M.I.A. Super Bowl Middle Finger Joins Long List Of Celebrity Flip-Offs

Lady Gaga, Eminem, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry have also given the one-finger salute. By Gil Kaufman M.I.A. performs during the Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show on Sunday Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The big hype (around these parts, anyway) going into the Super Bowl on Sunday was what Madonna would do during her halftime performance . But, as you surely know by now, one of her guests, rapper/singer M.I.A., stole some of Madge’s thunder by unexpectedly flipping the bird at the end of “Give Me All Your Luvin’.” While your granny was probably shocked and your little brother/sister got a naughty giggle out of it, M.I.A. wasn’t exactly reinventing the rebel wheel with her one-finger salute. Everyone from punk icon Iggy Pop to Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain, late Wu-Tang Clan rapper ODB, Kid Rock and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong have made flipping people off a standard part of their eff-the-man personas over the years. In fact, tossing up the middle-digit salute is a time-honored tradition for musicians that dates back more than 40 years to the original rock rebel. Johnny Cash : In one of the most iconic pictures in music, the Man in Black famously gave an impassioned finger to the camera in 1969 during his San Quentin prison performance. It was later used in an ad in 1998 Billboard magazine to express his “thank you” to the Nashville country music industry after he won a Grammy for Best Country Album as a response to their abandonment of him in his later years. Tupac : The late rap icon was fond of laying down both single and double birds in some of the most iconic pictures of him over the years, including one taken of him on a gurney after he’d just been shot at a New York recording studio in 1994. Eminem : After being called out for some of his gay-bashing lyrics, Slim Shady made a huge statement by appearing with openly gay Elton John at the 2001 Grammys , where he hugged the piano-pounding icon and then gave the audience a view of both his middle digits. Lady Gaga : Mother Monster can’t go anywhere these days without being hounded by the paparazzi. So, when Gaga attended a Mets game in 2010, she let the paps know how she felt when they caught her chilling in a private suite. Justin Bieber : He may be a (young) man of faith, but even the Biebs has his limits. Last March, while out celebrating his 17th birthday , the “Baby” singer was accosted by photos, so he showed them his tall man … and then apologized later, saying, “I know better than to react in anger.” Katy Perry : We can’t remember where this awesome GIF came from, but last year, the good girl gone (sometimes) bad made flying the finger flag seem almost cute. Cobra Starship : Hell, CB are so enamored of the eff-you salute that they wrote a whole song about it and invited Mac Miller along to help them spread the word, one digit at a time. Sleigh Bells’ ‘Comeback Kid’ Video Is Candy-Colored Chaos

