Rakim Calls His Longevity In Rap Game ‘A Blessing’

‘The MC’s life span in the game is maybe seven years, 10 years, 12 years,’ pioneering MC reflects to MTV News on 25th anniversary of Paid in Full. By Rob Markman Black Thought and Rakim Photo: MTV News In the 1980s, critics largely labeled hip-hop a passing fad, refusing to believe that the budding art form would grow into a respected genre. So for hip-hop pioneer Rakim , celebrating the 25th anniversary of his and DJ Eric B.’s 1987 debut album, Paid in Full, is rather humbling. “It’s a blessing to be in the game this long and to have your work recognized after 25 years,” Rakim told MTV News on Wednesday from his dressing room after performing the first of two shows with the Roots at legendary New York jazz club the Blue Note. Even though the RIAA’s website lists Paid in Full ‘s original release date as July 9, Rakim Allah celebrated early with Philadelphia’s (and “Late Nate With Jimmy Fallon” house band) the Roots. Together they ran through select cuts from the groundbreaking album. Fans were treated to spirited renditions of PIF classics like “Eric B. Is President” and “I Ain’t No Joke,” as well as other favorites like 1992’s “Juice (Know the Ledge).” “It’s a big thing,” Rakim said of the occasion. “The MC’s life span in the game is maybe seven years, 10 years, 12 years, so to be around and to get respect at this point is a blessing.” Roots rapper Black Thought can still remember the impact of Paid in Full and how “The R” changed things in hip-hop, particularly by introducing the teachings of the Five-Percent Nation to rap. Five Percenters, as the Nation’s followers are called, brought a heightened sense of spirituality to the music with their ideologies based on many Islamic principles. “Pre- Paid in Full, you didn’t hear too many records — there were MCs out there, I used to hear some types with MCs rapping about having knowledge of self and dealing with that type of spirituality — but before Rakim, like, pre- Paid in Full, it wasn’t out there like that. It was very much still a rarity,” Thought said. Ra opened the door for Five-Percent MCs, most notably, the Wu-Tang Clan who based many of their songs on the Nation’s teachings. But that wasn’t all. With Paid in Full, Rakim is credited not only with introducing a more sophisticated vocabulary to hip-hop, but also more complex flows and rhythms and an interlaced rhyme structure. “I’m not saying lyrics or rap was simple or simplistic before that,” Black Thought said, “but the complexity of it, the musicality of it changed after Rakim came out.” Share your memories of Paid in Full in the comments below! Rakim, Backed By The Roots, Revisits Paid In Full

Black Thought sits in for Eric B. at 25th anniversary concert. By Alvin Blanco Black Thought and Rakim Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Rakim is an MC who hails from the era of hip-hop when samples were the source of most of rap music’s booming sounds. Wednesday night, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the iconic and influential MC’s debut album, Paid in Full, Rakim performed his seminal classic in its entirety with Philadelphia group The Roots providing all the backing instrumentation. MTV News caught up with “The R” and the Roots crew’s Black Thought at legendary New York jazz club the Blue Note, where the show went down, to discuss the two acts linking up and hip-hop’s embrace of live instruments. “The Roots is hip-hop royalty right now,” Rakim said. “From what they do, what they bring to the table, for them to holla at me, put this together, invite me out, that let me know, ‘Yo, it’s official.’ Otherwise, they wouldn’t. It’s a good feeling to be around this long and still get that love.” Eric B. dropped Paid in Full with Rakim on July 9, 1987, according to the RIAA, but Wednesday night, Black Thought assisted the God MC onstage as the Roots re-created all of the album’s beats with aplomb. The Long Island native performed songs from his classic album, such as “Eric B. is President” and “Move the Crowd.” The Roots, besides holding down duties as the in-house band for “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” have backed a number of prominent hip-hop acts in the past, including Jay-Z. While MCs being backed by live bands is now a common occurrence, the Roots remember clearly when that was not the case. “Back then, I couldn’t even imagine people taking hip-hop seriously being played with live instrumentation,” Black Thought said. “When we first got our record deal, it was in the era of Nas and Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep and B.I.G. — we was like the odd man out. “Right now, hip-hop is as musical as it’s ever been. I feel like that’s a 360 degrees, man. From having to prove ourselves coming up to now it’s a standard. It’s almost unheard of to go out and do a tour … without having a band. For young kids coming up, they don’t know what it is to be in a realm of hip-hop without live instrumentation and musicality.” But even with hip-hop’s constant musical advancement and development, Black Thought still counted the boom-bap rhythms and lyrical innovations of the night’s special guest as a crucial inspiration, saying, “I wouldn’t have pursued the craft the way I pursued it and linked up with [Roots drummer] ?uestlove had it not been for Ra’s influence.” Share your memories of Paid in Full in the comments below! Nicki Minaj, Rihanna To Shoot ‘Fly’ Video Next

