‘Eclipse’ PG-13 Rating Promises ‘Intense Action,’ ‘Some Sensuality’

Reasons given for rating indicate more action and violence than ‘New Moon’ and ‘Twilight’ movies. By Eric Ditzian Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit In an unsurprising development that nonetheless provides titillating insight into what’s to come, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” received a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America’s Classification and Ratings Administration, according to a report from BoxOfficeMojo.com . Both “Twilight” and “New Moon” were rated PG-13 as well, but it is the explanation behind their ratings that gives subtle hints as to what “Eclipse” has in store when it hits theaters on June 30. “Eclipse” received a PG-13 rating for “intense sequences of action and violence, and some sensuality.” By contrast, “Twilight” was tagged PG-13 because of “some violence and a scene of sensuality” and “New Moon” nabbed its rating due to “some violence and action.” Was “Twilight” notably more sensual than “New Moon”? According to some folks, so it seems. And what’s the exact distinction between “some sensuality” and “a scene of sensuality”? Does that mean “Eclipse” will have two or more such scenes? That sound you hear? The Twilight-verse uttering a collective, anticipatory shudder. “Eclipse,” no doubt, will feature its Edward-Bella-Jacob love triangle front and center, as the first trailer for the film made clear in March: lovers in a flower-covered meadow, Taylor Lautner with his shirt off and so on. But you can also expect a heavy dose of action — “intense sequences of action and violence,” to be exact — as evidenced by the flick’s second trailer : fights, fights and more fights. What else would you expect from director David Slade, who also helmed the vampire horror movie “30 Days of Night”? So that makes it three straight PG-13 movies, and when it comes to the adaptation of “Breaking Dawn,” the final book in the vampire book series, you can expect more of the same. That is, despite a hefty dose of vampire-on-teenager sex and the horror movie-esque birth of a vampire/human baby, “Breaking Dawn” is planned as a PG-13 release. “That’s your audience,” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg said last month. “In this series, you don’t sacrifice anything. There are some movies that wouldn’t play at PG-13, like ‘The Hangover,’ but this is just not one of them for me. Again, if you’re capturing character, emotion and emotional journey, you’re OK.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Thank God for the judges saving me. I got to spend more time here, be with the people … it’s all good, man.” Next week, the Top 3 finalists will compete head-to-head on the second-to-last performance show of the season, airing Tuesday, May 18 (8:00-9:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on Fox. These two would fight for the crown that is to be won on 26th May 2010 in the grand finale episode of the show. ‘American Idol’ Report Card: Who Was A Star On Movie Night?

Crystal earns an Excellent grade for her ‘Caddyshack’ cover; Big Mike’s ‘Free Willy’ fails. By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: FOX The numbers in our “American Idol” classroom are dwindling, and that’s forcing producers to get creative. Thus Tuesday night’s Songs of Cinema theme introduced a dose of group work into the live show, as the top four contestants sang a couple of duets in addition to their familiar individual efforts. The ensembles proved to be the night’s saving grace. Before we dole out the grades, we’ve got an extra credit question for the “Idol” conspiracy theorists among you: What was the thinking behind pairing Crystal Bowersox with Lee Dewyze and Michael Lynche with Casey James? Hmmmm. And how about a bonus extra-credit question: What does it mean that for three out of the four contestants, their duets were far superior to their solo performances? In any event, “American Idol” is a competition for individuals, and the singers must be graded on this basic fact: How did each one fair? That’s exactly what we plan do as we push forward with another edition of our “American Idol” report card. (And don’t miss Jim Cantiello’s recap of their performances in the MTV Newsroom.) Excellent Crystal Bowersox : Her blown-glass mic stand was back, and so was MamaSox! After two straight weeks of adequate, if not revelatory, performances, the 24-year-old stormed back with a truly unlikely performance. A song from freakin’ “Caddyshack” ? Really? And yet, the country-rock makeover she gave Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Alright” simply worked. By now we hardly have to mention that her vocals were on point; they’re always on point. And then her duet with Dewyze (“Falling Slowly” from “Once”) showed off such easy chemistry, such likability, we’d say she might just have locked up the competition. But we already knew that, right? Good Casey James : Casey probably should have known better, picking “Mrs. Robinson” after his entire