First clip from band’s Reign of Terror album grabs, throttles and leaves you begging for more. By James Montgomery Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss in their “Comeback Kid” video Photo: Mom & Pop So there’s not exactly a ton of wanton violence or bizarre high school fetishism in Sleigh Bells ‘ brand-new “Comeback Kid” video (though the threat of both certainly exists throughout), but as the dynamic duo prepare to release the follow-up to their breakout Treats album — appropriately titled Reign of Terror — you can take solace in the fact that they’re not straying too far from what got them to this point. In a sense, “Comeback Kid” only expands on both the Bells’ signature sound (Alexis Krauss’ saccharine coos coupled with Derrick Miller’s shifty shredding, with trilling, thrilling electronic ephemera tossed in for good measure) and their look. They’re both rocking Ray-Bans and Krauss’ bangs are as blocky as ever (though, as the video reveals, she may have gone blond). They effortlessly pair letterman jackets and Nirvana T-shirts with DayGlo Daisy Dukes and studded leather jackets. The video recalls ’80s teen romp comedies, all proof that, like its music, the band has not met an era it couldn’t incorporate … with maximum impact, of course. So, while there are a grand total of zero explosions in the “Comeback” video (unlike “Infinity Guitars”), and while neither member of the band shoves the other out of a speeding car (that would be the basic plot behind “Rill Rill”), the new video is a logical successor to both those clips. It’s a whirling collection of eye-catching, seemingly disparate imagery — Krauss jumping on a bed while cradling a rifle, dreamy beachscapes, suburban skateboarding, a winking dog, grocery store high jinks — that all builds to a candy-colored climax. Like they proved with the (thoroughly awesome) teaser trailer for Terror, Sleigh Bells definitely know how to make a music video, and “Comeback Kid” is just the latest example. It doesn’t have to make a whole lot of sense — or, really, any sense — to grab you, throttle you, and leave you begging for more. What did you think of the “Comeback Kid” video? ‘I’m bringing it back with a new sound,’ Detail tells Mixtape Daily of finding inspiration in the past. By Rob Markman Detail Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Detail Though he is currently sitting atop the rap game, Lil Wayne transcends hip-hop. He flirted with rock early on, picking up the guitar for his “Leather So Soft” video with Birdman and again in his 2008 clip for “Lollipop.” But it was his 2010 rock-inspired Rebirth album that really stretched the boundaries. In October, on the set of Birdman’s “Y.U. Mad” video , Young Money president Mack Maine told MTV News of Wayne’s plans for a second rock LP. During the same sit-down, “How to Love” producer Detail spoke about his inspiration for crafting the tracks for Tunechi’s Rebirth II. “I’ve been listening to Nirvana, I’ve been listening to Pink Floyd,” he told Mixtape Daily. “The zone I’ve been goin’ in on this sh–, I’m bringing it back, back, back, back with a new sound.” Detail, who recently produced Bow Wow’s “Sweat,” is clearly not against finding inspiration in the past. Addressing any skeptics, the Detroit hitmaker promises that he will add his own unique twist. “We all get everything from the past musically, everything has been done already, so for me it’s just taking those elements that I could ride in my car and enjoy and bring it back to something new,” he said. According to Mack, Weezy is not only working on Rebirth II but is actually at least 12 songs into his upcoming I Am Not a Human Being II as well. For the YM prez it is Wayne’s ability to cross genres that makes him such a draw. “He captures all those different audiences, and then at a concert or a show, you bring all those different people together,” Mack explained. “You bring your Rebirth rock people, you bring your Carter people and you bring your I Am Not a Human Being [crowd], and you have a great show. That’s why we sell out arenas every night.” There is currently no release date for either LP, and when MTV News asked Wayne, he downplayed both albums. ” I Am Not a Human Being II and Rebirth II are so not important right now,” Tune said. “We got Twist coming, we got Tyga coming, and then we have Shanell coming, then we got Bow Wow — that’s what’s really important. What I’m doing is really never important, actually. I’m a very unimportant guy. It’s just me.” Related Artists Lil Wayne

‘Glee’ Star Charice’s Father Killed

Singer confirms she’ll pull out of concerts this week to travel back to her native Philippines. By Jocelyn Vena Charice Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images “Glee” star and singing sensation Charice’s father was murdered in the Philippines, and the family tragedy has prompted the singer to pull out of concerts on Wednesday and Thursday, according to The Associated Press. “I am very sorry to all my fans from Singapore,” she wrote on Twitter . “I am not going to be there to be part of David Foster and Friends concert. I have to go back to the Philippines as soon as possible to be with my family. I hope you all understand. I love you all and I will see you next year.” According to reports, her 40-year-old father, construction worker Ricky Pempengco, had been at a grocery store in San Pedro township near Manila when he came in contact with a drunk man. After he brushed up against the man, the man stabbed him with an ice pick in the chest and back. Police in the area report that a manhunt is currently under way and a reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Pempengco doesn’t appear to have been targeted, according to authorities. In another message to her fans, written in Filipino, the singer opened up about her relationship with her estranged dad saying, “We had a really great relationship” and “He’s still my Dad, after all.” Local reports suggest that Pempengco and Charice’s mother split when she and her brother were small. “I loved him and I will still love him,” she added about her father. Charice was first introduced to American audiences when she appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2008, following that up with an appearance last year. Since then, she has released several songs (“Pyramid,” “One Day”) and appeared on “Glee.” Her second studio album, Infinity, dropped earlier this year. Related Artists Charice

