Bruno Mars To Take Plea Deal In Drug Case

Grammy-nominated singer will pay a fine and complete community service to get charge dismissed. By Mawuse Ziegbe Bruno Mars Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage Bruno Mars is set to take a plea deal in a drug possession case he picked up after getting caught with cocaine in Las Vegas in September, according to The Associated Press. The “Just the Way You Are” crooner will pay a fine of $2,000 and complete drug counseling and 200 hours of community service. As long as Mars, born Peter Hernandez, does not get into any other scrapes for a year, his record will be conviction-free. Clark County District Attorney David Roger and Mars’ lawyers David Chesnoff and Blair Berk said the singer is due in court in Las Vegas on February 4 so he can waive an evidentiary hearing to later plead guilty and be sentenced in state court. “Bruno is very appreciative he is being given this opportunity as a first offender not to suffer any conviction and instead to have his charge dismissed,” Berk told the AP. “He is taking all of this quite seriously.” Mars ran into trouble last fall at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel when a bathroom attendant noticed Mars with a “baggy of white powder substance.” The singer tested positive for cocaine at the time of his arrest, and reportedly said he “did a foolish thing and has never used drugs before.” Putting the cocaine bust behind him isn’t the only good thing coming up for Mars. The singer/songwriter is up for seven Grammy nominations, and will hit the stage at the big show. After the nominations were announced in December, MTV News caught up with Mars and his writing and production crew, the Smeezingtons, — who have put their touch on hits like Cee Lo’s “F— You” and B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” — and he said he was amped for the nods. “But the fact [is] that we worked so hard this year. In a little tiny shack studio, we’d have B.o.B in there [writing] ‘Nothin’ on You’ with us, Cee Lo writing ‘F— You’ with us. The fact that it’s being acknowledged by the Grammys is incredible. It’s really making us feel like we did something. We’re being acknowledged by the biggest.” The Grammys will air live on February 13. Related Artists Bruno Mars

Exclusive: Eminem To Perform At The Grammys

Other performers for February 13 show will be announced Thursday. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage Consider Eminem ‘s comeback complete. The superstar MC will take the stage at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards next month in Los Angeles, MTV News has learned exclusively. The Recording Academy will officially announce Em and other performers on Thursday; Pitchfork reported Wednesday (January 12) that Arcade Fire will also be performing at the awards show. The performance is the latest in a line of accomplishments for Eminem since he released Recovery, which is up for Album of the Year. The Detroit lyricist scored a pair of #1 singles from the album with “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna. Those songs helped Em earn 10 Grammy nominations . It’s quite a turnaround from his last project, Relapse. That album debuted at #1 but received mixed reviews, despite winning Best Rap Album at the 2009 Grammys. With Recovery, however, Em has returned to form. Now, he’s set to take center stage at the prestigious event. Twelve months ago, he joined Drake for the then-upstart’s “Forever” performance. But for this year’s telecast, the multiple Grammy winner will take top billing. He’s already been featured in the show’s promotional campaign . A touching 30-second spot showcases Em’s musical legacy , from the loss of his friend, fellow MC Proof, to his struggles through drug dependency and his rise back to the top of the hip-hop game. There’s no question the veteran MC will be the star of the festivities. In December, when nominations were revealed, the rapper led the pack, besting Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, who received seven and six nominations, respectively. The Grammys air Sunday, February 13, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. What song are you hoping Eminem performs at the Grammys? Let us know in the comments! Eminem Ruled 2010 — And Here’s How

