Justin Bieber Is MTV News’ #3 Man Of The Year

In 2010, the pop star cleans up at awards shows, causes worldwide pandemonium — and turns 16. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Michael Caulfield/AMA2010/Getty/DCP Justin Bieber seemingly did it all in 2010. He sold out concerts, filmed a movie, released two albums and set girls hearts aflutter — all in the span of 12 months. Not only is he arguably the biggest pop star in the world, he’s also pals with some of hip-hop’s biggest names (just ask Drake, Ludacris and Kanye West if you don’t believe us), and he chills with some of the prettiest girls in the game thanks to friendships with ladies like Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. (They’re more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!) This really is Justin Bieber’s world, and we’re all just living in it. For a kid from a small town in Canada, Bieber’s meteoric rise to fame from Internet sensation to bona fide musical superstar may have seemed fast, but let’s face it: Bieber is the real deal. 2010 Highlights : Justin Bieber kicked off 2010 with his smash single “Baby.” He also showed his charitable side appearing on BET’s “SOS: Help for Haiti” telethon and lending his voice to the “We Are the World” remake . He was also a presenter at the Grammy Awards alongside Ke$ha. Bieber then went bowling with Drake and Ludacris in his “Baby” video and would later date the clip’s leading lady, Jasmine Villegas . In February, Justin caused hysteria in Paris during a trip to Europe, and then in March, he turned sweet 16, collaborated with Sean Kingston on the track “Eeenie Meenie” and had Aziz Ansari mock him in a Funny or Die clip he thought was “hilarious.” He also released his sophomore album, My World 2.0, which he promised would be “a lot of fun.” Bieber became the subject of his own “Diary” special in late March, released his video for “Never Let You Go” and made an appearance at the Teen Choice Awards. He kicked off April by taking over Funny or Die , where he joked, “I’m a star. I do what stars do. I ride on yachts. I autograph lady lumps.” That same month, Bieber once again showed his funny side on “Saturday Night Live,” where he was the night’s musical guest. He sat down with MTV News and thanked his fans for making him a constant Twitter trend . He shook up New Zealand and Australia, causing more fan hysteria, and by May, his fans were threatening the life of Kim Kardashian just for taking a Twitpic with him! In June, he hooked up with Jaden Smith for the “Karate Kid” track “Never Say Never.” He was nominated for the Teen Choice Awards and hung out with his mentor Usher in the “Somebody to Love” video . That same month, Bieber was a big winner at the Much Music Awards and kicked off his first-ever headlining tour . The second half of 2010 was just as busy for the star. In July, he and Lady Gaga battled it out for YouTube supremacy and announced he’d be on “CSI” and releasing a book . (He followed through on all those promises by year’s end.) By the end of August, Kanye West’s remix of “Runaway Love” hit the world, and it was announced that Bieber would be performing at the VMAs. He also filmed the concert portions of his 3-D movie at Madison Square Garden. JB hit the stage at the VMAs in September and even took home his first-ever Moonman . At the show, he shared with MTV News that “girlfriends are trouble.” He made his cameo on “CSI” and premiered his video for “U Smile,” and then in October, he revealed the name of his 3-D flick — “Never Say Never” — as well as the first trailer for the movie . In November, he released his book and his My Worlds Acoustic album and took home a few American Music Awards . And that brings us to December, when he sat down with Barbara Walters , made Google’s Zeitgeist list and went out for pancakes with Selena Gomez . If doing all that in 12 months isn’t reason enough to make Justin Bieber our #3 Man of the Year, then we’re not sure what can. We’ll be rolling out our Top Five Men and Women of 2010 all week, until we unveil MTV News’ Man and Woman of the Year on Friday. As always, we want to know what you think, so share your picks in the comments below! Related Videos Men And Women Of The Year 2010 Related Photos The Men & Women Of 2010

