Real-time integration of Twitter with the live show resulted in 9,200 tweets per minute about Lady Gaga alone. By Terri Schwartz MTV’s VMA Twitter Tracker Photo: MTV Sunday’s Video Music Awards became an interactive experience unlike any before it as fans took to Twitter and sent approximately 2.3 million tweets during the East and West Coast runs of the show. Not surprisingly, the woman who swept the awards show was the most talked-about celebrity on Twitter: Lady Gaga was the subject of more than 9,200 tweets per minute, which was more than half of the total tweets being sent about all of the artists being tracked by MTV’s Twitter Tracker . The largest measure of success for MTV Mobile’s Senior Vice President Michael Scogin was the real-time integration of Twitter into the main show, which is something that other awards shows, like the Emmys and ESPYs, have tried but have not been able to capitalize on as successfully. Because of the resounding success of the Twitter Tracker, Scogin expects that other programs will look to MTV in the future to set the standard for integration between live awards shows and social networking. “MTV knows how to create an immersive pop culture spectacle, and Twitter is the best way to see how the world responds moment by moment,” Chloe Sladden, director of media partnership at Twitter, said. “MTV’s bleeding-edge integration fused the story of the audience’s real-time excitement into the story of the VMAs itself.” This year’s show also caused almost double the tweet volume of last year’s VMAs, which is impressive considering Sunday’s show didn’t have as controversial a surprise moment as Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech last year. The show also marked a big increase from when the Twitter Tracker was used at the MTV Movie Awards earlier this year. There, the most discussed moment of the night — Tom Cruise and Jennifer Lopez’s dance onstage — only clocked in at 1,800 tweets per minute. Overall, the artists tracked generated an average of 15,000 tweets per minute. Following Lady Gaga in popularity were Cher with an average 7,100 tweets per minute, Eminem with 5,000 tweets per minute, and Rihanna with 4,700 tweets per minute. Rounding out the top 10 were Ke$ha, Paramore, Taylor Swift and Kanye West. Even more impressive than audiences simply tweeting about the VMAs on Twitter were the additional interactive elements implemented during the show. Gabi Gregg, MTV’s first-ever Twitter Jockey , asked Twitter users during the pre-show to start a trending topic, #ifbiebermetgaga, which immediately jumped in popularity and ended up being one of the top 10 U.S. trending topics of the night. Gaga met the members of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network last week in Washington, D.C. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards with discharged soldiers from the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage You have to hand it to Lady Gaga . In addition to being a record-setting winner at Sunday night’s Video Music Awards , the international pop icon is a woman of conviction. Case in point. Last Tuesday, during the Washington, D.C., stop on her Monster Ball Tour, Gaga, a longtime gay-rights advocate, told her team that she wanted to meet with some members of the U.S. Armed Services who had been discharged because they are openly homosexual. Gaga was interested in learning more about the recent push to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy instigated by a California judge’s ruling last week that the Clinton-era military rule was unconstitutional and a vote by the House to repeal the legislation. “We met her before the show last week and told her our stories, and that’s when she said she wanted to do more,” said David Hall, 36, a former member of the Air Force who was booted out in August 2002 after a female cadet told his commander that he was gay and in an relationship. When confronted, Hall said he told his commanding officer he had no comment, but “he took her word for it over mine,” and Hall, a five-year veteran, was discharged. “We talked to [Gaga] for a bit and she said, ‘It would be great if I could bring you to the VMAs,’ ” he said. A longtime Gaga fan, Hall was ecstatic about the idea, but said it seemed unlikely that they could pull it off on such short notice. But when you’re Lady Gaga and you have 13 VMA nominations, it seems anything is possible. “I just kept thinking, ‘How can we get this together? Can we do it that fast?’ ” Hall said. “To my surprise, we were able to pull it off.” Hall and three of his cohorts — Katie Miller, Stacy Vasquez and Mike Almy — ended up walking the white carpet with Gaga and chatting with MTV’s Sway before they took their seats right behind Gaga in the Nokia Theatre in some of the most primo spots in the house. Hall has been working with the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network ( SLDN.org ) since 2006, helping the advocacy organization push to have “Don’t Ask” repealed. He said even with all the work he’s been doing for the organization, having Gaga spread the word to her 6 million Twitter followers and millions of VMA viewers was a huge boost. “I’ve done tons of media over the past four years … but I knew she would reach out to her Little Monsters and tell them about the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask’ on the white carpet and [it would have a huge impact],” he said. “You couldn’t ask for a better person to do it. She’s very genuine. It’s not some ploy to get attention. She really wanted to know about the repeal and why we need to get rid of ‘Don’t Ask.’ ” Though President Clinton had campaigned on the promise to allow anyone to serve in the military regardless of sexual orientation, the DADT policy was implemented in 1993 as a compromise gesture with Congress. It bars military officials from asking service members to reveal their sexual orientation, but also mandates that they could be discharged for offering the information themselves. It has long been criticized by the LGBT community over claims that it has led to harassment of service members, investigations based on rumors, and a double standard based on the military’s code of honesty and integrity. To date, more than 14,000 service members have been fired under the law. Gaga’s decision to use the VMA platform to publicize the attempt to push the repeal of “Don’t Ask” through — a commitment President Obama made during his campaign and which he has repeatedly said is his goal — came at just the right time, according to Hall. “The Senate is just coming back and we’re hoping that they will pass something this month,” he said, noting that Democratic control of Congress could possibly be weakened if Republican candidates score key victories in the November elections, which could set the repeal process back once again. “We were telling her that it is very important to speak out on this now,” Hall said of SLDN’s message to Gaga, who paid for the service members to fly out to Los Angeles for the VMAs. In addition to their swank seats and walk down the carpet, Hall said the organization members met with Gaga as she was prepping for the show earlier in the day Sunday to go over talking points. They also were invited to attend the post-VMA party put on by Gaga’s Interscope Records label, where they chatted with Mother Monster and her actual mother, Cynthia Germanotta. Hall’s highlight? “She gave us a shout-out during the acceptance for her first award,” he said. “And the interview with Sway on the white carpet … But every time Lady Gaga won, it was great. And when she won Video of the Year, I loved her meat outfit .” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. ‘We did it together and we are just getting started!!!’ Bieber tweets to his fans. By Josh Wigler Lady Gaga after the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: twitter.com/ladygaga “Woke up … had a good breakfast … got a smile on my face … everyone is feeling good … it’s finally here.” “It,” of course, refers to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and the speaker in question is none other than “Baby” singer Justin Bieber . On Sunday, Bieber — who was nominated for Best New Artist — tweeted to his legions of Twitter followers to express his excitement over the impending awards show. “Regardless of what happens, I’m lucky to have the greatest fans ever,” he wrote . “So thank you!” By the end of the night, Bieber had more than luck and his fans on his side — he also had a Moonman to call his own. “Wow. What?? Are you kidding. What!!?!” an ecstatic Bieber tweeted immediately following his win for Best New Artist . “Can’t stop smiling!” Bieber offered his thanks to a wide range of supporters, from his mother to his manager, Scooter Braun, to legendary martial artist and actor Chuck Norris . The singer acknowledged that he was likely leaving someone out, so he simply decided to thank “everybody.” “Biggest thank you in the world to the greatest fans in the world,” he wrote. “We did it together and we are just getting started!!!” Of course, Bieber wasn’t the only musician lucky enough to leave the Nokia Theatre with a shiny new trophy. Lady Gaga , for instance, went home with a walloping eight awards, including Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Video of the Year. “Too much poetry tonight,” Lady G tweeted , along with a photo of herself , after the show was over. “But u love u, + I love I, + we were #bornthisway.” 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto was equally grateful after winning the Best Rock Video award for “Kings and Queens.” “An unforgettable and amazing night,” he tweeted . “We are the luckiest band in the world to be able to share our lives with all of you.” Sadly, not everyone was able to claim victory at the VMAs. Drake, who lost Best Hip-Hop Video to Eminem, ended the night with his head held high despite the loss. “Thank you for all the love tonight,” he told his Twitter followers. “I had the time of my life.” Hayley Williams of Paramore had a similar outlook, despite losing Best Rock Video and three other awards for her collaboration with B.o.B on “Airplanes.” “Even though we didn’t win, our time was up on that stage,” Williams tweeted . “We had the best time performing. So we still won!” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Drizzy says the idea to channel the Rat Pack came from his earlier VMA promo. By Shaheem Reid Drake performs at the 2010 VMAs on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Drake has become a wise man in his 23 years. He knows that when a great idea crosses his path, he shouldn’t turn his nose up at it. Drizzy was approached by MTV a few months ago to make a promo for the 2010 Video Music Awards . In the VMA commercial, Drake is suited and booted and as smooth as Frank Sinatra. “Really, it came from the [VMA] campaign,” Drake said on Friday afternoon, explaining the inspiration for his VMA performance with Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz . He was in his dressing room at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles and had just finished rehearsing with Swizz and 30 beautiful models. “The campaign let me sort of have a Sinatra moment. I got so many compliments. ‘You look great in a suit.’ And ‘the way you move, you exude that same confidence.’ I was like, well, it would be silly for me to stray from something that great and do a whole hip-hop performance. Let’s just make the campaign our performance.” Hence the snazzy threads and club feel on Sunday night. On Friday, he wore jeans and a black tee. In between takes he looked down from the stage and cracked jokes with one of his managers, Cortez Bryant. During one break, he even kicked a freestyle off the mic. You could hardly hear him, but he seemed to be feeling his rhymes. Later, Drake also told us he was feeling Old Blue Eyes’

America was faced with a very important decision last night: Watch Don Draper swim laps at the YMCA while delivering a haunting inner monologue about life or tune into the 2010 Video Music Awards. If you have any self-respect, you chose the former viewing option, but a sea of you masochistic little monsters probably parked your television on MTV to see Chelsea Handler unleash one untrained white dove from her nether region. Because that was the least confounding moment arising from the Nokia Theater last night, Movieline has decided to answer some of the other questions that you undoubtedly shouted at your television during last night’s 2010 VMA s.

