Lady Gaga’s VMA Performance All About ‘Fearlessness’

Laurieann Gibson calls opening performance an opportunity to ‘create a new understanding of music.’ By Kelley L. Carter, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images So much for giving up the goods. We really tried to get Laurieann Gibson, Lady Gaga’s creative director , to spill her guts about what Mother Monster has planned for her VMA performance on Sunday, but she’s keeping things under wraps — in the best way possible. She jokingly said a few censored (and, considering how much she’s bleeped in the embedded video, obscene) things about what viewers will see. Long story short: She’s not telling. But Gibson did say of Gaga’s opening performance, “I hope that people take the fearlessness away. The notion that you don’t have to follow what is popular and that you can constantly take the opportunity and create a new understanding of music and performing. “It could mean standing under one spotlight,” she continued. “It could mean tons of camels and belly-dancing girls. I don’t know. One is not necessarily better than the other. But it is about the artist. It’s about ‘Who’s the artist?’ So in that one moment, you have to take it and give it all you can.” Gibson is just following suit on the secrecy front: When Gaga talked to MTV News last week, she said she wants to surprise her fans at the VMAs. “I’m really very honored and excited to open the show,” Lady Gaga told MTV News. “But I won’t reveal anything; I want it to be a surprise.” From what Gaga and Gibson revealed, the performance sounds like it will be avant garde, much like her 2009 VMA set, when Gaga took the stage for a blood-soaked “Paparazzi” performance . “It will be a continuation of everything I’ve been doing, and it will be exactly what they want,” Gaga said. “I’m pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Britney Cozies Up To Beyonce: VMA Seating Revealed!

Presenter Kim Kardashian has a VMA seat, but where’s hubby Kris Humphries? By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kim Kardashian’s seat at the 2011 Video Music Awards Photo: John Shearer/ MTV It’s that time of year again, everyone. The seating cards are being placed inside the Nokia Theatre in sunny Los Angeles as producers work to put the finishing touches on Sunday’s 2011 Video Music Awards . So what types of match-ups have they thought up this year? MTV News’ Jim Cantiello investigated and found out some tasty tidbits. “Tony Bennett: This guy is a baller, and whoever is behind him is going to have the craziest contact high,” he teased of the 85-year-old crooner, who will pay tribute to the late Amy Winehouse at Sunday’s show. So who snagged that seat? Wiz Khalifa, naturally. Kim Kardashian will also be in the house as a presenter, but Jim wondered: “Where’s her husband at? Her husband doesn’t get a seat card. You thought when you marry Kim Kardashian you’d instantly get more famous. Dude, you’re still not famous enough to get your own card at the VMAs,” Jim warned the newlywed. His advice? “#DealWithIt.” “This is going to be a very rowdy section at the VMAs Sunday night,” Jim said as he made his way through the theater. “This is the land of Odd Future. Now, there are like 100 members of Odd Future. I’m only seeing three cards. So sorry, Hodgy, you’re not invited this year.” When Jim noticed there were some potato sacks lying around, he had a thought: “Here at the VMAs, we are prepared for anything in the audience, so if Lady Gaga wants to have a potato-sack race with Lil Wayne, we got them covered.” Of course, Justin Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez are seated next to each other. Jim, however, knows how to make it even more adorable. “The only thing that would make this cuter is if Maru the cat was trying to get in between them,” he suggested. Perhaps the section of the room fans will be most excited to see contains two of pop’s ruling divas. “I’m in section Queen B at the VMAs,” he said. So what does that mean? Beyonc