Michael Jackson Fans Celebrate Michael’s Release With DJ Cassidy

‘It was always my dream to DJ for Michael Jackson,’ Cassidy says at album-release party Monday night. By Steven Roberts Michael Jackson’s Michael Photo: Epic Records NEW YORK — Many a Michael Jackson fan lined up outside of the Roseland Ballroom on Monday night to celebrate the release of the King of Pop’s posthumous Michael album . Dozens of dancers and fans filled the ballroom’s floor, decked out in costumes inspired by MJ’s iconic looks from throughout his esteem career. One of those fans also happened to be the evening’s master of ceremonies, DJ Cassidy. “I’m here to make the fans dance,” he told MTV News. “I think that’s why Michael essentially made the music. He wanted to make people dance. He wanted to make people feel the emotion he felt, and I’m here to do just that. I’m here to help the fans in the celebration of the king.” Dressed in a leather suit with a pink shirt and socks, a red bowtie and shell-top Adidas, Cassidy said that he’s been a fan of Jackson for as long as he can remember. The late singer has been his inspiration in anything artistic in his life, from music to fashion. “So much of my fashion comes from Michael,” Cassidy explained. “So much of how I play music comes from how he formed his songs, how he created his sound that really inspired the way that I DJ. And really, it inspired me to want to be a DJ, to want to make people dance. “So, when I became a DJ at the age of 10, it was always my dream to DJ for Michael Jackson,” he added. “Tonight’s just a small way for me to really celebrate his music.” The party’s guests also included producers Teddy Riley, Eddie Cascio and Neff U, who each had a hand in producing Michael ‘s tracks. But before he began to spin for the night, Cassidy was thinking back to the classics, particularly his favorite party song, 1979’s “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” “You can be anywhere in the world, any city, any small town, any type of crowd, black, white, old, young, poor, rich, at any type of venue,” he said. “They could be wanting to hear house music, hip-hop music, anything in between, but ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ will turn that party out.” What’s your favorite Michael Jackson song? Mariah Carey Performs With Mother On Holiday TV Special

Superstar sang holiday classics and songs from her new Christmas album Merry Christmas II You during concert. By James Dinh Mariah Carey and her mother, Patricia, sing on stage together during ABC’s “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” Photo: ABC It was an evening full of smiles, snow and festive cheer as Mariah Carey treated fans to an early Christmas gift with her own holiday TV special on Monday night. The ABC broadcast, appropriately titled “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You,” featured the pregnant singer spreading merry joy throughout Los Angeles’s Orpheum Theater with yuletide classics, holiday originals and a first-time onstage performance with her mother, Patricia Carey. Decked out in a Santa-esque minidress, Carey kicked the hour-long broadcast off with her high-energy tune “Oh Santa” — the lead single from her second holiday album, Merry Christmas II You — as a pack of kids happily danced around the singer. “They say it’s unrealistic/ But I believe in you Saint Nick/ So grant this wish for me right quick/ Santa won’t you come and make him mine this Christmas night,” Mariah crooned before the sparkling stage setup. Carey also put her own spin on Christmas classics by mashing them together. “Alright, so we’re going to do a new song … actually a very old song,” she told the roaring crowd. “We created a medley of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ for the new album Merry Christmas II You, and we’re going to play that one for you tonight. And here we go. …” During the number, the singer displayed her vocal acrobatics, including her soothing falsetto, with the assistance of a backing choir before kicking off “O Holy Night,” which she described as one of her “favorite Christmas songs of all time.” Soon after, friend and musical collaborator Randy Jackson joined the singer for a hip-hop-flavored rendition of “Here Comes Santa Claus (Housetop Celebration).” The “American Idol” judge appeared excited to take the stage with the singer as he urged the audience to applaud for “the hottest, the dopest, the bestest … Mariah Carey.” Later on, Carey sang another original, “When Christmas Comes,” which she revealed she’d never performed live. The song draws similarities to her inspirational 2002 song “Fly Like a Bird.” Before a clip from the holiday classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” the soon-to-be mother traded the show’s earlier spectacles for a piano and accompanying player for a peaceful rendition of “Christmas Time Is Here” and fan favorite “Joy to the World.” The evening wasn’t just full of jolly anthems though, as the focus turned to Make-a-Wish child Mackenzie, who is in need of a new kidney. Footage of the young girl was shown alongside her adoptive mother, Ronna Williams. After exchanging a few words with her, Carey directed the audience to give a round of applause to Mackenzie and dedicated her “Christmas Time Is in the Air Again” to her. Making the celebration even more memorable was a performance by the singer and her mom, opera singer Patricia Carey, who took the stage together to perform a medley of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hallelujah.” “Please give a big hand to my very special guest. My mother, Patricia Carey, is here tonight,” the songbird said, standing next to her mother. “We’re going to do a song from the new album Merry Christmas II You. This is something that’s very close to both of our hearts.” And if fans ever wondered where Mimi got her vocal talent, it became clear last night. In a singing extravaganza, Patricia took control of the performance as Mariah followed behind with repetition lines until she busted out her signature whistle notes. Carey ended the festivities on a high note (literally), singing her signature holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as an entourage of holiday characters danced around the powerhouse diva. The gang offered her a batch of gifts, but the singer kept in tune with the song’s lyrics by pushing their presents aside. As the song ended, the stage was transformed into a winter wonderland as a flood of snow fell atop the stage ceiling and onto Carey and company. Did you catch Mariah’s TV special? Kim Kardashian Kontinues to Sell Out

