Lady Gaga’s VMA Triumph, Behind The Scenes

MTV News was backstage when Gaga celebrated her Video of the Year win. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga backstage at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Moments after “Bad Romance” won the award for Video of the Year — and moments after she announced the title of her upcoming album, Born This Way — Lady Gaga walked off the Video Music Awards stage, arm-in-arm with Cher and tried very hard to fight back tears. She succeeded (to varying degrees), and as she descended the staircase, Moonman in one hand, clutch in the other, Gaga didn’t look like the biggest pop star on the planet. Instead, she looked humble, emotional and downright human (or, you know, as human as anyone wearing a dress made of meat could be). It was a rare moment, for sure, one only a host of people — a few stagehands, a publicist or two, Cher and, well, MTV News — were privileged enough to see. And in a second, it was over. Gaga and Cher embraced, and she was whisked away, into a waiting elevator, to the dressing-room area beneath the Nokia Theatre. And only down there did Gaga cut loose. Because as soon as the elevator doors parted, she strode down the carpeted hallway, and though she was still dabbing tears away from her eyes, she was also laughing now, too, almost as if she couldn’t believe what had just happened: that she had won Video of the Year, that she had announced the title of her new album (and sung the hook from the presumptive title track) in front of an audience of millions, that freaking Cher had handed her the award. The 2010 VMAs were, in a lot of ways, her crowning moment. And she no doubt realized that, because a smile broke out across her face, and her army of stylists emerged from her dressing room and broke into a loud round of applause. We followed as close as we could, but soon, the hallway was filled with Gaga’s team. They stood on either side of the hallway, still clapping, whooping loudly. And Gaga cheered along with them, and then disappeared into her dressing room. Someone in her entourage shouted, “Big f—ing night,” and they couldn’t have been more right. The door closed behind them, two beefy security guards assumed their positions outside it, and Gaga’s celebration began. You could hear it halfway down the hallway. And it was much deserved. It was a big f—ing night, indeed. The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Eminem’s ‘Not Afraid’ Takes Best Hip Hop Video

After performing, Slim Shady jetted to New York to continue tour. By Rochell D. Thomas Eminem performs during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage When MTV’s 2010 Video Music Award nominations were announced last month and Eminem earned eight , he was not pleased, complaining that the September 12 scheduling of the awards ceremony scratched the quickly spinning record that is his tour schedule. “Apparently, MTV doesn’t care that I have two massive stadium shows on the other side of the country the day after the VMAs,” he said. “F me, right?” Well, we wouldn’t exactly say that. Not that it matters. Apparently, Slim Shady could only spare enough time to open the VMAs. After his medley performance of “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie” (for which Rihanna joined him onstage), he jetted, literally — leaving the Nokia Theater to catch a red-eye flight back to New York for his Monday-night gigs. Guess he didn’t think he’d win. Which he did. Marshall Mathers’ clip for “Not Afraid” beat both rap royalty and newcomers to take the Best Hip Hop Video award. His competition: “Airplanes” by B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams), Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz’ “On to the Next One,” Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness” and the mega video that was expected to take this category’s cake — the Hype Williams-directed “Forever,” featuring Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem, himself. Since Em had left the building, Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, who presented the award, accepted on his behalf. “I’m going to take it to Columbia,” she joked. B.o.B, Hayley Williams Perform Rousing ‘Airplanes’ At VMAs

