Arcade Fire, Esperanza Spalding, More Grammy Upsets: Experts Weigh In

Lady Antebellum’s big wins and Eminem’s major losses were also head-scratchers. By Gil Kaufman Arcade Fire at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images There were shocks aplenty at Sunday night’s 53rd annual Grammy Awards , perhaps none as out-of-the-blue as Arcade Fire winning Album of the Year for The Suburbs, their meditation on the search for meaning, joy and a way out of the endless rows of same-y homes around big cities. But the arena-rocking indie band didn’t score the night’s only big head-scratcher. Little-known jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding grabbed Best New Artist from a bummed Justin Bieber and critical-consensus front-runners Drake and Mumford & Sons; pop/country trio Lady Antebellum snagged Song and Record of the Year; and Eminem, up for 10 awards , took home just two in rap categories, losing out on Album of the Year for the third time. The Grammys have practically made confounding choices their calling card at this point, but even for veterans such as Los Angeles Times music critic Ann Powers, some of Sunday night’s winners (and losers) raised some deeper questions. “I was totally surprised by the Arcade Fire win,” she said. “I thought Eminem was going to sweep, and he did the opposite of sweep. I’m trying not to think of what that says about the recording industry, but that’s what [Sunday night] was a commentary on, not popular taste.” After all, Eminem sold more than 4 million copies of Recovery, while The Suburbs has sold a phenomenal (for an indie label) 484,000 copies but hasn’t come anywhere close to having the mainstream impact Slim Shady has had. Part of the reason Arcade Fire may have landed the coup, Powers said, is that there’s a new generation of people working in the music industry who came of age during the indie-rock revolution of the 1980s and 1990s and who are inspired by the band because they represent a look to the future, instead of the Grammys’ more familiar tendency to reward older career artists. “It made me happy, because they’re voting for moving the music industry forward, and that’s healthy that they’re ethically and aesthetically minded,” she said. “This is what we want music to be like in the near future — independent, artistically motivated more than motivated by commercial desire. We don’t want it to pander.” As for why Eminem was shut out in the big categories, Powers said despite his crossover success with songs like the more vulnerable “Love the Way You Lie” with Rihanna, the Detroit MC is still a bit edgier and harsher than many Grammy voters are comfortable with. That might also explain the success of Lady Antebellum, who are the polar opposite: a totally accessible, pop crossover band with very little to offend anyone (except, apparently, a few bloggers who have begun asking questions about what their band name means and whether it’s offensive). Powers said the loss by Lady Gaga in a number of major categories presents the female flip side to the Eminem problem, in that she is great for ratings, takes risks in her music and is very, very popular but doesn’t play well to conservative-minded voters. “She’s offensive to people who are upset by her queer rhetoric, and Eminem is offensive to women and parents and people who want more happiness in their music,” she said. While it was a huge victory for independent music, Maura Johnston, a writer for the Popdust music blog, said in some ways, Arcade Fire’s victory is a comfortable one for the Grammys. “The billboards I saw the most before the Grammys was the one featuring the Arcade Fire. The way their performance was touted during the whole show you would think they were U2,” she said. “They sold a bunch of records, they had that YouTube concert the day the record was released and they have an arena-rock bombast a lot of indie acts don’t.” In other words, with a slate of pop acts that either make them uncomfortable (Gaga, Eminem), don’t feel quite right for the big prize (Katy Perry) or lack any edge (Lady Antebellum), Arcade Fire won because they have the most resonance and depth. Plus, Johnston said, it didn’t help Eminem’s chances that early in his career he was cavalier about dissing the Grammys, and perhaps some of those voters are still holding grudges. “With Lady Gaga, they might not know what to do with her,” she said. “I think they worry with pop artists about the flash-in-the-pan syndrome, and they may be wondering, ‘Is this person going to last?’ Arcade Fire has lasted for three albums and a number of years, and Lady Gaga is great for ratings, but is she going to be around or will she be another Grammy punch line?” Both said the win by Spalding in the Best New Artist category was another example of voters going with the devil they know. Johnston said there was an audible gasp in the press room when the category’s winner was announced, but in retrospect, it isn’t all that surprising. “She’s a very virtuosic player, the record is extremely palatable, she’s a jazz artist who sings, which is the only kind of jazz record that wins the top awards, and it’s the kind of record you have on your iPod and leave out so your new girlfriend thinks you’re smarter than you are,” Powers said. “It’s accessible, intelligent music, and I’m glad it gave her a boost … but I suspect she’ll never have more than a boutique following.” As for who will benefit most from their exposure on the show, both agreed that Arcade Fire are likely to be pushed to a whole new level of success that could surpass even their career highlight of playing two sold-out Madison Square Garden shows last summer. “They had two songs on the broadcast, and it was an emotional win,” Johnston said. “I think Esperanza will go up by some thousand percent, but she wasn’t selling that much to begin with.” In the end, after years of trying to nudge their voting bloc and nominee slate out of the past and further into the now, Powers said despite lots of great performances from today’s hitmakers, such as Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber and Gaga, Sunday night’s show may have been a slide backward. Even with Arcade Fire’s win and show-closing song, the night’s biggest winner was Lady Antebellum, whom she described as “talented craftspeople who are a complete throwback to a certain kind of soft-rock/country sound that was popular in the ’70s and ’80s. But it was also a throwback for the Grammys themselves. The beef with the Grammys is that they always gave awards to Lionel Richie over Bruce Springsteen. However it happened [that Arcade Fire won], it was smart and good fortune for the Recording Academy, but if they had given the big one to Lady Antebellum, the show would have had a very different feel.” The good news, Powers said, is that the show pointed toward the future while also showing that the conventional recording industry is still focusing on bands like Lady Antebellum, “And I’m not sure that’s a band that puts us toward the future.” Which Grammy winners and losers were you most surprised by? Snooki And Bruno Mars Flirt At The Grammys