It’s official: there’s no item to which Kim Kardashian will refuse to attach her name. You’d think someone who raked in six million dollars this year and who gets paid to simply stand on the red carpets of events would try to be selective in this area. Why not try to serve as some kind of role model, right? Wrong, folks! This is America! It’s Kim’s right to hawk an at-home laser hair treatment product that sells for $495 and guarantees “permanent, professional results.” After all, if you’re gonna be losing weight by following Kim’s advice and sitting on the toilet for days at a time, you probably won’t be able to leave the house.

Rielle Hunter Affair Devastated Elizabeth Edwards

Rielle Hunter . That name alone evoked anger and misery from Elizabeth Edwards until she passed away last week. Surprising? No. But the extent of the toll John Edwards’ affair and illegitimate child took on his ailing wife is being revealed for the first time. Interviewer Daphne Barak has kept this information secret until now, as Elizabeth requested. But now, in the wake of Eiizabeth’s tragic death last week, she reveals specifically what happened when the scorned wife learned of John’s cheating. In March, Rielle Hunter posed half-dressed, with her baby daughter, in GQ, attacking Elizabeth and sending messages that she and John were still an item. After years of being lied to, Elizabeth couldn’t take it anymore. “Elizabeth collapsed and had to be hospitalized immediately after that article was published,” Daphne says, adding that she was asked to keep quiet about it. Elizabeth’s reasons for keeping her collapse from the public were both obvious and more subtle. She wanted to remain a bastion of strength for her children. Also, there was pride and not wanting to show weakness. “This isn’t the only time Rielle Hunter’s presence silently hung in the air,” Barak said. “On March 8 when I picked up the telephone to Elizabeth, I told her that I was at the Regency hotel in New York for dinner. But suddenly the line went off.” “I called again, apologizing for us getting cut off, and repeated that I was at the Regency hotel in New York. Bubbly Elizabeth went all of sudden silent.” “Only minutes later, it hit me – the Regency hotel! For Elizabeth, the Regency Hotel was ‘the crime scene.’ This is where her husband had drinks at the Library (the name of the bar in the Regency) and locked eyes with Rielle Hunter.” John Edwards’ affair had begun. “Then she waited for him outside the hotel at the next light,” she explains of the night Rielle told John he was so hot. “Where everybody’s life changed.”