story arc this season has boiled down to a cougar-rific connection to Kara DioGuardi. Wise or not, the song — with its mandolin-driven bluegrass feel — was a pleasing choice that stayed well within James’ vocal abilities. Was it a bit lazy, as Simon Cowell suggested? Perhaps. But we’d take a few more weeks of “Mrs. Robinson”-esque ditties rather than James back in his bar-band rocker mode. Meanwhile, his duet with Big Mike of Bryan Adams’ “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?” was an even stronger performance. It’s going to be very interesting to see what happens between these two singers come elimination time. Satisfactory Lee Dewyze : We’ve known for a long time now that Dewyze suffers from persistent pitch problems. Have those deficiencies ever been on display as glaringly as they were during Seal’s “Kiss From a Rose”? As the judges pointed out, that tune is a crazily difficult one to pull off, and Dewyze simply wasn’t up to the challenge. He did little to change up the tune, and while we wouldn’t go so far as to label the performance “karaoke” — as Cowell did — we will say that it was a colossal disappointment from a singer who’s supposed to be giving Bowersox a run for the “Idol” crown. Luckily for him, he was paired with MamaSox for his duet, and he rode her dreadlocks to the highest praise of the evening. Unsatisfactory Michael Lynche : Big Mike gives us our toughest call of the night. Was he merely OK during Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There,” or truly subpar? We enjoyed the gospel choir backing him up, but there’s no getting away from the roller-coaster path of his vocals from beginning to end. But in the end, Big Mike ends up at the bottom of our grading curve for making the worst song choice of the evening. Even Ellen DeGeneres couldn’t help but mock the selection, calling “Free Willy” “one of the classic, great movies of all time.” If you believe that one, you might also believe that Big Mike has a shot at winning “Idol” season nine. Lee Dewyze’s Friends Pack Hometown Bar For ‘Idol’ Performance Night

Friends, family and fans sport their ‘Lee-shirts’ as they cheer on the former paint salesman. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Gil Kaufman/ MTV News ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Illinois — More than two hours before “American Idol” aired on Tuesday , the party room at the Fox and Hound Smokehouse restaurant was already filling up, as superfans angled to get a table close to one of the five big-screen TVs that would soon be beaming in images of hometown hero, Lee Dewyze. One long table was crowded with joyful moms hawking Dewyze T-shirts and red foam fingers that read “Dewyze Choice – Believe,” which, like the shirts, had a smiling picture of Lee in place of the “L.” “When you see [Lee] live, whether it’s at a karaoke bar or in the corner of a bar downtown, he’s just got this thing about him, he just lights up the whole room,” said Brian Friedopfer, 27, about the unique allure of his friend Dewyze, who would start fighting for a spot in the top three just moments later. “We’ve literally gone to places where we don’t know anybody, and the second he touches a microphone, everybody is just silent and watching him.” Though Dewyze is the dude in the bunch who has made it big, Friedopfer had his own moment in the sun when he went out to visit his pal during Elvis week: Host Ryan Seacrest picked Friedopfer out of the crowd and slow-danced with him in the middle of Tim Urban’s performance. “Whether he wins or not, I don’t think it matters. I think the kid’s got it made for the rest of his life,” said Brian, who is confident his pal is going to win it all. “If he got voted off tomorrow, God forbid, I think he’d get signed the next day.” As showtime approached, “Idol” recordings of Lee singing “The Boxer” and “Treat Her Like a Lady” blasted over the sound system, and families rushed to wolf down their nachos and buffalo wings. Nearly 200 friends, fans and family packed the room, taking turns at the complimentary pasta buffet and shouting their support any time Lee was mentioned or shown on the screens. So many supporters showed up to the strip-mall sports bar that has become ground zero for performance night gatherings that the manager — who once hired Lee to play the main room — had to open a second room in the back for the spill-over crowd. That back room is where a handful of Dewyze’s best friends, including Friedopfer, were huddled, readying their phones for frantic dialing that would start right after the show and continue into the night as they moved on to Potato Creek Johnnys, a neighborhood karaoke bar wherethey often wore out the Kings of Leon and Lynyrd Skynyrd selections with Dewyze. Both rooms were vocal when the judges had less than kind words about Dewyze’s performance, raining down lusty boos when Randy Jackson said his “Kiss From a Rose” was unoriginal and even louder hisses when Simon Cowell compared it to karaoke. “I don’t agree with any of those judges,” said Mike Corsi, another