Golden Globes Preview: Kings Vs. Geeks, Charlie Sheen And Sea Bass

Get the inside scoop on the Best Picture horse race, host Ricky Gervais and more before Sunday’s show, which airs live at 8 p.m. ET. By Eric Ditzian Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network” Photo: Sony Pictures On Sunday evening, Hollywood will gather for the 68th Golden Globe Awards , an annual shindig at which celebs in attendance are at least as interested in re-filling their wine glasses as they are in watching to see who wins. Emceeing the shenanigans once again will be Ricky Gervais , who last year guzzled beer onstage, hilariously eviscerated Mel Gibson and generally won rave reviews for his keep-the-show-rolling comedic talents. Gervais will have a new crop of Hollywood royalty to dis this year. Thus far, the 2011 awards season has been shaping up to be a two-horse race between “The Social Network” and “The King’s Speech” for top prize. But it’s anybody’s guess which film will triumph at night’s end in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category; even ear-to-the-ground prognosticators are split on the outcome. Other categories are more clear-cut. You can take it to the bank now: David Fincher will nab Best Director for “Social Network,” “The Kids Are All Right” will take home Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and Colin Firth will triumph as best dramatic actor for “King’s Speech.” Oh, and if Natalie Portman doesn’t win best dramatic actress for “Black Swan,” it’s a sure sign of the apocalypse. The Globes air live on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, and as always, MTV News will be reporting from the red carpet and post-Globe parties, so be sure to check out MTV.com for all of the latest awards-show developments. Also keep an eye out for our interviews with the night’s winners and losers. For added enjoyment, play a game of “Spot the Drunken Celeb.” The 1,300 guests will be sitting around tables, knocking back the booze and, if they’re smart, filling their bellies with food too. On this year’s menu is an appetizer of grilled eggplant and marinated artichoke, topped with a blend of edamame and red pepper hummus. The entr

Justin Bieber Biography

By now the story of how Justin Bieber came to be is the stuff of legend. In an age where fame is only a viral video away, Bieber’s meteoric ascension to pop super stardom is still an exception, not yet a rule. Born in Stratford, Ontario, to a single, teenage mother, Bieber grew up playing sports, while secretly teaching himself how to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. It wasn’t until he was 12, that Bieber was ready to show the world what he could do. After placing second in a local singing competition, his mother posted a video of his performance on YouTube for friends and family that weren’t able to attend. The video went viral, and Bieber’s mother continued uploading videos of Bieber covering a string of syrupy hits by the likes of Usher, Justin Timberlake and other future colleagues. justin bieber impresses usher When the former marketing executive of So So Def, Scooter Braun, accidentally stumbled upon Justin Bieber’s YouTube channel (he was actually trying to track down a different singer) he knew he had found a star. Braun literally hunted Bieber down — tracking down former teachers, school board members and even unearthing footage of Bieber busking in front of a theater. Though Bieber’s mother originally envisioned her son serving God through his music, she gave in to Braun’s aggressive advances. After continuing to build his profile on YouTube, Braun arranged a meeting between his keen protege and R’n’B impresario Usher. Bieber’s natural charisma and talent immediately impressed Usher — who had once been in Bieber’s shoes — who signed him to Raymond Braun Media Group. Just like that, the prepubescent tween from Stratford, Ontario, had a record deal with Island Records, and a new home in Atlanta, where his path toward super-stardom began. justin bieber releases my world By the time Justin Bieber released his debut EP My World in 2009, he already had the luxury of a mass following shrewdly constructed by his management team on YouTube. In short, there was no way this thing would fail. Couple Bieber’s arsenal of syrupy confection of R’n’B pop, with his newly polished urban teenybopper aesthetic (thanks in large to his Usher-appointed swagger coach Ryan Good) and tween girls everywhere had found their ultimate crush. The record debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard charts with four singles landing safely in the Top 100. It wasn’t long before Bieber-mania was as ubiquitous as text messaging, with the mop-topped one performing for everyone from Ellen DeGeneres to Mr. and Mrs. Obama. justin bieber releases my world 2.0 When Justin Bieber released “Baby,” the infectious lead single off his follow-up disc My World 2.0 , he had become one of the music industry’s foremost saviors — a camera-ready Messiah in purple sneakers and a straight-brimmed cap. The single propelled My World 2.0 to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, making Bieber the youngest male solo act to top the chart since Stevie Wonder did it in 1963. But by now, Justin Bieber had become more than just a best-selling pop star — the pint-sized pipsqueak from Stratford, Ontario had become a genuine cultural phenomenon. Gigs on Saturday Night Live , The View and The Late Show meant that in 2010, there was no escaping Justin Bieber. can justin bieber escape the backlash? Justin Bieber’s omnipresence in the media, and his lightning-quick rise to fame were sure to inspire backlash, especially in the quick-to-hate blogosphere. Bieber’s shrewd embracing of social media (the boy tweets!), and his easy-to-pick-on effeminacy (lesbians who look like Justin Bieber has become its own meme) made him an easy target for both critics and creeps. Internet trolls have perpetuated a string of maliciously preposterous rumors about the Biebster; no he does not have syphilis, no he has not joined a cult, and as far as we know he’s not dead. But despite his many critics, Bieber has been embraced by the cred-solidifying hip-hop community; he pals around with Drake, Ludacris appears on his album; and Kanye West’s admitted fandom led to a much-tweeted about remix of Bieber’s “Runaway Love” featuring none other than Wu-Tang’s street disciple Raekwon. love him or hate him, justin bieber isn’t going anywhere If Justin Bieber was the prince of 2010, he may just end up being the king of 2011. So for all the haters out there, a warning: Justin Bieber is here to stay. With his best-selling tour wrapping up in December, Bieber has spent the last year dominating the internet (he was the most searched celebrity in July), inspiring riots and hysterics everywhere he went (remember the riot in Long Island?) and performing in some of the most revered venues in the world. Bieber’s recent gig at Madison Square Garden was filmed for his upcoming 3-D biopic due next winter, and his new album will feature at least two songs produced by Dr. Dre. Yes, Dr. Dre — he of gun-toting NWA fame — is producing two songs for the grinning charmer with pearly whites from Stratford, Ontario. Is it the end of the world as we know it?

