Jay McGuiness tells MTV News the clip is ‘about the party that keeps on going.’ By Jocelyn Vena The Wanted on the set of “Chasing the Sun” Photo: MTV News The Wanted just wrapped up production on the video for their new single, “Chasing the Sun.” And if you thought listening to the track was a big party, the guys are making sure to extend that invitation to the music video. When MTV News caught up with the fivesome on the L.A. set for the clip, they teased just what their fans can expect. “Our song ‘Chasing the Sun’ is basically about the party that keeps on going,” Jay McGuiness said, with pal Max George giving a bit more insight into how that will manifest in the Director X-directed clip: “There’s certain shots which we’ve just done now which are on a rooftop, and then we’re filming all night until 6 in the morning, and then the last shot, I think, will be us just kind of walking away looking rather disheveled,” George explained of the video, which should drop in the very near future. With the amount of success the Wanted have already had with their single “Glad You Came” here in the U.S., the guys are hoping they can dominate the airwaves with this new equally dance floor-ready track. “You always want to do better than your last song, and we’ve always set a really high standard with ‘Glad You Came’ already,” McGuiness explained. “But I think we know now from the singles we’ve got in our pocket, there’s no way we’re going anywhere. We’re here to stay, and our songs are going to get better and better. I’m just bragging right now so hard.” “Chasing” is the second single off their self-titled U.S. debut , hitting the streets next week. The guys said the song is definitely an extension of where they are going next. “I think the songs suggest about our musical growth. We’re always willing to change it up,” Tom Parker shared. ” ‘Glad You Came’ set the precedent for America, but we’ve got big songs like ‘Warzone’ in the U.K., which is going to be on the EP, and that’s a ballad with dubstep — something that a boy band has never done before. And we took a bit of a risk. I think everyone loved it, so we like to take risks with our music.” Are you looking forward to the “Chasing the Sun” video? Tell us in the comments!
We slide down music’s next great slippery slope in Bigger Than The Sound. By James Montgomery Tupac’s hologram at the 2012 Coachella music festival Photo: Getty Images On Sunday, Tupac Shakur thrilled audiences at Coachella , which was rather notable, considering he’s been dead since 1996. Of course, it wasn’t actually Tupac who shared the stage with Dre and Snoop, but rather a hologram, one that cost nearly a half-million dollars to make and probably would’ve blown the collective minds of 100,000 stoned white kids (“BRO, I JUST SAW TUPAC’S GHOST”) had reports of its Coachella premiere not leaked early. And while it wasn’t the first time this level of trickery has been employed live — Madonna used the same technology at the 2005 Grammys when she performed the Gorillaz, as have well-moneyed folks like Celine Dion and the Black Eyed Peas (not surprisingly, a holographic pop star has also been selling out venues in Japan since 2010) — Holo-pac represents something else … something a tad more unsettling. Because, to the best of my knowledge, this was the first time anyone decided it would be a good idea to resurrect a long-dead music icon for the sole purpose of a performance. I’m willing to bet it won’t be the last. Whether or not that’s a good thing is largely up to you. Part s
Jon Gosselin has fallen behind on his child support payments to his ex-wife Kate Gosselin again, according to a tabloid report, to the tune of $3,557.06. That’s far less than the amount Levi Johnston is accused of owing for just one child, but it’s enough to mean legal consequences for Jon just the same. The former Jon & Kate Plus 8 reality star has eight kids he is required to support by law , and the Pennsylvania Dept. of Child Welfare is calling him out. Kate Gosselin seemed blindsided by the fact that Jon was going to go back to court for non-payment of child support after a Twitter follower alerted her. “I don’t know if he’s going to court but wouldn’t surprise me…. How do you know this stuff?!?” she wrote but quickly stopped engaging the follower: “Woah….I’m not allowed to talk about orders from the court.…” Probably smart. Since TLC canned their show , Kate has been working as a blogger for CouponCabin (dot) com while Jon has been working construction. Their contentious relationship often involves slamming each other on Twitter, but if Jon really does owe back child support, a real battle could erupt.