55-plus-hour dance-a-thon will take place in Los Angeles on Halloween and aims to raise awareness for LGBT youth issues. By Gil Kaufman Online Music Awards Photo: MTV There’s a reason the tagline for the O Music Awards is “offbeat, outrageous, online.” And for its second edition this year, MTV’s signature online awards show will once again attempt to make history, this time by hosting the longest dance party in history . The 55-plus-hour dance-a-thon will be live-streamed at OMusicAwards.com and should wrap up just before the main show kicks off at 11:30 p.m. ET on Halloween (October 31), hopefully with a new Guinness World Record in hand. The stunt is a sequel to the record set earlier this year at the inaugural O Music Awards, where Chiddy of Chiddy Bang went deep to set the Guinness World Record for the Longest Freestyle Rap. It was also revealed on Wednesday (October 5) that after taking over the Strip in Las Vegas last time, the show will roll into Los Angeles beginning October 29, when the dance record attempt will kick off at the Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip. The dance marathon won’t just be for bragging rights, either, as it will aim to raise awareness for LGBT youth issues, especially bullying, by giving fans a chance to donate to a number of organizations during the stream. Among the groups that will benefit from the record attempt are: GLSE (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network), It Gets Better , the Gay Straight Alliance Network (GSA), Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). Viewers will also be able to use social media to support the cause and cheer on their favorite dancers. The current record for longest dance party was achieved in October 2006 by Unique Events Limited in Ireland and began with 40 dancers, with 31 still standing after 55 hours. The second edition of the show will feature new categories courtesy of user suggestions. Among the five new user-generated categories are “Oops! I Did It Online,” in which oversharing celebs such as Sinead O’Connor and T-Pain will face off against the Game and Courtney Love; and Best Artist With a Cameraphone, which pits Demi Lovato against Justin Bieber , Young the Giant, Katy Perry , the Deftones and Shiny Toy Guns. The other new categories include Best Web Born Artist (MNDR, Odd Future, the Weeknd), Best Vintage Viral Video (Metallica, Nirvana, Notorious B.I.G., O’Connor) and Best Lyrics Video (Perry, Joe Jonas, Lenny Kravitz, Christina Perri). ‘Breaking Dawn’ Single Drops: Bruno Mars’ ‘It Will Rain’

‘Twilight’ soundtrack, due November 8, also will feature Christina Perri and Theophilus London. By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/ Getty Images The indie angst of past “Twilight” scores has given way to doo-wop sadness on “It Will Rain,” the lead single Bruno Mars dropped Tuesday (September 27). The full “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” soundtrack will hit the streets November 8. In a previous interview, Mars promised “It Will Rain” would be “dark,” and he didn’t lie. The track — co-written and co-produced by Mars’ team, the Smeezingtons — is signature Mars: Sweeping and romantic, it focuses on the power of true love and the emotional pain of heartbreak. The pain of the track is reminiscent of his smash “Grenade.” “Cause there’ll be no more sunlight, if I lose you, baby,” he sings on the emotional chorus. “There’ll be no clear skies, if I lose you, baby/ Just let the clouds, my eyes will do the same if you walk away/ Every day, it will rain.” “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” opens in theaters November 18. “After seeing the movie, I thought that it would be a perfect fit,” Mars said of the song. “The ‘Twilight’ movies for me [are] a love story. But it’s a dark love story,” he added. “And I think the best way to describe the song is: It’s the darker side of love. I think that pretty much sums it up.” On Monday, a full track list dropped, revealing what other artists made the final cut for the November release. Christina Perri, Theophilus London and Aqualung & Lucy Schwartz are a few of the artists who will be featured. A track list also reveals that Iron & Wine’s song “Flightless Bird, American Mouth (Wedding Version)” will be played during the long-awaited wedding. Nirvana’s Nevermind, By The Numbers

