Get Involved: Voter Turnout For Black Women Is A Major Key To Keeping Donald Trump Out Of The White House

Black Voter Turnout Is Imperative To Keeping Donald Trump From Being Elected President RawStory taken the liberty of breaking down exactly why it is SO important that each and everyone of us do our civic duty and cast our votes. All of us, but especially black women… As the Democratic nominating contest speeds up, African-American voters – especially women – have some tough, and influential, choices to make. South Carolina is the first primary where African Americans are the majority of Democratic voters, controlling 55 percent of the vote. That makes South Carolina a battleground for black votes, especially those of African-American women. We know that victories in early primaries are important. Later voters often pick their candidate based on early primary outcomes. The South Carolina primary is perhaps as important as the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries because it could create momentum in subsequent contests where black votes will help candidates win. The following statistics explains exactly how influential the black vote can be and how detrimental it can be for us if we don’t… African-American voters are the most loyal supporters of the Democratic Party. Their support for Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore was 90 percent in 2000. In 2004, they voted for John Kerry by 88 percent. Barack Obama won an all-time high of 95 percent in 2008. According to exit polls, black voters were 13 percent of the national electorate in 2008. They represented approximately one in every 4.25 Obama voters that same year. Sixty-five percent, or 15.9 million, of voting-age African Americans cast a ballot in the general election, compared to 66.1 percent of white citizens. But, the voter turnout rate among eligible black female voters was 68.8 percent – the highest of all racial, ethnic and gender groups in the 2008 American presidential election. Especially in southern states with large black voting-eligible populations – including South Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina and Louisiana – the black female voter outperformed in terms of registration and turnout. Since 1996, this gender gap has been consistently present. African-American women voted at higher rates than African-American men by a range of 7 or 8 percentage points in 2008. That rate was even higher – about 9 percentage points – in 2012, which is 6 percentage points higher than other racial groups. All this is to say that we, as people of color, HAVE to have the same level of enthsiasm about voting in November as we did in 2008 when Obama was running for his first term. Anything less than that will lead to all of us watching “President Trump” take the oath in 2017… Image via Shutterstock

Race Matters: HBCU ‘All-Stars’ Prove That Historically Black Colleges Are NOT Inferior To Predominately White Institutions

HBCU All-Stars Prove That Historically Black Colleges Are Necessary In America Thinking about attending a HBCU but heard some misconceptions about the experience ? The U.S. Department of Education recently announced the 2015 HBCU All-Stars, a group of undergraduate, master’s and professional students at historically black colleges and universities. U.S. News recently spoke with some of the 2015 HBCU All-Stars about common lies and misconceptions that some have about historically black schools and what it’s really like to attend one. Jamie Binns, junior at Talladega College: Binns didn’t always plan on going to an HBCU, but after getting into and later enrolling at Talladega College in Alabama, he’s grateful for the experience. “I would like to think that my HBCU has done well for me and has been able to afford me a lot of opportunities,” says Binns, who is president of his school’s student government association, a member of the track and field team and a member of the presidential honor society. He wants people to realize that historically black colleges can be just as challenging as any other. “An HBCU experience, or an HBCU education rather, is not inferior to a predominantly white institution,” says Binns. HBCUs have had prestigious alumni go out and do great things, he says. And he’s right. Some of these alumni, which come from various black colleges, include film director Spike Lee, author Toni Morrison and civil rights activist Jesse L. Jackson Sr. Angelica Willis, junior at North Carolina A&T State University: Before becoming an undergrad, Angelica Willis knew some of the professors at North Carolina A&T State University, where her mother also attended. When Willis arrived as a freshman, the school almost felt like home. “I love the family environment,” says Willis, who has a 4.0 GPA as a computer science major and mentors other students at the school. “It just seems so friendly and open.” Read more from the article HERE and discuss your thoughts on how HBCUs play a big part in the Black community in the comment section below.

Say Cheese!!! North Carolina Cop’s Photo With Man Who Tried To Stab Him Goes Viral But You Won’t Believe Why

Cop’s Photo With Man Who Tried To Stab Him Goes Viral A North Carolina cop’s uplifting Facebook photo showing his run-in with a man who tried to stab him last year has gone viral. Via NY Daily News : Raleigh Police Officer JD Boyd took to Facebook after randomly reuniting with a former suspect who nearly killed him, posting an image of the two new pals grinning side-by-side along with a touching message. “Almost a year ago this man and I were involved in a major altercation where he tried to stab me in the head and I nearly shot him,” he wrote in the post. “Today we ran into each other again.” The cop, who’s seen in uniform with his arms around an unidentified man, said he learned the man changed his ways after serving time in prison. “He now has a full-time job and has another son on the way that will be here in November,” Boyd wrote. “I was glad it ended well for us both that day and I am ecstatic now to learn that he has turned his life around and we can embrace as friends.” The post has gotten almost 190,000 likes and 66,000 shares since Tuesday. “No one is ever lost forever and as long as you continue to work to be a better version of yourself than you were yesterday things will work out eventually,” the officer wrote. A picture is really worth a 1,000 words!

Llama Gets Loose in North Carolina, Panicked Hilarity Ensues

Another llama just got loose in America. Six months after the country lost its collective mind over footage of llamas running wild in Arizona , a similar incident took place this week in North Carolina. According to the report featured here, a llama named Phantom broke free from his enclosure and hit the quiet streets of Buncombe County, flummoxing both local residents and reporters alike. Fortunately (for us), videographer John Boyle was on hand to capture the moment that Phantom moved from a golf course to a field, as we see him being chased by lurching and mostly helpless bystanders. Eventually, after THREE HOURS, the llama was apprehended and no person or animal was injured. That means it's okay to watch this footage and laugh. Enjoy!
