Topher Grace Recalls His Lucky Sprain On ‘When I Was 17’

The star of ‘Take Me Home Tonight’ explains how he stumbled into acting as a teen. By Alex Chapman Topher Grace Photo: MTV News Before Topher Grace became a household name as the lovably discomfited Eric on “That ’70s Show,” he was just another teenager looking for something to do. On the upcoming episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” the star of “Take Me Home Tonight” (which hits theaters next week) recalls his big break, which surprisingly stemmed from a turn in his high-school play. “When I was 17, I made the varsity tennis team, and I wound up spraining my ankle twice, so I couldn’t do that that spring,” Grace mentions in the upcoming episode. The former athlete tried out for the lead role in his high school’s production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” a part he didn’t expect to land. “I really didn’t think I’d get it. There were some kids who were really great actors, and I still maintain that they were better actors then I am,” Grace humbly notes. Turns out, Topher’s theatrical turn would change his life as he knew it. “So the crazy thing about that play is this girl who was a friend of mine — her parents were big-time Hollywood producers. They wrote for ‘Saturday Night Live,’ they wrote ‘Wayne’s World’ and ‘Tommy Boy,’ and they came up to me after the play and said, ‘We’ll call you at some point,’ ” Grace recalls. But the actor misinterpreted the thrilling news, thinking he was being pursued to go on coffee runs instead of auditions. “I thought they needed a P.A. on one of their shows, so I said something really stupid.” Topher’s pal Gordon remembered the error, too: “He was like, ‘Yeah sure, baby. I’ll have my people call your people,’ ” Fast-forward nine months later, and the big-time producers had an opportunity for the actor that he almost couldn’t believe. “They called me and they said, ‘We’re making a sitcom about the ’70s.’ I still thought they wanted an assistant, but they said, ‘Oh no, we want you to audition.’ ” Turns out this little sitcom just happened to be the massive hit that launched Grace’s career. Don’t miss when Grace’s “Take Me Home Tonight” co-stars Anna Farris and Dan Fogler dish on their adolescent occupations in the newest episode of “When I Was 17,” premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV.

Oscar Nudity: Double Nominees Show Award Winning Skin [PICS]

For a Hollywood actress, the ultimate double shot is being nominated for two acting Oscars in the same year (unless you’re Lindsay Lohan , in which case the ultimate double shot is lifting two bottles of tequila at Discount Liquor Mart). Here’s a sampling of our favorite ladies who’ve received this rare honor: Ravishing redhead Julianne Moore is the most recent nominee on our list, nominated in 2002 for her roles in Far from Heaven and The Hours . But you have to go back all the way to 1993 for a glimpse of her famous firecrotch (and buns) in Short Cuts . Also in 1993, Holly Hunter received two nominations for her roles in The Firm and The Piano . We get firm thinking about tinkling Holly’s ivories, shown here in glorious rear view in The Piano . Icy British beauty Emma Thompson was nominated the same year for her roles in The Remains of the Day and In the Name of the Father . Mr. Skin will spend the remains of this day reminiscing about Emma’s rack in The Tall Guy (1989) . 5’10” glamazon Sigourney Weaver was nominated in 1988 for her roles in Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl . Sigourney didn’t show her beaver in those films, though she played a lady of the night in Working Girl , but she graciously compensated by flashing full frontal in A Map of the World (2000) . Mr. Skin’s favorite pair still comes in mammary form, but we’re willing to be flexible for you, ladies! Stay tuned for more Academy-Award winning nudity all this week on the Mr. Skin blog !

