Joss Stone And Jeff Beck Get Steamy On ‘Idol Gives Back’

British duo put a bluesy twist on ‘I Put a Spell on You’ for the fundraising effort. By James Montgomery Joss Stone (file) Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Wednesday night’s (April 21) “Idol Gives Back” event featured performances by everyone from the Black Eyed Peas to Annie Lennox, but it was a pair of Brits — and a swampy, often-overlooked American tune that pre-dates most rock and roll — that ended up being one of the night’s most memorable moments. Singer Joss Stone and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck turned in a simmering, smoky take on Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ 1956 stomper “I Put a Spell on You” — a song that has been covered by a lengthy list of artists, including Nina Simone and Shane McGowan — which managed to take the soulful, primal urges of the original (and most of the covers) and infuse them with both blues and R&B. Backed by the Jubilation Choir, and aided by a four-piece band, Stone and Beck let the song build to a boil, with the 23-year-old Stone starting out sparse, then gradually adding more gravel and gut to her voice, while Beck added flecks of bluesy guitar that eventually erupted into a fret-bending, note-melding solo. The tune grew and grew, with Stone — dressed in a silver, floor-length gown — vamping across the stage, bending low to draw the notes out of her lungs, while the choir added ominous backup, and Beck, the old pro playing it cool, guiding the song with his reserved, almost flirtatious playing. Eventually, when things got too hot, Beck, the band and the choir all fell away, leaving only Stone to take the song home. And with one great, breathy bellow, she did just that, going low once again, letting the grit come to the forefront. And as she wailed, Beck brought the band back in to wrap it all up. And as the audience cheered, the duo embraced in the middle of the stage. What did you think of Joss and Jeff’s duet? Let us know in the comments below! Drake Keeps Lil Wayne’s Name Alive At BMI Unsigned Urban Showcase

Birdman, Lloyd, Big Boi, Sean Garrett, DJ Drama and others take the stage at 13th annual Atlanta show. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake performs at BMI’s 13th Annual Unsigned Urban Showcase on Tuesday Photo: Jayson Rodriguez/ MTV News ATLANTA — Drake’s a man of his word. On his latest single, “Over,” the young spitter promises that “the Young Money ship is never sinking.” And with Lil Wayne away, the So Far Gone lyricist has continued to soldier on for the camp as evident on his Away From Home tour . On Tuesday night, Drake headlined BMI’s 13th Annual Unsigned Urban Showcase and gave a shout to his incarcerated YM boss, along with fellow jailed MCs Lil Boosie and Gucci Mane. “Free Tunechi and Boosie and free Gucci,” Drake rapped during a freestyle, before telling the crowd that “they make some great music.” The event, held at the Havana Club, was hosted by crooner Lloyd and featured opening act Travis Porter and OutKast’s Big Boi, who was honored with the Legends of ATL Award. Lloyd pulled double duty during the festivities, joining Drake and his band onstage for a series of R&B-tinged hits, like “Successful” and “A Night Off.” Drake then picked things up with rowdier fare like “Uptown” and “Over.” “I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year, who the f— are y’all?” he sang on the hook. Those in attendance for the packed performance included Jermaine Dupri, songwriter Sean Garrett, producer Jazze Pha, Bobby V., and DJ Drama, who co-hosted the proceedings. Drake later pulled Birdman onstage with him for their collaboration “Money to Blow.” The Cash Money boss and Drizzy did their best to keep Wayne’s name active while the rapper completes his jail sentence. “When I say ‘free,’ you say ‘Weezy,’ ” Drake directed the crowd. “I’m gonna do everything I told him I would do, what I said in the song: keep us afloat till he gets back,” Drake told MTV News last month, shortly after Lil Wayne turned himself in to police. “You won’t even notice he’s gone. Promise.” Have you seen Drake on tour? Share your own concert reviews in the comments! Related Artists Drake Lil Wayne