Rapper rose from ashes of disappointing album to top of the charts and 10 Grammy nominations. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage It’s fitting that Eminem is planning to return to the big screen next year in the “8 Mile”-inspired boxing film “Southpaw.” Because like Rocky after he was counted down and out so many times in that famous pugilist movie serial, Marshall Mathers seemed like he’d run out of gas in 2009 only to come storming all the way back, and then some, in 2010 to post one of his biggest and baddest years to date. At a time when younger artists like Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Lady Gaga are relying on social media, a dizzying blitz of promotional appearances and concerts, and a nonstop hype machine to keep their careers stoked, Eminem’s path back to the top of the musical heap was decidedly old-school: He released a great album in Recovery that emotionally connected with fans thanks to some of the most hook-heavy songs of his career while maintaining an elusive persona that kept them guessing. “On Recovery, he was really able to tap into the emotive 2002 stuff that people loved in ‘8 Mile,’ ” said Complex Editor in Chief Noah Callahan-Bever. “And I think that the fact that he’s not tech-savvy or any of that stuff really doesn’t hurt him because he’s able to cultivate a little bit of a mystery about himself and his comings and goings. That exclusivity creates more value to his limited presence.” While songs like mega first single “Not Afraid” and the inescapable Rihanna hookup “Love the Way You Lie” were getting wall-to-wall spins at radio, Em made only a few promotional appearances, played just a handful of dates — including the lauded Home and Home shows with Jay-Z — and managed to keep that air of inscrutability about himself while putting up the best sales figures for any album released in 2010. The less you saw of him, the more you wanted to see him. “I think it kind of benefited because [of] the whole backstory behind the album,” Julianne Escobedo Shepherd, former executive editor of The Fader, said about the drama surrounding Slim Shady’s second comeback attempt after five years in drug-induced exile and 2009’s so-so reception for Relapse. “And his comeback from a bad album … the whole thing with the pills, and I think it kind of lent to his mystery. There’s something to be said for rappers who have a trillion Twitter followers but at the same time you kind of don’t want to be able to say whatever you want to your favorite rapper. I think that he kind of kept his integrity in the way that he needed to as an older rapper.” Putting out a barrage of cameo verses has been the go-to move for up-and-comers like Drake and Nicki Minaj as a way to establish their brand. But Marshall borrowed that same new-school page and made it feel classic by being very selective about which songs he lent his voice to. And, almost without exception, every choice he made was an instant classic, from his killer verse on Drake’s “Forever” to a solid duet with Lil Wayne on “Drop the World,” some tasty bars on B.o.B’s “Airplanes” and a nod to the new kids on the block on Nicki’s “Roman’s Revenge.” Most of his peers seem to believe that more is more — more endorsements, more products, more interviews, more guests on their tracks — even as Em came off as the wily veteran who picks his high-percentage shots while the rest of the squad is firing off endless jumpers. “When Eminem went away, the feeling of like, ‘Well, that whole market’s going away. All those people, they’re just dispersing off into the ether and no one’s gonna be ready for him when he’s ready to come back,’ ” said New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica of the excitement that greeted the rapper’s return to form. “And what I think you realize this year is that all those people are like sleeper cells and all got activated. All of a sudden, ‘Oh, Eminem’s back. It’s OK to buy his CD again. I didn’t have anyone I feel like I wanted to buy for the last two or three years; now I feel like I can commit to Eminem.’ ” What also became clear this year, Caramanica said, is that unlike flash-in-the-pan pop rappers or mainstream acts whose audiences don’t grow with them as they mature, Eminem’s fans have been loyal, even as he’s picked up a whole new generation of followers thanks to his more accessible new songs. The evidence of that trend can be seen in the fact that, months after its release, Recovery was still routinely hanging around the top 20, if not top 10, on the Billboard albums chart, an indication that new fans were being brought onboard every week. That slow and steady, measured approach clearly paid off, as Em won two VMAs (off of eight nominations) in September and ended the year by loading up with a leading 10 Grammy nominations and a #2 spot on MTV News’ Man of the Year countdown. You can be sure when the Grammys are handed out in February, Marshall’s name will be mentioned a few times, because if there’s anything the Recording Academy (and, let’s face it, all of America) loves, it’s a comeback. Eminem Announces Radio Broadcast Of Home And Home Show

The rap superstar’s satellite radio station to air one of his and Jay-Z’s recent Detroit concerts ‘as a special treat’ on New Year’s Eve. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem and Jay-Z perform in Detroit’s Home and Home concert Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Eminem has had a big 2010, from being named MTV’s Hottest MC in the Game to scoring a slew of Grammy nominations for his critically revered Recovery . As a result, the iconic rapper announced on Monday (December 20) via his satellite radio station, Shade 45, that he would broadcast one of the Home and Home concerts he and Jay-Z played in Detroit earlier this year. “As a special treat, for the listeners and the fans who missed the ‘Home and Home’ concerts with me and Jay-Z, Shade 45 is gonna air my performance from the Detroit show this New Year’s Eve at 8 p.m.,” Em said. The pair played four shows, two in each artist’s hometown, Detroit and New York . The gigs, which featured a number guest performers, went off without a hitch and were praised by fans and peers alike. Dr. Dre credited the event with inspiring him to finally put the finishing touches on his long-awaited Detox project. “Being on the stage with Eminem and Jay-Z was one of the most incredible feelings I’ve felt in a long time,” Dre said in September. “It inspired me, it made me want to hurry up and get back in the studio and put more effort and more work into my own project.” “If you weren’t there, this is what it sounded like,” Em said, dryly, while joking with Shade 45 general manager Rob “Reef” Tewlow. “It felt great, man,” Eminem added about the experience. “It was crazy. The energy of the crowd. Just me being home, you know? I don’t know, man — it’s a good thing. Blessed.” Do you plan on tuning in to Em’s Home and Home broadcast on New Year’s Eve? Lady Gaga Named Billboard’s Artist Of The Year