Snooki Is MTV News’ #4 Woman Of The Year

The ‘Jersey Shore’ star with the towering pouf invaded the pop-culture landscape in 2010, and not even a U.S. senator could resist. By Eric Ditzian Snooki Photo: Chaunce Hayden/Getty Images It’s hard to believe that just a year ago the world was unaware of a pint-size, pouf-haired firecracker named Snooki. What a sad life we all led, in those pre- “Jersey Shore” days, before we learned that beats need beating and tanning is less beauty regimen than a way of life. At the center of it all has been Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi. She’s the loud, kind-hearted and insanely quotable engine driving the reality series toward its status as the most-watched show in MTV’s 27-year history. And in 2010, she was everywhere, from “The Tonight Show” to magazine spreads to “Saturday Night Live” and “South Park” spoofs. Even President Obama dropped her name on TV. But ubiquitous appearances across the entertainment spectrum don’t tell the full story of how thoroughly Snooki has invaded the pop-culture landscape. (They’re more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!) But invade it she has, and for that, we are truly thankful. That’s why we’ve named Snooki MTV News’ #4 Woman of the Year. 2010 Highlights : We’d say the year began on a high note for Snickers, but the ensuing months were no letdown. The show became January’s #1 original cable series among 12- to 34-year-olds and the season-one finale ranked #1 for the day across all television competition in the demo. Before the month was over, MTV had renewed the show for a second season . A day after the renewal news, Snooki landed a spot as the network’s guest correspondent for the Grammy Awards, where she rubbed elbows with industry A-listers and showed that her social skills most definitely extend from the nightclub to the red carpet. “Do you get a lot of, like, girls?” she asked Justin Bieber . Snooki had arrived. Her next stop was Miami Beach. She and her castmates escaped the cold Jersey beaches for the sun-drenched nightlife of Miami, where they began filming the show’s second season . As we discovered when new episodes began airing in July, fame had not changed Miss Polizzi: She was the same tell-it-like-it-is-but-like-no-one-else diva we first met. She loved pickles and dancing, tanning and occasionally fighting. And beneath that artificial tan, she was just an incredibly sweet girl who was snookin’ for love. She also caused something of a political dustup when she spoke out hilariously against Obama’s heath care bill, saying, “[Senator John] McCain would never put a 10 percent tax on tanning, because he’s pale and he would probably want to be tan. Obama doesn’t have that problem, obviously.” In one of the year’s more bizarre moments, McCain took to Twitter … and came to Snooki’s defense. “U r right, I would never tax your tanning bed!” he wrote. “Pres Obama’s tax/spend policy is quite The Situation. But I do rec wearing sunscreen!” Ah, political discourse in 2010! But Snooki isn’t heading to Capitol Hill anytime soon. She’s having too much success doing her “Shore” thing. The season-two debut notched MTV’s best premiere numbers since 2002, building up to a finale watched by 6.1 million viewers. Yet Snooki, it seems, is just getting started. She’s already taped the third season of “Jersey Shore,” which is set to premiere in January. She’s penning her first novel, called “A Shore Thing,” which Simon & Schuster is publishing that same month. And she’ll be ringing in 2011 as part of MTV’s “New Year’s Bash,” during which she’ll actually be stuffed inside a ball that will be lowered in Times Square. As she told her nearly 1 million Twitter followers, “I haven’t rocked the poof in months, it feels. So I’ve decided to bring in 2011 with the biggest poof ever. Who’s with me?” The world, Snooki, the world. We’ll be rolling out our Top Five Men and Women of 2010 all week, until we unveil MTV News’ Man and Woman of the Year on Friday. Vampire Weekend Draw Inspiration From Kate Hudson For New Album

Frontman Ezra Koenig says watching ‘Love Guru,’ ‘Bride Wars’ is helping band ‘think about the art’ they want to make. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend performs during KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas on Sunday Photo: Karl Walter/Getty Images In 2010, Vampire Weekend released a rather amazing album of pan-ethnic pop, debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart , showed up on the “Eclipse” soundtrack , hung out with Lil Jon, the RZA, a very drunk Jake Gyllenhaal and a Jonas Brother and even got sued by the unwitting star of their Contra album cover . Needless to say, it was a pretty hectic year, the kind most bands would follow with a rather lengthy (and well-deserved) break. But, as they told MTV News on Sunday at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas in Los Angeles, Vampire Weekend aren’t most bands: They’re already in the early stages of work on the follow-up to Contra. To be honest, though, they’ve been in those early stages for a while now. “We’re always thinking about the next album. … I would say we’ve been thinking about the next album since before we finished the last one. It’s natural. … I think that’s the way we work,” frontman Ezra Koenig said. “In terms of working on it, have the four of us gotten into the studio and started laying down tracks for it? Not in any formal way, but in some way that’s not even the most important part of the process. So the ball’s already rolling. When and how we start working on it — we definitely need a break — but the talking about ideas, that’s already happened, and there’s definitely stuff floating around.” And just where have VW been gathering inspiration for that “stuff”? Why, from the works of noted auteurs Mike Myers, that dude who plays Dwight on “The Office” and, uh, Kate Hudson, of course. “Collectively, we’ve been watching a lot of big-budget comedies that may or may not have been successful at the box office,” drummer Chris Tomson said with a smile. “Usually not successful,” Koenig added. ” ‘The Love Guru,’ a notorious financial failure, ‘The Rocker,’ [that] didn’t do too well at the box office, ‘Bride Wars,’ that was the exception. … Any time you interact with a piece of art — whether it’s something that goes on to be your favorite or something that maybe you find issue with — still, that’s going to help you think about the art you want to make.” Sounds, uh, interesting. Still, though they’re working on a new album, Koenig cautions that it’s going to be a while before fans actually hear it. After the year they’ve had, VW have sort of earned the right to take their time with things — not to mention the fact that they’re still waiting for “Date Night” to make it to the top of their Netflix queue. “Knowing us, it takes us a very long time to make an album,” Koenig said. “Is it possible that things from the Vampire Weekend family could come out in 2011? I’m sure, but a Vampire Weekend album … I don’t see any reason to rush it.” Related Photos KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas Related Artists Vampire Weekend