Daveigh Chase Is Hot New Talent

I don’t know anything about this Daveigh Chase chick, but I’m always on the look out for new “talent” so these are right up my alley. Here she is at some premiere for something I have no interest in looking hot in her little outfit. Look at those legs. I’d like to dip those things in chocolate and see where the night takes us. Obviously we’ll be completely nude and feeling good after killing a box of wine. Call me. more pictures of Daveigh Chase here

Dave Franco Talks ‘Fright Night,’ Working With Big Bro James Franco

As one of MTV News’ 11 for ’11, up-and-comer also plans to shop around a Web series about college life. By Kara Warner Dave Franco Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images If you are not already familiar with the name Dave Franco, chances are you will be soon. You might recognize the enterprising 25-year-old from his work on “Greek,” “Privileged” and “Scrubs.” He’s also appeared in several videos on FunnyOrDie.com, including a series called “Acting With James Franco” (James Franco is Dave’s brother). But these are all things from the past. Looking ahead to what’s in store for Franco in 2011, we’ll see him on screens big and small, in front of and behind the camera. When MTV News caught up with the up-and-comer recently, one of our 11 for ’11, we chatted about “Fright Night,” a TV series he’d like to get off the ground and whether we’ll see him at the Oscars in a skit alongside his big bro . MTV : We’ve talked about “Fright Night” before, and even though you’re sworn to secrecy about plot details, have you seen any of the film yet? Dave Franco : I have not seen anything, but I’ve only heard good things so far. I may have mentioned this before, but despite being a vampire movie, it’s very grounded and realistic. If I had to compare it to another vampire movie, I would say “Let the Right One In,” where everything is treated with realism but the only difference is that “Fright Night” happens to be hilarious too, mainly due to really funny actors like David Tennant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Colin Farrell is hilarious also. MTV : You’ve also mentioned that you’ve been working on your own material. What can you tell us about that? Franco : This past semester, I was working more behind the camera, and I directed, produced and wrote this Web series about college life. The basic idea stems from a conversation I had with my friend about how there are really only a handful of projects at most, whether it be film or TV, that really capture what college is like. For the most part, it’s all sensationalized and over-the-top. We decided we wanted to give a very HBO-type look at what really happens in college. We figured, ‘It’s crazy enough as it is; let’s just show what’s really going on.’ So we followed a handful of kids at USC throughout the semester, and the whole tone is a little strange, because it’s part documentary, part reality, part scripted. It’s kind of a weird mesh of everything, but it came out really cool. I hope people respond well to it. I’m happy, because we were able to capture what we set out for. … I went to USC, and watching this footage, I can attest that this is really what it’s like. This is what happens on a typical night. MTV : Sounds intriguing. Where do you want it to end up? Franco : We still need to figure that out. It’s all edited and everything is ready to go. We just have to figure out how we want to present it and where. We’ve always wanted to get this on TV, ideally an HBO, Showtime or FX. We’re almost using this Web series as a pitching tool that will hopefully generate some interest, and then we can go from there. MTV : What else are you working on? Franco : We’re filming a couple of Funny or Die videos later this month. There’s also a feature film that I’m writing for my brother and I to star in, where we play versions of ourselves named Davie and James. Without giving away too much, it all takes place around Thanksgiving and Christmas break around our hometown of Palo Alto [California]. Our real family will be in it, my real friends from home will be in it, and the vibe of it is going to be an extended version of our Funny or Die videos. It’s going to be difficult for me, because it’s now a 90-minute version of him giving me sh– and making fun of me. MTV : Don’t let him do that! Franco : [ Laughs. ] I’ll give it back, trust me, but it takes its toll. It wears on you. MTV : Any chance we’ll see you in something for the Oscars, since you have a pretty good connection to the host? Franco : There’s been talks of us doing a digital short for that. We’ll see, though. Potentially another installment in the “Acting With James Franco.” We’ll see. Check out MTV News’ 11 for ’11 — actors, musicians and TV stars who are about to have a huge year — all week long. ‘Glee’ Stars Stayed Up All Night For ‘Thriller’ Cover

