Hip-hop icon was fatally gunned down 15 years ago today at age 24. By Rob Markman Notorious B.I.G. Photo: Getty Images March 9, 1997: There was absolutely nothing that could have prepared hip-hop fans for the tragic event that took place on that grim day. Then again, there was not much warning when the Notorious B.I.G. entered the hip-hop world either. Sure, there were key cameos on records with Mary J. Blige and reggae star Super Cat, but when all was said and done and B.I.G. was gunned down 15 years ago today , it became clear that rap had lost one of the great ones — perhaps the greatest one of all time. In the beginning, Biggie Smalls wasn’t even the most prominent star on his label. That position was occupied by rapper Craig Mack, whose 1994 hit single “Flava in Ya Ear” initially set the mark of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ newly minted Bad Boy Records. B.I.G. was a respected lyricist, a raw rapper who at first seemed unlikely to make a mark on radio. In fact, one of his earliest singles, “Just Playing (Dreams),” poked fun at some of music’s biggest hitmakers like Mariah Carey and Patti LaBelle. Then, on September 13, 1994, things done changed. On his debut album, Ready to Die, Biggie would find an exceptional balance between the unapologetic street rhymes for which he was heralded and a newfound sense of the type of pop sensibility that radio programmers love. On “Gimme the Loot,” he threatened to rob a pregnant woman for her jewelry and then managed to sweet-talk the ladies on “Big Poppa.” On his “One More Chance” remix, Big described himself as “black and ugly as ever,” and though he didn’t possess the physique of an LL Cool J, Biggie’s charm made him an unlikely sex symbol. Ready to Die would go on to be certified platinum four times over by the RIAA, but between the bootleg copies and albums sold in largely unaccounted for mom-and-pop shops, its impact was much greater. Rappers like Jay-Z, Nas and Eminem readily admit the influence that Big’s opus had on their own art. Before dropping his second album, Biggie would branch out and start his own label with partner Lance “Un” Rivera and release an album from his group Junior M.A.F.I.A. in 1995. His sexy prot
‘He’s, like, 12 songs in, and he went crazy,’ Mack Maine tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne already has a super successful franchise in Tha Carter series , so why would he want to rest on his laurels? Young Money Records President Mack Maine exclusively revealed to MTV News that not only is Weezy about to lay down tracks for a sequel to his Rebirth rock album, but the “How to Love” hitmaker is already knee-deep in recording a follow-up to 2010’s I Am Not a Human Being LP. “He’s, like, 12 songs in, and he went crazy. He went left. He’s in Martian land right now,” Mack said of I Am Not a Human Being 2. The original Human Being was released digitally in September 2010 while Birdman Jr. was in jail. Though Wayne wasn’t around to promote it, the album contained singles like “Right Above” with Drake and “I’m Single” and has been certified gold by the RIAA. The physical copy of the album debuted at #1 when it dropped in October 2010. According to the YM prez, each separate album franchise allows Wayne the chance to showcase different artistic sides. “He gets to show his rock side, he gets to show his gangsta side and talk to the women on one side,” Mack said of the Rebirth and Carter series, respectively. “On I Am Not a Human Being, he is definitely showing some weirdo, left-brain, I’m-not-from-here type side. He can say what he wants. There are no boundaries, there are no limits.” However diverse he may be in the booth, when Wayne performs live, he is able to pool all his collective talents together — as well as their respective fans. “He captures all those different audiences, and then at a concert or a show, you bring all those different people together,” Mack explained. “You bring your Rebirth rock people, you bring your Carter people, and you bring your I Am Not a Human Being [crowd], and you have a great show. That’s why we sell out arenas every night.” There is no release date yet for I Am Not a Human Being 2 or Rebirth 2. Are you anticipating Lil Wayne’s two new albums? Tell us in the comments! To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iconic album, we crunch the numbers to measure its huge impact. By James Montgomery Kurt Cobain Photo: Michel Linssen/Redferns Twenty years ago today (September 24), Nirvana released Nevermind, and the world hasn’t been the same since. The album would go on to usher in rock’s great renaissance, cause a seismic shift in popular culture, bring the underground to the mainstream and make unwilling stars out of three rather scruffy guys from the Pacific Northwest (OK, so Dave Grohl was technically from Northern Virginia, but he lived in Seattle while they were making the album). And while we’d like to say the earth shifted slightly on its axis the moment that first box of Nevermind s was cracked open, we’d be exaggerating. Back then, Nirvana were relative unknowns, and with popular music dominated by the likes of Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole and Color Me Badd (not to mention rock behemoths like Metallica and Guns N’ Roses), the odds of them making an impact of any sort seemed long, at best. Of course, we all know how things turned out. All week long, we’ve been paying tribute to Nevermind ‘s 20th anniversary on MTVNews.com, but today, the album’s actual birthday, we’ve decided to honor its legacy in a slightly different way: by crunching the numbers. Because unlike the countless biographies, as-told-to features and behind-the-scenes tell-alls that came in the album’s wake, the numbers don’t exaggerate: Nevermind was (and still is) huge. Even if it probably never was supposed to be. Here are some vital stats about Nirvana’s seminal album: 7,305 : Number of days since Nevermind was released. In case you’re wondering, that’s 175,320 hours, or 10,519,200 minutes, or 631,152,000 seconds. 