‘I was not missing the VMAs for nothing,’ Pauly D tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Sammi, Ronnie, Pauly D and Vinny Photo: MTV News As Hurricane Irene bore down on the East Coast and the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards heated up on the West, “Jersey Shore” stars Snooki, Vinny, Deena and Sammi, hopped a last-minute private jet from New Jersey to Los Angeles. Nothing was going to stop them from missing the VMAs. “We had to get out here for the VMAs,” Vinny told MTV News hours after touching in Los Angeles. “MTV did whatever they could to get us out here. We wouldn’t miss it for the world.” His pal Pauly D, meanwhile, had been safely kicking back in Oklahoma City after an earlier brush with the hurricane in North Carolina while touring with Britney Spears . “Irene got nothing on my blowout,” he declared, while acknowledging the storm poses a serious risk to the public. “I was nervous. This storm’s no joke,” he said. “Immediately I texted Vinny, because I didn’t think we were going to make it. … I thought I was going to have to fill in for everybody. I can’t talk for everybody. I talk a lot. But it was no joke, and I was not missing the VMAs for nothing. Seriously, I was coming here. I didn’t care how I was coming here, but I was going to make it.” It’s no doubt going to be a big night for the “Shore” kids. The highly-anticipated episode showcasing the resolution of Ronnie’s dustup with the Situation is set to air at 7 p.m. ET immediately before the VMA Pre-Show . And as soon as “Jersey Shore” ends, the cast will be making their way down the VMA Pre-Show black carpet and settling into prime seats for the main event . But while they kick back and enjoy all the VMA craziness, they’ll be thinking of their friends and family back home. “Our prayers go out for everyone on the East Coast,” Vinny said. “We’re looking out for them, but I think they’re going to be all right.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. That Empire State of Mind is nice and all but it’s time to get the heck out of dodge folks! Hurricane Irene is coming and officials in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have already declared a State of Emergency in their states. Mayor Bloomberg has also asked something of New Yorkers that has never been asked before — he wants them to evacuate, especially if there home lies in a coastal area. Yup that means Lower Manhattan too! With Hurricane Irene speeding relentlessly toward the East Coast, officials announced plans to evacuate low-lying areas in New York City and shut down the sprawling subway and transit system. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg ordered a mandatory evacuation — something he said the city had never done before — of coastal areas in all five boroughs, including all of the Rockaways; Battery Park City and the financial district in Lower Manhattan; and Governor’s Island. The evacuation covered 250,000 people in and around what the city calls Zone A low-lying areas who, the mayor said, should get out before the storm swept in. “You only have to look at the weather maps to understand how big this storm is and how unique it is,” the mayor said at a news conference, “and it’s heading basically for us.” Underscoring what he and other officials said was the seriousness of the situation, President Obama granted a request from Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York to declare the state a federal emergency even before the hurricane arrived, according to the White House. And the mayor’s announcement prompted a cascade of cancellations for Saturday and Sunday: Broadway shows; the Mets’ games against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field; performances by the Dave Matthews Band on Governor’s Island; an outdoor film festival of operas at Lincoln Center, among many others. Officials said the subway shutdown was prompted mainly by wind estimates that suggested the hurricane could rock subway cars where they run above ground. The commuter rail lines that serve Long Island, Westchester County and Connecticut will also be shut down, as will NJTransit operations in New Jersey. NJTransit will suspend service at noon Saturday. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York said that a half dozen bridges — including the George Washington Bridge, the Robert F. Kennedy Triboro Bridge, the Throgs Neck Bridge and the Whitestone Bridge — would be closed if winds reached 60 miles an hour for more than a short time. Officials decided to go ahead with the shutdowns and evacuations, which they had first mentioned as a possibility at a City Hall briefing on Thursday, because, the mayor said, “Irene is now bearing down on us at a faster speed than it was.” As he stepped up the plans on Friday, the city was already evacuating hospitals and nursing homes in low-lying areas. State officials continued arrangements for coordinating emergency services and restoring electricity if the storm does the kind of damage many fear. Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey said that all lanes of 28-mile stretch of a major highway in Ocean County would go in only one direction — westward — beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday to help speed the trip away from Long Beach Island, which is connected to the mainland by only a single bridge. Those preparations came as states of emergency remained in effect in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The mayor said that 91 evacuation centers and shelters would be open by 4 p.m. Friday for people who could not stay in their homes. The mayor had said on Thursday that the city was ordering nursing homes and hospitals in those areas to evacuate residents and patients beginning at 8 a.m. Friday unless they received special permission from state and city health officials, among them the city’s health commissioner, Dr. Thomas A. Farley, who, the mayor noted, was chairman of the community health sciences department at Tulane University when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005. That evacuation order covered 22 hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities for older people. The mayor said city beaches would be closed on Saturday and Sunday and would remain closed “until they can op safely.” “Please, please, please, don’t go in the water,” the mayor said. “Tides will be much stronger than people can cope with.” In Connecticut, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said the state was considering widespread precautionary shutdowns of highways at midnight Saturday. He urged residents in areas that had “ever experienced flooding” to take steps to leave those areas by midnight Saturday as well. Mr. Malloy said officials were preparing for “tremendous tree damage” and the loss of electricity across the entire state. “Not just for a few hours,” he added at a briefing on Friday. “Days and weeks.” Can you imagine? Lights out for weeks!!! This storm is the real deal. Please everyone, if you live in one of the areas affected take these warning seriously and make sure you have a plan in place in case disaster strikes. Source