‘I got love for Snooki. I want the world to know that,’ the ‘Just the Way You Are’ singer announces on the red carpet. By Eric Ditzian Bruno Mars at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merrit/ Getty Images Love was in the air on the pre-Valentine’s Day red carpet at the 53rd Grammy Awards on Sunday night, and MTV News guest correspondent Snooki was at the center of the action. The “Jersey Shore” star asked Drake to serenade her, wondered if Jay Sean would offer to smush her and asked Bruno Mars if they might ever end up in a relationship together. Judging by Mars’ reaction, he just might be down, because when the “Just the Way You Are” singer stopped to chat with Snooki, the two couldn’t quit paying tribute to each other. “I’m very, very excited [by] everything that you’re doing,” she told him. “You’re probably the greatest songwriter I’ve ever seen. And I’m not lying.” Mars then announced to the camera, “I got love for Snooki. I want the world to know that.” The pint-sized party girl responded by saying, “Yay! Can you see us as a couple?” And then the two went into some impromptu fist-pumping, which is almost grounds for legal marriage in Seaside Heights. At the Staples Center in Los Angeles, though, Mars already had enough on his mind. He was up for seven nominations, including Best Rap Song (“Nothin’ on You”), Song of the Year (“F— You”) and Record of the Year (“Nothin’ on You”). By the end of the night, though, he only came out on top in one category: Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Just the Way You Are.” But at least for a few minutes, the singer/songwriter was able to wipe away any nervous energy about the impending awards and throw his hand in the air alongside Snooki. “Oh yeah, that’s hot. I love it,” she said. “You look good tonight. Just sayin’.” Snooki then asked Mars what he was doing after the big show, and he responded, “I don’t know. Why don’t you hit me up when the cameras are gone, you know what I’m saying? You could just kick it.” What do you think about a Snooki-Bruno Mars hook-up? Share your opinions in the comments. Justin Bieber Runs Into Esperanza Spalding Backstage At The Grammys

Plus: Nicki Minaj gets grabby with Snooki, Arcade Fire give high-fives and more from behind the scenes. By James Montgomery Esperanza Spalding and Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — There was nothing left to do after his band shocked pretty much everyone by taking home Album of the Year for The Suburbs (and breaking into an elated performance of “Ready to Start” that closed the show), so Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler was just handing out high-fives. Backstage at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards , on the way to the press room to share his feelings about winning the night’s top prize, Butler was doling out the high-fives to startled members of the media, a permanent smile stretched across his face. Equally as jovial — even though he lost Best New Artist to Esperanza Spalding — was Justin Bieber, who, after finishing an interview with MTV News , literally walked into Spalding backstage. But rather than be bitter, Bieber shook hands with the newly crowned Grammy winner, congratulating her on her victory. It was a long day of those kinds of once-in-a-lifetime interactions at the Grammys, as the biggest stars in music packed into the Staples Center to honor their own. Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Hudson embraced and laughed after the stirring tribute to Aretha Franklin that opened the show. Mumford & Sons huddled with their brass band minutes before sharing the stage with Bob Dylan, and Nicki Minaj was introduced to one of her “heroes,” Cyndi Lauper. Outside, on the Grammy red carpet, well, it was all about special MTV News correspondent (and “Jersey Shore” star) Snooki , who flirted with Bruno Mars, told Tyrese he was “hot” and informed R&B legend Ronald Isley matter-of-factly that he has “nice teeth.” Snooki told Hudson and Jennifer Lopez that they both looked fantastic and, when Lady Gaga arrived on the carpet inside her egg , not only did the Snookster shout that she “loved” Gaga, but LG returned the love, waving to her from inside the egg. “I’ve seriously got chills!” Snooki enthused. Elsewhere, Snooki let Minaj grab a handful of both her breasts, she pouted when Rihanna didn’t walk the carpet, and, when Lil Wayne blew by, huge cigar in his mouth, she tried to stop him by shouting his name. He didn’t hear her, and Snook was upset. “That sucks,” she sighed. “I love him.” It was, to be honest, probably the only low point of the entire day. That’s how these things tend to go, especially when there are so many stars in such a small place. High-fives all around. Lady Antebellum Win Song Of The Year Grammy For ‘Need You Now’

