Chris Brown’s VMA-Nominated ‘Look At Me Now’: Frame By Frame

‘Seeing them together performing was so cool live,’ director Colin Tilley says of clip featuring Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Brown in the “Look at Me Now” video Photo: Jive Chris Brown’s eye-catching clip for “Look at Me Now” is up for two Video Music Awards this year. It’s battling it out for Best Collaboration thanks to assists by Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes, as well as Best Hip-Hop Video . The video’s neon-colored visuals came courtesy of director Colin Tilley, who has worked with Brown on five other music videos. When MTV News sat down with Tilley to take us through the clip frame by frame in anticipation of Sunday’s 2011 Video Music Awards, he explained that the video, much like the song, was a collaboration that was as fun to watch on set as it is for fans to watch the finished product. The visuals include lots of graffiti artwork, some of which was created by Brown himself. “Chris actually did a lot of pieces, like custom pieces, before we even did the video,” Tilley recalled. “We came in there a day early and he did some really cool custom pieces.” The one non-graffiti piece that really stands out in the video is the cage that Brown hangs out in. It went through some changes before it became the tricked-out version that appears in the video. “The birdcage, it started off more like a ‘Thunderdome’-type thing, but once we got the gold cage and we put the speakers and the gold mask, it just kind of created this really awesome thing,” he said. “This dance routine was crazy,” he continued about the next scene. “When I was cutting the video, I was having a hard time trying to get as much dance as possible … it was so good from start to finish. It was well-choreographed.” The real focus of the video is the stars themselves, who impressed Tilley. “We have Busta, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown together, all on top of an ambulance, with just so much stuff going on around them,” he said. “The ambulance’s roof actually caved in after the shoot was over.” Busta and Brown had a certain magic in their scenes. “Seeing them together performing was so cool live,” he said. “Busta Rhymes, seeing him perform this for the first time, I was shocked — he literally does not breathe [as he raps].” “Lil Wayne, of course, we had him perform in front of the DeLorean,” Tilley added. “We just put all these other things around him portraying that energy … when he steps on set, his energy is so crazy.” All in all, the video was really about these three guys coming together and getting crazy in the clip. “It was an amazing collaboration,” he said. “They were all really cool. They were down to make something amazing, and seeing them work together was really cool. I think everything was so on point with us.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV Drops At Midnight After VMAs

Weezy’s VMA performance and nominations lead up to the long-awaited release on Sunday night. By Alvin Blanco Lil Wayne Photo: Clinton Gilders/ FilmMagic Lil Wayne is going to dabble in a little midnight madness. Already scheduled to perform at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Weezy has just announced that he’ll also be dropping his highly anticipated new album, Tha Carter IV, at midnight, right after the show. “I am extremely excited to be the first artist to utilize such an amazing idea. I hope that I can open the door for others,” Lil Wayne said in a press statement. The YMCMB rapper’s latest will be released digitally via iTunes, Amazon and other legal MP3 download destinations at 12 a.m. on August 29. Those still dedicated to physical CDs need not worry since the album will be in retail stores later that Monday. The release of Tha Carter IV will be the capstone to a big night for Weezy, who is also up for Moonmen in the Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Collaboration categories. And despite Wayne’s skateboarding accident over the weekend (he tweeted that he needed nine stitches for a gash over his eye), he is sure to take the Nokia Theatre stage by storm this week. “The MTV Video Music Awards are one of the most watched and respected shows in the industry,” Ronald “Slim” Williams, CEO of Cash Money Records, said in a statement. “Wayne is one of the most respected and prolific artists in the industry. By pairing the release of Tha Carter IV with the VMAs, it will certainly add to the overall anticipation and excitement for fans everywhere for what will surely be an unforgettable evening.” With Jay-Z and Kanye West throwing a wrench into traditional album-release strategies with their Watch the Throne project, Lil Wayne has chosen to make his own release an event by coinciding with another. “Lil Wayne continues to change the game; this time with a new release strategy that demonstrates the power of the VMAs to grab the attention of music fans,” MTV President Stephen Friedman said. “After our millions of viewers experience the VMAs, they can go online at midnight and download the album they’ve all been waiting for.” Tha Carter IV ‘s latest single is “She Will” and will feature appearances from, T-Pain, Tech N9ne, Rick Ross, John Legend, Jadakiss, Nas and Busta Rhymes, among others. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress: Peek Behind The Scenes At Last Year’s VMAs