‘Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off,’ Best New Artist nominee reveals. By Kara Warner Big Sean Photo: MTV News Rising star and Best New Artist VMA nominee Big Sean might be riding high these days, but in the new episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, the G.O.O.D. Music MC reveals a not-so-starry moment from his teens. “When I was 17, I got a brand-new 2005 Chevy Impala. I was one of the only people with a new car so I was definitely enjoying it, having fun,” Sean recalled. “One day outside my house, you know sometimes when you’re blocked in, you have to move cars out the driveway and move them back in? I was just trying to hurry up and do it, so I left my car running, hopped out my and car hopped into another car to pull it into the driveway,” he explained. “Within that 20 to 30 seconds, somebody hopped in my car and drove off. I’m like ‘Mom! Mom! Mom! Somebody stole my car!’ I was thinking, ‘Damn, I f—-d up.’ ” The Detroit native said that he and his mother called the police, but due to the number of carjackings in the area, their request wasn’t considered a high priority. “I had a tracking device on my car,” Sean said. “And we still couldn’t find my car.” One 2005 Chevy Impala aside, the “Finally Famous” lyricist hasn’t experienced the loss of any other prized possessions. For now he is focused on his music, and his first-ever VMA nomination. “Man, I was hype as hell,” Sean told MTV News upon learning of his nomination for Best New Artist . “I called my mom at like midnight. I was in Charlotte [North Carolina] the night when I found out, and I called my mom and I woke her up,” he revealed. “I’m excited. Hopefully, it’s gonna be a good night.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring VMA nominees Big Sean, Tyler, the Creator, and Kreayshawn — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Group lashed out at late night host over his jokes about an Al Qaeda leader. By Gil Kaufman David Letterman Photo: Ray Tamarra/Getty Images David Letterman is currently on hiatus, but that hasn’t stopped the late night legend from angering some people with comments he made before taking off for summer vacation. According to reports from SITE Intelligence Group, which scans the Internet for terrorist activity, Letterman has been marked for death by a jihadist group for comments the “Late Show” host made on June 5 about Al Qaeda leader Ilyas Kashmiri, who was killed earlier this summer during a U.S. military strike in Pakistan. The threat on the Shumukh al-Islam web forum, which called for followers to “cut the tongue of the lowly Jew and shut it forever,” said that Letterman — who is Protestant — should be punished for his comments about the man who had been considered a possible replacement for late terror leader Osama bin Laden. “He showed his evil nature and deep hatred for Islam and Muslims, and said that Ilyas Kashmiri was killed and he joined bin Laden,” wrote someone calling themselves Umar al-Basrawi on the site, according to Entertainment Weekly . “We ask Allah to paralyze his tongue and grant the sincere monotheists his neck.” The FBI is reportedly investigating the threat and Letterman has been informed of the posting. The incident appears to have been inspired by a joke Letterman made in which he announced the death of Kashmiri, which involved the comedian making a slashing motion across his throat. “So Al Qaeda picked a succesor to Osama bin Laden and his name is Ilyas Kashmiri,” Letterman said during his monologue. “Well, guess what? He was blown up by an American drone. It wasn’t going to work anyway because they got off to a rocky start with this guy … He botched up the story of Paul Revere.” “He said that Kashmiri was killed in an airstrike in Pakistan … then, he showed his evil nature and deep hatred for Islam and Muslims, and said that Ilyas Kashmiri was killed and he joined bin Laden. Then the despicable one put his hand on his neck and demonstrated the way of slaughter!!” wrote al-Basrawi.
‘Jay-Z doesn’t owe me a verse because I signed to him,’ Cole tells a room of writers after playing his debut album for them. By Rob Markman J. Cole (file) Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage J. Cole has had his whole life to make his first album, and for Cole World: The Sideline Story , the Roc Nation rookie draws on a combination of his past failures and victories to tell his tale. A select number of writers were invited to Roc the Mic studios in Manhattan on Wednesday night to hear the North Carolina MC’s debut, which is due out September 27. Though the album is almost complete, the guests were asked not to report any song titles or lyrics because they are still subject to change. In many ways, Cole feels like an underdog, and on Cole World , he raps as if he may never get another shot. In a wrap-up speech delivered to his guests, he even compared himself to the character Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger from the 1993 film “Rudy.” In the movie, Rudy dreamed of playing football at the University of Notre Dame but faced immeasurable odds due to his small frame and lack of natural ability. It isn’t until the waning moments of the final game that Rudy is allowed to suit up and achieve his dream. Familiar previously released songs like “Work Out,” the Drake-assisted “In the Morning” and “Lights Please” anchor the album, which revolves around heartbreak, triumph and good old-fashioned storytelling. On one gut-wrenching track, which Cole produced himself, the rapper strikes a chord when trying to convince his pregnant girlfriend to abort their child. In the song’s second verse, he switches roles and rhymes as if he is a pregnant woman — singing in a higher pitch for effect. J revealed to the room that this song in particular had been completed even before he signed with Jigga in 2009. In fact, four of the album’s songs were holdovers from his early days. Cole produced most of the LP himself, though Danjahandz and NO I.D. both contributed. Although Drake appears on “In the Morning” and Trey Songz sings the hook on the album’s next single “Can’t Get Enough,” the record is light on featured guests. But what about Hov? One of the big questions surrounding the album has been whether Cole secured a featured verse from Jay-Z . The answer is no — well at least not yet. As of now, the rapper has until August 20 to turn his album in, so there is still hope for a last-minute collaboration from the God MC. If Jay does decide to lend his bars to Cole World, the rapper already has a track set aside — he’s actually left the third verse open just in case. If not, Cole doesn’t feel slighted but motivated. “Nobody owes me anything,” he told the crowd. “Jay-Z doesn’t owe me a verse because I signed to him.” No, Jay has given J. Cole something much greater: a chance to make his dreams a reality when the album is released on September 27. The guest verse is merely a bonus. Related Artists J. Cole
