Britney Spears’ VMA Promo: Go Behind The Scenes!

Promo reflects on Brit’s career and inspirations while looking ahead to August 28 awards show. By Christina Garibaldi Britney Spears in her 2011 VMA promo Photo: Roderick Trestrail II/ MTV On Thursday (August 11), Britney Spears took over MTV when her Video Music Awards promo made its debut and MTV News was there when she filmed it. The 30-second promo interlaces Spears’ latest hit “I Wanna Go” with her own “Slave 4 U,” Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” and Madonna’s “Everybody” as dancers dressed in Brit’s most-famous outfits crowd around her. There’s also a nod to Michael Jackson, with a poster on the wall that says “Billy Jean,” in reference to MJ’s hit “Billie Jean,” and a dancer who mimics the late King of Pop’s iconic moves. At the end of the promo, Spears stands in front of a wall that cryptically reads “A Tribute to Britney Spears” before the date of the VMAs — 8.28 — flashes on the screen. Stay tuned to see what it all means … Spears, whose “Till the World Ends” is nominated for Best Pop Video and Best Choreography, filmed the promo last month in Miami, and MTV News was on the set for a behind-the-scenes look. “The general concept of what we are going for is basically called ‘The Muse Factory,’ ” director Jahai Brightly explained. “It’s where all your favorite artists that are going to be at the Video Music Awards this year meet and explore their influences and inspirations.” The promo pulls from Spears’ own musical influences from over the years, which is portrayed through the set design, wardrobe and, of course, through Brit herself. In the promo, Spears pays homage to Madonna, Michael and Janet, whom she calls “the people I’ve grown up listening to and totally inspire [me].” The promo doesn’t just show the pop star’s own musical icons; it also reminds us of what a musical force Spears is as well. “We are going to be exploring her past styles,” Brightly said of Spears’ classic looks. “In particular, past six styles that represent each of her albums, with the seventh one being the current incarnation.” Spears, whose outfit was designed to represent her current style, is dressed in a custom-made studded leather jacket, a shredded black T-shirt and her signature cutoff jean shorts. The promo begins with Spears paying homage to her latest album, Femme Fatale. “I did the opening segment, where I’m at the mirror and I’m representing how many albums I’ve done, which is number seven,” Spears said. Spears then begins her journey down memory lane, where she is surrounded by dancers dressed up in some of her signature video looks, such as the flight-attendant costume in “Toxic” and her infamous red catsuit in “Oops! … I Did It Again.” “I’m walking down a hallway and I’m seeing memorabilia of all my performances that I’ve done in the past,” Spears said. “All my dancers are dressed up in my old outfits, which it’s really cool.” What do you think of Britney’s VMA promo? Young The Giant To Make VMA Performance Debut

‘My Body’ rockers join lineup that includes Adele, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown on August 28. By Gil Kaufman Young the Giant Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images MTV has a history of providing up-and-coming acts with a huge stage at the annual Video Music Awards . In recent years, everyone from Nicki Minaj to the Polyphonic Spree, Daddy Yankee, Keri Hilson, Wale and B.o.B have made major splashes at the event. This year, it’s Young the Giant’s turn. The California rockers, who’ve scored a pair of alternative radio hits with “My Body” and the charging rocker “Cough Syrup,” will make their VMA performance debut on August 28 when they take the stage at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The group, whose self-titled debut was released in January, has already been featured across the MTV universe as a “Push” artist and as one of mtvU’s Freshman 5: Top 5 Bands for Summer. “We are extremely excited and absolutely honored to be asked to perform at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. It will be without a doubt, a monumental experience for us and one we will never forget,” the band said in a statement. “We’ve watched countless VMAs, and to have the opportunity to perform this year alongside some of the biggest artists in the world will be truly amazing. We can’t wait!” After gaining notice in 2009 by winning a contest to open for Kings of Leon, YTG will bask in their brightest spotlight to date, joining the list of previously announced performers Lil Wayne, Adele and Chris Brown . Additional performers and presenters will be announced soon. The five-piece’s “My Body” video has become an online sensation, racking up more than 1.3 million views on YouTube and appearing on MTV’s “Teen Wolf,” among other places. “Young the Giant is one of those bands you see live for the first time and walk away a superfan wondering when you can see them again,” said Amy Doyle, executive producer of the 2011 VMAs and MTV’s executive vice president of music and talent. “We are excited to give them our biggest stage and introduce them to a global audience of music lovers.” The band, which has been hitting the road hard over the past year with everyone from Minus the Bear to Neon Trees and Incubus, will play at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago this weekend. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. My name is Lee and this is My Bieber Experience. I saw Justin…

My name is Lee and this is My Bieber Experience. I saw Justin many times so I will quickly go over each! The first time I saw Justin was at his concert in LA on Febuary 14/09. I was all the way at the front and started to feel a bit dizzy. I ended up fainting and a bodyguard picked me up. It ended up being Kenny, which made things better! I then saw Justin at his VMA performance at the Nokia theatre. I  also went to his book signing on October 31st and met him. When I went to up to him, I couldn’t talk because I was that speechless. We took the picture, then he grabbed my arm and was like “Thank You, I love you” and than I walked down the ramp. Justin has also RT’ed/followed me on Twitter! On February 8th, I went to the Never say Never premiere at the Nokia theatre. That was the best experience EVER and I didn’t even meet him! WHY? Because I met Pattie, Justin’s grandparents, Usher, Willow & Jaden, Sean Kingston, and so many other celebs! On Febuary 9th Justin showed up at my movie theatre! It was pretty epic and also really cool cause I saw Justin 2 times in two days! Then on February 12th I went to watch ‘Never Say Never’ across the street from the Staples Center and Justin was at rehearsals for the Grammys. He showed up to that too! Then another day I was at Universal Studios for the day, and Justin just happened to be there shooting Next 2 You! I only saw his feet. Lastly, on July 11th I met Justin Bieber at the movie theater next to my house! I was at work and ran out of work to go meet him! It was amazing because we were talking for like 3 minutes! I also met his dad Jeremy. I’m really thankful for all these experiences, I hope every belieber meets him. All you gotta do it BELIEVE! NEVER SAY NEVER!!! -@ForeverBeliebrs More here: My name is Lee and this is My Bieber Experience. I saw Justin…