Frances Bean Cobain has lashed out at her mother Courtney Love for claiming on Twitter than her late husband’s bandmate Dave Grohl hit on her . Love claimed Grohl “hit on” Frances and is “obsessed” with the teenage daughter of Kurt Cobain, and that “she was curious” about him as well. Frances wasted no time in pointedly slamming the rumor and her mom. “While I’m generally silent on the affairs of my biological mother, her recent tirade has taken a gross turn,” says Frances. “I have never been approached by Dave Grohl in more than a platonic way. I’m in a monogamous relationship and very happy.” Frances adds: “Twitter should ban my mother.” Grohl, the Nirvana drummer turned Foo Fighters frontman, also ripped Love, who claimed he was “sexually obsessed” with Frances and/or Kurt. “Unfortunately Courtney is on another hateful Twitter rant,” Grohl, the married father of two daughters, says through his rep in response. “These new accusations are upsetting, offensive and absolutely untrue.” For her part, Frances Bean Cobain, 19, is happy at least, getting engaged to Isaiah Silva , frontman of the rock band the Rambles, last fall. Courtney Love fired off a Twitter missive in which she accuses former Nirvana member Dave Grohl of hitting on her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. Grohl angrily denied the allegation. “Unfortunately Courtney is on another hateful Twitter rant,” he said via his publicist. “These new accusations are upsetting, offensive and absolutely untrue.” What the Foo Fighters frontman is referring to is a series of tweets the 47-year-old Love, the late Kurt Cobain’s widow, lobbed last night online. SIDE NOTE: Hilariously, her allegations against @davegrohl actually went to a German IT student by that name … it’s not the rocker’s account. Anyway, Love Tweeted the following: “I hear from frannies roommate that @davegrohl hit on frances, and that she was curious, I’m not mad at her, him I am about to shoot, dead.” Courtney admitted the whole thing may have been gossip she heard from a driver, but still laid into the musician because she totally believes it: “The driver from the cm who drove @davegrohl my daughter was telling me what st. on laurel canyon and that he had his hands all over her.” “it could be a riumnour [sic] the actual sex, and it’s not beans fault she’s not slutty in any way, at all, HES OBSESSED.” she added. Courtney went on to suggest that Grohl was “sexually obsessed with” Kurt as well and that he “had that Romney rape thing about him.” Don’t ask us what the hell that even means. For what it’s worth, Love is a certified crazy person. Frances Bean Cobain herself believes as much, as evidenced by their volatile history. [Photos: WENN.com]

With their label facing a $1 million lawsuit by a U.S. group with same name, MTV’s Twitter followers suggest new names for U.K. boy band. By Gil Kaufman One Direction Photo: Courtesy of Columbia Records What’s in a name? Apparently a lot, since British boy band sensation One Direction’s label is facing a $1 million lawsuit and request for an injunction from using the name by an American lad group with the same name. While most people have never heard of the five-piece One Direction from the U.S., they got together before the reality TV-spawned U.K. version and are claiming that their more popular Brit doppelgangers are destroying the goodwill they’ve built up on these shores. Though One Direction U.K.’s spokespeople have not commented on the suit and a representative for the band’s U.S. label offered a no comment at press time, we set up the hashtag #New1DName to ask MTV News’ Twitter followers to pre-emptively offer up some alternate names the lads should consider as they wait of the lawyers to hash things out. Among the names suggested: The Driven (@tasharea101), The Charming 5 (@officialjai), Chillin’ Boys (@finindah), All4You (@AttilaSn), Making Moves (@AttilaSn), SMilesHi (@AttilaSn), TurnItUp (@AtillaSn), We Want Justin Bieber Money (@maguiiMARS), 5HotGuys (@ShimmerJBieber), Parabola (@Teepoper), 5 Boys 12 Nipples (@Alison_H), Only cute Boys (@maguiiMARS), New Reflection (@SteffanniHannah), Naughty Boys (@OlaKozlowska), Drunked Boys (@OlaKozlowska), Plebzone (@markfinlayson), Sex Gods (@PhoebeOulton), The Wee Diddys (@markfinlayson), Ham Wednesday (@kdaniellee), 5B (for 5 Boys) (@officialjai), Fall Sky (@tasharea101) and the very clever JABB (Just Another Boy Band) (@DebdoodleDeb). A