Foo Fighters To Return This Spring With ‘Massive’ New Album

Yet-untitled record is shaping up to be their heaviest to date. By James Montgomery The Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage The Foo Fighters , for the majority of their career, have been the kind of band that only operates on a really, really huge level (witness their two-night stand at London’s Wembley Stadium in 2008 for proof of this, or even the sprawling, double-disc In Your Honor album). So when Dave Grohl is saying that their new album is, well, “massive,” you’re probably going to notice. On Tuesday (January 4), Grohl spoke to BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe about the Foos’ still-untitled new album (which they had apparently just finished the night before, according to a celebratory tweet ), and from the sound of things, it’s going to be a big deal. “There’s 11 songs and, front to back, there’s not one sleepy ballad,” Grohl said. “The fact that we did it without any computers, it was just really simple. It just sounds massive. It’s different to any other Foo Fighters album, because it just sounds big. It was really inspiring.” The band began work on the album — which Grohl said will be hitting stores “in spring” — last September. They teamed up with super-producer Butch Vig (Nirvana’s Nevermind ), former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and, judging by the photo he posted on the band’s Twitter account, frequent Nirvana collaborator/former Foo Pat Smear too. But rather than go for a big studio sound, the band opted for a much, well, simpler approach. “It was really in my garage,” Grohl said. “You could put a minivan in there and that’s it. We entered into this project with a direction. The first song we started recording, the tape just started shredding.” And judging by the early results — a 10-second snippet of a song called “White Limo” the band tweeted on Monday — Grohl isn’t kidding about the massive part. Or the rough-around-the-edges garage bludgeon, either. This really could be their heaviest work to date. And now, with the recording out of the way, the Foos can focus on more important tasks — like picking the first single. “I don’t even know what the single is going to be,” Grohl said. “It’s hard to choose because it sounds like there’s more than one.” What are you expecting from the new Foo Fighters album? ‘Empire Strikes Back’ Added To National Film Registry

‘Saturday Night Fever,’ ‘Airplane!’ among other movies recognized by Library of Congress. By Jayson Rodriguez “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” Photo: FOX Thirty years ago, moviegoers were stunned when Darth Vader revealed in “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” that he was Luke Skywalker’s father. On Tuesday (December 28), however, there was no surprise when the venerable sci-fi flick was selected by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Film Registry, according to The Associated Press. The honor recognizes the iconic 1980 movie for being artistically, culturally or historically significant. A copy of the original film will be preserved by the registry at the Packard Campus of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia, for future generations. “The Empire Strikes Back” was produced by “Star Wars” auteur George Lucas but directed by Irvin Kershner. It was joined by 24 other films; more than 2,500 were nominated. The John Travolta-powered disco vehicle “Saturday Night Fever,” the Watergate drama “All the President’s Men” and Spike Lee’s biopic “Malcolm X” were among the popular titles to make the cut. The films will be added to a library that includes upwards of 550 titles, including Lucas’ “American Graffiti” and the first installment of “Star Wars.” Comedies including “The Pink Panther” and “Airplane!” were also selected by Librarian of Congress James H. Billington, who has picked every film in the registry since its inception in 1989. “Airplane!” is a hilarious spoof of disaster movies that starred Leslie Nielsen, who died less than a month ago at the age of 84. Ke$ha Rises From Oddball To Icon In 2010

This year, nobody defied description quite like Ke$ha, the pop oddity who shows no signs of slowing down. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: Venturelli/ Getty Images In January, when “Tik Tok” was just starting to hit, I described Ke$ha as “a 22-year-old pop confectionary/cautionary tale.” By November, when “We R Who We R” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, I had crowned her an “outcast icon.” The truth probably lies somewhere in between those two statements, but if there’s a better way to sum up the pop star’s rather incredible rise to fame, I am unaware of it. Because in 2010, there really was no one else who came close to matching Ke$ha, whether in terms of sheer chart dominance (“Tik Tok,” enjoyed the year’s longest run at #1, spending nine weeks atop the Hot 100), or pure WTF-ery. She began the year as a belching, squelching, booze-swilling party monster and ended it as perhaps the most unlikely of role models — an unrepentant oddball who not only dared to speak her mind, but defy conventions, too. And through it all, she remained largely unclassifiable, shifting between genres (pop, hip-hop, rock) and personas (dumpster-diving diva, Topanga Canyon bohemian, DayGlo star child) with each successive hit. And because of that, Ke$ha became one of the year’s most interesting characters, the kind of pop oddity that leaves critics alternately grasping at adjectives and scratching their heads. “I think ‘What is Ke$ha?’ is definitely the question, more than ‘Who is Ke$ha?’ because the ‘What?’ is really the thing, ” New York Times writer Jon Caramanica told MTV News. “When she first came into the game, she was this pop singer with a little bit of a country background, but [doing] this sort of whiny, white-girl rap … but, if anything, ‘Tik Tok’ proved there’s an entire audience of people who are pop fans, but who have a really high tolerance for rap music. Maybe they’re not going to buy a Kanye West record, but they’re not unafraid of hip-hop. And with Ke$ha, and her loose, ‘I don’t give a f—‘ approach to making these songs resonates with the loose, ‘I don’t give a f—‘ approach of the fans in listening to the songs. They hear something of themselves in her.” Of course, Ke$ha suffered for her, uh, art, becoming one of the year’s most popular punching bags — particularly following a pair of bizarre performances on “Saturday Night Live” — but as the year draws to a close, her grip on the pop world seems to be permanent. Not only is she the unlikeliest of stars, she’s also one of the most persistent … and love her or hate her, you’ve got to admit that she made 2010 just a bit more bearable, even if it was with her willingness to push the boundaries of absurdity. Well, her songs were pretty great, too. And she did it entirely her way. “I think Ke$ha’s definitely gone way past her 15 minutes of fame, [but] the appeal with her is that there’s an honesty,” Noah Callahan-Bever, editor in chief of Complex magazine, said. “In a market of totally prefab pop stuff, there’s almost a sloppiness to her whole persona, and I think that realness appeals to people. I think it doesn’t hurt that she works with the best producer in pop music, either,” he said, referring to right-hand man Dr. Luke. In 2010, thanks to that winning combination of pitch-perfect pop and pure, unfiltered weirdness, Ke$ha pretty much conquered the world. She won over fans and earned begrudging respect from the critics. And she wore dead animals on her head. Wherever she goes in 2011, I’ll follow. And I’ll likely be just as perplexed as the rest of you. Do you expect Ke$ha’s party to stop or keep rocking in 2011? Let us know in the comments. Javier Bardem on Biutiful, Barcelona, and the Economy of Exploitation (Oscars Included)

I could feed you that tired old line about Javier Bardem delivering the performance of a lifetime etc. etc. in Biutiful , but come on. Why lie? The reality is that Bardem has delivered such richly drawn, deeply layered work for years, from his role as doomed Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas in Before Night Falls to the right-to-die proponent Ramon Sampedro in The Sea Inside and even the affectless, coin-tossing killer Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men — all canonical characters of the last decade, all justifiably Oscar-nominated (with the latter winning). It is fair to say Biutiful ‘s struggling, terminally ill Barcelonan eclipses them all; so when will Bardem receive the awards-season recognition he deserves?