46,521 : Number of copies of Nevermind originally shipped to retailers by Geffen Records, which hoped the album would eventually sell 200,000 copies. 144 : Nevermind’s debut position on the Billboard Top 200. 9 : Number of weeks after its release that Nevermind was certified platinum (for shipment of 1 million units) by the Recording Industry Association of America. 1 : Nevermind ‘s position on the Billboard Top 200 during the week of January 11, 1992, when it overtook Michael Jackson’s Dangerous to become the nation’s highest-selling album. 253 : Total number of weeks Nevermind spent on the Billboard Top 200. 30 million : Number of copies Nevermind has sold, worldwide. In the U.S., it’s certified as diamond by the RIAA, for shipment of 10 million copies. 0 : Number of Grammys Nevermind won (it was nominated for two). 4:30 : Total length of first single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The album version runs 5:01, making it the second-longest song on Nevermind (after aptly named hidden track “Endless, Nameless”). 9 : Number of times Kurt Cobain shouts “a denial” at the end of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” 6 : Highest position “Smells Like Teen Spirit” held on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. $670 million : Amount, in cash and stock, Colgate-Palmolive paid to acquire Mennen, manufacturers of Teen Spirit anti-perspirant, in February 1992, six months after the release of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” 2 : Fragrances of Teen Spirit currently available: “Sweet Strawberry” and “Pink Crush.” During the height of the brand’s popularity, there were as many as 10. $30,000-$50,000 : Estimated budget of the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video . $7 million : Estimated budget of Michael and Janet Jackson’s “Scream” video, widely reported to be the most expensive of all time. 18-25 : Age of extras in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video, according to the casting call . Extras were instructed to “adapt a high-school persona, i.e. preppy, punk, nerd, jock” and “be prepared to stay for several hours.” 4 : Number of nominations “Smells Like Teen Spirit” received at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. It won two, for Best Alternative Video and Best New Artist in a Video. 1 : Number of nominations “Weird” Al Yankovic’s “Smells Like Nirvana” received at the same show. $50,000,000 : Amount earned by the Kurt Cobain Estate in 2006, when he topped Forbes magazine’s annual Top-Earning Dead Celebrities list 12 years after his suicide. MTV News reveals the Nevermind You Never Knew , celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s definitive album with classic footage, new interviews and much more.
Producer Jim Jonsin says The Adventures of Bobby Ray singer ‘wants it to be his album.’ By Rob Markman B.o.B Photo: MTV News B.o.B is out embarking on another adventure. After his 2010 debut, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, produced chart-topping singles and an RIAA-certified gold plaque, the Atlanta rapper is back in the studio crafting his next LP all by his lonesome. “What Bob wanted to do was go into the lab himself and spend his time creating what he wanted his album to have, the direction he wanted,” producer Jim Jonsin told MTV News. “So we’re waiting on him to come back with that house that he’s built so we can go ahead and put all the fixtures in and try to help with it.” Jonsin, who signed B.o.B to his Rebel Rock label, where the artist remains inked alongside T.I.’s Grand Hustle imprint (under Atlantic Records), said that after sessions earlier this year during which he and Bob cut “three or four records,” the “Nothin’ On You” rapper is now out working on the album alone, similar to the recording process on his debut. “Same way it was with the last album. Bob is very creative, he’s a producer, he’s a writer, he’s a real artist,” Jonsin said. While The Adventures of Bobby Ray was heavy on features, with contributions from Bruno Mars, Hayley Williams, Rivers Cuomo and Eminem, Jonsin said the plan for now is for B.o.B to make the album his own. “He doesn’t want to do the feature records; he wants it to be his album,” he said. In that respect, Jonsin, who has created hit records with Lil Wayne, Eminem and Usher, said he’s happy just letting Bob do his own thing and coming in to assist with production duties once the rapper has already laid his foundation. “He does have his ideas and his direction, and everyone feeds off of that,” the multiplatinum producer said. “The A&Rs, the label knows, Tip knows, I know where he’s going. We just gotta hear it, and then we can help him with it.” So far, Bob hasn’t announced a release date or a title for his new album, but in May, the singer told MTV News he’s actually been working on this album for quite some time. “It’s the right timing, and I haven’t revealed the name of the album yet,” he said, “but I’ve been working on this since before The Adventures of Bobby Ray, so it’s a real special project.” What do you expect B.o.B’s new album to sound like?
