Meteor shower August 2010

A meteor streaks past stars in the night sky over Leeberg hill in Grossmugl, some 30 km north of Vienna, August 12, 2010. The Perseid meteor shower is sparked every August when the Earth passes through a stream of space debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. This picture was taken using a long exposure. The Perseid Meteor Shower is expected to be spectacular this year, peaking between midnight and dawn on August 12-13th, but visible now when the sky is clear. In fact, an estimated 1 inch (2.5cm) di

‘Hangover’ Director Todd Phillips Developing John Belushi Biopic

Original ‘Saturday Night Live’ castmember died of a drug overdose in 1982. By Eric Ditzian Todd Phillips Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Filmmaker Todd Phillips has made a career of documenting the modern man-child’s debauchery: Will Ferrell’s beer-bong-sucking nice guy in “Old School,” Owen Wilson’s stoner-cop in “Starsky & Hutch,” and basically the entire cast of the booze-sodden “Hangover.” Now Phillips is planning to document the travails of another debaucherous funnyman. But this time, it’s a true story, and we should expect a dose of tragedy to be mixed in with the drug-addled madness. Phillips and screenwriter Steven Conrad (“The Pursuit of Happyness”) are developing a biopic based on the life of John Belushi, following Warner Bros.’ acquisition of the comedian’s life-story rights from his estate, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Conrad is set to pen the script, with Phillips onboard as a producer but not yet committed to directing the project. Belushi was an original “Saturday Night Live” castmember, after getting his start with the Second City comedy group. He appeared on “SNL” from 1975 until 1979, leaving a year after the success of “Animal House” to pursue a full-time career in Hollywood. He appeared in “The Blues Brothers” in 1980, as well as a few other films. In 1982, at the age of 33, Belushi died of a drug overdose and was found in a hotel room at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. Phillips’ project marks the latest effort to capture Belushi’s life on camera. In 1989, Michael Chiklis starred as Belushi in “Wired,” based on a biography that was widely condemned by the actor’s family and friends when it was released. In a 2002 TV-movie about “SNL” castmate Gilda Radner, Eric Siegel portrayed Belushi. And in a 2005 TV movie about TV show “Mork & Mindy,” Tyler Labine appeared as the comedian. Who might play the role this time around? THR drops names like frequent Phillips’ collaborator Zach Galifianakis, Jack Black, Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen. Who do you think should play the role of John Belushi? Tell us in the comments. For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Lady Gaga Brings Contagious Energy To Staples Center

After a 72-hour bender of recording new songs, Gaga played the favorites at first of two L.A. shows. By Matt Elias Lady Gaga performs at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images LOS ANGELES — Fresh from her headlining gig at Lollapalooza, Lady Gaga rolled her Monster Ball into L.A. on Wednesday night for the first of two shows at the Staples Center. Hours before the concert started, Gaga’s little monsters marauded around the venue, decked out in Gaga gear. The theme for the ball may as well been a “no pants party,” with fans of both sexes parading in fishnets and leotards. It wasn’t just Mother Monster’s kin in attendance — Perez Hilton tweeted that Britney Spears was on hand for the show, though he said she left after a few songs. With the pop princess watching, Gaga took the stage just after 9 p.m. It was everything you would expect from a Gaga production — the sets! the costumes! the lights! — but what can’t be overlooked is the energy. Gaga and her dancers gave it their all for two hours and change. With four major set changes, 19 songs (not including the interstitial tunes) and an arching narrative throughout the show, the Monster Ball seems less of a concert than a Broadway musical at times. The set kicked off with “Dance in the Dark,” “Glitter and Grease” and “Just Dance” (the opening notes of which were played on a keyboard that was hidden under the hood of a broken down car). Gaga’s first wardrobe choice of the night was a pair of oversize purple shades, a giant shoulder-padded purple jacket and a purple leopard-print leotard underneath. After the first few songs, Gaga addressed her adoring crowd. “The Monster Ball is sexual freedom,” she declared. “Tonight in Los Angeles we’ll be super freaks and monsters.” And she continued her conversation with the audience throughout the night. With fans on their feet during a rousing rendition of “LoveGame” (encouraged by Gaga’s “Now dance mother—-ers!), she thanked them for buying tickets and supporting her. “Tonight, I want you to free yourselves, forget your insecurities.” Next up was “Boys Boys Boys,” followed by a brief exit. She returned from beneath the stage on a riser to perform “Money Honey.” She then took time to call a fan in the cheap seats and surprise him with tickets closer to the stage. It was a perfect segue to “Telephone,” which was one of the most elaborate dance routines and biggest sing-alongs of the night. But Gaga had to settle the crowd for at least a few minutes during the night. With her piano rising from the beneath the stage, she launched into “Speechless” — which she dedicated to her dad, who was also in attendance. Next was new tune “You and I,” proving that all the she really needs is her voice and a piano. The new song was a tease of what’s yet to come. Gaga announced that she had been on a 72-hour bender of writing and recording new music. “I want to put it out tomorrow,” she said, “but I can’t!” “So Happy I Could Die,” “Monster” and “Teeth” kept the show moving until the climactic “Alejandro,” “Poker Face” and Paparazzi.” At one point, Gaga emerged in a bra and panty set that sprayed sparks from her unmentionable regions. But the crowd’s biggest eruption occurred during the encore. With the curtain still down, Gaga’s familiar “oh, oh, oh-oh-oooh” broke over the speakers, and fans instantly recognized “Bad Romance.” As fans roared, the curtain lifted to reveal her in a rotating sphere wearing a mirrored angular outfit. It was her 19th song of concert — with almost as many wardrobe changes — and it was finally time for Gaga to call it a night as her monsters exited the ball sweaty and satisfied. Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs Debuts At #1 On Billboard

