Nine Inch Nails frontman will collaborate on soundtrack to David Fincher’s ‘The Social Network.’ By Gil Kaufman Trent Reznor Photo: Sean Gardner/ Getty Images Although he claimed he was putting Nine Inch Nails in the deep-freeze , frontman Trent Reznor is not fading into the distance. The leader of the legendary industrial powerhouse has recorded the soundtrack to the upcoming David Fincher (“Fight Club”) movie “The Social Network,” which tells the story of how Facebook was created. “I was planning on taking some time off after the continual waves of touring that ended last fall and spend this year experimenting around with what would become How To Destroy Angels and some new NIN,” Reznor wrote on the Nine Inch Nails website , referring to HTDA, the band he started with his wife, Mariqueen Maandig. “Well, that plan didn’t work out so well. David Fincher started inquiring about my interest in scoring his upcoming film, ‘The Social Network.’ Yeah, the movie about the founding of Facebook. I’ve always loved David’s work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story.” Then Reznor, who has had an up-and-down/love-hate relationship with social networking sites, said he read the script for the movie. “When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned,” he explained. “Atticus Ross and I have been on a creative roll, so I asked him if he wanted to work on this with me and we signed on,” Reznor said of composer/producer Ross, a frequent NIN collaborator. “Months later, I’m happy to tell you we’re nearing the completion of this and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out. The level of excellence that David operates on is inspiring and the entire process has been challenging and truly enjoyable.” He project, or two, in time for the film’s October 1 opening. Reznor said he expects the album to be available several weeks before the movie’s release, which, he noted, is “really f—ing good. And dark!” While Reznor has contributed songs to soundtracks before, including David Lynch’s “Lost Highway,” this is the first time he’s committed to recording an entire soundtrack. “The Social Network” tracks the rise of Facebook, from its inception in 2004 on the Harvard University campus, and stars Jessie Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake and Rashida Jones. Are you excited to be getting Nine Inch Nails music in the form of Reznor’s upcoming soundtrack? And when you think of Facebook, do you think NIN? Tell us what you think in the comments! ‘The Last Airbender’ Stars Talk Bending Powers

Jackson Rathbone would choose to control water, while Dev Patel would turn back time. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicola Peltz Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images M. Night Shyamalan’s kid-friendly fantasy, “The Last Airbender,” details an epic war between four nations driven by the powerful natural elements water, fire, earth and air. The flick follows the plight of Aang, the sole Avatar with the ability to control all of the elements, as he tries to restore peace between the warring factions. Given the choice to manage any one of those elements, the stars of the film have a variety of reasons for choosing their own “bending” powers. Shyamalan, who wrote, directed and produced the movie, which is based on the hit animated Nickelodeon TV show, would opt to have the ability to manipulate air. “First of all, I have an advantage ’cause everything has air around it,” Shyamalan told MTV News at the New York premiere of the movie on Wednesday. “Right now, if you were Earthbender, you’d be kind of screwed because there’s concrete underneath us. But I got you.” Nicola Peltz, who plays a Waterbender in the film, said she would stick to that power in real life as well. “I think water’s the most interesting because unfortunately it can harm you like a tsunami but it also heals people,” the actress said, adding that she’d like to be a ‘bender that’s also a do-gooder. “I would like to be a Waterbender because I could stop the tsunami and also give clean water to countries.” Jackson Rathbone was also on the water bandwagon. “I would probably say water just based on the fact that it’s one of the most prevalent elements around,” said Rathbone. “Bruce Lee talks much about being like water in his book Artist of Life. ” Noah Ringer works all the elements as the film’s lead, Aang, but he was able to single out one that he’d most like to control. “Air would be pretty cool because you could fly,” said Ringer, adding that Airbending has some practical advantages as well. “You wouldn’t have to ride on airplanes or anything.” Seychelle Gabriel, who plays Princess Yue in the film, would keep things close to home. “I’ve been telling everyone earth because I just think there’s so many possibilities because there’s rocks and trees and dirt and gravel,” said Gabriel. “There’s so many choices to pick from.” Dev Patel, however, eschewed the whole four-elements thing altogether and offered his own special ability. “If it was a real element it would … be turning back time. There’s so many crazy catastrophes happening in the world today. To be able to do that would just be fantastic,” said Patel, who nodded and simply said “BP,” as one of the disasters he’d like to fix. These unexpected developments made for an interesting episode of The City as our girls wrestled with increasingly high stakes in their career pursuits. Max B Recalls Making A Wave Called Yes Tape While On Trial