On ‘VMAs Revealed’ MTV staffers recall the reaction backstage when Gaga unveiled her beefy couture. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Getty Images The Video Music Awards have a long history of outrageous, over-the-top and just plain bizarre fashion firsts. Artists tend to think way outside the box when it comes to dressing up for the VMAs , but perhaps no getup in show history has gotten as much attention, caused as much head scratching and turned more heads than Lady Gaga ‘s infamous meat dress. After walking the white carpet in a flowing gold and burgundy Alexander McQueen dress with a matching headdress, Mother Monster shocked the world at the 2010 awards when she slipped into her third outfit of the night: a dress made out of some choice cuts of beef. “As soon as I saw her on that white carpet I just knew that this night was gonna be Gaga insanity,” said Alycia Belle, VMA wardrobe stylist for the 2010 show, in a new “VMAs Revealed” special that premiered on Saturday (August 20). Before unwrapping the cow couture, Gaga had merely one wardrobe change during the show — a black Armani leather dress with spiked bustier. But when the time came to announce Video of the Year, the audience had no idea what was about to hit them. The folks working behind the scenes saw a suspicious number of coolers being brought into Gaga’s dressing room, so they could tell that something was up. “I’m getting calls that she needs to be in her seat, we give her kind of a two-minute head’s up, the door opens up, and I see she’s wearing a red dress,” said Ernesto Elias, Gaga’s talent escort at the show. “I start to notice people staring a little bit harder than they normally would.” And with good reason. While plenty of stars were wearing leather shoes, or even cowhide skirts, no one expected the eye-popping fashion choice that Gaga was about to unveil. “I was literally this close to her … I just remember looking at it and just wondering, ‘Is that really … ?’ remembered Sandra Piedra, talent coordinator for the 2010 VMAs. After a harder look, Elias said he realized that it was not a “normal” type of fabric. Let’s call that the understatement of the year. “People who were on the floor, who are right around her, are like, ‘It’s meat ! Meat! Like, ground chuck meat!’ ” Dave Sirulnick, executive producer of the VMAs, recalled. “I know that there is nobody who ever heard the two words ‘meat’ and ‘dress’ put together before September 12 [2010] at about 11 p.m.” And with the announcement this week that Gaga will be opening the 2011 VMAs , fans of music and fashion everywhere can’t wait to see how she’ll top herself. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Justin Bieber Fans Nearly Crush Chelsea Handler, In ‘VMAs Revealed’

Learn how an army of Beliebers almost mauled the 2010 VMA host on ‘VMAs Revealed,’ airing Saturday at noon ET on MTV. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: WireImage It seems that Justin Bieber can’t so much as step outside without inciting a riot of considerable magnitude, so it was to be expected that his performance at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — supposedly a secret song-and-dance routine set outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles — would probably attract some attention. But VMA producers had no idea just how out-of-hand things would get — or how close VMA host Chelsea Handler would be to being mauled by Justin’s army of Beliebers as a result. It was all thanks to one harmless tweet by JB himself, as we learn in “VMAs Revealed,” a new behind-the-scenes special set to air this Saturday at noon ET on MTV. It all started before the VMAs, during Bieber’s rehearsals. Producers planned to have Handler exit the theater and take a spot at the front of the stage, holding a sign that read “Chelsea hearts Justin.” Everything was going swimmingly until an army of Bieber fanatics got wind of things. “Out on the Nokia Plaza, they were rehearsing Justin Bieber’s performance,” MTV News VP Ryan Kroft explains in “Revealed.” “[And] if you sort of stopped and paid attention, out comes Chelsea Handler in curlers.” Of course, on the night of the big show — after Bieber had tweeted about “free tickets to [his] VMA performance” — things changed. The Nokia Plaza was positively packed with screaming Bieber fans, who didn’t take kindly to Handler’s intrusion — and they let her know by crowding up against a barricade, nearly crushing her and sending all plans out the window. Producers never quite got a good shot of Handler and her sign — “I think you can see her sign bobbing around, you just can’t see her head. She should’ve worn the curlers,” Kroft said — but luckily, she escaped serious bodily harm. And the true Beliebers ended up being happy too: Not only did they get to see a once-in-a-lifetime performance from their idol, but Bieber would go on to win the VMA for Best New Artist later that night. For more backstage stories from the 2010 VMAs — like Rihanna’s wig mishap , Lady Gaga’s unforgettable meat dress and 30 Seconds to Mars’ unconventional white-carpet arrival — tune in to “VMAs Revealed” this Saturday at noon ET on MTV. Would Lady Gaga Ever Want To Be President?

The Mother Monster talks about which of the country’s big problems she’d like to solve. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lady Gaga Photo: Scott Gries/ Picture Group Lady Gaga has never been shy to stump for political causes. She’s stumped for marriage equality and spoke out against “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Her Born This Way track “Americano” even touches on immigration issues, but just because she’s currently pop music’s most vocal advocate doesn’t mean she’d want anything to do with actually holding public office. During the live “MTV First: Lady Gaga” on Thursday night, the singer said that she has no aspirations to ever do something like become president, even if she was given a free pass for the day to be the leader of the free world. Watch as Gaga lets her fans announce that she’s opening the VMAs this year. “Well, first of all, I wouldn’t want to be president for the day,” she told MTV News. “And I say that because I really, for myself, it’s important that my message, although it has political implications, I like to keep myself separate. “Because politics can constrain things,” she continued. “So our message can be completely free of any politics and we can just surge forward.” Lady Gaga gave us the real story behind her “Yo
