What Will Kanye West Do At The VMAs?

‘Each piece of the performance tonight is slowly falling into place,’ ‘Ye tweets before Sunday night’s show. By Shaheem Reid Kanye West Photo: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images It’s several hours to showtime, but hundreds of people are already in place and ready to work the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . While many are looking forward to seeing acts such as Eminem, Nicki Minaj and Drake, Kanye West’s history of delivering high-octane, unique VMA sets makes his one of the most highly anticipated appearances of the night Two years ago he closed the VMAs with a tremendous bang (literally, on taiko drums), when he debuted “Love Lockdown.” In 2007, he brought the ultimate party in Las Vegas, as he and everyone lucky enough to be in the room with him donned those unforgettable “Stronger” shades . Of course, there was his thumping collaboration of Gold Digger” with Jamie Foxx in ’05 . And in 2004, he brought out Chaka Khan for his medley of “Through the Wire,” “Jesus Walks” and “All Falls Down.” All of Kanye’s performances share the fact that they had elements of surprise, a bevy of eye candy and a wealth of passion on the mic. His rehearsal for Sunday night’s show was strictly closed-door, so all of us are left wondering: What will ‘Ye bring to this year’s VMAs? Something special, for sure. “Just given the pace that Kanye is running at these days — tweeting, jumping on tables, giving his fans a weekly G.O.O.D Music treat — it’s dizzying,” radio personality and journalist Miss Info said Sunday morning in L.A. “So, I’m hoping that unlike his detached performance of ‘Power’ at the BET Awards , his VMA performance is that interactive, having-fun Kanye that we love. Also, a li’l birdie tells me we’ll be hearing something we’ve never heard before. So I can’t wait. I just want non-apologetic, in-your-face rap!” West tweeted about how exhilarated he felt on Sunday morning. “I wish my mom was here, but I know she’s looking down,” he wrote . “I want to make her so happy today. ” #VMAs tonight!” he wrote in another post. “I still feel the adrenaline… WWMJD!” In one of his earlier posts, he expressed fond memories of the VMAs. “I remember our first Award show and how hard we partied. … We were so happy. “It’s funny. I can’t believe it’s been a whole year,” he added. “But can’t believe all that’s happened within this year at the same time. Each piece of the performance tonight is slowly falling into place… I get so excited to do new things … new energy. I can feel the positive energy … I feel so blessed on this day.” Tune in tonight for the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles! Florence And The Machine Get Revved Up For VMAs At Perez Hilton Bash

VMA-nominated band joined Taio Cruz, Pitbull and N.E.R.D at Perez Hilton’s party on Saturday night. By Jocelyn Vena Florence Welch at Perez Hilton’s Pre-VMA party Photo: Jason LaVeris/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — While the rest of us have to wait until Sunday night to see VMA nominees Florence and the Machine re-create the chaotic beauty of their “Dog Days Are Over” video on the stage, the crowd at Perez Hilton’s One Night in Los Angeles bash at the Wiltern Theater on Saturday night got a special taste of the U.K. group’s spellbinding live set. Leading lady Florence Welch, decked out in a simple lingerie-inspired dress, kicked off the party with her tracks “Drumming Song” and “Kiss With a Fist.” Accompanied by a guitarist and harpist, she played to a packed house, which included celeb guests like “The Hills” star Lo Bosworth. In the short, three-song acoustic set (presumably to conserve energy for the VMAs ), Welch rocked the house with her powerhouse voice. “Thanks again,” she told the crowd before belting out her VMA-nominated track, “Dog Days Are Over.” After Florence left the stage, Perez Hilton came out to thank the crowd for coming. Performances by “Dynamite” singer Taio Cruz and Pitbull followed. Producer Kevin Rudolf, Dr. Hollywood and Skeet Skeet all served time in the DJ booth, and N.E.R.D. closed the night out with a loud, raucous set including fan favorites like “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” Perez later tweeted, “L.A. showed so much love tonight! It was SUCH a special evening! #OneNightInLosAngeles.” Tune in tonight for the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles! Can 30 Seconds To Mars Upset Lady Gaga For Video Of The Year?

