Arcade Fire’s Album Of The Year Grammy Stuns Publicist

Merge Records’ Christina Rentz recalls her awards-show experience. By James Montgomery Arcade Fire at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images As the week draws to a close, many still can’t believe Arcade Fire managed to trump Eminem and Lady Gaga to win Album of the Year at Sunday’s Grammy Awards . And if you’re one of those who are still coming to grips with the upset, well, you’re not alone. Turns out, even the band’s publicist can’t believe it. In fact, on Grammy night, she had made peace with the fact that Arcade Fire seemed destined to go home empty-handed. In a new Billboard.biz story, Merge Records’ publicist Christina Rentz writes that, after watching her band go 0-for-2 during the Grammy’s pre-telecast awards (they lost both Best Alternative Album and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals to the Black Keys), she was resigned to the belief that the band would lose Album of the Year, too. In fact, she thought Eminem had it sewn up. “The production value was amazing, and it was incredibly exciting to be in the room. When Eminem came onstage and blew the roof off the place, I thought we were sunk for sure,” Rentz wrote. “But Jamie [Beck, Merge’s retail director] had been saying all weekend that we were going to win. She gave me very good reasons why, but I still didn’t think it was possible. As the night wore on, she persisted in her certainty, but it wasn’t until Eminem won Best Rap Album that I felt the familiar sweaty palms again.” When Album of the Year was announced, her feelings of nervousness quickly changed to jubilation — much to the consternation of those seated around her. “Barbra [Streisand] announced the Album of the Year: ‘And the Grammy goes to … The S-S-S-S-Suburbs ? We began screaming and jumping as our section emptied out with people muttering under their breath, ‘Who is Arcade Fire?’ ” she wrote. “The band accepted the award then immediately set up for their second song, with Win [Butler, the band’s lead vocalist and songwriter] putting his Grammy on top of an amp so he could pick up his guitar … my favorite moment of the evening! “They could not stop smiling and neither could we. Together, we had accomplished something pretty incredible and hopefully inspired musicians everywhere not to compromise when it is important.” And afterwards, having bested Eminem for the night’s biggest award, Rentz and Beck did what any newly minted Grammy winner would do: They partied hard. In their own way, of course. “We then phoned our label manager Stacy ‘Spott’ Philpott and said, ‘Holy crap, what do we do now?’ ” she wrote. “I still don’t fully know the answer, but at the time, it seemed like the best thing we could do was to get in our red Mustang, throw the top down, drive to the after-party to hug our friends in Arcade Fire, high-five their manager Scott Rodger and then get back to work on Tuesday, the release date for two new albums from Telekinesis and East River Pipe.” Were you surprised by Arcade Fire’s win? Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale Is ‘All Club Bangers,’ Pauly D Says