Indie band tops Eminem and last week’s #1, Avenged Sevenfold. By James Montgomery The Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images It’s been an oddly major year for indie artists. Back in January, Vampire Weekend made history when their Contra album debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. And now, it’s the Arcade Fire ‘s turn to take the top spot … and they did it in an even bigger fashion than anyone could’ve imagined. Their The Suburbs album sold more than 156,000 copies — some 30,000 more than VW managed to move in their first week — to bow at #1 on next week’s Top 200. They’re the highest opening numbers for any indie album since Pearl Jam’s Backspacer (which was released on their own Monkey Wrench label but sold exclusively through mega-retailer Target, indie stores and online) sold 189,000 copies in September 2008, and bested debuts by the likes of the Shins, whose Wincing the Night Away sold 118,000 copies to debut at #2 in January 2007, and Radiohead , who signed to indie ATO Records to release the physical edition of their In Rainbows album in 2008, and sold 122,000 copies to bow at #1. The Suburbs is also the first #1 debut in the 20-year history of venerable Durham, North Carolina, indie Merge Records. They came close in 2007 when the Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible debuted at #2 (behind a Notorious B.I.G. greatest-hits album). It was such a big week for the band that their first album — 2004’s Funeral — reentered the chart at #175, with sales of more than 3,000 copies. Following behind the Arcade Fire is Eminem , who sold more than 152,000 copies of his massive Recovery album to land at #2. Em’s probably not sweating it though … Recovery will pass the 2 million mark in total sales this week. Last week’s chart champs Avenged Sevenfold fall to #3, as their Nightmare album sold more than 45,000 copies. Houston legend Bun B scored the week’s second-highest debut, as his Trill O.G. album sold nearly 41,000 copies to open at #4. Rick Ross ‘s Teflon Don is in at #5, with sales of 39,000 copies. Rounding out the top 10 is Lady Gaga ‘s brand-new Remix album, which sold more than 39,000 to land at #6; Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#7, more than 37,000 copies sold); Drake ‘s Thank Me Later (#8, more than 31,000 copies sold); Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now (#9, nearly 29,000 copies sold); and Buckcherry ‘s new All Night Long (#10, nearly 28,000). Outside the top 10 were debuts by Ryan Star (no, not that one ) at #31, Secondhand Serenade (#42) and Los Lobos (#47). Related Artists Arcade Fire

REVIEW: Peepli Live Promises Modern India, Delivers Muddled Satire

Peepli Live begins with a tight shot of the face of a man running, it would seem, for his life. Natha (Omkar Das Manikpuri), a farmer belonging to the so-called Backward caste, is in fact catnapping in the ramshackle caravan carrying him back to the farm he is about to lose at auction, although his panicked sprint signifies something more than just an unpleasant dream. From the story told by Natha’s startled face, Peepli Live opens out slowly to encompass several factions of Indian society, including the press, local, state, and federal politicians, and the shady elements binding them all together. It’s a meticulously engineered design that a show like The Wire took several years to execute; here the strain shows within the first half hour.

‘Glee’ Star Jane Lynch Set To Host ‘Saturday Night Live’

‘I notified her by accident,’ ‘Glee’ creator Ryan Murphy said of Lynch’s ‘SNL’ hosting gig. By Jocelyn Vena Jane Lynch Photo: Todd Williamson/WireImage Jane Lynch is about to get her funny on when she hosts “Saturday Night Live” next season. “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy confirmed the rumor on Tuesday night in New York City at the “Eat Pray Love” premiere. The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Murphy at the premiere and he confirmed reports that Emmy-nominated Lynch will be onboard to helm an “SNL” episode in October. “I notified her by accident,” Murphy said. ” ‘Saturday Night Live’ called to say, ‘Would you give us Jane for a week in October?’ We just don’t do that, but for Lorne Michaels, I said yes.” Murphy then quickly texted his star to let her know she’d have to spend some time in New York City later this fall. “I said, ‘Lady, you’re doing ‘Saturday Night Live,’ ” Murphy explained. “And she literally wrote back, ‘What are you talking about?’ I think we’re all going to go to see her and support her.” However, a rep for “Saturday Night Live” told MTV News via email that “We haven’t confirmed any hosts or musical guests yet.” Until then, Lynch will be turning the lives of the Gleeks upside down as Sue Sylvester on the new season of “Glee” when it kicks off in September. So, what will her character be up to? Well, even Lynch is in the dark. “I don’t know! I have no idea!” Lynch, who very comically parodied Madonna’s “Vogue” last season , told MTV News last month. “I haven’t even seen a script and I don’t have any idea!” Are you excited that Jane Lynch will be hosting “Saturday Night Live” this fall?
