Beloved radio icon Casey Kasem passed away this morning at the age of 82. His daughter Kerri confirmed the news via Facebook, writing, “Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken.” Kasem is best known as the original voice of the American Top 40 countdown, and for millions of Americans, Kasem’s trademark voice is as much a part of the history of pop music as the songs themselves. Sadly, in his final days, a legal battle over Kasem’s care overshadowed the Detroit native’s inestimable contribution to the world of broadcasting. After a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease and dementia, Kasem was removed from life support earlier this week. In addition to his famous hit music countdowns, Kasem lent his voice to a number of famous cartoon characters, including Scooby Doo’s Shaggy – a part he played for over 40 years. In 1985, Kasem was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 2009 he retired from radio after nearly 60 years behind the mic.
