ESPN anchor Stuart Scott has passed away. Scott had been battling cancer for several years. He was 49 years old. At the 2014 ESPY Awards held in July, the longtime SportsCenter host won an award for perseverance that had been named in honor of legendary North Carolina State basketball coach and fellow cancer fighter Jimmy Valvano. Scott’s moving speech had the audience in tears and remains a potent reminder of the eloquence and wit that made him a fan favorite at ESPN for over 20 years: Stuart Scott ESPYs Speech A fighter until in the end – in the most literal sense – Scott had been engaging in intense MMA training sessions between harrowing bouts of cancer treatment. His trainer tells TMZ that Scott refused to allow any of his sparring partners go easy on him and had earned a reputation at his gym as a “battle horse.” Joining the network in 1993, Scott was instantly a perfect fit for ESPN’s flagship show. Catchphrases such as “Boo-yah,” and “Cooler than the other the side of the pillow” made Scott a household name among sports fans and are still often quoted to this day. But it may be Scott’s words at last year’s ESPY Awards for which he would most like to be remembered: “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.” Scott is survived by two daughters. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of a man who will have a place in the hearts of a whole generation of sports fans. Celebrities We Lost in 2015 1. Out…of…pocket… Black Man Fired After Complaining About Eric Garner Joke A North Carolina man is out of a job after he says he complained about a racist joke about Eric Garner. WRAL reports: UPS employee in Raleigh says he was fired in retaliation after admonishing his supervisor for making a racially insensitive remark. Joshua Boyd, 22, said Friday that he had worked only three weeks at the UPS Customer Center, loading boxes onto trucks, when the encounter with his boss happened Tuesday. As the two worked side by side, Boyd eyed the supervisor’s chocolate bar. “I said, ‘Hey man!’” Boyd recalled. “I look at him, and he looks back at me and says, ‘Yeah, I’ll bring you down like they did that guy in New York.’” Boyd said he didn’t appreciate the reference to Eric Garner, a black man who died after being placed in a chokehold by a white police officer in Staten Island, N.Y. A grand jury’s decision not to indict the officer resulted in nationwide protests, including in the Triangle. “I quickly addressed it, so I said, ‘Hey man, that’s not funny. Can you not joke on that particular matter,” said Boyd, who is black. He said the supervisor, who is white, immediately apologized. But Boyd said the supervisor laughed about the chokehold joke two more times to other employees. Boyd said he felt like he was in a hostile work environment, so he went home. He returned the next day and had a meeting with his supervisor’s boss. He said he was told to return Thursday and meet with Human Resources personnel, who fired him. Boyd said he did not overreact to the remark. “If I ask you not to say it one time, firmly – I didn’t joke back and smile and say, ‘Hey man, don’t say that again.’ I looked at you straight and asked you not to say that again,” he said. He said UPS cut him loose “to protect their employees.” Boyd said he plans to take his complaint to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. SMH…we smell a lawsuit. Somebody’s about to get PAID.

Fanny’s baby daddy now wants to be in their teenage daughter’s life… Father Of Fantasia’s Teenage Daughter Files For Custody Via Rumor Fix reports: A rep for the singer tells RumorFix exclusively that a lawsuit has been filed in Meckleburg, North Carolina by Barrino’s baby daddy Brandel J. Shouse. We have been provided an official statement via the former American Idol winner’s rep that reads, “Fantasia Barrino is currently involved in a Child Custody, Visitation, and Child Support legal proceeding filed in Mecklenburg, North Carolina. The lawsuit was filed by Me. Brandel J. Shouse, the father of Fantasia’s 13-year-old daughter Zion. Despite living in North Carolina, Mr. Shouse had very little personal contact with Zion and has provided no financial support for her. The case will not be heard until 2015. Fantasia is confident that legal process will move forward smoothly and that the Court will make a decision that is in the best interest of Zion.” Despite the baby daddy drama, the R&B artist is keeping her head up high, her rep tells RumorFix in a statement, “Fantasia hopes that her fans understand the sensitive nature of these matters and that she cannot share with them all of the details at this time. Fantasia also knows that all of her ‘Baby Mama’ fans know exactly what she is going though and will support her as she continues to take wonderful and complete care of her daughter.” The 30-year-old dated Shouse for five years but reportedly called it quits in 2003. The singer is currently in a serious relationship with Kendall Taylor. Do you think Fantasia’s baby daddy should get custody after being absent for so long in her life?? Matthew Gibson, a 55-year-old North Carolina man, finally came clean about a 1997 murder he committed after receiving some texts from Walmart. Say what now? Gibson, 55, showed up in Arizona’s Winslow Police Department, where Det. Alicia Marquez discovered him “sitting in the lobby, scared and sobbing.” “He wanted to talk about crime he committed more than a decade before,” Martinez said, and he recalled meeting a woman one night in Bullhead City, Ariz. They went back to his trailer, where she became “loud and obnoxious” and he asked her to leave. When she refused, Gibson “bludgeoned her to death.” Using a Maglite flashlight, he killed her just like that, then threw her body into the Colorado River, where he buried his secret, seemingly for good. Until Walmart texted. And called. And even sent a hard copy of a letter saying that a prescription for Anita Townshed was ready for pickup, anytime. The actual woman he killed was Barbara Brown Agnew, but Gibson didn’t know that, and was convinced that Townshed was his old victim. He thought someone was monitoring his phone calls and had placed “a contract on his head,” so he hurried up and confessed out of guilt and fear. Gibson, a former drug addict, found religion years ago, his attorney said. “He felt bad,” Ron Gilleo said of his confession. “It was weighing on him.” As for whether this sort of confession is unprecedented? “We see a lot in this line of work,” Marquez told the Charlotte Observer. “He was in fear for his life.” That being said, the case wasn’t just cold, it didn’t exist. Until he confessed, and asked that he be allowed to plead guilty to manslaughter immediately. It’s unclear if he has begun serving his sentence, but he’s definitely earned his place among the strangest criminals and news stories we’ve covered … Strange But True News Hall of Fame 1.