‘It was probably one of the most physical numbers that we’ve ever done,’ Cory Monteith says. By James Dinh “Glee” cast films their “Thriller” performance Photo: Ramey Photo When “Glee” returns from hiatus in the high-profile post-Super Bowl slot, it’s returning in a big way, covering Michael Jackson ‘s “Thriller.” On Tuesday, the cast spoke to “Access Hollywood” about re-making the iconic tune, which will reportedly be mashed up with another yet-to-be-revealed hit. “It was a huge production. We we’re shooting that until 6:30 in the morning,” Cory Monteith told “AH” at the Television Critics Association press tour. “We shot all night, and it was probably one of the most physical numbers that we’ve ever done. I was lifting Naya Rivera at one point in the dance. It was really active. We had the whole USC band wrapped in to this number as you can see in the photos. It was awesome.” Photos of the cast filming “Thriller” surfaced on the Internet recently, depicting a prom night turned zombie affair. Jackson’s tune is just one of the many hits to be covered in the broadcast. Other songs featured in the post-Super Bowl episode include hits by the Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry and Lady Antebellum. Kevin McHale revealed that Jackson is his “favorite artist ever” and that he has been continuously requesting to cover a tune by the late King of Pop. “I’ve been pushing very obnoxiously for a very, very long time, so I’m beyond thrilled that we do Michael Jackson,” said the actor. Like the iconic music video, the “Glee” cover was an extravagant production, which was just fitting for star Dianna Agron, who couldn’t help smile throughout filming. “The whole night, everybody kept saying, ‘Why are you laughing so much? Why are you smiling so much?’ ” she said. “I was just in my element. I was in huge makeup, huge hair, huge costume, the stuff that I loved the most, which is why I loved ‘Rocky [Horror Picture Show’] so much.” Matthew Morrison isn’t in the number, but he watched it being shot. “We actually shot it, like, a couple nights ago,” Morrison told “AH.” “I actually went out to see it. We shot it in Long Beach and at a high school that we used their football field at. It was stunning. It’s so weird with this show. We keep outdoing ourselves. It’s like, ‘What is there left to do?’ This number is just fantastic.” Related Artists Michael Jackson