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iconic album, we crunch the numbers to measure its huge impact. By James Montgomery Kurt Cobain Photo: Michel Linssen/Redferns Twenty years ago today (September 24), Nirvana released Nevermind, and the world hasn’t been the same since. The album would go on to usher in rock’s great renaissance, cause a seismic shift in popular culture, bring the underground to the mainstream and make unwilling stars out of three rather scruffy guys from the Pacific Northwest (OK, so Dave Grohl was technically from Northern Virginia, but he lived in Seattle while they were making the album). And while we’d like to say the earth shifted slightly on its axis the moment that first box of Nevermind s was cracked open, we’d be exaggerating. Back then, Nirvana were relative unknowns, and with popular music dominated by the likes of Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole and Color Me Badd (not to mention rock behemoths like Metallica and Guns N’ Roses), the odds of them making an impact of any sort seemed long, at best. Of course, we all know how things turned out. All week long, we’ve been paying tribute to Nevermind ‘s 20th anniversary on MTVNews.com, but today, the album’s actual birthday, we’ve decided to honor its legacy in a slightly different way: by crunching the numbers. Because unlike the countless biographies, as-told-to features and behind-the-scenes tell-alls that came in the album’s wake, the numbers don’t exaggerate: Nevermind was (and still is) huge. Even if it probably never was supposed to be. Here are some vital stats about Nirvana’s seminal album: 7,305 : Number of days since Nevermind was released. In case you’re wondering, that’s 175,320 hours, or 10,519,200 minutes, or 631,152,000 seconds. 46,521 : Number of copies of Nevermind originally shipped to retailers by Geffen Records, which hoped the album would eventually sell 200,000 copies. 144 : Nevermind’s debut position on the Billboard Top 200. 9 : Number of weeks after its release that Nevermind was certified platinum (for shipment of 1 million units) by the Recording Industry Association of America. 1 : Nevermind ‘s position on the Billboard Top 200 during the week of January 11, 1992, when it overtook Michael Jackson’s Dangerous to become the nation’s highest-selling album. 253 : Total number of weeks Nevermind spent on the Billboard Top 200. 30 million : Number of copies Nevermind has sold, worldwide. In the U.S., it’s certified as diamond by the RIAA, for shipment of 10 million copies. 0 : Number of Grammys Nevermind won (it was nominated for two). 4:30 : Total length of first single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The album version runs 5:01, making it the second-longest song on Nevermind (after aptly named hidden track “Endless, Nameless”). 9 : Number of times Kurt Cobain shouts “a denial” at the end of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” 6 : Highest position “Smells Like Teen Spirit” held on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. $670 million : Amount, in cash and stock, Colgate-Palmolive paid to acquire Mennen, manufacturers of Teen Spirit anti-perspirant, in February 1992, six months after the release of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” 2 : Fragrances of Teen Spirit currently available: “Sweet Strawberry” and “Pink Crush.” During the height of the brand’s popularity, there were as many as 10. $30,000-$50,000 : Estimated budget of the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video . $7 million : Estimated budget of Michael and Janet Jackson’s “Scream” video, widely reported to be the most expensive of all time. 18-25 : Age of extras in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video, according to the casting call . Extras were instructed to “adapt a high-school persona, i.e. preppy, punk, nerd, jock” and “be prepared to stay for several hours.” 4 : Number of nominations “Smells Like Teen Spirit” received at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. It won two, for Best Alternative Video and Best New Artist in a Video. 1 : Number of nominations “Weird” Al Yankovic’s “Smells Like Nirvana” received at the same show. $50,000,000 : Amount earned by the Kurt Cobain Estate in 2006, when he topped Forbes magazine’s annual Top-Earning Dead Celebrities list 12 years after his suicide. MTV News reveals the Nevermind You Never Knew , celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s definitive album with classic footage, new interviews and much more.