number of you found some interesting variations on the directional theme: Wun Dierecshin (@SaifQuadri), Direction One (@karennfaith8), FU1 Direction (@SheriMeibach), New Direction (@clermont703), One Direction. (@ManuelaMonster), One Inspiration (@tasharea101), Wrong Direction (@bbeanss_), No Direction (@hooLingrit) Other Direction (@bbeanss_), The Band Formerly Known As One Direction (@SheriMeibach), The Directionz (@vennee), 5 Directions (@SwaggerKidNate), OneDestination (@Phoebe_Cassell) and our staff favorite, Juan Direction (@nicolebritttany). And then there were the ones who clearly have a fixation on particular members: Liam and the Forks (@ClaraGelcer), Liam Against the Spoons (@ClaraGelcer), Niall and the Potatoes (@ShimmerJBieber), Zayn and the 4 Others (@JeremyCabalona), Zaynito and the Burritos (@Emily1D_xo), Louis and the Ostriches (@xsarahmusgrave) and Louis and the Carrots (@ClaraGelcer). If 1D do end up changing their name it wouldn’t be the first time a band has had to do so because of a previously existing entity. Late ’90s Irish boy band Westlife were originally known as Westside, but had to give up that name, and another British act, The Verve, had to add a “the” to their name to avoid a conflict with the famous Verve jazz label. David Bowie was born David Jones, but decided to invent a stage name to avoid confusion with late Monkees’ star Davy Jones and electronica duo the Chemical Brothers started out as the Dust Brothers, but switched things up after a lawsuit from the same-named production pair best known for helping to piece together the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique . The Charlatans had to add a “UK” to their name to avoid a lawsuit from a defunct American band from the 1960s and Blink-182 decided to tack on some numbers to settle a dispute with the Irish band Blink. Some bands have different names depending on where they are touring, such as Jack White’s side group the Raconteurs, who are known as the Saboteurs in Australia for legal reasons. For similar reasons, reunited Brit poppers Suede have to tour as the London Suede in the U.S. (see also Wham UK and The English Beat). Sometimes, though, bands have enough cash to buy the name they really want, such as grunge gods Nirvana, who settled out of court with a London group from the 1960s for around $160,000. If One Direction have to change their name, what do you think it should be? Hit us at hashtag #New1DName to offer up your suggestions. An inevitable consequence of the ugly Kim Novak/ Artist soundtrack-rape saga had to be that other artists and actors would use the analogy to describe how, unauthorized, new legacies are built or enhanced using elements of their older ones. Right on cue, enter Courtney Love: “Courtney Love believes Kermit the Frog and his gang of Muppet friends ‘raped’ the memory of her ex-husband Kurt Cobain — by bastardizing Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ in their 2011 movie … without her permission. But there’s another side to this … We’re told Courtney sold off half of her rights to Kurt’s music to a company called Primary Wave Music. And there’s more … Courtney also gave Primary Wave the exclusive right to distribute Nirvana’s entire catalog.” Mm-hmm . Anyway, isn’t this stuff supposed to be limited to awards season? Better luck next year, Courtney. [ TMZ ]
In a battle of Lindsey Pavao vs. Lee Koch, both did justice to Nirvana on The Voice. Lee channeled his inner Paul McDonald as well as Kurt Cobain on “Heart Shaped Box”, and Lindsey showcased her impressive range throughout the performance. There wasn’t a lot of singing together, making it easier for both to shine and also hard to determine who shone brightest, since both were so exceptional this week. In the toughest call of the night, Lee got the nod. Agree? Disagree? Lindsey Pavao and Lee Koch – Heart-Shaped Box (The Voice Battle Round)
