). Axwell’s fans — and MTV News — have had their eyes and ears peeled for this latest release since he first teased a crowd with it at the Montreux Sundance – Electronic Music Festival in Switzerland last May. The new track is classic big-room Axwell, garnished with spine-tingling strings and a driving, progressive riff. “It’s kind of a neo-classical type of thing,” Axwell told MTV News when we caught up with him in Miami. “It’s a little like filtered house, and it has this break, [and] a pretty classical type of melody. There’s no vocal or anything. It’s just like a track I wanted to get out there, something I wanted to get off of my chest for a while. It’s a track I designed just for my shows, and [especially] when it’s a big show.” “Heart Is King” got a series of live plays at MMW’s biggest shows, including Axwell’s solo night at LIV, Swedish House Mafia’s Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand and Steve Angello’s Size Matters showcase, which closed out Beatport Beach. And it was without question one of the week’s biggest tracks, eliciting roars from the crowd each time it dropped. Of course, Axwell has a reputation for bringing it big, and his latest cut is right up there in epic-ness with the other songs from his extensive catalog like “Feel the Vibe” and “Nothing but Love.” “Heart” is likely to be just the first of a slew of major Miami tracks to come out of the SHM camp, joining Tim Mason’s “The Moment” (set for an April 6 release on Angello’s Size imprint) and the trio’s new single “Save the World,” whose release date has yet to be announced. All of the new tracks coming from the Swedes and their signees incorporate innovative sounds that vibe with the ever-morphing house-music flavor. As demonstrated on “Heart Is King,” Axwell keeps the music fresh but also skillfully harnesses other genres. “There will always be certain subgenres coming up and down,” he said. “But at the end of the day, it’s all about the love and the house music and just bringing it! People always come back to mama. They go around, venture around — dubstep, tribal, drum and bass. At the end of the night, when they wanna come home? They come back to house!” Fans can download the track at Beatport.com . Did you get to hear Axwell’s “Heart Is King” live in Miami? Let us know what you think in the comments below! Steven Tyler, Rihanna, Robert Pattinson Pop Up At ACM Awards

The Band Perry, Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert and Lady Antebellum big winners. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler and Carrie Underwood at the ACM Awards on Sunday Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images You could be excused if you tuned into the 46th Academy of Country Music Awards show on Sunday night and thought that maybe you’d overslept and missed the Grammys. In addition to the usual compliment of cowboy hats and bedazzled boots, there was a healthy dose of rock and pop glitter at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In addition to “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler lending his formidable pipes to a duet with Carrie Underwood on her hit “Undo It,” the pair chewed up the stage for Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way,” with Underwood looking comfortable screeching the song’s chorus into a microphone with a glittery whip on the end. There were also some awards handed out, including four to Miranda Lambert, who won Best Female Vocalist, as well as Single, Song and Video of the Year honors for her tune “The House That Built Me.” But her roll ended at the fan-voted Entertainer of the Year trophy, which went to Taylor Swift, 21, the youngest-ever winner of that honor. “This is the first time I’ve ever won this, and I’m just losing my mind,” a teary Swift said in her signature breathless manner. “The fact that this is from the fans makes it so beautiful. … You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Ever … We just got back from touring in Europe and Asia, so thank you for this wonderful welcome-home gift.” Earlier in the night, Swift premiered her new single, a get back tune at critics who’ve slagged her live singing in the past, which she performed while plucking a banjo. It was a big night for Grammy winners Lady Antebellum as well, with the country trio winning Top Vocal Group and Album of the Year for Need You Now, while bluegrass newcomers the Band Perry snagged Best New Artist. It was five in a row for Brad Paisley, who once again went home with the Best Male Vocalist hardware and the Gwyneth Paltrow-starring “Country Strong” took the Tex Ritter Award for films that emphasize country music. The performance-heavy three-hour show also featured the sight of Rihanna being joined by Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles for a dramatic duet on Ri’s new single, “California King Bed,” and folk pop icon James Taylor joined Zac Brown for a medley of “Colder Weather” and “Sweet Baby James.” Among the presenters were “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, as well as Robert Pattinson , who appeared on the show with his “Water for Elephants” co-star Reese Witherspoon. Charlie Sheen Retools Torpedo Of Truth Tour After Bad Reviews

