Nicki Minaj Says Appearing On ‘Saturday Night Live’ Is ‘Monumental’

Singer is musical guest on this weekend’s show, hosted by ‘Social Network’ star Jesse Eisenberg. By James Montgomery Nicki Minaj Photo: NBC / Broadway Video Fresh off the debut of her “Moment 4 Life” video, Nicki Minaj is gearing up for another rather momentous event: her appearance as this weekend’s musical guest on “Saturday Night Live.” And though it’s most definitely happening, Nicki still can’t believe it. And she won’t, not until she’s seen evidence to the contrary. This could prove problematic since, y’know, the show is live and all. “Being a part of ‘Saturday Night Live’ feels absolutely incredible. I still don’t even believe it’s true, I’m not even going to believe it’s really happening until — well, I’m going to DVR it, because I can’t watch it, because I’ll be on it,” she told MTV News, laughing. “But until I see it back on DVR, I’m not even going to believe I was really on the show. This is epic, this is monumental, this is historic stuff.” For a girl who grew up in New York (just like this weekend’s host, newly-minted Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg ), performing on “SNL” — a show that’s nearly as iconic as the city itself — is a dream come true for Minaj. “I mean, to be raised in New York, and to always hear about ‘SNL,’ ” she said. “I never had the honor of getting a pinkie toe in the building, now [I’m] here and it feels incredible.” She spent the days leading up to the show filming teaser commercials with Eisenberg and “SNL” castmember Kenan Thompson, and Minaj is taking the same approach when it comes to talking about her performances: She’s not revealing much. But you can probably guess at least one of the songs she’ll be doing. “Well, all I can say is that it’s going to be a ‘Moment 4 Life,’ ” Minaj smiled. Nicki Minaj’s Career Full Of Life-Altering Moments