Butch Vig tells MTV News he’s ‘really proud’ of Wasting Light, up for Album of the Year at Sunday’s Grammys. By James Montgomery Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Nate Mendel Photo: Peter Wafzig/ Getty Images Over the past two decades, Butch Vig has produced albums like Nevermind, Siamese Dream and 21st Century Breakdown (to name just a few), and yet he’s never helmed a project quite like the Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light. Recorded — and mastered — entirely on tape, in Dave Grohl’s garage, it was a deliberately anachronistic disc that not only helped rejuvenate the Foos themselves, but was the kind of Herculean undertaking Vig won’t forget anytime soon. And, in recognition of that undertaking — and the rave reviews Wasting Light has earned since being released last year — the Foos head into Sunday’s 54th Grammy Awards with six nominations, including a nod for the night’s biggest prize: Album of the Year. And in the lead-up to the show, Vig (whose work on the disc earned him a Producer of the Year nom) took time to look back on the making of Light, both the good — and the bad. “I’m really proud of it. Even though it was in the garage and it was a lot of hard work doing it to tape, we had so much fun recording with Dave and the Foos. It’s one of the most fun albums I’ve worked on in my whole career,” he told MTV News. “There was something about making it, where every day was by the seat of your pants, but between the vibe of the band and the songs, God, we laughed a lot. Dave is one of the hardest-working men I know, but he loves to f— around. He’d be playing some guitar part and his daughter would walk in and he’d start making goofy faces, and we’re all on the floor. And he’s still playing the part f—ing perfect. He definitely embraced it. To be honest, I didn’t want it to end.” Of course, that doesn’t mean there weren’t a few setbacks along the way. Basically everything about Wasting Light created challenges at one point or another — including Grohl’s “no computers or else” edict. “I’ve recorded hundreds of records on tape, but I haven’t for over 10 years, so when Dave told me he wanted to do it that way, I looked him in the eye and said, ‘OK, we can do this,’ but I thinking, ‘Oh sh–, oh sh–‘ the whole time,” Vig laughed. “And I started talking to our engineer, and he was like, ‘OK, we’ll record on tape, and then we’ll finish everything in ProTools.’ And then Dave said, ‘There are no computers in the studio. If I see a computer, I’m going to firebomb it and throw it out the window.’ “So, we knew it was going to be tape the entire process, and it was kind of crazy. Just the nature of that process forces you to completely rethink how you’re going to do everything,” he continued. “And the band has to be great, because you can’t fix anything. I’ve had a couple of younger bands come up to me and say, ‘Hey, Butch, do you think you want to do [another album on] tape?’ And my answer is always the same: ‘Only if you can play as good as the Foo Fighters.’ ” And though he finished work on the disc more than a year ago, Vig said he still can’t help listening to Light (“My daughter is always playing it around the house, and my wife has it in her car constantly, so I’m still being inundated by it,” he laughed), which is rare for him. Then again, there are few albums he’s as proud of as this one, and not just because it scored a boatload of Grammy noms. It’s the memories he has from making the record that will stay with him forever — most notably, the making of standout track “I Should Have Known,” which brought him, Grohl and former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic back together for the first time in nearly 20 years. “To me, that song is definitely the darkest moment on the album, but I kind of find it exhilarating when I listen to it. I remember Dave was sitting a foot away from me when he sang it, and the whole vocal take [on the album] is the first performance he did,” Vig said. “And I just remember the hair on the back of my neck going up, going, ‘This is happening right now, he means all these words, they’re about people he’s known that he’s lost.’ … And I still feel that way when I hear it now. “And, of course, after Krist finished his bass overdub, we sat and talked for about three or four hours. Dave and I split a bottle of wine; I think Krist drank about a half a bottle of whiskey. And it was great, because we were talking about when we were recording Nevermind, ” he continued. “Not so much the actual song recording, but, like, driving over the hill to go see the Butthole Surfers, and Krist was driving after he’d had about a half a bottle of whiskey, and I’m going, ‘Dude, pull over, I gotta drive!’ and then Kurt seeing Rick Rubin at the Buttholes show and running up to him and pretending to shag his leg. It was a great experience having them both in the room, one I’ll never forget.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions!