Pitbull Invites Lindsay Lohan To The VMAs

As Lohan sues him over the lyrics to ‘Give Me Everything,’ the rapper extends an olive branch. By James Montgomery Pitbull Photo: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images Pitbull and Lindsay Lohan may currently be at odds over the lyrics of “Give Me Everything,” but the rapper has extended an olive branch to the oft-troubled actress … in the form of an invitation to this Sunday’s . That’s what Mr. 305 said in a statement posted Thursday (August 25) on his Planet Pit website , in which he addressed the lawsuit Lohan filed last week that alleges the lyrics of his hit — in particular, the line “I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan” — are “destined to do irreparable harm” to the actress’ career. Pit want it known that he hopes the two sides can hash out their differences at the VMAs. “We’ll be performing [‘Give Me Everything] at the VMAs , and, as a matter of fact, I’d like to send out an invitation to Lindsay Lohan,” Pitbull said. “Hopefully she can come with me to the VMAs, and we can figure this out.” Pitbull also said he was “very surprised” when he first learned of the lawsuit, especially since he considers “Give Me Everything” — and his mention of Lohan — to be positive. “It was very ironic, to be honest with you. At first I read it and I was like, ‘Nah, this has got to be a joke,’ [but] come to find out it’s very realistic,” he said. “Me being someone who supports Lindsay Lohan’s career, where I’ve seen her go through everything she’s gone through, and everything that has to do with this record is so positive — you see the way I start off the record, where I say, ‘I took my life from negative to positive/ I just want y’all to know that’ — when I mention Lindsay Lohan in the record, it was really a positive message. “[The lyric] is ‘Hustlers move in silence, so I’m tip-toeing/ So keep blowing, got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan,’ ” Pitbull continued. “When I say I got it locked up, if you’re from the neighborhood, when they say, ‘You got it locked up’ that means you run that area.” And as far as Lohan’s claims that the song has caused her — and her career — irreparable harm, Pitbull said that he never intended to hurt anybody … quite the opposite, in fact. “In no way, shape or form would I want to bring that on anybody. I didn’t look to defame, degrade or hurt someone’s career,” he said. “For me, mentioning it on a number one record around the world, I thought it would be helping someone’s career, and keeping them relevant. We mention people’s names all the time; when it comes to rapping, it’s always about double meanings and metaphors and how you flip certain things.” Pitbull added that he’s not sure what the next step in the legal process would be (“That has to come with the attorneys,” he said). But who knows? Perhaps things will be patched up after Sunday’s VMAs. “It shows that success comes with a whole lot,” Pit said. “And I always say, as hard as you work to succeed in this music business, there’s four or five people working harder to take it all away from you.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Eminem, Nirvana Pave Way For 2011 VMA Best New Artist

Big Sean, Foster the People, Kreayshawn, Tyler, the Creator or Wiz Khalifa will follow in their footsteps come Sunday. By Gil Kaufman Eminem accepts the award for Best New Artist at the 1999 VMAs Photo: Frank Micelotta/ ImageDirect We’re all rookies at some point, but when it comes to the MTV Video Music Awards ‘ Best New Artist category, you only get one shot at being the new kid on the block. And for this year’s nominees — Big Sean , Foster the People , , Tyler, the Creator and Wiz Khalifa — now is their time to shine and join an illustrious list of previous winners that includes Lady Gaga, Guns N’ Roses, Justin Bieber and 50 Cent. Since the very first Moonman was handed out in this category in 1984, MTV has a pretty stellar track record for picking artists who either went on to superstardom or at least represent a very specific moment in time (we’re looking at you, Jesus Jones). While hip-hop heavy, this year’s nominees span a pretty wide range of styles, from Kreayshawn’s gritty, viral sensation “Gucci Gucci” to Khalifa’s day-in-the-life “Black and Yellow,” Tyler’s bugged-out, arty “Yonkers,” Big Sean’s penthouse-rockin’ “My Last” and the DIY feel of the lone rock entry, Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks.” Who’s gonna win? Well, you’ll have to tune in Sunday to find out, but chances are whoever takes home the prize will be a name you’ll be hearing for a good, long time. The very first BNA Moonman went to the Eurythmics in 1984, notable not just because of that British synth soul duo’s long, hit-filled career, but because they beat out a singer that went on to quite a career herself: Madonna. Over the years, such beloved bands as Crowded House (1987), GN’R (1988), Nirvana (1992), Eminem (1999), Alicia Keys (2001), 50 (2003) and Gaga (2009) have taken the prize. “I will always remember Best New Artist,” Lady Gaga told MTV News recently, recalling how she surprised Eminem by asking him to hold her Moonman as she thanked “God and the gays” and took off her red lace mask. “The first time that MTV recognized me, that changed my life.” Of course, there have also been some winners whose video work represented their artistic and commercial high point, such as ‘Til Tuesday (1985), A-ha (1986), Michael Penn (1990), the aforementioned Jesus Jones (1991), Fiona Apple (1997) and Macy Gray (2000). Even more surprising are the commercial heights reached by a number of nominated acts who didn’t win the award but went on to some pretty stellar careers regardless, including Whitney Houston (1986), Lenny Kravitz (1990), Beck and Green Day (1994), Kid Rock (1999), Christina Aguilera and Pink (2000), Coldplay (2001), Katy Perry (2008) and Nicki Minaj (2010). And, of course, there are the nominees who make you think: Really? Sure, Timbuk3’s “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades” was fun, but Best New Artist? The same might be said for others whose careers never quite reached their initial peaks, from Neneh Cherry (1989) to Jane Child (1990), Gerardo (1991), Chumbawamba (1998), Orgy (1999), the Darkness (2004) and James Blunt (2006). Viewers can vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com online or m.mtv.com on their mobile phone. In addition, Best New Artist text voting is open to all wireless carrier subscribers by texting BNA to 66333. Voting continues through the show, live on Sunday. VMA Nominee Big Sean Gets Carjacked On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off,’ Best New Artist nominee reveals. By Kara Warner Big Sean Photo: MTV News Rising star and Best New Artist VMA nominee Big Sean might be riding high these days, but in the new episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, the G.O.O.D. Music MC reveals a not-so-starry moment from his teens. “When I was 17, I got a brand-new 2005 Chevy Impala. I was one of the only people with a new car so I was definitely enjoying it, having fun,” Sean recalled. “One day outside my house, you know sometimes when you’re blocked in, you have to move cars out the driveway and move them back in? I was just trying to hurry up and do it, so I left my car running, hopped out my and car hopped into another car to pull it into the driveway,” he explained. “Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off. I’m like ‘Mom! Mom! Mom! Somebody stole my car!’ I was thinking, ‘Damn, I f—-d up.’ ” The Detroit native said that he and his mother called the police, but due to the number of carjackings in the area, their request wasn’t considered a high priority. “I had a tracking device on my car,” Sean said. “And we still couldn’t find my car.” One 2005 Chevy Impala aside, the “Finally Famous” lyricist hasn’t experienced the loss of any other prized possessions. For now he is focused on his music, and his first-ever VMA nomination. “Man, I was hype as hell,” Sean told MTV News upon learning of his nomination for Best New Artist . “I called my mom at like midnight. I was in Charlotte [North Carolina] the night when I found out, and I called my mom and I woke her up,” he revealed. “I’m excited. Hopefully, it’s gonna be a good night.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring VMA nominees Big Sean, Tyler, the Creator, and Kreayshawn — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Lil Wayne Drops Deep Messages In ‘How To Love’ Video