Jared Leto recounts creating epic ‘Kings and Queens’ video. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds To Mars Photo: MTV News Like pretty much everything they do, 30 Seconds To Mars’ “Kings and Queens” video was very much a labor of love — and absolute, over-the-top insanity. Filmed over the course of several (very long) nights in greater Los Angeles , in locations that ran the gamut from Jared Leto’s house to the iconic Santa Monica Pier, it features an army of bike-riding extras, a fire-breathing clown, a galloping stallion, a screaming eagle and enough magic-hour footage to give Roger Deakins pause (look it up). Oh, and of course, Leto directed it all, and he and his 30STM-mates do all of their own stunts. Quite simply, it’s the kind of big, ballsy rock video that (sadly) doesn’t get made all that often these days. And, perhaps in recognition of that — and everything that went into its creation — “Kings and Queens” has been nominated for four awards at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , including Best Rock Video and the night’s biggest prize: Video of the Year. Leto was also nominated for Best Direction, and “Kings” picked up a nod for Best Art Direction. It’s an impressive haul — almost more than any artist not named Lady Gaga or Eminem — but Leto and company aren’t letting it go to their heads. Quite the opposite, in fact. “I was completely blown away. It was so unexpected that my first reaction was, ‘Holy f—ing sh–!’ ” Leto told MTV News last month , after learning of 30STM’s nominations. “We had no idea this was the way these things worked. It was the furthest thing from our minds. And then someone sent me the list of artists we’re nominated with, and we couldn’t believe that either. It really is exciting.” In other words, 30 Seconds To Mars still consider themselves to be VMA underdogs — even with their legion of loyal fans (the Echelon) voting early and often to put them over the top. And that scruffy spirit is part of what makes “Kings and Queens” so memorable. It is most definitely a massive thing, but it’s a spiritual endeavor, too: a celebration of a band, their fans and an unyielding sense of purpose. “There’s a sense of community in the song, there’s a feeling of atmosphere and a bit of a dream, as well … there’s something about the song and the intent that matches the visuals as well,” Leto said of the video . “It was exciting to have ownership of these public spaces, to reclaim ownership, and to ride down both sides of the street.” And that sense of self-empowerment is evident in several scenes: the silhouetted image of cyclists climbing a hill unencumbered, the epic “Circle of Death” bike stunt filmed at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue, the blink-and-you-miss-it shot of a man, face covered, tossing a bouquet of flowers (an homage to street artist Banksy). The message, it seems, is clear: There is might in masses, a freedom in unity and strength in conviction. And all it takes to harness any of it is will. So though they may consider themselves the underdogs, there’s a very real possibility that, come Sunday, 30 Seconds to Mars may shock the world and knock off heavyweights like Gaga and Em for Video of the Year. If there is a movement under way, “Kings And Queens” may very well be the visual representation of it. Even if the band does go home empty-handed, Leto probably won’t be all that upset. After all, just getting “Kings and Queens” made was an effort of Herculean proportions. But thanks to all his effort, he now has a lifetime of memories, which is sort of the point of 30 Seconds to Mars’ grand ambitions in the first place. “From the beginning, this was an adventure, because when you hop on a bicycle and ride through the city streets at night, you revert to this nostalgic state,” he said. “You’re flooded with youth and ambition. “So we were really happy to have done this, and to have shared that spirit with everyone who took part,” he continued. “And just the other day, I was driving by Hollywood and Highland, and I had this flashback to when we shut it down and rode down it with a gang of hundreds of people. I’ll never drive down it again without remembering that.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Kim Kardashian Talks Justin Bieber Beef With Chelsea Handler