Gaga becomes just the seventh woman ever to take home the magazine’s highest honor, which she dedicates to her fans. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images On Thursday, Lady Gaga capped off a tremendous 2010 by being named Billboard magazine’s Artist of the Year, becoming only the seventh woman ever to take home the honor since the magazine began handing it out in 1981. And in true testament to her meteoric rise to the top of the charts, Gaga’s Artist of the Year nod comes just one year after she was named Billboard ‘s Top New Artist, making her only the third act ever — after Chris Brown and Whitney Houston — to accomplish that feat. Gaga beat out heavyweights like Taylor Swift, Eminem and Lady Antebellum to take home Artist of the Year, which, according to Billboard, was bestowed upon her “thanks in part to the chart performance of her first two albums, The Fame and The Fame Monster, which rank at numbers 4 and 13 on the year-end Top Billboard 200 Albums … [and] four singles from that album, [which] appear on the Hot 100 Songs roundup, led by ‘Bad Romance’ at number 8.” The other women previously named the mag’s Artist of the Year are Swift (2009), LeAnn Rimes (1997), Alanis Morissette (1996), Mariah Carey (1991), Houston (1986) and Madonna (1985). The Billboard honor comes exactly one week after Gaga picked up six Grammy nominations , and early Friday morning, she took to her Twitter account — remember, she had been digitally dead for nearly a week — to dedicate her accolades to her fans. “Monsters have 6 Grammy nominations and Billboard award [for] ‘Artist of the Year,’ ” she wrote. “Thank you for fighting for artistic freedom and self-invention.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Drake To Host 2011 Juno Awards

Toronto MC will return to his hometown to helm the Canadian music awards show. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Chances are good that if you check out an awards show in 2011, it will be hard to escape Drake. The Young Money MC already has four nominations for the 53rd annual Grammy Awards under his belt, and the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences just announced he’ll be hosting the 2011 Juno Awards. “I am beyond honored to be hosting this monumental Juno Awards in the greatest city on Earth,” Drizzy said in a statement. “I want to bring a youthful energy to the show and encourage people to be excited about what Canadian music has to offer. See you all at the show.” “Drake has made incredible strides on the national and international music scene in the past year and exemplifies the next generation of Canadian artists. We’re thrilled to have him host the 2011 Juno Awards in his hometown of Toronto,” added Melanie Berry, president and CEO of CARAS and the Juno Awards. “People are still buzzing over his performance last year on the Juno Awards, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store this time around!” The Toronto native is no stranger to the Junos, having scored four nominations and two trophies. The Thank Me Later lyricist also hit the stage alongside fellow Canadian pop export Justin Bieber at last year’s awards. However, Drizzy won’t know if he’ll have to pull double duty as both a host and award contender until February 1, when the 2011 nominations are announced. The show, which will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the awards, will air live on CTV on Sunday, March 27. News of the hosting gig comes around the same time as the announcement of Drizzy’s four Grammy nods. The singer/MC is up for Best New Artist, Best Rap Album for Thank Me Later, Best Rap Solo Performance for “Over” and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “Fancy” with T.I. and Swizz Beatz. ‘Glee’ Star Lea Michele Celebrates Grammy Nominations

The show’s cast is up for soundtrack and pop group awards. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Lea Michele Photo: MTV News Week after week, the “Glee” cast has been delivering catchy covers of songs that people already love, so it’s not surprising that in addition to big sales and ratings numbers, they’re starting to receive music industry accolades as well. And on Wednesday night, they managed to snag two Grammy nominations , not just for the obvious category — Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media — but also for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals for their cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” “That’s so cool!” star Lea Michele (Rachel) said of the kudos. But she almost missed the news of their nods, since she was traveling to New York to attend the Billboard Women in Music Awards on Thursday (December 2). “I had to turn my phone off last night when we were taking of to come to New York, so up until the last minute I was texting my castmembers like, ‘What’s going on?’ ” she told MTV News on the red carpet of the Billboard event, where she was honored as a Triple Threat. “And then when I landed, I had, like, four from all of them like, ‘We got nominated!’ ” Funny enough, they are up against Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” and Paramore’s “The Only Exception,” both of which have been reimagined on “Glee.” (Also nominated in the category are Maroon 5 for “Misery” and Sade for “Babyfather.”) And though the soundtrack nod is nothing to sneeze at, Michele has a soft spot for the Journey cover that was featured in the show’s season-one finale. “I’m so happy, especially that it’s for ‘Don’t Stop Believin’,’ which is for the whole cast, so that we all get to go,” she said. “That’s just awesome.” Which “Glee” cover do you think deserved a Grammy nomination?
