Justin Bieber’s Triple-Threat VMA Performance: Making The Show

Best New Artist winner was incredibly hands-on, weighing in on his dancers, drum kit and leather lettermen jackets before the big show. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber rehearses for the 2010 VMAs Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Before Justin Bieber even hit the stage for rehearsal at L.A. Live on the Friday before the VMAs, you could feel the energy in the air. And once the teen pop star actually began rehearsing, it became clear Bieber’s Video Music Awards performance would be influenced by the “A Hard Day’s Night”-inspired VMA promo he shot. Bieber first did a rough run-through of a medley of his hits “U Smile,” “Baby” and “Somebody to Love.” Then he stepped out of a chauffeured red-and-white ’57 Chevy, followed by a gaggle of female fans — an obvious reference to the Beatles. When Justin took to the stage, he wanted to make sure he got everything right: from the way his drum kit sounded to the way his dancers hit their marks to the look of his leather jackets for the show. With the girls surrounding the stage as they watched Bieber rehearse, the driven, hard-working teen proved he would be hands-on and involved in every detail. What was perhaps most surprising was that his outdoor rehearsal went virtually unnoticed by anyone other than those involved with the practice session. While Bieber seemed to be nailing an engaging first VMA performance, Kim Kardashian could be heard teasing about their “romance” in a hilarious voiceover. As the hour-and-a-half-long rehearsal progressed, fans did eventually turn up — one even shouted to Bieber, “Follow me on Twitter!” — but the scene around the barricaded stage area remained relatively chill. Justin made sure to remind fans of one thing: “What’s up, everybody? I love you!” The rehearsal ended with Bieber at the drums, closing out “Somebody to Love,” with black and red confetti falling from the sky. It remained entangled in the trees right through Sunday, when yet more confetti came down on the Best New Artist winner. Lady Gaga’s Eclectic VMA Fashion Choices

From a design by Alexander McQueen to her ensemble made of meat, Gaga didn’t fail to disappoint in the fashion department. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga may have worn more outfits at the 2009 VMAs, but this year she wore a little dress made of meat. So, if the fashionistas of the world were wondering if Gaga could top herself in the fashion department , the answer appears to be yes. For her first outfit of the night, when Gaga hit the VMA white carpet and already won two of her eight VMAs , she was wearing an Alexander McQueen outfit that consisted of taffeta, a feather Mohawk, a Renaissance art design and her famous “Bad Romance” McQueen lobster claw heels. And Gaga thanked McQueen in her acceptance speech for Best Female Video for his fashion contributions to the video. Later on, Gaga donned a very large black dress complete with a cone-bra-like structure and a plastic Mohawk headband. The dress was difficult for her to walk in and required help from several burly men to make her way to the stage to accept her Moonman. She told the crowd, “I didn’t really quite think all the wins through. This outfit is too heavy to walk in.” The dress (and bag and hat) that will certainly have everyone talking is her “meat” dress, which she wore when she won Video of the Year for “Bad Romance.” The dress was an obvious homage to the PETA-criticized bikini Lady Gaga recently wore for Vogue Hommes Japan. Earlier this week, celebrity stylist Robert Verdi predicted that Gaga would be in a fashion category all her own on VMA night, particularly after last year’s costumes. “I think that when you have to compete with yourself, it’s very difficult, and at some point you have to completely evolve and become something other than what people know you to be,” he explained. “But this year, with 13 nominations, I think were gonna find Lady Gaga in competition with herself to come up with a whole array of costumes and changes that continue to reinforce this idea that she’s a force to be reckoned with.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. B.o.B, Hayley Williams Perform Rousing ‘Airplanes’ At VMAs

Bruno Mars also joins pair onstage for a medley of ‘Nothin’ on You,’ ‘Airplanes’ and Paramore’s ‘Only Exception.’ By James Dinh Hayley Williams and B.o.B perform during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic They may have met for the first time on Saturday, but B.o.B and Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams had real chemistry when they performed their hit “Airplanes” at Sunday’s Video Music Awards . Joined by Bruno Mars, B.o.B and Williams performed a medley that also included “Nothin’ on You” and Paramore’s “Only Exception” at the 2010. Beginning with this spring’s anthem “Nothin’ on You,” Mars crooned his way through the track’s chorus until an energetic B.o.B appeared on the other side of the Nokia Theatre stage. “Give it up to my homie, B.o.B,” Mars screamed. After bringing the song to a pause, B.o.B transitioned into his other 2010 smash, “Airplanes.” Decked out in a white ensemble, Williams walked through a misty entrance as she met the MC at center stage. “Can we pretend that airplanes/ In the night sky, are like shooting stars?/ I could really use a wish right now/ Wish right now, wish right now,” she belted. The duo sang smiling and dancing slightly side by side, as a lightning backdrop flickered in the background. With the song coming to an end, Williams walked to the back of the stage as “Only Exception” began to play. Joined by her band, the frontwoman grabbed a mic. As she sang the track, a sea of golden light bulbs were suspended above their heads. During rehearsals for the big performance on Saturday, MTV News asked B.o.B what fans could expect from his and Hayley’s VMA set. “I think just the fact that me and her are performing on the stage at the same [event] is gonna be spectacular,” he told us. B.o.B and Williams were nominated for Best Collaboration Video for “Airplanes,” but lost out to Lady Gaga’s “Telephone,” featuring Beyonc