‘The hands immediately go up when that beat kicks [in],’ the ‘Jersey Shore’ DJ tells MTV News live about ‘Hold It Against Me.’ By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Britney Spears in her “Hold It Against Me” video Photo: Jive Britney’s “Hold It Against Me” has at least one fan fist-pumping: Pauly D. And he’s not alone! MTV News caught up with the “Jersey Shore” DJ via Skype to gauge his reaction to Britney Spears’ hotly anticipated new track, “Hold it Against Me,” and the accompanying video , which premiered Thursday on MTV. He was feeling under the weather during our live “MTV First: Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Video Premiere” discussion but kept his appointment: “It’s all good, man,” he said. “I’m a warrior!” Increasingly known for his night job as a DJ, the reality-show star gave a strong endorsement for the track’s club-worthiness. “It’s a major, fist-pumping track,” he said of the reactions the song has gotten when he’s put it on. “The hands immediately go up when that beat kicks [in]. It’s such a hard beat. It’s like ‘ba-ba-ba,’ they’re fist-pumping to that track. It has energy. I love it!” When Pauly is working a room, he’s careful to stay in tune with the vibe of the crowd. A track like Britney’s latest single is exactly the type of song he prefers to keep in his arsenal as a secret weapon. It’s the type of song he’s dubbed a “go-to” track when DJing. “I don’t make any set [lists],” he explained. “I read the crowd. And then if I’m playing something and I’m kind of losing them a little bit, I know if I drop that track, I bring ’em right back!” So how might a great DJ follow up a “go-to” song like “Hold it Against Me”? “You gotta keep that momentum after that track, so I drop my track immediately after that, ‘Beat Dat Beat (It’s Time To),’ ” he offered, in something of a good-natured plug for his own single. Pauly D’s position of privilege as an MTV star and budding DJ has, in addition to the obvious perks, afforded him an opportunity Britney fans would salivate over: the chance to hear much of her forthcoming new album, Femme Fatale, which doesn’t drop until March 29. “Seriously, it’s all full of club bangers,” he revealed. “And I’m so excited about it, because I cannot wait to play ’em in the club. Literally, you can play the majority of that album in the club. I love the way she went to that route.” In a move that displayed his increasing media savvy, Pauly refused to let any song titles slip, but he did reiterate that “they’re all club bangers. They’re a lot like ‘Hold it Against Me.’ [ Femme Fatale is full of] major, major, club-banging tracks.” Do you agree with Pauly’s “club banger” assessment of “Hold It Against Me”? Let us know in the comments! Don’t miss “Jersey Shore,” airing Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Deena Recalls Dirty-Dancing Past On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Everybody was like, ‘Oh my God, where did that come from?’ ‘ reality starlet says of her suggestive dance-team routines. By James Dinh “Jersey Shore” star Deena appears on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News Long before her fist-pumping days in Seaside Heights, “Jersey Shore” star Deena Nicole Cortese was already causing a commotion over her suggestive dance-floor skills. On the latest installment of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” the reality TV newcomer reminiscences about her dirty-dancing antics. “When I was 17, I quit cheerleading and started dancing,” Deena says on Saturday’s episode. “It was great because me and my one girlfriend were the captains of it, and we were, like, making up the dance moves. We got to pick out our outfits and I got to show my dance moves off. It kind of brought my music into the dance team.” With her newfound creative freedom, the New Jersey native whipped up a sassy dance routine. But the high school’s staff wasn’t too impressed with Deena’s choreography. “I remember making up this crazy dance move, like sexy moves, you know, like shaking your butt,” she admits. “Everybody was sitting there like, ‘Oh my God, where did that come from?’ ” Childhood friend Jaimie also remembers the controversy. “Our small town wasn’t ready for the dance moves that came out of Deena’s mind, and definitely made the teachers raise an eyebrow of what was going on,” she says. Despite the reaction of the faculty, the self-proclaimed “Energizer Bunny” says she really never understood why her routine was such a big deal. “[The teachers] were like, ‘Are they allowed to dance like that?’ I’m thinking to myself, ‘Yeah, we can dance like this,’ ” the reality starlet recalls. “It’s allowed. I’m not showing any boob or anything, it’s OK — God, open your windows,” she laughs at the memory. “There’s a lot out there.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Deena Cortese and Patrick Stump — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. ‘American Idol’ Hollywood Week Ends With A Ticket To Vegas