Group beat out Eminem and Cee Lo Green for songwriters award. By Gil Kaufman Lady Antebellum Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s a good thing both Eminem and Cee Lo won Grammys earlier in the night, because when it came time for the first of the “big three” awards handed out on the telecast, they had to keep their seats. The songwriters award, Song of the Year, went to Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now,” which beat out Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Cee Lo’s “F— You” (listed as “The Song Otherwise Known as ‘Forget You’ “), and tracks by Ray LaMontagne and Miranda Lambert. The swaying ballad by the country trio, who’d already won three awards earlier in the night, performed a tribute to Teddy Pendergrass and enjoyed one of the best-selling albums of 2010, seemed to take the group by surprise when it was announced. There was plenty of high-fiving and a fair amount of hand-on-mouth shock from singer Hillary Scott. Mandolin and guitar player Dave Haywood summed it up when he said, “What an amazing year, we are so blown away,” giving props to their management, who they said were behind the anthem that completely turned the group’s world upside down. Scott thanked the fans and radio, saying breathlessly, “this past year has completely changed our life, and love you all so much, thank you.” The win by Lady Antebellum helped slow down some of the preshow hype about Eminem possibly sweeping the top prizes, although at press time the rapper still had shots at Record of the Year and Album of the Year. The loss for Slim Shady continued the night’s shut-out for his hit collabo with Rihanna, “Love the Way You Lie,” which helped fuel the massive sales for his comeback smash album, Recovery . Cee Lo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Muppets Light Up Grammy Stage

Lady Killer crooner teams with puppets and Oscar-winner for psychedelic performance. By Mawuse Ziegbe Cee Lo performs during the 53rd annual Grammy Awards Photo: The Recording Academy/CBS We knew that Cee Lo’s Grammy performance would be “weird and cool,” and the throwback MC delivered a dollop of campy whimsy to his stage takeover by teaming up with a slew of colorful, amped-up Muppets and inviting Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow for the ride. Fresh from a Grammy win earlier in the night for Best Urban/ Alternative Performance, the Lady Killer crooner held court on a space-age set populated with alien-like Muppets and cartoony rockets sporting “Cee Lo” on the sides. Groovy extraterrestrial puppets, including a creature with a detached brain and a drummer with unruly rods snaking from its head, bopped along in the background as Cee Lo worked a grand piano for “Forget You” in an extravagant jumpsuit replete with red, blue and yellow feathers and a glittery headpiece recalling Elton John in his psychedelic heyday. (Check out photos of Cee-Lo and all the other Grammy performances from this year’s show.) Rocking a much more subdued catsuit (also recalling the disco era with its plunging neckline), Gwyneth Paltrow ascended down the stairs for the second verse, marking the first time the pair have publicly performed Cee Lo’s smash — Paltrow revamped it on “Glee” — together. The Oscar-winning actress joined in the loopy fun, bellowing, “I really hate your hate your ass right now” at the Goodie Mob alum. Then the star swung onto the piano for the bridge and she and Cee Lo belted the whiny “Why!” cries. The Gnarls Barkley frontman stood up and Paltrow stood on the piano as the pair and their puppet friends rode out the rest of the song. MTV News got some inside information about the performance just days before Cee Lo, Paltrow and their puppet posse worked the stage. Jim Henson Company CEO Brian Henson said the set was inspired by the marionette mob’s recent theater turn. “We have a live theater show in New York called ‘Stuffed and Unstrung,’ and we’ve taken a bunch of the characters from that cast and made them into a band and backup singers for Cee Lo,” Henson said of the fuzzy puppets from the made-for-grown-ups improv show. “He’ll be backed by puppets who will make up a very weird and cool band.” Henson said the idea to sing with the puppets came from Cee Lo, who approached the Henson Company with a concept of what he wanted to do. “We had never worked with him before, and he’s just a fabulous guy,” Henson said. “I think he’s a lifelong fan of the Muppets, and he had a pretty good idea of what he wanted.” What did you think of Cee Lo’s Grammy performance?