YSP! WSD! Drummer Devon Clifford Dies At 30

exclaim Drummer of You Say Party! We Say Die! (YSP! WSD!) Devon Clifford, 30, has died from a brain hemorrhage according to the late’s father Ron Clifford. The band was playing a show on at Rickshaw Theater in Vancouver Friday night when the drummer suddenly collapsed. Devon Clifford was immediately sent to a hospital.  Singer Becky Ninkovic held Clifford’s head as paramedics attended to him. He later lapsed into a coma and died in a Vancouver hospital. The dance-punk band released their third full-length album, “XXXX,” in September and was due to embark on a European tour later this month. Devon’s passion was drumming.  ”He was meant to drum. It was in his nature,” he said. “He had a hell of a ride for a long time.” Clifford said his son had a headache on the night he died. “The band thought he was leaning down to pick up one of his sticks, but he was falling over,” he said. Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze Dominate American Idol

And then there were two. Yes, we know there are actually seven finalists remaining on American Idol – but can anyone envision a scenario in which Crystal Bowersox or Lee DeWyze does NOT take home the title? We certainly hope not, as this pair is clearly the cream of the season nine crop. Each proved why during last night’s edition of the show, based around inspirational singles, putting on performances that brought many in the audience to tears. We’ve ranked the top seven in order below. Just imagine a large space between number-two and all the others… Bowersox : Who needs a guitar?!? With a perfect rendition of “People Get Ready,” and with her father in the crowd, Crystal herself couldn’t stop from crying. But here’s encouraging news for the singer: she’s the one to beat. DeWyze : He took on “The Boxer,” a Paul Simon classic. It was a tender performance, one that lived up to the expectations of such a well-known, respected song. Awesome job. Casey James : Taken on its own, a solid take on “Don’t Stop.” But this singer sounds the same each week. Nothing stands out at this point, which might actually put Casey in danger of elimination this week. Siobhan Magnus : She took heat for her ballad of “When You Believe.” But who would you rank above her? Still has a great voice and great potential. Aaron Kelly : It’s difficult to get past the cheesy single he chose (“I Believe I Can Fly”), or even the shady persona of the dude who originally sang it (R. Kelly). But this Kelly connected with the audience in an impressive manner. Tim Urban : We’ve seen better recent performances from this cutie than his cover of “Better Days.” His time might finally be up. Michael Lynche : Another cheesy ballad, as Big Mike took a big chance with “Hero.” His voice just couldn’t carry such a tough song choice. Who was your favorite performer of the night?

B.o.B Tops iTunes Singles Chart, MGMT Rule Album List

Ke$ha, Coheed and Cambria and more knock last week’s champ Jack Johnson out of the top 10. By Gil Kaufman B.o.B Photo: Frank Mullen The critical response to MGMT ‘s sophomore album Congratulations has been mixed so far , but their fans had no qualms downloading the psychedelic warriors’ album from iTunes. According to figures provided by iTunes, the trippy disc shot right to #1 on the iTunes albums chart this week, bumping mellow strummer Jack Johnson out of the #1 position . (In fact, after one week at the top, Johnson was out of the top 10 entirely for the sales week that ended Monday). MGMT were followed by Ke$ha’s Animal, which likely stormed back up thanks to her appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” and Coheed And Cambria’s Year of the Black Rainbow, which we like to think was goosed by their win in the MTV Musical March Madness competition. Holding steady at #4 were multiple Academy of Country Music Award-winners Lady Antebellum with Need You Now, followed by Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond, Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0, the self-titled debut from former “American Idol” finalist Jason Castro, the latest “Glee” cast recording, Glee — The Music, the Power of Madonna, former 10,000 Maniacs singer Natalie Merchant’s Leave Your Sleep and Lady Gaga’s The Fame. (Precise sales figures are not available because iTunes does not provide sales data for the iTunes store.) Spiked from the top 10 was former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash’s self-titled debut, which was #2 last week, and albums by the John Butler Trio, Sigur R