Tragic clip tugs at heartstrings with depictions of abuse, molestation and prostitution. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: Getty Images If fans already thought that Lil Wayne put his emotions on display on “How to Love,” off Tha Carter IV, wait until they get a load of the video, which premieres online on Wednesday (August 24). The Chris Robinson-directed clip is filled with drama and social commentary, telling the story of a beautiful young woman who stumbles into every imaginable pitfall. The video opens in an abortion clinic, where a woman lies in a gown on the operating table. Suddenly she changes her mind and flies off the table and through the clinic’s hall, choosing to keep her child. Shortly after that, the song’s acoustic guitar licks drop in and we see a shirtless Wayne alone in a dimly lit hallway, singing, “You had a lot of crooks try to steal your heart, never really had luck, could never figure out how to love.” It is then that the distressed woman’s story begins to unspool. We first see her being abused by her boyfriend, thrown to the ground in her bedroom while her infant, sitting in a car seat nearby, cries. Fast-forward a few years later, and the mother is in a prison visiting room, talking to her incarcerated boyfriend through a glass panel while her daughter, now a toddler, sits in her lap. “How to Love” producer Detail warned that the single’s video would “shock” us. A boyfriend in prison is just the tip of the iceberg. Things get disturbing in a flashback scene that reveals the woman was molested as a child. The scene starts just as Tunechi belts out, “When you were just a youngin, your looks were so precious.” Cash Money and company clearly pulled no punches. We see the pre-teen sitting in pigtails as her father (or father figure) approaches her unfastening his belt, putting his fingers to his lips, messaging for her to keep quiet as she tries to fight him off. In the following sequences, it is hinted that she eventually gave birth to her molester’s baby. The message is deep, and in the video Wayne plays second fiddle, not letting his performance shots get in the way of Robinson’s story-telling. Together they illustrate a domino effect. Forget going from bad to worse: During the course of the five-minute clip things go from tragic to abysmal. The young woman’s eventual career as a stripper begets prostitution, and it is her life as a prostitute that ultimately leads to a death sentence. At approximately the three-minute mark the music cuts out and we see the principal character in a doctor’s office similar to the one shown in the first scene, only this time she isn’t able to run from the results. “Your blood results came back positive,” the doctor tells her. When she asks, “Positive for what?,” he replies, “HIV.” Maybe the message is dramatically overdone, but with the clip Wayne — who will be performing at the Video Music Awards and dropping his album at midnight afterwards — sparks discussion much like TLC did with their cautionary 1995 video for “Waterfalls.” There is hope, however; in a rewind sequence the victim’s life is redone. In an alternate reality, the abuse that she faced is erased. There is no molestation, no beatings, no prison visits, stripping or exchanging sex for money. Instead she graduates high school, is married in a church and winds up in the same doctor’s office, this time finding out that she is pregnant. She reacts with a joyous sigh, turns to her mother and says, “Thank you, just thank you for being there for me and teaching me how to love.” It wasn’t just the guitar strings that Weezy plucked at with this single; he was clearly tugging at the heartstrings as well. Bruno Mars’ VMA Promo: Go Behind The Scenes!