‘For the music to come out that good while I was in trial, that was surprising to me,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Max B Photo: Amalgam Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : A Wave Called Yes Headliners : Max B and Young Riot Key Cameos : “Living the Life” (featuring Curren$y) Essential Info : Max B said his wave just doesn’t dry up. While the New York MC awaits his appeal of a decades-long prison sentence for manslaughter and various other charges, his music is still being heard. Amalgam Digital recently released a mixtape by the spitter and the upstart Young Riot. “That’s me and my young god, Young Riot,” Max said on the phone from the New Jersey State Penitentiary. “He’s holding it down while I’m up in the spot. We got a few treats on there. I remember the night we did them. [The executives at Amalgam] drove me out to Boston, 2 in the morning. I went out there and drank a 60 of Hennessey and knocked out the whole tape. Knocked the tape out in one night. That’s what professionals do. This is when I was going to trial. They came and got me on a Friday or Saturday, I had to be back on Sunday, Monday morning to go back to court. It was a real busy week. I was really busy on trial. For the music to come out that good while I was on trial, that was surprising to me. That just let me know, no matter how long I’m gone from the game, I’m still a natural. I still can make quality work. I’mma still be Biggavelli.” Amalgam is going to let A Wave Called Yes rock for the summer then drop Max’s solo LP, Vigilante Season. B recently won a court case to be freed from his contract with Jim Jones, who discovered him. “We recorded 40 songs in three weeks,” Max said of his dealings with Amalgam last year. At the time, he was still contractually bound to Jones and did not know if the music would be allowed to be released. “Nonstop in the summertime. Vigilante was real special to me. It was like they giving me a shot. Even if it wasn’t coming out, they gave me the feel of just going to do the album. I was doing it my way.” As for when Max will be free to record again, he says it’s in God’s hands now. The rapper’s appeal could take between 18 months and three years to be resolved. If he loses that appeal, it could be an additional three years before he can appeal again. Max was sentenced to 75 years in prison in September 2009 for conspiracy, robbery, manslaughter and a myriad of other crimes. The jurors in the case felt there was ample evidence to convict him of the 2005 robbery of two men in a Fort Lee, New Jersey, hotel room. One of the men was shot and killed. Max wasn’t at the scene of the crime, but the prosecutors built their case with him as the mastermind. Max still denies being involved. His stepbrother Kelvin Leerdam was also convicted in the matter, and Max’s former girlfriend Gina Conway was involved as well but eventually testified against the men. Leerdam is serving time along with Max. “I always kinda had that problem with finding the right people,” Max said of the choices that led him to prison, right as he appeared to be on the verge of mainstream recognition. “People always say you gotta surround yourself with people who have your best interests in mind. I always found that hard to do, because when you’re in my situation, everybody acts like they got your best interests, but they don’t. We know who got your best interests — your mother, your father, your kid’s mother, whatever. Your immediate family. But you can’t have them on the road with you every day. You gotta be around your n—as. “You gotta pick them carefully,” he added. “I always had a problem with picking the right people I surround myself with. That’s always been my downfall, ever since I was a little kid. That’s something I gotta learn off experience. This is definitely an experience. The toughest sh– I been through in my life. You already know when I beat this, it’s gonna be beautiful. I just can’t wait. That’s the only thing keeping me going. Me saying [to myself], ‘Max, when you beat this, it’s gonna be a whole new lane out there for you.’ Me being able to attack this sh– right and make a living for my mother and my kids and be a good productive [citizen] in society. I’m a G. My moms raised me as a G. The only reason you don’t hear me stressing out, I know I’m coming home and I know I’m coming home soon.” Other Heat This Week

Spotted: Matt Kemp and Rihanna!

Matt Kemp can’t buy a hit to save his life these days, batting just .182 with 21 strikeouts in his last 14 games and even riding the pine the last two nights. Fortunately, the L.A. Dodgers outfielder is still a hit with Rihanna. The singer and the slugger stepped out to West Hollywood’s Mastro’s steakhouse on Saturday after his team’s win against the visiting New York Yankees. Keeping a tight grip on her man, who returned the favor, the red-headed singer is enjoying downtime with Matt, who she began dating over New Year’s . Unfortunately, she resumes her “Last Girl on Earth” tour in July, but Matt Kemp and Rihanna seem to be making the distance thing work for now at least. Rihanna may be a world-famous singer, but on this night, she was just Matt Kemp’s girlfriend. Not a bad catch … for either party. [Photos: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com]

U.S. Limiting Corporate Nuclear Liability

Even as President Obama is insisting that BP pay for all the damage caused by its oil spill, his administration is leaning on the Indian government to render its citizens unable to claim damages from U.S. power-plant suppliers in the event of a nuclear accident. Before U.S. companies enter India's burgeoning nuclear-power market, the U.S. government is pushing for legislation limiting their liability. “The passing of the bill by Indian parliament would mean a win-win situation for both the countries, generating employment as well as giving India abundant clean energy,” U.S. Ambassador Timothy J. Roemer said. Clean is a curious word to use in this context, given that the bill is necessitated by the potentially catastrophic filthiness of nuclear power. The bill in question would indemnify foreign suppliers and make India's domestic operators responsible for the costs of nuclear disasters — though only up to a point. Domestic operators' liabilities are to be capped at about $110 million, after which the Indian government would be responsible. If damages exceed $460 million, the victims would be on their own. The Chernobyl disaster is estimated to have cost more than $250 billion. In the event of such a catastrophe, India's liability bill would put almost the entire burden on victims and taxpayers, giving suppliers and operators less incentive to ensure safety. To be sure, indemnifying suppliers and capping the liability of operators are the international norms, or else few companies would be in the nuclear business. The Price-Anderson Act, which regulates liability for nuclear accidents in the United States, also channels costs to operators and caps them at $11 billion (to be shared by the industry as a whole). That is a considerable sum, though it's arguably inadequate in light of the staggering potential costs of a nuclear calamity. Nevertheless, the law allows victims to sue for additional damages. Indians, by contrast, stand to lose this right under the proposed nuclear-liability law. Arguments over India's nuclear bill have been particularly passionate because of memories of the night in December 1984 when clouds of poison gas escaped from a Union Carbide pesticide factory in Bhopal, in central India. At least 15,000 people have died as a result, and more than 100,000 have suffered permanent impairment. At the time, the Indian government estimated damages at $3.3 billion, and today, given extensive long-term effects that no one foresaw, they would be reckoned as far greater. But Union Carbide paid a settlement of only $470 million. Circumstantial evidence suggests the Reagan administration prevailed upon Indian leaders to go easy on Union Carbide.