‘We’re going to save the world in more ways than one,’ Minaj says of filming Pink Friday clip this weekend. By Hillary Crosley Nicki Minaj Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj set the Internet ablaze with rumors that she shares a kiss with Drake in her upcoming “Moment 4 Life” video, but she’s preparing to shoot another video with someone else who’s gotten frisky with her. “We’re shooting the video with Rihanna for ‘Fly’ this weekend,” Nicki told E! News on Thursday. “We’re going to save the world in more ways than one with the video, and that’s all I can say about that. … I love Ri Ri! I mean, when she’s not grabbing my ass, she’s a sweet girl.” The Pink Friday rapper also mentioned she might be willing to try her hand at a country song. “Of course!” Minaj said when asked if she’d collaborate with Taylor Swift. “I like everyone. I don’t listen to music based on genre. Like, I’ll hear a song and then I’ll live for that song for like months and I’ll be like, ‘Who the hell is that?’ I listen to Taylor Swift. I like Coldplay. I listen to gospel a lot. I listen to anything that’s just beautiful music.” A duet with a certain pants-less pop star is also up for debate. “I’d definitely be open to it, yeah … I mean, Gaga is badass . Being compared to greats can never bother me,” Nicki said. Minaj is grateful, she said, not only for her own success, but what her achievements mean for up-and-coming femcees. “I’m proud that women, female rappers that come in this game after Nicki Minaj can see that, you know what? There is a chance for you to sell just as much as the boys and to be recognized,” she said. “And you don’t have to feel like, because you’re a female rapper, you’re going to not be recognized. And so for that alone, I’m proud, I’m happy.” Pink Friday was RIAA-certified platinum this week. Are you excited to see Nicki and Rihanna’s “Fly” video? Tell us in the comments! Waka Flocka Flame ‘Feels Good’ About Gold-Certified ‘No Hands’

‘The first song going gold is big for me,’ Atlanta MC tells MTV News of club staple. By Hillary Crosley, with additional reporting by Audrey Kim Waka Flocka Flame Photo: MTV News 2010 has been a banner year for Waka Flocka Flame , not only in the streets, but also on the Billboard charts. Now, the Atlanta MC’s female-flavored anthem “No Hands,” featuring Roscoe Dash and Wale, has been certified gold by the RIAA after selling 500,000 copies. “That feel good, the first song going gold is big for me,” Waka Flocka Flame told MTV News at the Power 106 Cali Christmas concert in Los Angeles. “It means that I’m growing as an artist, so I need to take effect to that.” After dropping his mixtape Salute Me or Shoot Me, Vol. 1 in January 2009, many were introduced to the energetic rapper through “O Let’s Do It,” Waka’s breakout record. The rowdy club track quickly became a fan favorite and, a year later — after he peppered the streets with more mixtapes and a guest verse on “Bingo,” from Gucci Mane’s 2009 LP, The State vs. Radric Davis — “O Let’s Do It” got an official remix featuring Diddy, Rick Ross and Gucci Mane. Then “Hard in Da Paint” took over the clubs in early 2010, followed by “No Hands,” which currently sits at #1 on Billboard ‘s Rap Songs chart, #22 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Earlier this year, MTV News’ Hip-Hop Brain Trust voted the rapper 2010’s #8 Hottest MC in the Game . “I was like, got-damn!” Waka said at the time. “Oh, sh–, I made it! Hell yeah, I was [surprised]. Come on, man, I never thought I’d be on something like that. Not yet. It’s so soon.” What do you think of Waka’s breakout success this year? Sound off in the comments! Walter Hawkins, Grammy-Winning Gospel Singer, Dead At 61

Pastor and leader of Love Center Choir topped the charts from the ’70s to the ’90s. By James Montgomery Walter Hawkins Photo: Ilya Dreyvitser/ Wireimage Walter Hawkins , a Grammy-winning gospel singer, composer and pastor, died Sunday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 61. His brother Edwin a Grammy-winning gospel musician in his own right, told The Associated Press that Walter passed away at his home in Ripon, California, adding that he “suffered bravely but now he will suffer no more, and he will be greatly missed.” Hawkins was born in Oakland and began singing in gospel choirs as a teenager, along with his brothers. In 1967, as a member of the Edwin Hawkins Singers, he recorded “Oh Happy Day,” which would become one of the first gospel-leaning songs to cross over to the mainstream, winning a Grammy and being named one of the RIAA’s Songs of the Century. Following the success of “Day,” Hawkins enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied for his divinity degree. While at the university, he also recorded his first solo album, titled Do Your Best, in 1972. The following year, he became a pastor and founded the Love Center Church in Oakland, where he also formed the Love Center Choir. With the choir, he recorded a successful series of albums called Love Alive, which topped the Billboard Gospel Albums charts from the 1970s until the ’90s. The fourth installment, released in 1990, stayed at #1 for an astonishing 33 consecutive weeks. As a songwriter and composer, Hawkins worked with the likes of Van Morrison and Diahann Carroll and was responsible for more than 100 hit songs on the gospel charts. Over the course of his career, Hawkins won one Grammy (he was nominated for nine) and three Dove Awards, and he was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame. At the time of his death, he was said to be working on a brand new Love Alive album, due to be released in the fall. Related Artists Walter Hawkins

Joel Tenenbaum fined $675,000 over copyright infringement

After just three hours of deliberations, a jury has ruled that convicted pirate Joel Tenenbaum has willfully infringed on copyrights, and has awarded the RIAA and the media companies $675,000 USD, $22,500 for each of the 30 songs he admitted to sharing. In some ways, Tenenbaum should be grateful, as the jury could have awarded up to $150,000 in penalties per track. In the recent ruling against Jammie Thomas-Rasset , the jury awarded the RIAA $1.92 million USD, on only 24 tracks.