Britney Spears Makes Your Body Pop On Femme Fatale Teaser

Producer Dr. Luke gives fans a snippet of ‘How I Roll’ from Brit’s March 29 album. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale Photo: Jive Judging by the snippets we’ve heard from Femme Fatale, Britney Spears is ready to dance. Late Wednesday night, Spears’ producer Dr. Luke tweeted out another tease for the track “How I Roll.” “I just might be feeling like giving u another snippet ….. maybe,” Luke wrote. “Should it be a [producers] bloodshy and avant song??? something like that,” he added before sending a link to the song. The teaser opens with Britney cooing “ooh ahh” as beats and synths kick in. Those are jumbled with handclaps before Spears begins singing lines like, “Show your knee socks/ With tequila on the rocks/ Till you make your body pop/ To the speakers.” “In my opinion, this is her strongest album ever. It’s somewhat of a departure from what she’s done. It’s more mature,” manager Larry Rudolph told MTV News about Femme Fatale, which he even likened to a Madonna classic. “It’s more of a dance record. … This really is Britney’s Ray of Light album.” Spears herself has hinted that the album will have fans dancing. “I would describe it as moody, edgy pop with A LOT of energy. I co-wrote a couple of songs. I think it’s some of the best work I have ever done. There are a few mid-tempos that could be considered ballads,” Spears said during a Twitter Q&A this month. “I have a lot of history with #MaxMartin and @TheDoctorLuke so it’s always fun to collaborate with them,” she continued. “They make such incredible music. I’m so excited and I can’t wait for you guys to hear it. I think its some of the best work I have ever done!” What do you think of what you’ve heard so far from “How I Roll”? Tell us in the comments! ‘Hall Pass’ Stars Recall Best And Worst Pickup Lines

Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis and Jenna Fischer quip about some memorable dating experiences with MTV News. By Kara Warner Jason Sudeikis and Owen Wilson in “Hall Pass” Photo: New Line Cinema Those who have seen the trailer for Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis’ new comedy, “Hall Pass,” know that in the Farrelly brothers-directed film, the duo embark upon a series of zany misadventures after obtaining “hall passes” — basically a one-week vacation/break from their marriages — from their wives. During this marital hiatus, the boys do everything they can to pick up women, oftentimes using the most outlandish and ridiculous of pickup lines. When MTV News caught up with Wilson, Sudeikis and fellow co-star Jenna Fischer recently during the film’s press day, we asked them to share their go-to lines, as well as a few they’ve used with success. “Hi, I’m Jason Sudeikis,” Wilson quipped, which prompted a witty exchange between him and the “Saturday Night Live” star. “Aw, that’s very nice of you,” Sudeikis said. “Does that work for you?” “Yeah!” Wilson exclaimed, laughing. And then Sudeikis focused a bit, seeming to put some thought into the question, only to make room for more for Wilson laughter and more back-and-forth banter between the two. “My most successful one is, ‘How much do you cost?’ ” Sudeikis joked. “And you have to use that specifically.” “Hold that for Valentine’s Day,” Wilson advised, even though Sudeikis clearly wasn’t paying attention and went on with reciting bad pickup techniques. ” ‘Are those real?’ ” Sudeikis said. ” ‘Your eyes. I’m talking about your dreams.’ ” ” ‘Are they realistic?’ ” Wilson added. Fine, fine. If they won’t take the question seriously then we won’t. Next up, a few of the best and worst pickup lines the fellow castmembers have heard over the years. “Usually women will insult me,” Sudeikis explained. ” ‘I don’t see why you’re so great.’ And then, for some reason, I find that completely alluring.” “Ok, I’m going to win you over!” Wilson added. “Ok, sit right here. Settle in for the next hour or three — here we go,” he joked. Following with the theme of insults as pickup lines, Jenna Fischer recalled a particular unsettling experience. “I had this guy come up to me at a bar when I was much younger and he had said, ‘I bet I can guess your weight and if I do, can I get a kiss?’ And I thought to myself, ‘What?! No! What woman wants to talk about her weight? What if you’re wrong? What if you’re right? I don’t care, anyway,’ ” she said. “The idea that you just approached me with the most objectified vision of me, you whittled me down to a number, was so offensive.” Needless to say, Fischer was not particularly receptive to that line. “He did not get a kiss,” she added. Odd Future Ride The Bus, Become Unicorns

