Jon Bon Jovi: Living on a Prayer, Limping on a Stage

When the union went on strike, did Tommy give up? When tips at the diner were sparse, did Gina throw in her apron? No and no. Therefore, legendary rocker Jon Bon Jovi – inspired by the characters he created for the iconic single “Livin on a Prayer” – continued with his concert in New Jersey over the weekend, despite a serious leg injury sustained during the set. Said a spokesperson afterward: “Jon Bon Jovi sustained a torn calf muscle. [He] made light of the injury and went on to close the show… The band ended the night together, thanking the capacity hometown crowd, and assisting Jon off the stage.” The development won’t stop Bon Jovi from playing every stop of its tour this summer. Big Boi Wanted To ‘Seek And Destroy’ On Sir Lucious Left Foot

‘I’m an MC, first and foremost,’ the Outkast rapper tells MTV News of evolution from 2003’s solo Speakerboxxx. By Jayson Rodriguez Big Boi Photo: MTV News Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is billed as the OutKast rapper’s proper solo debut, but the Atlanta MC actually released a solo collection years ago, if you count his and Andre 3000’s double disc Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. The 2003 project was divided into solo sets from Big and Dre, and both rappers scored number-one hits from their respective albums. Still, while Big had technically recorded that collection on his own, he says his approach to this year’s Sir Lucious Left Foot was distinctly different because instead of releasing an LP that was an extension of the Outkast sound, this time, it was all about showcasing the Atlanta MC’s lyrical ability.

LeBron James’ Move To Miami Heat Prompts Reactions From Hip-Hop Community

Ludacris, Soulja Boy, Diddy, Fabolous and others take to Twitter over King James’ career choice. By Mawuse Ziegbe LeBron James announces he will play for the Miami Heat on Thursday Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images Basketball fans around the country reacted strongly when LeBron James finally dropped the news last night that he was signing with the Miami Heat after frenzied speculation about the NBA MVP’s next move. Hip-hop’s basketball fans took to Twitter in droves to vent, lament and crack jokes about King James’ decision. Teflon Don Rick Ross tweeted “Miami the spotlight of the world!!!!!” which was later re-tweeted by fellow Miami MC Trina. “Pretty Boy Swag” rapper Soulja Boy Tell’em offered a simple Twitter message about the ‘Bron hubbub, tweeting “Lebron James Swag.” Even glitzy ’90s rapper MC Hammer enthusiastically chimed in with “LeBron signs with the HEAT !!!!” Diddy , like many New Yorkers, had been hoping James would come to Gotham and wrote on his Twitter page, “Lebron will sign with the knicks! Yea I said it!” But an hour later, the party-startin’ mogul seemed at peace with ‘Bron’s finale choice and tweeted, “ok i can handle Miami!!! its my second home!!!! lets go!!!!!!” Queens MC Q-Tip approved of James’ choice and typed on Friday (July 9), “I think @kingjames made the right decision.” Rumors had been swirling that James would possibly go to a Chicago, New York or New Jersey team, so not everyone was geeked about ‘Bron heading down south. “Miami???!!!! nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” ?uestlove of the Roots said in an impassioned tweet. Some MCs offered their sympathies to fans of James’ former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. D.C. MC Wale , who called the MVP’s choice earlier in the night, tweeting, “Miami…I bet,” followed up his prediction an hour later with a comforting note for Cleveland: “Seriously feel bad for cavs fans.” Ludacris offered something a little stronger for Cavs fans , tweeting, “Conjure [cognac] is on deck in Cleveland just in case anybody feel like gettin f—ed up tonight.” Others typed their thoughts about how James’ move would affect the Heat. Dallas rapper Dorrough tweeted , “LeBron James and DeWayne Wade is Like Jordan and Kobe on the same team. I dont think its gon work.” ATL songstress Ciara tweeted “Looks [like] Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets next year!” likely referencing a possible showdown between Miami and Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony. As fans eagerly anticipated James’ announcement last night, one artist took the opportunity to mine some humor out of the situation. Brooklyn MC Fabolous , who is known for his punchy one-liners, started the trending topic #JustOfferedLebron, which resulted in tweets like, “The Nets #JustOfferedLebron a Best of Both Worlds 3 album wit JayZ if he signs,” and “BP #JustOfferedLebron free gas for life if he continues to take all the attention off the oil spill.” Related Photos LeBron James’ New Neighbors In Miami LeBron James’ Big Night

Paul McCartney Joins Ringo Starr At Radio City Birthday Concert

Duo fittingly sang the Beatles’ ‘Birthday,’ following an all-star rendition of ‘With a Little Help From My Friends.’ By James Montgomery Ringo Starr performs while celebrating his 70th birthday Wednesday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images In honor of his 70th birthday, Ringo Starr threw himself a party on Wednesday at New York City’s iconic Radio City Music Hall … with a little help from all his famous friends. It was, more correctly, a concert, one that saw Starr (backed by the latest incarnation of his All Starr Band) tear through more than two hours of Beatles tunes, covers, and even a solo hit or two, and, at the very end of the night, nearly bring the house down when he was joined onstage by his fellow former Beatle, Paul McCartney . Somewhat fittingly, the two remaining members of the Fab Four took on the White Album cut “Birthday,” with McCartney singing lead and Starr on drums (just like the good old days), as the sold-out Radio City crowd justifiably went nuts. And at the song’s conclusion, with the late John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono looking on from the side of the stage, McCartney and Starr embraced and walked off the stage to a standing ovation. It was the first time the duo shared the stage since another Radio City gig, a benefit show headlined by McCartney in 2009 . The Macca/Starr duet occurred just moments after an entire army of Starr’s famous friends — including Ono, Joe Walsh, Steve Van Zandt, Angus Young and Max Weinberg — joined him for another rather appropriate song, “With a Little Help From My Friends.” It was, in theory, the de facto finale, until McCartney sprinted onstage, much to the delight of everyone in the house. What can we say? When Ringo Starr throws a party, he really throws a party. Related Artists Ringo Starr Paul McCartney The Beatles