one of Lee’s longtime friends, who met the singer in detention nine years ago, when the pair were in high school. “He is by far the best out there. It’s gonna come down to him and Crystal, but I honestly do believe that he’s gonna win it.” In fact, Corsi said he told Dewyze back in January that he had a feeling his detention mate would go all the way. Earlier in the day, at Mt. Prospect Paint, where Dewyze worked for six years before his run on “Idol” — right up until he left for Hollywood — manager Bill Lagattolla was doing a brisk business in Lee-shirts. Just hours before Tuesday night’s performance show there was a nonstop parade of locals coming in to buy their Lee spiritwear. They hoped to wear it all during Friday’s top-three homecoming parade and rally at a local horse track that one of Lee’s good friends and former teacher, Amy Silverman, was frantically planning. Chanelle Dahn, 20, stopped in to pick up one of the neon-green “Vote 4 Lee” shirts that were piled by the hundreds in the front of the store. “I went to school with Lee, and he used to come to our house and play guitar with my brother,” she said. “It’s so funny to see someone you went to school with on TV!” Proceeds from the sales of the shirts and hats, which Lagattolla said have been in the hundreds, if not thousands, will go to fund the music department at Dewyze’s former school, Mt. Prospect High. Even as Lagattolla tried to help customers looking for the right shade of paint for a basement renovation, the phone continued to ring off the hook with calls about Dewyze, which Bill said sometimes number 300-400 a day. “I love it. I’m so proud of him and so happy to see everybody coming out here and supporting him,” said Sarah Dewyze-Salas, 26, Lee’s older sister, who attended Tuesday night’s party with their cousin, Kelly Badgley, 27. Wearing their Lee-shirts, they beamed as the huge crowd began filing out after the show. “I thought he did awesome. I think he did great, and I think he’ll keep on going,” Dewyze-Salas said, adding that her brother’s duet with rival Crystal Bowersox on the “Once” ballad “Falling Slowly” was her favorite performance of the season. “He always said that music was his life and that this was his dream, so I knew something would come of that,” said Dewyze-Salas of her pride in how far her brother has come on “Idol.” How did you think Lee Dewyze did on Tuesday night? Do you think he has a chance to win? Share your comments below. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘Iron Man 2’ Blasts Away Box-Office Competition

Sequel surpasses first ‘Iron Man’ debut, but fails to beat ‘The Dark Knight’ for best opening weekend. By Josh Wigler Robert Downey Jr. in “Iron Man 2” Photo: Paramount #1 “Iron Man 2” ($133.6 million) #2 “A Nightmare on Elm Street” ($9.2 million) #3 “Date Night” ($6.8 million) #4 “How to Train Your Dragon” ($5.3 million) #5 “The Back-Up Plan” ($4.3 million) With repulsor rays armed to their fullest capacity, “Iron Man 2” burst off the ground and onto the big screen this weekend with all of the action and adventure a moviegoer would expect from Marvel Studios’ premier franchise. The result was an extraordinary $133.6 million weekend, Paramount Pictures’ single best debut of all time, as well as the fifth-best opening weekend in Hollywood history. “Iron Man 2” began the weekend with an impressive $7.5 million start from 2,500 midnight showings on Thursday, expanding into a record-breaking 4,380 screens on Friday morning. But the records ended there, as “Iron Man 2” was unable to dethrone “The Dark Knight” ($158 million) for the best opening weekend of all time. Still, the Robert Downey Jr.-starring sequel was able to outperform its own predecessor, which earned $98.6 million during its first weekend in theaters in 2008. In addition to its performance at the domestic box office, “Iron Man 2” earned a solid $57.2 million overseas from more than 10,000 theaters, bringing the film’s foreign intake to $194 million and its global total to $327.6 million. Given its reported $200 million production budget, “Iron Man 2” didn’t need to break any records this weekend in order to solidify its status as a highly lucrative endeavor for Marvel Studios. A success in and of itself, “Iron Man 2” also represents a comeback of sorts for comic book films in general, as recent efforts “Kick-Ass” and “The Losers” failed to light up the box office as many had expected. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” fell from first to second place this weekend with $9.2 million, a miniscule result compared to the might of “Iron Man 2.” “Date Night,” “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Back-Up Plan” rounded out the top five. Upcoming Releases Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe return to medieval times with “Robin Hood” next weekend, while Summit Entertainment writes “Letters to Juliet” and Queen Latifah performs “Just Wright.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Iron Man 2.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