Clint Jun Gamboa, Jacee Badeaux, John Wayne Schulz and Julie Zorrilla among the 50 moving on. By Gil Kaufman Contestants audition on “American Idol” Thursday Photo: FOX And then there were 50. If you thought Wednesday night’s “American Idol” was harsh, the final night of Hollywood Week really brought down the hammer. Unlike the previous night, when the show dithered away with group dynamics, Thursday night’s (February 17) show jumped right into it, presenting what host Ryan Seacrest promised was one of the most talented group of Hollywood finalists ever assembled. And, for once, he wasn’t just blowing smoke, as some of season 10’s standout singers brought it and punched their ticket to next week’s Vegas round. Haley Reinhart, 20, barely made it through the previous round after forgetting her lyrics, but the 20-year-old Wheeling, Illinois, student was back on track Thursday night, growling out a gritty and bombastic “God Bless the Child.” Though we’d barely met Tennessee’s 24-year old Ashton Jones before — she was in Ashley Sullivan’s group the night before — she killed it with a soulful “Idol” favorite “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Confident 15-year-old Thia Megia got no shine Wednesday, but when she got back in the spotlight, she did it again, showing some supple vocal beauty with a cool “What a Wonderful World.” The girls definitely brought it, so it was up to the boys to prove they had it too. One of the rising stars, karaoke host Clint Jun Gamboa, peeled the paint off the walls with his dynamic cover of Ray Charles’ “Georgia,” a feat almost equaled on the same tune by sultry 22-year-old Tennessee office manager Kendra Chantelle, who traded bombast for buttery softness. Chris Medina went out of the box with an acoustic ramble through Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative,” which was also picked by onetime groupmate Carson Higgins. The blond beach bum played it straight with the band, doing a high-energy, slightly spastic soul shout, while Medina did a Dave Matthews-like folk strum take that didn’t go over as well. Able to play their instruments for the first time, a number of the contestants took the opportunity, including Los Angeles student Julie Zorrilla, getting jazzy at the keyboard on Sara Bareilles’ “Love Song.” Murfreesboro, Tennessee, emo kid Colton Dixon, who came on strong during group night, emoted his way through a dramatic version of Daughtry’s “What About Now,” while 16-year-old Florida student Brett Loewenstern strapped on his acoustic for a fragile stroll through Brandi Carlile’s “The Story.” Melodica-blowing soul man Casey Abrams keeps surprising, and he continued his streak by being the first “Idol” contestant to bust out a stand-up bass for a finger-snapping jazzbo dig at Ray Charles’ “Georgia on my Mind” that earned a standing ovation. Already without her ex-boyfriend by her side, Chelsee Oaks seemed distraught when former groupmate Jacqueline Dunford was forced to bow out of the competition due to illness. The Nashville waitress pulled it together and dug down deep for an emotional “Because of You” by Kelly Clarkson, but her nerves were evident. After producers dropped the age limit to 15, a number of teens have proven their worth, none more than 15-year-old Lauren Alaina, whose big personality and charming smile have worked their magic on the judges. The savvy high-schooler kept in judge Steven Tyler’s good graces by reprising her cover of his band’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” putting a cocktail-lounge spin on the bombastic ballad, complete with a piled-on-top curly hairstyle. We just met Jacob Lusk the night before, and the Bobby McFerrin-like master of vocal tics and tricks did his thing again with a whisper-to-a-scream gospel throwdown on “God Bless the Child.” It’s been awhile since we saw real-life cowboy John Wayne Schulz , but his strummy aw-shucks cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” mesmerized the crowd and inspired judge Jennifer Lopez to harmonize along. The unpredictable Sullivan proved to be the bundle of nerves she’s promised, falling apart singing Michael Bubl

New Wonder Woman Adrianne Palicki Will Make You All Sticky

Who’s that getting undressed in the invisible jet? It’s Friday Night Light s babe Adrianne Palicki , the newest Wonder Woman! Everyone’s favorite femdom superheroine is back in a new NBC pilot, now re-imagined as a billionaire CEO by day, an LA-based vigilante by night, and the CEO’s secretary some other times. The sadly never-nude Adrianne will be playing all three roles, but all fans really care about is how she’s going to fill out that eagle-emblazoned corset. Adrianne beat our early hopefuls Nadia Bjorlin , Erica Durance , and Charisma Carpenter to play the superheroine created by a man who had a long-term female sex slave living with him and his wife (look it up). 70s siren Lynda Carter , who starred in the confusingly titled 1976 TV movie The New Original Wonder Woman and the jiggle-icious series that followed, tweeted her congratulations to the new gal. Adrianne, while you’re taking over Lynda’s old role, how about re-booting (or re-boobing) her topless performance in the drive-in classic Bobbir Jo and the Outlaw and finally giving us a look at those naked knockers? What’s the holdup on your nude debut anyway? That’s what we wonder, woman.