Lady Gaga’s Monsters Beat The Heat For ‘Dream Come True’ MSG Show

‘Everything was about New York today,’ one fan notes after Gaga’s headlining debut at Madison Square Garden. By MTV News Staff Lady Gaga performs at Madison Square Garden in NYC on June 6 Photo: Derek Storm/ Splash News When Lady Gaga took to the stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, the singer said she was thankful for the chance to headline for the first time at the storied midtown venue. Her little monsters were equally thankful for the chance to see Gaga make the momentous career step in her hometown. “It’s 110 degrees in New York City right now, and I’m from Montana — it is savagely hot here and I’m dying in the heat, but it was definitely worth it,” Beau told MTV News as she left MSG. “She started crying in the beginning, and she was like, ‘This is my teenage dream come true, and it was just really sweet.’ ” Ben added that while it was sweltering outside, “Lady Gaga’s concert was definitely hotter than it is out here!” New York native Alex loved the show’s theme. “Everything was about New York today. Shocking moment of the night was when she [lay down] up on the piano and started playing the piano with her boot.” Frankie said he was spellbound by some of Gaga’s infamous theatrics. “It was a nice moment to see she got very emotional,” he said. “It was almost like she climbed up on the piano and on the screen they focused on her shoe, and then she started slamming her shoe on her piano, and it looked like she was going crazy on the piano for theatrics, and then she actually started playing. It was really, really cool!” Other little monsters left the show taking Gaga’s message to heart: If you dream big, sometimes your dreams do come true. “She mentioned that when she was our age, she was back in the last row, which is where we were trying to get past security and get closer to the front, and we did it,” Maggie admitted. “We dodged security, and basically, she gave us the inspiration that one day we can be up there, or our dreams can come true also. So, it was really inspirational.” Have you been to a Lady Gaga show? Share your favorite moments in the comments. Lady Gaga Plays Triumphant Homecoming Show At Madison Square Garden

‘Without New York, I would not exist,’ Gaga tells NYC fans Tuesday night. By Maura Johnston Lady Gaga performs in concert (file) Photo: Getty Images Before her hometown headlining debut at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night (July 6), Lady Gaga tweeted a photo of herself standing in front of the New York arena’s marquee. The photo had no commentary except for the tag “#madisonsquaregaga,” and indeed, it seemed like she was on the verge of taking over the arena in the hours before she took the stage. Some fans were dressed as characters from her videos — the Diet Coke curlers from the “Telephone” clip were particularly popular — while others took her glammed-up aesthetic to the hilt, with glitter, elaborate eye makeup and giant hair bows ruling the night. The fashion statements were all the more impressive given the weather in New York, where temperatures soared past the 100-degree mark on Tuesday. Gaga’s Tuesday night concert was the first of three Monster Ball shows taking place this week in New York, which serves as the setting for the elaborately staged concert. During the course of her show, Gaga and her dancers veered all over the city, from the Lower East Side to the F train to Central Park. But it was obvious that Gaga was very aware that the fantasy world she’d created had been set up inside the arena where, as the young Stefani Germanotta, she took in quite a few performances by music’s biggest stars. “My name is Lady Gaga and I used to sit right over there, way far in the back and way up top,” she said at one point during the evening. She then reeled off a list of artists she’d seen during her past visits to the Garden — Madonna, Cher, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Kiss. “I used to stare at this side of the room, and I used to think, ‘I’m gonna be up there,’ ” she continued. “Every second you watch me on this stage,” she told the crowd, “you remember, I was sitting where you are.” Later in the show, she dedicated a wrenching performance of “Speechless” to her father, who was in the audience. She recalled the days of him helping her carry a piano down four flights of stairs so she could bring it to shows in the early part of her career and said, while pitched over the piano, “Of all the drunk men in my life, Dad, you’re my favorite.” “Without New York, I would not exist,” Gaga then declared. “But I also would not exist without my friends,” she added, and after a lengthy rundown of the challenges she’d faced with the help of her pals she dedicated her new song “You and I” to them. Her performance of the rock-tinged track was full of passion, stretching into a near-epic where she pounded away on the piano. The obvious nods to New York sprinkled into the evening — both within the show and timed to tonight’s setting — only seemed to energize the crowd, and Gaga fed off the adulation. By the time the night came to a close, there was a triumphant feeling in the air. “We did it, little monsters,” she told the crowd after the night’s closing number, “Bad Romance.” “We made it to the Monster Ball! We made it to Madison Square Garden. “Thank you for making my dream come true,” she continued. “I love you so much.” What do you think of the Monster Ball Tour? Leave your reactions in the comments!