‘I used to like her,’ reality star teases about VMA host. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rya Backer Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Everyone loves a good catfight, and it seems like one just might happen at Sunday’s Video Music Awards . VMA presenter and reality starlet Kim Kardashian admits that, since host Chelsea Handler called Justin Bieber a “two face” and blamed Kardashian for stealing her man, things have been tense. “Chelsea and I have this, you know, [beef],” she joked at a QVC Fashion’s Night Out event in New York on Friday (September 10). “I used to like her. We’re on the same network, but now it’s just, you know … we can’t really be in the same room together. It gets really bad on the E! studios. They have totally roped off Chelsea on one section, me on the other. You know, it’s, I don’t want to talk about it.” Handler has been quite open about her discomfort with Bieber’s love-’em-and-leave-’em style. “He’s using the flirty card with everybody he meets, and I’m not gonna fall for that,” she said. “I’m 35 years old. I only have about five good years left in me, and I’m not going to waste my time on that guy.” While Kardashian might not be excited to run into Handler on Sunday night, she is looking forward to the possibility of her pal, Bieber, taking home a Moonman for Best New Artist. “That’s amazing! I wish him the best of luck,” she said. “I hope he wins it. I don’t know who he’s up against, but I hope he wins.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Diddy, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige To Hit Fashion’s Night Out

Gwen Stefani, Pharrell and the Olsens will be among the celebs swarming New York on Friday night. By Mawuse Ziegbe Diddy Photo: Statia Photography/ Getty Images A bevy of celebs are stars are slated to light up Fashion’s Night Out in New York City on Friday (September 10). For the second consecutive year, stores around the city will stay open for extended hours offering drinks, DJ sets and discounts to promote the retail industry in an elaborate effort coordinated by the style bigwigs at Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America among other organizations. Retailers are also bringing in big names to hawk their products and dazzle the crowds. Macy’s in Herald Square has arranged an all-star lineup that includes an appearance from Diddy , who will cruise the city in a Fashion Night Out party bus and finish things off with an afterparty at the Fifth Avenue Sean John flagship with DJs Prostyle and Envy in tow. Also slated to hit the department giant are designer Kimora Lee Simmons and Jennifer Lopez , who is promoting her fragrance Love and Glamour. Fashion-forward celebs Mary J. Blige , Nicole Richie and Victoria Beckham will hold court at the tony Fifth Ave. establishment Bergdorf Goodman. Meanwhile, child-stars-turned-fashion-moguls Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen will appear at Barneys New York. Musicians who keep a well-styled foot in the fashion world are also at the helm of several of the night’s festivities. Superproducer Pharrell Williams will be on hand for an event at the downtown outpost of his Billionaire Boys Club’s brand, where a (not-so) surprise show will kick off the event in the early evening. Designer and songstress Gwen Stefani will reportedly show up at a Broadway Sephora location. Other stars lending their celebrity to the evening’s events include “Sin City” star Rosario Dawson, who will host a cocktail party for the Italian luxury brand Bottega Venetta, and tennis champ Serena Williams who will appear at Best Buy. Is Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ Video Of The Year?

Katy Perry To Perform On ‘SNL’ Season Premiere

‘California Gurls’ singer tweets about performing on September 25 episode. By Kara Warner Katy Perry Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage She had two singles battling it out for the summer jam of 2010, tackled hosting duties for the Teen Choice Awards, is vying for two VMAs (her “California Gurls” is up for Best Female Video and Best Pop Video) and now America’s current pop sweetheart Katy Perry can add “SNL” performer to her ever-expanding resume. Perry’s more astute fans might have been able to guess the news before the singer made it official, given Perry’s somewhat cryptic Tweet directed at “SNL” alum and the 36th season premiere host, Amy Poehler: “Dear Amy Poehler can I please be your braced faced neighbor friend that hangs out with you & RICKKKKK!” We assume that comment is referring to Poehler’s “Kaitlin” character — the precocious, excitable and extremely loud 10-year-old who appeared in a series of sketches alongside “Rick!” (played by Horatio Sanz). Shortly thereafter, Perry followed her Poehler-themed Tweet with the official announcement: “OKAY! My BIG surprise is I’m opening the season of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE on Sept 25 W/SNL Alum Amy Poehler!!!” she wrote, followed by a link to her official website with the announcement. MTV News tracked down a representative from “SNL” to confirm Perry’s appearance, though whether the pop star will be included in any of the cast’s sketches remains to be seen. Given Perry’s plucky performance at the — during which she impersonated a series of stereotypical high school characters with her co-hosts (the guys from “Glee”) — she seems a shoe-in for inclusion in at least one of the show’s many vignettes. What do you think of Katy Perry performing on ‘SNL’? Should Poehler and the rest of the cast involve her in some improv? Related Photos The Evolution Of: Katy Perry Related Artists Katy Perry