Taylor Swift Tops Billboard Again In Slow Sales Week

Singer’s Speak Now notches lowest #1 figures in SoundScan era. By Gil Kaufman Taylor Swift Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage Taylor Swift has smashed a host of records in her short career, but next week the 21-year-old, newly single star will notch another one that probably won’t land in her bio. In a dismally slow week on the Billboard albums chart, Swift’s Speak Now held on to the #1 spot again while posting the lowest totals ever for a #1 album in the SoundScan era. According to SoundScan, the disc moved 52,000 copies, which helped vault it over the 3 million mark, but also broke the dubious record set by the soundtrack to the movie “Dreamgirls” in January 2007, which had the previous #1 low at 66,000. Only one new title moved into the top 10, the soundtrack to Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Country Strong,” which came in at #10 on sales of 28,000 after climbing up from the #149 slot in its first week. The rest of the top 10 suffered double-digit percentage losses, including: Nicki Minaj , Pink Friday (#2, 39,000); Bruno Mars , Doo-Wops & Hooligans (#3, 38,000); “Tron Legacy” soundtrack (#4, 34,000); Eminem , Recovery (#5, 33,000); Rihanna , Loud (#6, 33,000); Kanye West , My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (#7, 33,000); Mumford & Sons , Sigh No More (#8, 31,000); and Jason Aldean , My Kinda Party (#9, 29,000). The Black Keys got a major bump before their “Saturday Night Live” appearance , moving up 12 spots to #14 with Brothers (25,000), which pushed the band over the 500,000 mark. Meanwhile, Jamie Foxx ‘s latest, Best Night of My Life, slid a bit more, dropping 5 spots to #16 on sales of 23,000. “Country Strong” fared much better on the iTunes album charts, coming in at #1, followed by the Black Keys, “Tron,” Mumford & Sons, West, Mars, Swift, Rihanna, a second “Country Strong” soundtrack compilation and Eminem. The iTunes singles chart was topped by Mars’ “Grenade,” followed by Katy Perry ‘s “Firework,” Enrique Iglesias ‘ “Tonight,” the Black Eyed Peas ‘ “The Time (Dirty Bit)” and Wiz Khalifa ‘s “Black and Yellow.” Though iTunes doesn’t provide sales figures, it was also a good week for Ke$ha, who came in at #6 with “We R Who We R,” followed by Lil Wayne ‘s “6 Foot 7 Foot,” Pink ‘s “Raise Your Glass,” Rihanna’s “What’s My Name” and Waka Flocka Flame ‘s “No Hands.” Things will probably stay mostly steady again next week with just a few new releases, including the latest from ornate rockers the Decemberists and albums by Cake , Cage the Elephant , James Blunt and the Script . Former Lawyer Swears: O.J. Simpson Was Innocent!

F. Lee Bailey helped O.J. Simpson beat the rap for murder. Now he’s trying to help clear his name in the court of public opinion for some reason. Evidence of O.J.’s innocence was held back in the 1995 trial in which he was acquitted in the murder of his ex-wife and her friend, Bailey says. In new legal papers , Bailey tells of four people who could have bolstered Simpson’s case but never testified, while offering a trial overview. WE WON! Simpson flanked by Bailey, left, and Johnnie Cochran in 1995. Simpson was found not guilty. Most Americans are convinced he is guilty, Bailey said, but his documents may persuade some doubters that he is innocent. ROTFL. Bailey wrote the documents, called “The Simpson Verdict,” as a proposal for a book that never materialized. He published them on his website Sunday. “It’s time somebody put out the real facts of the case,” he said of four people who never testified – a forensic scientist, an expert on battered women, a blood expert and the person who may have seen … wait for it … the real killer(s)! That witness, he wrote, saw a woman the night of the murders matching Nicole Brown Simpson’s description in an apparent confrontation with two men. Neither of whom was O.J. Simpson . Upon hearing of the murders the next day, the witness recalled what he saw, described it and even drew a sketch. The defense team decided not to call any of the four out of fear that additional jurors would be dismissed and a mistrial declared if the trial didn’t end. They also figured they had it won as it were, which was correct. Bailey said he thinks the real killers were out to collect a drug debt, killing Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, mistaking them for their targets. Although Simpson was found not guilty in a court of law, Bailey said it’s important to prove him innocent in the court of public opinion. “O.J. has what I call the damnation of an acquittal,” Bailey said. Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred, who represented Nicole Brown Simpson’s family during Simpson’s trial, said she doesn’t see any “smoking gun” in Bailey’s document that might persuade people who think he was guilty to think otherwise. If Bailey’s evidence were that strong, she said, it would have been used in his civil trial, where he was found liable for wrongful deaths and ordered to pay a $33.5 million judgment. Hard to argue with Gloria on that one. “If Mr. Bailey can’t think of anything better than trying to help the public reputation of O.J. Simpson, that’s really sad,” Allred said, also validly. As for the fact that he pretty much admitted the murders on several occasions, and the fact that come on, he totally did, Bailey had no comment.