A look at Pink Friday star’s highlights as ‘Moment 4 Life’ video debuts. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: Christopher Polk/ AMA2010/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj ‘s “Moment 4 Life” is an inspirational joint in which the Queens MC speaks with naked emotion about living out her dreams. The accompanying visual, which Minaj’s Young Money labelmate Drake has called “a fantasy video,” is slated to premiere Thursday (January 27) at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. In honor of the Pink Friday star’s latest video, MTV News is taking a look at some of Minaj’s real-life fairytale moments, from getting co-signs from Lil Wayne and Jay-Z to scoring her own lipstick shade. Weezy Introduces Nicki After spotting the lyrical spitfire on a street DVD series, Wayne roped the promising Queens native into his Young Money collective. Minaj hit the road with Weezy on the I Am Music Tour and later dropped her breakout mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty in 2009. DJ Holiday, who hosted Scotty with Minaj, predicted the upstart spitter had a bright future ahead. “It’s a good opportunity to always find that new chick in the game,” he said. “She’s gonna have a good, successful career. It’s hard to find that somebody who has that niche, that star power. She can rap, she can sing. She connected with everybody in the streets.” Nicki Gets A Jay-Z Co-Sign She already had Wayne in her corner, but by early 2010, Nicki got an endorsement from another powerful Carter: Jay-Z . Hov suggested to Robin Thicke that Minaj jump on the crooner’s “Shakin’ It 4 Daddy,” a collabo that would be followed by high-profile matchups with everyone from Mariah Carey to Usher. Thicke even helped ramp up Minaj’s profile by trotting her out for performances on “106 & Park” and “The Late Show With David Letterman.” “Jay-Z is a person in hip-hop that you almost don’t think he exists until you meet him,” Minaj explained to MTV News last February. “It’s almost like he’s bigger than a person. He’s a mythical figure. That’s a great way to describe it. I was like, ‘Jay-Z knows me?’ I didn’t think he knew who I was, let alone recommend me for something.” Minaj Rocks Madison Square Garden with Wayne, Jay, Drake For New York-area hip-hop artists, ripping the Madison Square Garden stage is a status-cementing moment that few are able to realize. But not only did the Young Money Barbie perform on the famed stage, she got to take the mic alongside Jigga, Wayne and Drake when Hov touched down on 34th Street for his Blueprint 3 Tour. “Madison Square Garden? I’m from New York,” Minaj said at the time. “This means the world to me — to be there with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Drake. It was the stuff that dreams are made of for a girl. Girls aren’t usually in those unique little circles.” Nicki Lands a BET Award Proving she was becoming an unstoppable force, Minaj managed to snap up her first major award with no album out. The Young Money raptress snagged Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the 2010 BET Awards in June, solely on the strength of her much-bumped mixtapes and features with everyone from Ludacris to Yo Gotti. Minaj took the moment to comment about the state of female MCs, and, perhaps, subtly send a message of peace to fellow femcee Lil’ Kim , who had been throwing jabs at the lyricist. “I think it’s so important right now for positive energy among women,” she said. “I’m fighting for women.” Nicki Scores VMA Love Later in the summer, with her #1 hit “Your Love” getting pumped in cars and clubs across the nation, Minaj scored her first MTV VMA nomination for Best New Artist . “I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven,” Minaj said about her debut VMA nom. “I definitely thought I’d get one someday, but not before I put the album out. I never thought I’d get a nomination [this year]. … I didn’t even think I’d get invited!” Minaj went on to rock “Check It Out” at the pre-show in a space-age catsuit alongside will.i.am. Minaj and Drake Get Hitched — On the Web The voluptuous lyricist and her heartthrob labelmate nearly brought the Internet to its knees when they announced they were married on their respective Twitter accounts. Although the union turned out to just be a playful prank, her Barbz’ heads almost exploded the one weekend she appeared to be off the market. “Drake is just my little brother, and I kid with him all the time,” she explained of the pretend nuptials. “We were just being crazy. I think we were a little bit bored. There’s really never a dull moment. I wouldn’t say we were bored; I would say we were being mischievous.” Minaj Rips Up Legends on ‘Monster’ As she was playing Internet pranks, Kanye West’s “Monster” track dropped, and asserted Minaj’s lyrical dominance to anyone who might have doubted the spitter’s vocal chops. Helming the last verse on a star-studded posse cut that includes Jay, ‘Ye and Rick Ross, Minaj’s beastly attitude, demented lyrics and unabashedly badass flow handily outshined her more-established collaborators. “It was a moment in history,” Ross later said of Nicki’s verse. “I knew then she’s one of the greatest.” Minaj’s and Eminem’s Alter Egos Up the Ante Just before Minaj’s much-anticipated Pink Friday debut dropped in November, the MC revealed she had scored a rare, top-notch feature for a debut artist: Eminem. Minaj and Em traded bars as their deranged alter egos on “Roman’s Revenge,” which arguably quieted any doubts about her status as full-fledged rap force. “It was the most fun song on Pink Friday ,” she said. “It gave me life.” Minaj Kisses Fame Hello with Her Own Lipstick Even with monster records with big boys of hip-hop like Kanye and Em under her belt, Minaj proved she’s still the ultimate girl’s girl by unveiling her own lipstick with MAC . Minaj nearly caused a riot in Times Square when she went to greet fans milling about to check out the Pink Friday special-edition shade. “She keeps it real and is so personable,” an amped fan told MTV News about her “idol.” “The guys give her respect because of her lyrics.” Minaj’s “My Time Now” Documentary Premieres Following in the footsteps of Drake, Minaj let MTV’s cameras tail her as she prepped Pink Friday, hit the VMAs and traveled to her native Trinidad for the first time in seven years for “My Time Now.” Viewers not only saw her business skills up close and got a glimpse as she laid down the vocals for “Roman’s Revenge,” they also received a candid look at her family life and the person behind the pink wigs. “Everybody sees Nicki Minaj; they’re gonna meet Onika. They’re gonna hear my story, and it’s such an inspirational story, which I never really wanted to tell ’cause everyone always feels like you don’t want people to know too much,” Minaj said of the project . “But when I saw what [MTV and production company @radical.media] did, I thought, ‘People need to see this.’ It reminds you that everyone always feels like this is it, but there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and I feel like that’s what the doc says at the end.” Pink Friday ‘s Big Debut When her debut album finally hit shelves, it was clear the Barbie army was in effect. Minaj’s first outing hit the Billboard 200 at #2 , just behind Kanye West, moving 375,000 units in the first week. “I’m just so grateful and kind of still in shock. These numbers haven’t been put up since 1998,” she said, referring to Lauryn Hill’s debut. “It just makes me feel proud of my team, proud of my fans, everyone who has had something to do with my dreams. Finally, we are seeing this dream come to fruition. It feels incredible.” Minaj Live: “Saturday Night Live” and I Am Music II Tour In January, it was announced that Minaj, who once studied acting in high school, would be the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” this Saturday alongside “The Social Network” star Jesse Eisenberg. And earlier this week, Lil Wayne’s camp announced the newly freed rapper would be heading out on the I Am Music II Tour in March, and just like she was two years ago, Minaj would be along for the ride. Don’t miss the premiere of ‘s “Moment 4 Life” video, featuring Drake, tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by a live interview with the Young Money femcee that will continue on MTV.com. If you have questions for Minaj, tweet them with the hashtag #asknicki or upload a video question to Your.MTV.com . ‘American Idol’ Finds Tragic Stories, Aerosmith Groupies In Milwaukee