We ride along with hip-hop’s unlikely breakout stars, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Christopher “CJ” Smith Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator Photo: MTV News The morning after they terrified Jimmy Fallon, Brandon T. Jackson, Felicia Day and most of Middle America with their lurching, unhinged performance of “Sandwitches” on “Late Night,” 45 percent of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (or “OFWGKTA” if you’re nasty) were sprawled out on a Chinatown bus bound for Philadelphia. They weren’t particularly happy about it. Tyler, the Creator — who, in recent months, has become the rather unwilling focal point of the group (if “group” is even the right word) — sat facing forward, surveying the rapidly disappearing New York City skyline. His eyes were wide and the brim of his omnipresent Supreme ball cap jutted up at a 90-degree angle (the same cap made an appearance on “Late Night,” but only after Tyler had removed a green ski-mask with an inverted cross scrawled on it), a sartorial choice that made him look like a member of Fat Albert’s Junkyard Gang. He was thinking about the previous night’s performance, which, to this point, is the high-water mark in Odd Future’s rather odd anti-career. And when he finally spoke, in a gravelly voice that belied his 19 years, any and all resemblances to cartoon characters ceased. Because, whether he realized it or not, what he said was unquestionably real. “When people say you can do whatever you want, I really thought that sh– was corny, until this moment right now,” he said. “Like, that’s when I say, ‘I’m a f—ing unicorn,’ people are f—ing confused. I’m a f—ing unicorn, and you’re not going to tell me I’m f—ing not. I’m a f—ing table. I’m a f—ing table, and you can literally be whatever you f—ing want, as long as you believe that’s what you are.” Right now, Odd Future most assuredly believe they are unicorns. And tables. From unlikely beginnings — they formed as a ratty skateboarding crew in Los Angeles, then graduated to making homemade videos that combined gross-out stunts with lyrical odes to inebriation, masturbation and wanton violence (missing-in-action member Earl Sweatshirt’s “EARL” video does a nice job of summing up this early period) — have somehow become the hottest-tipped act in hip-hop. They’re now the subject of millions of “next big thing” features, even if they don’t want to be (Tyler reportedly turned down XXL magazine’s offer to appear on the cover of its 2011 “Freshman” Class issue , and just as many analytical pieces about the very nature of their success. From their loose status — there are something like 11 people in Odd Future, depending on whether or not you count Earl, who is either in boot camp or living with his mother — to their improbable rise from the blogs to the big stage, to Tyler’s short-shorts and knee-high socks, there truly is nothing else like them in hip-hop today. They are a knee-jerk reaction to the past decade of the genre that has been dominated by sneering, WWE-style heels, boastful “Scarface” impresarios, super-producers-turned-rappers and dudes who just plain-old use Auto-Tune. This is apparent in their live shows (which usually devolve into mosh-pit-and-middle-finger frenzies) and their prodigious, grits-and-gravel back catalog (three group albums and seven solo albums, all available for free on their website). Not surprisingly, they’ve also earned more than their fair share of detractors, who call them a flash in the pan or, worse yet, “horrorcore” revivalists. But this does not faze Odd Future in the slightest. They are, after all, f—ing unicorns, creatures that just seem unreal, not to mention slightly magical, and they don’t have time for the haters. But today, hip-hop’s brightest hopes are riding the Chinatown bus. Seems all the hype in the world couldn’t get them train tickets to Philly, or, God forbid, seats on an airplane. Tyler, Hodgy Beats (with whom he appeared on “Late Night”), Domo Genesis, Left Brain and producer Syd tha Kyd do their best not to terrify the elderly Chinese women who are making the trip with them, preferring instead to listen to new songs on massive headphones. As a collective, they are always working, but really, everything is pointing toward the upcoming release of Tyler’s Goblin album, on XL Recordings. The video for its first single, “Yonkers,” produced entirely by Tyler himself, was on its way to breaking the million-view mark while they were on the bus, thanks in no small part to its sputtering backbeat, Ty’s jaw-dropping verses and the shocking video, in which he devours a hissing cockroach, vomits, removes all his clothes and hangs himself. Big things are happening, even if the Odd Future kids — especially Tyler — don’t seem willing to admit it. But can they cross over to the mainstream? It would take, to say the very least, a rather seismic shift in popular tastes, but I suppose anything is possible. As I wrote last week , it seems like rock music is already undergoing a similar shift — in with the old, out with the new — and perhaps hip-hop is due. Things simply cannot continue on at their current pace. And who knows, maybe Odd Future are the group that will push things forward. Watching them run amok in Philly that evening — humping the city’s iconic “Rocky” statue, skateboarding around the streets — and then whip the crowd at the Barbary into a madcap froth, it’s not exactly a stretch to say they’re already on their way. Can they keep it together? Can they coexist? Can they free Earl? Shoot, they’ve already made it this far, by doing their own thing, their own way, so who’s to say they can’t take it all the way? They can be unicorns. They can be tables. And hopefully, someday, they can even be passengers in first class. Could Odd Future ever become mainstream successes? Should they? Sound off in the comments.