She even sings the chorus of upcoming title track after winning Video of the Year. By Kara Warner Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: WireImage Three cheers to Lady Gaga for following through with her promises! When Gaga picked up the biggest award at the Video Music Awards on Sunday night (September 12), Video of the Year for “Bad Romance,” she came through on an earlier vow that she would reveal the title for her new album if she won the coveted award. “I promised that if I won this, I would announce the name of my new album,” Gaga said, a bit overcome with the emotion of it all. “It’s called Born This Way. ” She then wowed the crowd even further by singing the chorus to the yet-unreleased title song. Gaga has teased a few details of the album , calling it the “absolute greatest work” she’s ever done. “I’m so excited about it,” Gaga said. “The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it’s utter liberation. I’m on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that’s what I’ve done.” The superstar also has yet to reveal what producers she’s working with. “I will never tell, because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them,” she said. “So all I can say is that nobody knows who they are. They’re all new.” Regarding potential guest artists who may or may not appear on the project, when we caught up with Akon on the VMA white carpet just before the show, he revealed a few details about his studio time with the Lady, but not any specifics about the sound. “Now that, that’s something I need her to describe,” Akon said. “If I describe it,” he began, mulling over whether e should reveal anything, then reconsidered: “No, no, just let her describe it, trust me.” He went on to say that Gaga is an icon, plain and simple. “She’s the biggest artist ever, next to MJ,” Akon said. “And that is in three years. So you can imagine 10 years from now, 20 years from now. She’s amazing, man.” What are you expecting from Gaga’s next album? Share your thoughts in the comments! ‘Performing in dress shoes for the first time’ gave the ‘Fancy’ MC pre-performance jitters, he admits. By Shaheem Reid Drake at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage LOS ANGELES — You can’t be the epitome of cool, and then land on your face or keister. Drake had a classy yet energetic and exciting performance Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards . While walking the white carpet leading up to the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, Drake stopped to hug and talk to Justin Bieber, and then watched Nicki Minaj perform “Your Love,” and “Check It Out” with will.i.am. Drizzy revealed to MTV News the primary thought that would be going through his head before taking the VMA stage. “Don’t fall. That’s the biggest thing, especially since I’m performing in dress shoes for the first time tonight,” he said. “So ‘don’t fall’ is my biggest thing. Other than that, man, it’s just really about, the stage is so vast. You gotta come out, you gotta shine. You gotta own it and you gotta have fun. You gotta smile, you gotta make people at home feel that they are right there with you having fun. That’s it really. Other than that, I wanna see other people be great. Hopefully take home an award. I worked really hard on that video,” he said of “Find Your Love,” which was up for Best Male Video, along with the Best Hip-Hop Video nominated “Forever.” Drake didn’t win any Moonmen at the 2010 VMAs, but he won the crowd over with “Fancy.” Everyone stood on their feet for Drake, Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz. The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. From a design by Alexander McQueen to her ensemble made of meat, Gaga didn’t fail to disappoint in the fashion department. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga may have worn more outfits at the 2009 VMAs, but this year she wore a little dress made of meat. So, if the fashionistas of the world were wondering if Gaga could top herself in the fashion department , the answer appears to be yes. For her first outfit of the night, when Gaga hit the VMA white carpet and already won two of her eight VMAs , she was wearing an Alexander McQueen outfit that consisted of taffeta, a feather Mohawk, a Renaissance art design and her famous “Bad Romance” McQueen lobster claw heels. And Gaga thanked McQueen in her acceptance speech for Best Female Video for his fashion contributions to the video. Later on, Gaga donned a very large black dress complete with a cone-bra-like structure and a plastic Mohawk headband. The dress was difficult for her to walk in and required help from several burly men to make her way to the stage to accept her Moonman. She told the crowd, “I didn’t really quite think all the wins through. This outfit is too heavy to walk in.” The dress (and bag and hat) that will certainly have everyone talking is her “meat” dress, which she wore when she won Video of the Year for “Bad Romance.” The dress was an obvious homage to the PETA-criticized bikini Lady Gaga recently wore for Vogue Hommes Japan. Earlier this week, celebrity stylist Robert Verdi predicted that Gaga would be in a fashion category all her own on VMA night, particularly after last year’s costumes. “I think that when you have to compete with yourself, it’s very difficult, and at some point you have to completely evolve and become something other than what people know you to be,” he explained. “But this year, with 13 nominations, I think were gonna find Lady Gaga in competition with herself to come up with a whole array of costumes and changes that continue to reinforce this idea that she’s a force to be reckoned with.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.