Mars, who is performing at Sunday’s show, throws an old-school house party in the clip. By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars in his 2011 VMA promo Photo: MTV In Bruno Mars ‘ VMA promo, he hangs out with some fresh-looking hipsters while spinning tunes from folks like Ginuwine and Michael Jackson. The clip captures the joie de vivre of a good old-fashioned house party attended by fashionable folks who love to dance. “I think what you’re going to see is a little of my personality, a lot of my influences and a lot of people having a good time,” he told MTV News on the set. “I think that this year’s VMAs is a celebration and a party, and MTV did a great job of putting this commercial together.” In between takes, the party never stopped. Extras and dancers milled around, grooving to the tunes blasting throughout the NYC soundstage. Bruno chilled with everyone, making small talk with his fellow partygoers when the cameras weren’t rolling. The commercial itself is chockfull of great tunes, and when Mars was shooting the promo, he displayed his skills on the piano. So what tunes make Bruno Mars’ party set list? “This is my party; I’m DJing. I’m playing music that I grew up listening to,” he said. “I grew up listening to oldies, and so every time I hear, like, Little Richard or James Brown, the Police, it does something to me. It gets me in the party mood, and I’m just hoping to bring it to this party.” Not only is he set to perform at the VMAs — airing live Sunday at 9 p.m. from L.A. — he’s up for four Moonmen, including Video of the Year , Best Male Video and Best Pop Video for “Grenade.” “I grew up watching VMAs. I know every performance,” Mars said. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching MTV VMAs, and when we got the phone call saying that my video was up for Video of the Year — that’s the big-boy award.” Mars would be tickled to win Best Choreography for his feel-good track “The Lazy Song.” “You know what I’m excited for?” he said. “As much as I put blood, sweat and tears into ‘Grenade,’ I’m excited for ‘The Lazy Song,’ Best Choreography.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Justin Bieber’s VMA-Nominated ‘U Smile’: Frame By Frame

‘We took a more mature approach in the video, focusing on him as an artist,’ director Colin Tilley says of clip, which is up for Best Male Video. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage In the Colin Tilley-directed “U Smile” video , Justin Bieber meets some girls on the street and becomes smitten with one of them. He then takes her to hang out with him at a big concert hall, where he makes her swoon by playing the piano for her. The sugary-sweet clip is up for Best Male Video at the 2011 Video Music Awards , and Tilley, who also worked with Bieber on “Never Let You Go,” spoke to MTV News about the behind-the-scenes of making the video just days before the VMAs go live Sunday. The video opens with Bieber meeting some fans outside a theater, and the Flip cam footage they used for audio ended up making the final cut. “During this scene, we were only outside for 15 minutes, but literally paparazzi were everywhere,” Tilley recalled. “It was pretty difficult, but I’m happy with the finished product. This whole intro scene was actually done very fast, because we didn’t have much time before the sun set, so we really just had to go full-throttle.” While paparazzi and nature proved to be obstacles, a third was making sure that Tilley cast the perfect leading lady. “The girl’s gotta be really great … she was really nice and she did a great job,” he said. “Justin and her clicked really well.” The video is actually pretty simple, with the focus of it being on “our classic piano in this beautiful theater, lots of great lighting. This is pretty much focused on Justin’s performance. “This song, in general, when I first heard it, I kind of got the feel that it was a more mature feel for Justin,” Tilley continued. “So we took a more mature approach in the video, focusing on him as an artist and as a kid growing up. … For me, this was kind of the place he goes every night to practice, so he was willing to take this girl he saw on the street and take her into his world.” For Tilley, the standout shots are of Bieber hanging out in an alleyway, calling to mind the images in Michael Jackson videos. “This is probably my favorite setup in the video,” he said. “In this alleyway, it had a whole Michael Jackson feel. It was pretty iconic for Justin at the time.” As it turns out, the video was shot right after the 2010 VMAs, when Bieber took home his first-ever Moonman . “The night before, he had won an award and he just came to set with a great attitude; he was super positive,” Tilley said. “I hadn’t worked with Justin for probably a year. He’s so much fun to work with. He’s got a really cool attitude on set.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8.