Rihanna, Kanye West Bring ‘All Of The Lights’ To All-Star Game

Duo perform hit new single at half-time of NBA super contest. By Shawn Adler Rihanna and Kanye West perform during the NBA All-Star Game Photo: Getty Images Hometown hero Kobe Bryant may have blistered the Eastern Conference during the first half of Sunday night’s (February 20) NBA All-Star Game, but it took Rihanna , Drake, and Kanye West to bring the Los Angeles crowd to their feet, with a rollicking performance during half-time of the gala sporting event. Wearing a jet black ensemble and flanked on either side by string instrumentalists, RiRi opened the set with an orchestral arrangement of her hit “Umbrella,” before segueing into the faster tempo of “Only Girl” and “Rude Boy.” Rihanna was joined on stage for her fourth song when collaborator and rumored former paramour Drake jumped up from the audience to sing the duo’s hit “What’s My Name.” The rapper might have even scored the most points of the night by managing to work “Happy Birthday” into the song’s lyrics for Rihanna, who was celebrating turning 23-years-old.

Nicki Minaj Rips Through L.A. Club Set During NBA All-Star Weekend

Rapper thrills crowd with abbreviated version of controversial ‘Roman’s Revenge.’ By Rahman Dukes Nicki Minaj performs at L.A. club Exchange during NBA All-Star weekend Photo: MTV News Hip-hop’s Barbie took her multi-colored wigs to Hollywood last night just in time to kick off the 2011 NBA All-Star weekend. Nicki Minaj, flanked by her sideman/homey SB, took the stage at club Exchange in downtown Los Angeles, just a few blocks from the Staples Center, where the All-Star festivities are taking place throughout the weekend. Not long after entering the massive venue, which was filled with a sea of Barbie fans, the Queens native made a beeline for the DJ booth and swiftly grabbed the mic from DJ Biz Markie, following a set by fellow rapper Rick Ross. Ross had just finished tearing through his own hits including club anthems “B.M.F,” “9 Piece,” “Aston Martin Music” and “Hustlin’.” But after Rozay, the Los Angeles audience got who they were waiting for. “Where my New York people at?” Nicki asked her fans as she stepped to the stage. From there, Nicki went into her latest single, “Moment for Life,” which features Young Money capo Drake. “I fly with the stars in the skies/ I am no longer trying to survive/ I believe that life is a prize/ But to live doesn’t mean you’re alive,” Nicki rapped as the audience sang and bounced along. But the best was yet to come. After cutting her song short during the Drake verse, the “legendary Biz Markie,” as Ross referred to the iconic MC, cued up Nicki’s controversial record “Roman’s Revenge” to the female MC’s surprise, sending the crowd into a rage. “I am not Jasmine, I am Aladdin/ So far ahead, these bums is laggin’/ See me in that new thing, bums is gaggin’/ I’m startin’ to feel like a dungeon dragon/ Raah, raah, like a dungeon dragon,” an amped Nicki rapped. Midway through her first verse on “Roman,” the MC stepped away from the stage and disappeared into the night for the final time. There’s been no word if Nicki’s abrupt ending was planned or not, but regardless, fans went home happy, comfortable with every penny spent to catch a glimpse of rap’s most-wanted girl. For the remainder of the weekend, Nicki is slated to appear at a host of events including a grand finale at the same location on Sunday night featuring manager Diddy.