Bruno Mars also joins pair onstage for a medley of ‘Nothin’ on You,’ ‘Airplanes’ and Paramore’s ‘Only Exception.’ By James Dinh Hayley Williams and B.o.B perform during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic They may have met for the first time on Saturday, but B.o.B and Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams had real chemistry when they performed their hit “Airplanes” at Sunday’s Video Music Awards . Joined by Bruno Mars, B.o.B and Williams performed a medley that also included “Nothin’ on You” and Paramore’s “Only Exception” at the 2010. Beginning with this spring’s anthem “Nothin’ on You,” Mars crooned his way through the track’s chorus until an energetic B.o.B appeared on the other side of the Nokia Theatre stage. “Give it up to my homie, B.o.B,” Mars screamed. After bringing the song to a pause, B.o.B transitioned into his other 2010 smash, “Airplanes.” Decked out in a white ensemble, Williams walked through a misty entrance as she met the MC at center stage. “Can we pretend that airplanes/ In the night sky, are like shooting stars?/ I could really use a wish right now/ Wish right now, wish right now,” she belted. The duo sang smiling and dancing slightly side by side, as a lightning backdrop flickered in the background. With the song coming to an end, Williams walked to the back of the stage as “Only Exception” began to play. Joined by her band, the frontwoman grabbed a mic. As she sang the track, a sea of golden light bulbs were suspended above their heads. During rehearsals for the big performance on Saturday, MTV News asked B.o.B what fans could expect from his and Hayley’s VMA set. “I think just the fact that me and her are performing on the stage at the same [event] is gonna be spectacular,” he told us. B.o.B and Williams were nominated for Best Collaboration Video for “Airplanes,” but lost out to Lady Gaga’s “Telephone,” featuring Beyonc

Kanye West’s VMA Finale Sets Twitter Ablaze

Yeezy debuts ‘douchebag’-inspired new track and generates 4,300 tweets per minute at 2010 Video Music Awards. By Terri Schwartz Kanye West performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It shouldn’t be too big of a surprise that Kanye West ‘s closing Video Music Awards performance, during which he debuted his new song, got MTV viewers talking on Twitter. West easily topped MTV’s Twitter Tracker , generating more than 4,300 tweets a minute and making it clear his appearance was one of the biggest moments of the night. Even after the awards show ended, the Nokia Theatre crowd could be heard chanting West’s name. Gabezacchaeus tweeted, “thank you @kanyewest for making a song about me,” referencing West’s ode to all the jerks in the world. “Kanye West = genius,” JagneShaw added. Jay_West_FSG tweeted, “I toast my fellow a–holes in the name of Kanye West,” and JayClarkSOD kept it simple with “Kanye west is da sh– #thatisall.” West took to his own Twitter account at noon on Sunday (September 12), writing, “I wish my Mom was here but I know she’s looking down. I want to make her so happy today.” Mj_obsessed_xo responded to that post after Kanye’s performance, tweeting, “You have my heart again .

2010 VMAs: Lady Gaga Scores, Taylor Swift And Kanye West Vent

Performances from Justin Bieber, Eminem/Rihanna and others also steal the show. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage With 13 nominations, there was no way Lady Gaga was going home empty-handed at Sunday night’s (September 12) MTV Video Music Awards . And when the international pop/fashion icon stepped up to accept her sixth award of the night, for Video of the Year, she did what she always does: broke off a piece for her legion of fans by teasing the name of her upcoming album. On a night when Kanye West seemingly came all the way back from music jail with yet another eye-popping performance that put most (or at least some) of last year’s stage-crashing antics to rest, Taylor Swift appeared to answer Kanye’s bum-rush with some lyrical barbs of her own, and everyone from Justin Bieber and B.o.B to Drake and Nicki Minaj made their VMA debuts. In the end, though, the night belonged to Mother Monster. Gaga got the night started early with a pre-show win for Best Dance Video for “Bad Romance” and Best Collaboration for “Telephone” with Beyonc

Eminem Wins Best Male Video For ‘Not Afraid’