Jerome Bell, Scott Dangerfield, Alyson Jados and Scotty McCreery stand out in week two. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX The second week of “American Idol” auditions brought our judges to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the first visit to the beer-and-cheese-loving Midwestern town busted out of the gate with a surefire star in the making, as well as the by-now-familiar slow-motion glamour montage complete with Steven Tyler yelps and profane bleeps. The trip also served up one of the most touching “Idol” audition moments of all time and a healthy roster of talented young teens. Though the focus was to be on the auditioners this year, the episode opened with Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler doing an endearing a cappella duet of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” accompanied by an Altoids tin and some cheeky lyrics about bad singing. As if we could forget that Tyler is a world-famous rock star, right? But that was soon replaced by the froggy voice of Garner, North Carolina, native Scotty McCreery, 16, who wowed the judges off the bat with his perfect country rumble through Josh Turner’s “Your Man” and Travis Tritt’s “Put Some Drive in Your Country.” Both songs sounded like the work of a career cowboy crooner rather than a high school baseball prospect. “Well hellfire, save matches, f— a duck and see what hatches!” Tyler enthused to the howls of the whole “Idol” crew. “That’s beautiful.” Host Ryan Seacrest humored budding radio host Joe Repka, 19, an awkward communications major who lost the panel off the bat with his lame “radio voice,” then set them howling like dogs with a warbly operatic slog through Billy Joel’s “The Longest Time.” Emma Henry, 15, said she’s watched the show since she was 5, and her raspy, emotional “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper had rough spots but won Tyler over with its unique character. “I want this so bad; this is what my life is about,” the emo teen wept after judge Jennifer Lopez said no and Jackson reluctantly put her through. “Don’t disappoint us,” he cautioned. One of the bright spots in an otherwise grim day of auditions in Milwaukee was colorful belter Naima Adedapo, who killed it with a gospel-tinged slow-and-easy version of Donny Hathaway’s “For All We Know,” which was powerful, self-assured and oh-so-buttery. “I like you a lot,” said Lopez, who called Adedapo the whole package. They also gave a thumbs-up to wedding/ bar mitzvah singer Jerome Bell , 27, when the New York native slayed Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” thanks to high energy and a sugar-sweet falsetto. “So good, so good,” Tyler gushed. One thing has already become clear this season: Singing Lady Gaga is a terrible idea in an “Idol” audition. Every time. And don’t show up with giant toothbrushes or wearing your Civil War re-enactment costumes, because that mess doesn’t wash. Admitting that they lowered the age limit in part because of Bieber Fever, Seacrest said there have been a lot of stellar 15-year-olds so far this year, with startlingly confident California native Thia Megia proving them right after a soulful stroll through Adele’s “Chasing Pavements.” She set off an avalanche of 15-year-old gold-ticket winners, providing a glimpse of the youthquake that is sure to shake the Hollywood rounds. It’s unclear why 22-year-old Harvard grad and White House intern Molly De-Wolf Swensen even needs “Idol,” but the statuesque blonde proved she has some other skills with a smoky “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” that appeared to catch Tyler’s eye. “Who knew what was goin’ on at the White House?” Randy said, with Tyler adding, “That’s great. You got attitude, you know where to put it, geez, that was beautiful!” Day two brought more R&B belters, a (terrible) Obama impersonator, an operatic destruction of Bieber’s “Baby” and a Minnie Riperton slayer with some serious bad attitude. Then there was mild-mannered awkward loner accountant/funeral singer (is that even a thing?) Steve Beghun, who did a Jason Mraz-meets-Josh Groban warble that Tyler called “disturbingly great” and which was just good enough to get him to Hollywood. Milwaukee student teacher Scott Dangerfield, 22, looked like an indie-rock slacker but came on like a blue-eyed soulster when he sang Amos Lee’s “Dreamin’.” It felt a bit mannered but was so compelling to Lopez that she called it her favorite audition so far, counseling him to keep the grown-out Bieber hair and nerdy glasses. Hire a rock star and you’ll get a few groupies, such as self-avowed Chicago rocker girl and bartender Ali Jados, 26, who immediately caught her idol’s fancy. “Wow,” Tyler said wide-eyed while looking over the raven-haired beauty with the voluptuous mouth. “You look like you could be one of my … nope, I can’t say it. … One of my friends. ” She knew just what song to pick, too, growling out a cover of the Beatles’ “Come Together,” which Aerosmith famously covered in the disastrous 1978 “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” movie, segueing into a duet with Tyler on Aerosmith’s “Dream On.” Tyler appreciated that she sang one of his songs but said he was scared by how pitchy her performance was, though Lopez liked her stage presence and performance quality. Randy gave it a no while Lopez said yes, so it was up to Tyler, who faked left and then sent Jados to the next round. The night ended with one of the all-time “Idol” audition tearjerker stories, courtesy of Chicago’s Chris Medina, 26, who told the tragic tale of his fianc