Actor switches to interview format after bombing in Detroit. By Gil Kaufman Charlie Sheen Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images You may have thought that troubled former “Two and a Half Men” star Charlie Sheen doesn’t listen to any voices except the warrior shouts in his own head. But the actor appeared to have listened to his audience when he took the stage Sunday night for the second stop on his My Violent Torpedo of Truth/ Defeat Is Not an Option Tour. After bombing hard during his opening show in Detroit the night before and getting booed off the stage when his wandering production went off the rails, Sheen changed up the format Sunday in Chicago and gave the audience more of what they were looking for: dish on his chaotic personal life. According to ABC News , Sheen ditched his comedic opening act and the rambling multimedia presentation and switched to an interview-style format, with an MC asking him questions about his life and career for 90 minutes. He talked about the pleasure he gets from his “goddesses” and called former “Two and a Half” co-star Jon Cryer a “rock star.” He tried to calm down the crowd when they heckled the less appreciative audience in Detroit and shouted “Detroit sucks!” while waiting for Sheen to take the stage. He regaled the crowd of 3,600 at the Chicago Theatre with the tale of the first time he tried drugs; he talked about his marriages and his legal problems and explained why he prefers to pay for sex. “I have millions to blow, and I ran out of stuff to buy,” he said. Smoking throughout the show, Charlie lamented his dad Martin Sheen’s advice to pass up “The Karate Kid” in favor of the chance to appear in “Predator 2,” never mind, as CNN pointed out, that “Predator 2” came out six years after “Kid” and Charlie did not appear in it. Sheen reportedly stayed up all night on the bus ride from Detroit to Chicago retooling the show. He ended the night with a poem, which read, “I stand before you oh captain oh captain to most humbly praise you for this radical ripple this single cast stone in the stagnant puddle that is the known universe. Your weapon of choice is wordplay via Dr. Seuss play.” It remains to be seen how the rest of the 20-city tour will do, with reports that a number of shows are suffering from poor ticket sales in light of the bad reviews of the Detroit appearance. SMH: Battered Wife Acquitted Of Murking Coked-Up Hubby Says His Friends Yell “Murderer” At Her

Poor thang! This mother of two was forced to fend off her yayo snortin’ hubby with a knife and beat the charges after he ended up dead. Donna Cobb’s four-year roller coaster began when she was awoken by her coke-and booze-addled husband and ended with a jury deeming her an innocent battered woman nearly six months ago. Now Cobb has returned to work as a nurse’s aide at Harlem Hospital and continues to live in the same nearby apartment where she stabbed Kevin Cobb to death in November 2006. “I’m taking it one day at a time,” she told the Daily News in a recent interview. “I still think about it a lot, you know. I don’t think I’ll ever fully get over what happened.” Instead of criticizing and scorning her, she says, the neighbors and co-workers who watched her saga unfold have mostly rallied around her – but not everyone. “I have had some negativity from Kevin’s friends, saying ‘Murderer!’ whenever they saw me,” the 42-year-old mother of six said. “They pretty much didn’t know what was going on, and I didn’t feel the need to explain anything to them.” In her 10 years with Kevin Cobb, with whom she had 12-year-old twin girls, he continually abused and threatened her, spitting on her and stealing her money, she said. On the night of the killing, the couple threw a party in their apartment. Kevin, who was unemployed, spent the evening guzzling a bottle of tequila and snorting cocaine . When a fight broke out, the couple kicked everyone out, but Kevin began muttering threats and accusing his wife of cheating, she said. She went into her daughter’s room to sleep but said she was awoken by Kevin punching her in the face, pulling her out of bed by her hair and kicking her. “I tried to fight him off,” she said. “I … ran into the living room. He came right behind me, punched me in my back. I fell. He started stomping me.” Cobb grabbed an elephant statue off the floor – one of many elephant-themed objects that decorate her home – and struck him over the head with it, temporarily stunning him. She ran into the bedroom, but Kevin gave chase, grabbed her and began choking her. “I was feeling for anything,” Cobb said. “I felt the knife, and I just poked him with it.” “I didn’t want him to die,” she added. “My kids have to be without a father, and it’s painful.” Her lawyer, Earl Ward, said he was pleased his client was acquitted but questioned why Cobb – a churchgoing woman and the family’s sole breadwinner – was prosecuted in the first place. “This is a woman who had no record, who goes to church every Sunday, and Fridays, too,” he said. “The idea that she was looking at a life sentence was extremely, extremely troubling. She was a classic battered woman.” Cobb said she and Kevin met in Harlem and had a true connection when they began dating in 1996. “In the beginning, Kevin was really sweet,” she said. “Kevin was very attentive to the children. He was a helpful, really charming, bubbly kind of person.” Things began to change in 1997 after Kevin moved in and started slapping her. Also around that time, Cobb realized Kevin had a drug problem after finding cocaine in his pockets. “He promised me that [he’d get help] a lot,” Cobb said. “I found a program for him to go to. … He wouldn’t show up.” Cobb said she is now focused on her grandchild and moving her family out of the apartment where the murder occurred. She said she still is coming to terms with Kevin’s death. “Throughout all the years of the abuse I experienced … I don’t think that’s something I’ll ever fully recover from,” she said. Man, F*ck A Thug for reals! This lady has six kids and a grandbaby — screw that monster. May he rot in hell. Source