‘Tron: Legacy’ Premiere Attended By A-List Stars

Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise and Joe Jonas were among the celebrities who turned up at the Hollywood gala for the sci-fi sequel. By Ryan J. Downey Will Ferrell at the “Tron: Legacy” premiere Photo: John Sciulli/ Getty Images HOLLYWOOD — An entire block of Hollywood Blvd. was virtually transformed into the computer world of grids and gladiators on Saturday at the premiere of “Tron: Legacy.” Blue lights, lasers, smoke machines, white-clad “Sirens,” black-bob-wigged publicists brandishing light discs and at least one light cycle adorned a blue carpet leading to Disney’s El Capitan Theater as hundreds of fans looked on. Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise, Joe Jonas, Ana de la Reguera (“Cowboys and Aliens”), Patrick Fugit (“Almost Famous”), Jena Malone (“Saved!”) and the film’s stars, including Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde and Garret Hedlund, turned up to watch the sequel to “Tron,” the forward-thinking 1982 classic that pit man vs. machine in a virtual reality. With premiere production values that would make an arena rock band blush, the atmosphere was as charged as a “Tron” arena battle. “I don’t want to downplay [the first film’s premiere] because it was what it was then, but this? The excitement level is that much more and I think that’s truly the ‘Tron’ legacy,” said Bruce Boxleitner, who played Alan Bradley and his computerized counterpart, the title character, in both the original and the sequel. “After twenty-something years, I’d go, ‘Well, I don’t know. If they haven’t made [a sequel] by now …’ [And then] we got the word. I was in right from the get-go.” “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski — who will next tackle the re-imagining of another Disney sci-fi property from the ’80s, “The Black Hole” — was brimming with pride now that the long-in-gestation project was finally see the (blue) light of day. “It’s been a three-year process with thousands of talented people all over the world working on this movie with me. I’m really proud of the team and proud of the film. I’m excited for people to finally see it,” he said. Garrett Hedlund plays Sam Flynn, son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) from the first film, who sets out to find his missing father and ends up transported to the world of “Tron.” The 26-year-old actor has been on something of a journey himself: He’s got “Country Strong” debuting this month and just wrapped “On the Road” that morning before hopping on a plane for the “Tron: Legacy” premiere. “It’s a wonderful night, isn’t it?” he beamed, while admitting to being a bit exhausted. Taking in the grand spectacle unfolding on the blue carpet, he added, “I’ve tried to imagine what this night would be like but, up until now, I’ve never been more surprised.” Welsh actor Michael Sheen — whom astute “Twilight” fans still recognize without the getup he wears as Aro — plays Castor in “Tron: Legacy,” and shared Hedlund and Boxleitner’s awe at the “spare no expense” vibe of the premiere and the general marketing rollout behind the picture. “It’s nice to know that Disney has so much confidence in the film and they’re prepared to get behind it so much,” said Sheen. “I’ve seen the film. I can see why they’re so confident. When you’ve got a film like this, I guess that’s the time to bring out your big guns. It’s great. I love the fact that the look of the premiere reflects the look of the film as well, ’cause that’s such a strong part of the ‘Tron’ world. I’m a fan of these films more than I am an actor in them in a way. So it’s just great to be a part of it.” The models dressed as “sirens” who stood on the blue carpet with stoic seriousness — even as Will Ferrell attempted to get one of them to crack a smile — were joined by an actress who portrayed one of the sirens in the film, Beau Garrett. She was accompanied by her parents and two best friends at the premiere. “This is crazy. It’s so fun. It’s really kind of lovely,” laughed Garrett. “[My parents] are like, losing their minds. My dad is beaming right now. So this is a trip! I had no idea what I was getting into.” Daft Punk, whose music lights up the film’s soundtrack, walked the carpet as well while their dance-music contemporary, Boys Noize, served as DJ at the afterparty. “Tron: Legacy” hits theaters nationwide this Friday.