Steven Tyler’s Best ‘American Idol’ Quotes From Milwaukee

‘Slap that baby on the ass and call me Christmas!’ new judge says after one surprising audition. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX In addition to the excitement and anticipation that is involved in watching the audition rounds of “American Idol,” the unexpected remarks that come out of new judge Steven Tyler’s mouth are quickly becoming just as (if not more) entertaining to listen to as the contestants’ vocal stylings. We weren’t sure Tyler could top his performance last week , but mere minutes into Wednesday’s (January 26) episode (after opening the show singing an a cappella “Idol” version of “Sweet Emotion” with Randy Jackson), we knew we were in for another night of Tyler treats. Here are our favorites from the Milwaukee auditions:

A Brief History of David Letterman Trying to Act in Sitcoms and Movies

The Late Show with David Letterman is dark this week (as it is more and more wont to be), but it’s hard to imagine a world in which Letterman is not a staple of our Late Night lives. Or, even weirder, imagining David Letterman as a sitcom actor. Before Letterman got his first show — an early morning talk show called The David Letterman Show — he made his mark, outside of his writing and stand-up, with an occasional foray into the world of prime-time television acting (notably with an alien named Mork). It’s truly a brief history, but here’s a look at David Letterman’s now strange flirtation with acting.

Fred Armisen on Portlandia and the Dream of the 90s

Of all the current Saturday Night Live cast members, Fred Armisen seems like the least likely to spin-off one of his Studio 8H characters for the box office. Not necessarily because he hasn’t been given the opportunity — after Will Forte’s disastrous MacGruber though, who could blame movie studios for not trying? — but because Armisen, who Lorne Michaels described as “an artist, not a careerist,” seems genuinely content to be part of Saturday Night Live ‘s ensemble cast. So it is a little surprising to see that after nine seasons with the show, the self-described “short-sighted” actor has gone ahead and created a new sketch comedy series for the IFC called Portlandia , which co-stars Sleater-Kinney founder Carrie Brownstein.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Star Angela Sarafyan Gushes Over Castmates, Director

Actress, who plays Tia, gives MTV News a ‘Breaking Dawn’ update straight from the set. By Jocelyn Vena Angela Sarafyan Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images Angela Sarafyan came onto the “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” set last November and was warmly welcomed by the director as well as her castmates. When MTV News recently spoke to Sarafyan, who plays vampire Tia of the Egyptian coven, she gushed about her experience on the movie set. “I went on-set and met Bill Condon and he is truly such a great, great person,” she said. “I’m honestly humbled by the fact that he is kind and generous and, with the enormity of this film, has been so graceful about giving every actor their time. He immediately put me on a great starting point. We were all in this incredible Egyptian casbah in Baton Rouge [back in November] and it was quite magnificent. It was quite easy. It’s not as pressure-filled as you’d think. It felt like an independent project where everyone’s having a nice time, no one’s pressured. It’s been that way almost every day that we’ve worked on this.” Three movies into the franchise already, the crew is currently in the midst of filming the final two films, “Breaking Dawn” parts one and two, and the “Twilight” newbie says that things are so relaxed on the set that she doesn’t feel like a rookie castmate. “I was telling my mom, and I say these kids, they’re [probably] people who are not very nice and they’re stuck up … and they’re the complete opposite. They’re very kind and sweet and normal and awesome,” she explained. “I don’t think I could find anything bad to say about a single person on the set. They’re quite humble and normal people. It was a delight to come into that. “About being the new kid on the set, there’s so many of us, we’ve all become a family ultimately,” she added. “It’s been quite easy.” Sarafyan even got to help create a bit of backstory in order to play Tia. “I always envisioned Tia like Cleopatra and Benjamin like Marc Anthony, so even though they’re the younger vampires, they’re very strong-willed and rebels. We have this entire history of how they were 4 and they met and they fell in love and at 16 they turned into vampires,” she explained. “It’s something along those lines. And it’s funny, I spoke to Stephenie Meyer and she has a similar idea of what we created.” Now Sarafyan and the rest of the cast are “actually in the middle of it all. We’re midway through and we’re not necessarily shooting as the script goes.” And as Robert Pattinson recently revealed, the big fight scene is currently being shot. “We’re shooting it on green screen, so it’s really quite unpredictable because we don’t know what we’re going to be doing day to day. Every character is pretty much in it except Ashley Greene’s character and Jackson [Rathbone’s] character. Were spending 14 hours a day hanging out with each other and it’s been really exciting because at the end of the day, we don’t know what it’s going to look like,” Sarafyan said. “It’s almost half the script, so it’s taking a while to shoot it.” Sarafyan’s next film is “A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy,” in which she co-stars with “Saturday Night Live” players Will Forte and Jason Sudeikis.