The Detroit MC opened VMAs with a triumphant performance of the comeback anthem. By James Dinh Eminem performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage After a triumphant opening performance of his VMA-nominated “Not Afraid,” Eminem took home the Moonman for Best Male Video at the 2010 Video Music Awards . Although it was a major win for the Detroit MC, Em wasn’t able to accept the award as presenters Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj revealed that he had already left the building and was on a plane to New York. “All right you guys, sit down. Eminem just left the building. He had to catch a flight to go back to New York to perform with Jigga man,” Minaj said referring to the two rappers’ Home and Home tour, which resumes on Monday on Tuesday. In the Rich Lee-directed clip, Eminem takes a journey through the streets of Newark, New Jersey, where he reflects on his personal tribulations. The rapper opened the Video Music Awards with a performance medley of his two smashes: “Not Afraid” and “Hate That I Love You” alongside surprise guest Rihanna. The rapper is also up for several other awards, including Best Hip-Hop Video (Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem “Forever”) and the coveted Video Of The Year (“Not Afraid”). Taylor Swift’s Kanye West-Focused VMA Set Lights Up Twitter

Reactions to her emotional performance were mixed. By Terri Schwartz Taylor Swift performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Taylor Swift ‘s surprise VMA performance Sunday night (September 12) had everyone talking, though reactions ranged from supportive to irritated that Swift would perform a song about Kanye West — who infamously interrupted her acceptance speech at last year’s show — more than a year after the incident occurred. Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ Nabs Best Pop Video

The win adds to the pop superstar’s dominating Moonman haul at 2010 Video Music Awards. By Rochell D. Thomas Lady Gaga accepts the Best Pop Video award during the 2010 MTV Video Music Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lady Gaga howled as she was escorted by a few burly handlers up to the podium to accept the Best Pop Video Moonman — her fourth trophy of the night at the 2010 VMAs . Having changed into a mountainous black strapless gown topped, this time, by spiked Mohawk peaks, the singer needed help getting to the stage, and once there she let out a “Yeah!” The cast of “Glee,” who presented the award, gathered around her. With 13 nominations and the prospect of several trips to the stage, Gaga added, “I didn’t really quite think all the wins through. This outfit is too heavy to walk in.” In the Best Pop Video category “Bad Romance” was, once again, up against serious competition, including B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” (featuring Bruno Mars), Beyonc

Chelsea Handler Opens VMAs With Lindsay Lohan Skit

‘Don’t embarrass me,’ Lohan warns host in pre-taped segment. By Kelley L. Carter Lindsay Lohan and Chelsea Handler onscreen at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: WireImage As expected, MTV Video Music Awards host Chelsea Handler opened with a bang. In a pre-taped clip, the comedienne makes her way to the stage (and gets slapped on the butt a couple of times along the way). She meets up with troubled actress Lindsay Lohan, who pokes fun at her own struggles with sobriety before giving Handler a bit of advice: “Don’t embarrass me.” It went over pretty well, as did Handler’s monologue. She dropped down to the stage Lady Gaga-style, wearing a house on her head and a glittery outfit. She punched a clicker and the garage went up, then she dipped her head out and joked, “Sorry. That’s as far as we got in rehearsal.” Her outerwear was removed, revealing a short black dress. She told the crowd, “My plan was to stay sober the entire show, but, in an interesting twist, I am as high as a kite. That’s the last time I do a prayer circle with Snoop Dogg.” Handler talked about the last time a woman — Roseanne Barr — hosted the VMAs, which was in 1994. “Justin Timberlake was in the Mickey Mouse Club pretending he wasn’t having sex with Britney Spears. The Situation was just a classy way to call teenage pregnancy. And Justin Bieber’s mom had just given birth to her 401k plan.” Handler also had a bit of advice for her audience of celebrities: Be bad. “I want to encourage everyone to be on their worst behavior. And I’m not just talking about some predictable awards show girl-on-girl kiss. We’ve all seen that. I’m over that,” she said. “I want to turn this mother out. Get your tongue ready. I want one shoved some places it’s not supposed to be. I’m talking about you, Taylor Swift.” She also chided multiple VMA winner Gaga a couple of times, talking about her fashion choices in music videos. “I’m taking this job very, very seriously tonight. I did my homework and I watched all the videos. The one thing I discovered is that Lady Gaga and Beyonc