2010 VMAs: Lady Gaga Scores, Taylor Swift And Kanye West Vent

Performances from Justin Bieber, Eminem/Rihanna and others also steal the show. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage With 13 nominations, there was no way Lady Gaga was going home empty-handed at Sunday night’s (September 12) MTV Video Music Awards . And when the international pop/fashion icon stepped up to accept her sixth award of the night, for Video of the Year, she did what she always does: broke off a piece for her legion of fans by teasing the name of her upcoming album. On a night when Kanye West seemingly came all the way back from music jail with yet another eye-popping performance that put most (or at least some) of last year’s stage-crashing antics to rest, Taylor Swift appeared to answer Kanye’s bum-rush with some lyrical barbs of her own, and everyone from Justin Bieber and B.o.B to Drake and Nicki Minaj made their VMA debuts. In the end, though, the night belonged to Mother Monster. Gaga got the night started early with a pre-show win for Best Dance Video for “Bad Romance” and Best Collaboration for “Telephone” with Beyonc

While the pair weren’t sure how many Moonmen the night would bring them, they were looking forward to chilling with each other and also sharing some plans to collaborate sometime in the future. “This is my big bro Drizzy Drake,” Bieber told MTV News on the VMA red carpet after giving his pal a hug and making his way over to chat with us. “This is my little brother,” Drake added. The two then explained that they were planning to make sure Canada got some proper representation at the show. “Same way we always do,” nominee and performer Drake teased, with fellow nominee and performer Bieber continuing, “You know we always rep our hometown, Toronto.” After the Canadian lovefest, Bieber revealed some details about his third album, a follow-up to his massive hits My World and My World 2.0. “[It’ll] probably [come out] fourth quarter next year,” he revealed. “Drake is gonna be on that album; I’m not sure [who else]. Rihanna’s VMA Appearance Top Twitter Topic

VMAs and Eminem come in second and third with thousands of tweets per minute. By Terri Schwartz Rihanna performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Even though the VMAs were only half over, nothing got Twitter followers more excited than Rihanna’s surprise opening performance with Eminem . Slim Shady launched the show with a performance of “Not Afraid,” before the camera cut to Rihanna standing on the stage singing the opening chords of “Love the Way You Lie.” Fans took to Twitter with their thoughts, and Rihanna and Eminem became two of the most talked-about performers of the night. More than 4,700 tweets per minute were posted after Rihanna’s performance, with the VMAs following her and Eminem being third most popular. “SURPRISE!!!….just had to do it guys,” Rihanna tweeted after the performance, and fans responded in kind. “IM JUST GONNA STAND THERE & WATCH YOU BAHHHHH *YOUR VOICE*” inCBweTRUST tweeted back at her, while Kristiine20 tweeted, “@rihanna you weree awsooomeee!!! OMG i [loved your performance] :).” Some people weren’t as enthused, dissing Rihanna’s hairstyle (urbanstopNIQUE compared it to the Firefox browser logo) as well as continuing the discussion of Rihanna’s abusive relationship with Chris Brown. Eminem was also getting plenty of love, with BieberLine tweeting, “Eminem this is ur time

Justin Bieber Wins Best New Artist VMA

Newbie caps off a big year with a Moonman for smash video ‘Baby.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Justin Bieber at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images This year, a slew of music newbies pumped out catchy hits and worked a signature style, be it side-swept bangs or cartoonish wigs. With so many choices, it’s a good thing we left the business of picking this year’s 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Best New Artist up to the fans at home. And to no one’s surprise, they chose Justin Bieber . The VMA rookie took home the Moonman for the smash clip “Baby.” The video was up against some chart-topping competition, as Jason Der

Selena Gomez, Florence Welch bring goddess glam to the white carpet. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage There weren’t many guys on the MTV Video Music Awards white carpet who deviated from the night’s standard issue of leather jackets and skinny jeans, but the ladies certainly turned it out for MTV’s biggest night. Hey when you know Lady Gaga is going to be at the show, you have to step up your fashion game. Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine channeled a golden goddess in her lace and sequined gown, which added that touch of edge thanks to some corset detailing around her waist. Katy Perry also decided to go with flowery, lace detailing on her nude-colored dress with a white skirt. Selena Gomez just turned 18, and it showed when she stepped on the carpet. Like Welch, she went goddess in her silver strapless gown with blue sequined detailing. The ‘Hills’ girls represented, with Audrina Patridge opting for silver sparkles (lots of them) and Lo Bostworth in a gold-brocade one-sleeve mini dress. Ciara also wore lace and, like Perry, left little to imagination in her barely-there charcoal-colored dress. Ke$ha, meanwhile, flaunted her sky-high legs in her “garbage bag” dress (word is she made it herself), a long braid and super-high heels. Gaga didn’t disappoint, but she also didn’t look as strange as she’s been known to do (like at last year’s VMAs). Her warrior princess, a tribute to late pal Alexander McQueen, involved a feather Mohawk, blue-highlighted hair and a green-, gold- and rust-colored gown with taffeta detailing and printed with a Renaissance painting. If Selena was a Greek goddess, Gaga went to Italy and hung out with DaVinci. Of course, there were the male standouts, namely thanks to America’s favorite Canadian’s Drake and teen sensation Justin Bieber . Bieber hit the carpet in a vest, black T-shirt and skinny jeans and his usual swagger, while Drake ruled in a fitted black suit. The