Chris Brown Video Director Calls VMA Noms ‘Crazy’

Colin Tilley tells MTV News it’s ‘really cool’ to see clips he helmed for Breezy and Justin Bieber getting awards-show nods. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts Chris Brown Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Colin Tilley has been having a heck of a year directing videos for Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Diddy-Dirty Money and Justin Bieber. Now, the California native finds two of his works nominated for the 2011 VMAs . Tilley’s clip for Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now” is up for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Collaboration, while his video for Justin Bieber’s “U Smile” garnered a nod in the Best Male Video category. “It’s crazy to see the videos that we’ve been doing getting awards, actually nominations in general, from the VMAs. It’s pretty amazing,” Tilley told MTV News on Tuesday when we visited the set of Wiz Khalifa’s upcoming “No Sleep” video. “As far as the hip-hop [category], ‘Look at Me Now,’ in general, is an amazing song. I remember when I got that song, I was like, ‘Jeez, this is a hit right here. This is just going to win some awards,’ as soon as I even I heard the song,” Tilley recalled of the vid that features both Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes. “The video just naturally and very seamlessly came together and we created something that I think is really cool.” While the director has worked most frequently with Brown — directing a number of his videos, including “Deuces,” “She Ain’t You” and “No BS” — Tilley also built a nice working relationship with Bieber after directing his 2010 visual for “Never Let You Go.” ” ‘U Smile’ was a very special video because I got to see Justin grow up. So we definitely went for this cinematic, stylized feel that really just showcased him as an iconic artist, as an icon in general,” the lens master said. “That was a really special experience. I remember the night before he had some award and he came to the set and he was really feeling himself. It was awesome.” You can vote for general VMA categories, including Best New Artist , by visiting VMA.MTV.com or m.mtv.com on your mobile phone. Kanye West, Robyn, More: The Other Videos Of The Year

Before the VMAs air live August 28 at 9 p.m. ET on MTV, we shine a spotlight on some lesser-known clips. By James Montgomery Kanye West Photo: Flanigan/ FilmMagic Last week, the nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards were revealed in a live special that featured plenty of surprise guests (like multiple-nominees Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Tyler, the Creator) and just as many actual surprises. Perhaps nowhere was the latter more apparent than in the Video of the Year category, which saw Perry’s “Firework” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” grab noms ( as predicted ), but also featured a trio of rather unexpected inclusions: Mars’ “Grenade,” the Beastie Boys’ “Make Some Noise” and Tyler’s “Yonkers.” In fact, though they’re all worthy selections, this year’s Video of the Year category might best be remembered for the clips that didn’t make the cut. And we’re not just talking about high-profile vids like Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” or Britney Spears’ “Till the World Ends” either. There were plenty of videos that wowed us in 2011, from artists both big and small. And after some rather zesty debate in the MTV Newsroom, we’ve compiled some of our favorites. Have a look at our picks for the Other Videos of the Year. Arcade Fire, “The Suburbs” A stirring, somber clip that’s part political treatise (the perils of colonialism, the erosion of civil liberties, etc.), part social commentary (the steady advance of adulthood, the preponderance of the past) and all compelling. It’s part of a larger film from director Spike Jonze and the band. Proof that sometimes the best artists actually do make the best art. Battles, “Ice Cream” A collection of seemingly random images — Karate! Some dude drinking milk! Bowling! A girl licking a doorknob! — tossed in a blender and whirled into a seizure-inducing syrup. The end result is a blissed-out, kinetic trip, and while it doesn’t make an ounce of sense, when paired with Battles’ spastic strut, it almost does. Almost being the operative word, of course. James Blake, “Limit to Your Love” A clip that’s as sumptuously simple as the track it backs, “Limit to Your Love” is little more than scenes of urban malaise — a darkly lit apartment, a decadently unmade bed, a decaying wooden floor — but its true power lies in the wonder it creates within those confines. Appliances limp to life, fruit hovers in the air, and a churning sea appears out of thin air. Like Blake’s music, there’s magic in the minimalism. Kanye West, “Monster” The disclaimer at the beginning states that “Monster” is “an art piece and it shall be taken as such,” but as is the case with pretty much everything Kanye does, it’s not that simple. Because while some decried the clip for its (frankly pretty brutal) misogynistic leanings — and with the abundance of half-nude women, fully deceased women, who can blame them? — few could deny that “Monster” is also a jarring, compelling, decidedly dark masterstroke. Deeply troubling torture porn or totally realized work of art? Probably both. Manchester Orchestra, “Simple Math” The year’s most brilliant, beautiful (and quite possibly best ) video, “Simple Math” twists time and space — the whole thing plays out over the time it takes frontman Andy Hull’s truck to spin violently off the road — into a M