By Gil Kaufman Waka Flocka Flame Photo: MTV News Rapper Waka Flocka Flame escaped unhurt from a gun battle that erupted outside his tour bus in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, and police are still on the hunt for the assailants. TMZ reported that Waka (born Juaquin Malphurs) was outside his bus when two cars pulled up next to it in the parking lot of Car Stereo Warehouse and opened fire, with four shots hitting the bus. According to an eyewitness, Waka’s security team shot back at the cars and struck at least one of them. Waka, 24, was not hurt in the incident, but was detained by police, who questioned him and three other men after the shoot-out. The rapper tweeted to his followers a short time later, writing “To my fans N world, I’m good, nothing is wrong with my health … See y’all in Cali for all-star #im1realassperson.” The Charlotte Observer reported that the shooting occurred around 4 p.m. as the “No Hands” MC was talking to fans and having his picture taken with them while the stereo on his bus was getting an upgrade. One person was shot in the shoulder, though police have not identified who that victim is. At press time, authorities did not have a motive for the shooting and were reviewing video surveillance recordings from outside the store for clues, but had not charged anyone in the incident. A spokesperson for the Charlotte Police Department could not be reached for comment at press time and the rapper’s spokesperson had not yet returned requests for comment. This isn’t the first time Waka ‘s been involved in gunfire. In January 2010 the rapper was shot in the arm while fighting at a carwash in Georgia over his jewelry. The Atlanta MC turned himself in last month following a December raid at his home that also netted mentor Gucci Mane. He was booked on charges including possession of marijuana and hydrocodone, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and violation of probation for driving on a suspended license. Lady Gaga Wears Condom-Inspired Outfit On ‘Good Morning America’

‘Born This Way’ singer promotes AIDS awareness and MAC lipstick on Thursday’s show. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga on “Good Morning America” on Thursday Photo: ABC You might have done a double take on Thursday morning (February 17) if you were having your morning coffee while watching “Good Morning America.” Yes, that was Lady Gaga up bright and early, and yes, she did say she was wearing a “latex-condom-inspired outfit” as part of her bid to promote AIDS awareness. Four days after her instantly legendary entrance at the Grammy Awards in an egg-shaped vessel , the singer donned a flesh-colored sheath dress with matching shoes and a sculptural off-white hat to talk with “GMA” host Robin Roberts. “MAC has been fighting for identity and for passion and love and protection for so long,” said Gaga of the MAC brand of cosmetics, which she said raised $34 million last year through its Viva Glam lipstick brand for HIV/AIDS-related causes, some of it courtesy of an ad campaign starring Gaga and singer Cyndi Lauper. The goal this year, said Gaga, again sporting the alien-inspired facial ridges that seem to be part of her latest persona, was to raise $50 million. She then gave Roberts a sample of the taupe lipstick and lip glass that she designed for MAC, which gives 100 percent of Viva Glam proceeds to AIDS/HIV prevention. “I want to get people started at home at a younger age with their children talking about HIV, talking about AIDS, talking about safe sex,” she explained. “My mother talked to me about sex at a young age, and she always taught me to be self-aware — that’s in my new song, ‘Born This Way.’ I say ‘My momma told me when I was young …’ My first experience with my mother that I remember mostly was when she would put her lipstick on in the morning and she would talk to me about life.” The bottom line, self-described activist and social-justice fighter Gaga said, was to speak to the people in your life about safe sex in order to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. Gaga also talked about her “genuine shock” at hearing her name called at the Grammys on Sunday night when she won the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance award for “Bad Romance.” “I so genuinely did not think I was going to win,” she said. “I really did, and I was so shocked and so honored and so humbled. And it was a very joyous day to sing ‘Born This Way’ for the first time.” Staying on message, Gaga then tied in the theme of the song with her MAC line, saying it is shame and stigma around the difficulty of talking to children about sex and AIDS that makes people not protect themselves. ” ‘Born This Way’ is about self love, and MAC AIDS Fund is about self love. … It is so much bigger than me,” she said. “It’s not about me at all. The song, when I wrote it, I just knew it was destined to reach so many people all over the world. The most humbling this for me this past weekend is watching the fans harness onto the record and … really enjoying the music and feeing uplifted and a sense of positivity.” Related Photos Lady Gaga’s Grammy Night The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga
