‘American Idol’ Crooner Brett Loewenstern Scores Fiery New Orleans Audition

Flame-haired 16-year-old victim of bullying impresses judges with soulful rendition of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Brett Loewenstern Photo: FOX Another night of “American Idol, another teen overcomes adversity and shows off impressive vocal chops. As the “Idol” train rolled in to New Orleans for season ten’s second day of auditions, Brett Loewenstern made his mark on the judges with his smooth-as-silk voice and mop of red hair, handily winning over the panel despite his tough past. Sporting a striped T-shirt, skinny pants and those red spirals — which he tames with baby oil — the 16-year-old Boca Raton, Florida native captivated Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson with his easy take on the epic Queen classic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Lopez said the performance reminded her of the vocal stylings of British group Simply Red, who boast flame-haired crooner Mick Hucknall as the soul outfit’s velvety-voiced frontman. Loewenstern’s family gleefully watched the audition via monitors alongside Ryan Seacrest, with the crooner’s younger brother proudly pointing out his singing sibling. When the audition ended, Loewenstern happily burst out of the room and was enveloped in hugs by his waiting family. Although the audition ended on a triumphant note, the performance capped off years of struggling socially at school. Loewenstern recounted harsh years stemming from elementary school, during which he lacked friends and had to deal with unrelenting bullying. However, the teen singer eventually embraced the unique qualities that once drew taunts, dubbing himself “a green apple in a pile of red apples.” “I had an epiphany at one point,” he said. “I finally became happy in my own shell, and now it’s like, [if] someone doesn’t like me it’s cool. ‘Cause as long as I like me that’s all that matters.’ The ginger-haired teen also had a message for everyone on both sides of the bully battle: “Be yourself, because there’s only one life to live.” What did you think of “American Idol” on Thursday? Steven Tyler’s Best ‘American Idol’ Quotes From New Orleans

‘From my melodic sensibility, it was really delicious,’ new judge tells one contestant. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler Photo: FOX Night number two of “American Idol” season 10 was shorter than the first, but just as sweet, particularly if you are a fan of new judge Steven Tyler . The unpredictability and wackiness of the Aerosmith frontman is quickly becoming one of the most entertaining aspects of the show. “Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe recently told MTV News that Tyler will be on a tape delay when the show goes live, but even though he is already bleeped out accordingly during these first few weeks of audition rounds, his unique commentary and compliments deserve a recap of their own. So without further ado, here are Thursday night’s (January 20) top Tyler-isms:

‘American Idol’ New Orleans Auditions Find Talent, Tearjerkers

Paris Tassin’s emotional story and rich voice bring tears to Jennifer Lopez’s eyes. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Night two of the first week of “American Idol” auditions brought the judges to New Orleans, where the city’s legendary party attitude was in rich supply, along with some pretty impressive voices. After Wednesday night’s season 10 debut, which brought modest ratings but a breakout star in Aerosmith singer and judge Steven Tyler , the new panel seemed to settle into their roles: Tyler as the quick-witted jive turkey unafraid to tell it like it is while heaping praise when appropriate; Jennifer Lopez as a less loopy, warm-hearted Paula Abdul type; and sole returning judge Randy Jackson as the cheerleader who sometimes acts like a mean guy with his vicious putdowns. The night got off to a promising start with 21-year-old piano teacher Jordan Dorsey, who opened the dusty chestnut “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in a traditional fashion and then switched it up into a jazzy, finger-snapping soul swing that gave Jennifer Lopez goose bumps. Tyler, who knows a thing or two about luscious lips, was also impressed with Texas marketing analyst/ food blogger Sarah Sellers, 28, who put an R&B spin on Bob Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love.” The Aerosmith singer quipped, “You had me sold from the second you laid eyes on me,” providing yet another one of his soon-to-be-signature jokey non-sequiturs . Some came to sing, some came to gawk at J.Lo and, in the case of ship builder Jovany Barreto, to croon a bit of Luis Miguel and make goo-goo eyes at Lopez. It must have worked, because he made it to Hollywood and proved his friends wrong by ripping off his shirt for the singer, getting some unexpected help from Tyler and Randy Jackson, who joined him in the skin show. “What the heck just happened in here?” said a confused Lopez. “You knew this was going to happen when you got people like us.” There was plenty of talent in the Crescent City, including cosmetologist Jacquelyn Dupree, 24, who brought along pictures from Baton Rouge native Jackson’s high school football coach and some serious smoky pipes for the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand by You.” Social outcast Brett “I Got This” Loewenstern, 16, spoke out against bullies after a lifetime of being picked on and was the first official rocker to take the stage in front of his idol Tyler. He went bold with Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and, frankly, he kind of killed it with some sweet soul and a falsetto that wowed the rocker. “You were fabulous,” Tyler raved. But even a Mick Jagger-like mouth couldn’t save 24-year-old dishwasher Gabriel Franks from the reject pile when he aggressively murdered the melody of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” That led to the predictable montage of dinosaur moaners, growlers, falsetto glass crackers, spoken-word screamers and just-plain yellers. The judges were clearly not expecting what came out of 15-year-old Lafayette native Jaycee Badeaux, the stocky high-schooler who killed Otis Redding’s “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” with some Justin Bieber-like falsetto sweetness. “You are so sweet and so cute! Your voice is really, really beautiful!” Lopez gushed. If the case is always solved in the last few minutes of “Law & Order,” then “Idol” has its own version of finding the culprit via the tear-jerking final contestant. Thursday night’s show ended with one of the most heartstring-pulling ones in recent memory. It wasn’t by chance that 23-year-old Paris Tassin chose Carrie Underwood’s “Temporary Home,” as its lyrics about being a struggling young mom hit home for the parent of a special needs daughter. Her rich, deep tones, exotic good looks and emotional delivery brought tears to Lopez’s eyes. “I do that for my daughter because I want to teach her, go for your dreams,” Tassin said as the judges put her through to Hollywood and Lopez welled up again at Tassin’s conviction and spunk. We Watched American Idol Last Night And That Sh*t Was _________

The new judges for American Idol made their debut last night with millions of people watching. The reviews are in and most people think the show was ____________. A judgeless mess. Steven Tyler and J Lo joined Randy to do everything BUT judge the talent. It was evident to anyone watching last night that the one thing missing was the mean. Critics weighed in throughout the show and flooded blogs with opinions throughout the night and the consensus is in. The talent is meh and the judges are blah. The first time new gatekeeper Jennifer Lopez had to face the essential task of delivering less than sunny news, she threw up her hands and cried, “This is awful. I can’t do this.” Even if a contestant had the voice of a deaf yak, she would simply look away, or default to a “deer-in-the-headlights” stare. When called on to deal with a similar unfortunate situation, fellow newbie Steven Tyler would fashion a pre-set look of empathy and offer a canned suggestion that the kid plow a less daunting path. For much of the show, Steven Tyler lusted after everything with 2 legs and for a second, you could almost forget he’s in his mid sixties. (Maybe he’s been mummified and preserved by drugs and alcohol.) But for the most part, his plastic face and and impromptu rocker squeals provided the lions share of the comic relief. (And there was very little.) Thankfully, Randy didn’t “dawg” us to death, but then again he didn’t dog anybody, all night. He never even said someone was ‘ehhhh, kinda pitchy’ which is usually what he ALWAYS says. J-Lo spent most of the evening whining about telling the contestants they sucked. Considering the fact that she was never known for her vocals, we’re not surprised she had a hard time telling people the truth. She obviously has a hard time telling it to herself. Overall it gets about a 4.5 on a scale of 1 to 10. What y’all think? Source

Lil’ Kim’s Cousin/Business Partner Is A Shady B*tch With The Rap Sheet To Prove It

Earlier this month, one of the employees at Lil’ Kim ‘s North Carolina business venture, Salon Se Swa, sent out an open layer accusing Kim’s cousin Katrise of being a shady boss. Late last week, Katrise’s shadiness apparently came home to roost. Lil’ Kim’s cousin Katrise Jones, who the rapper recently went into business with, was arrested last week on four felony charges of false pretense. She was also arrested for failing to return “hired property” worth over $4000. The two ladies opened a chain of Se Swa hair salons in Charlotte, NC. On January 14, 37-year-old Katrise was arrested at the salon located in Carolina Place Mall, in front of her stylist employees. Before this incident, a disgruntled employee went public with a letter detailing Katrise’s shady practices: “First of all, Katrise does NOT pay her employees and she is in so much debt that she hasn’t even paid her rent at the salon or her house. Which I hear she moved out in the middle of the night owing the landlord over $15,000. Poor Lil Kim trusted Katrise as so many others and Lil Kim needs to run the other way. I met Lil Kim and she is an innocent person in this mess that Katrise made. Katrise is a fraud and owes over $60,000 to people including employees, rents on her “shops”, her fabulous Range Rover. Here is a link to prove what I am saying. Inmate search on Katrise Jones. She has written over $15, 000 in fraudulant checks. She is what we call a HDM-a Hot Damn Mess!” SMH. People like this broad are the reason so many celebs are reluctant about putting they’re people on when they become successful. Source

Cake, Cage The Elephant Take Top Spots On Billboard

Cake debut at #1, but with lowest sales in SoundScan era. By Gil Kaufman Cake’s John McCrea Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images Droll Sacramento, California, rockers Cake might never again have the chance to snatch away one of the umpteen records held by platinum darling Taylor Swift . But next week, the group can say they bested Swift, even if it is, in this case, a somewhat dubious distinction. The good news is that Cake’s Showroom of Compassion marks the band’s first #1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart and their first album to chart in the top 10. The bad news is that their total sales of 44,000 also mark the poorest-selling #1 debut figures for a new album in the modern SoundScan era. (Swift had set the new standard last week, when her Speak Now moved just 52,000 copies .) Another indie band took advantage of the slow new-release traffic to notch a career high. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, Cage the Elephant’s Thank You, Happy Birthday will come in at #2 on sales of 39,000, an impressive feat for the hard-touring band’s second major-label album. The only other new face in the top 10 is country act Steel Magnolia , whose self-titled effort lands at #7 (28,000). The rest of the top 10: Swift, Speak Now (#3, 35,000), Bruno Mars , Doo-Wops & Hooligans (#4, 32,000), Nicki Minaj , Pink Friday (#5, 32,000), the “Country Strong” soundtrack (#6, 29,000), Rihanna , Loud (#8, 28,000), Mumford & Sons , Sigh No More (#9, 26,000) and Kanye West , My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (#10, 25,000). Otherwise, it’s mostly single- and double-digit dips for the majority of the albums in the top 50, with just a few exceptions, including Cage the Elephant, whose self-titled debut surges back onto the charts at #59 as sales spiked by 113 percent to more than nearly 7,000. Over on the iTunes singles chart, Britney Spears sprints to the top with “Hold It Against Me,” which pushes Mars’ “Grenade” down to #2, followed by Enrique Iglesias ‘ randy “Tonight,” Katy Perry ‘s “Firework,” Wiz Khalifa ‘s “Black and Yellow,” Avril Lavigne ‘s “What the Hell,” the Black Eyed Peas ‘ “The Time (Dirty Bit),” Ke$ha ‘s “We R Who We R,” Lil Wayne ‘s “6 Foot 7 Foot” and Kanye West and Jay Z ‘s “H.A.M.” Gwyneth Paltrow’s well-received “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig surely helped the second collection of “Country Strong” songs hit #1 on the iTunes albums chart (the company does not release specific sales data). Right behind are Mumford & Sons, Cage the Elephant, the first “Country Strong” disc, Cake, the Black Keys ‘ Brothers , Christian act Lecrae ‘s Rehab: The Overdose, Kanye West, Daft Punk ‘s “Tron: Legacy” soundtrack and Mars’ debut album. It should be another modest week next time around, with new releases from the Decemberists , the Script , James Blunt and Social Distortion , as well as the latest Kidz Bop collection. So Why is Black Swan a Huge Hit, Anyway? (Hint: Lesbians)

As alluded to in this morning’s edition of The Broadsheet, everyone in Hollywood seems stunned by the success story that is Black Swan . Even filmmaker Darren Aronofsky says he can’t make heads or tails of the phenomenon, which has earned recognition everywhere from manic-comic Saturday Night Live segments to the supermarket-tabloid media obsessed with star Natalie Portman (now pregnant by and engaged to marry on-screen dance partner Benjamin Millipied). “I get the teenage-girl part of the audience because it’s a coming-of-age story about a girl becoming a woman. But older people are seeing it too,” he told the LA Times . “I don’t know if even I understand it.” Oh, Darren — don’t start being modest now : Let’s hear it for lesbians!
