THG Asks, Answers: Who is Antwaun Cook?

With Fantasia Barrino having been released from the hospital following her overdose on aspirin this week (manager Brian Dickens says his client “has been lifted up by the outpouring of love and support from her fans”), celebrity gossip followers are left with one question: Who, exactly, is Antwaun Cook? This married man is at the center of the Fantasia drama, as a recent statement from the singer acknowledged an 11-month relationship him, one that definitely included matching tattoos and may have included a sex tape , at least according to Antwaun wife, Paula. Here’s what we can tell readers about Antwaun Cook : He met Fantasia while managing a T-Mobile store in Charlotte. The singer was interested in him because he was not in the music industry. “He’s just a regular dude,” she told People months ago. He’s an East Carolina University graduate and former member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He obtained his real estate license in 2006 and joined the firm Keller Williams Realty this month. Despite Fantasia supposed belief that Cook and his wife separated last year, legal documents confirm they only started living apart in June 2010. They also have two kids together. Barrino could also be in extra trouble due to the location of her residence: North Carolina is one of seven states that allows a party to sue a “home wrecker.”

‘I don’t think this is a career-breaker,’ Howard Bragman tells MTV News of apparent suicide attempt. By James Montgomery Fantasia Barrino Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images In the day since former “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino was rushed to a North Carolina hospital after an apparent suicide attempt, reaction from her fans has been mixed. Some have expressed their support for the singer, while others have criticized her for being “selfish,” given that she is the mother of a 9-year-old girl. While that criticism might seem harsh, it’s certainly par for the course, according to public-relations executive Howard Bragman, who has overseen the career rehabilitations of Isaiah Washington and Naomi Campbell. Barrino can’t worry about what some of her fans might think of her right now, he said, because she has to focus on her own health. And no matter how bad things seem right now, the forgiveness will come. “I think the number-one thing Fantasia has to do is heal. I think she has to get some psychological help, find out what brought her to this moment, and make sure it doesn’t happen again … that is number one,” Bragman told MTV News. “And once that’s under control, then you start to look at your projects on the horizon. You don’t give yourself this timetable. But assuming she’s well enough in a matter of weeks or months to promote her album or her projects, well, the reality is, we live in a very forgiving society. “We like rehab, we like rebirth, we like reconnecting with people,” he continued. “We’re willing to give people a second chance if they look us in the eye and [tell us] why they’re going on with their lives and why they deserve a second chance. I don’t think this is a career-breaker.” Speaking of that career, Barrino will eventually have to return her focus to upcoming projects, including a second season of her VH1 reality show “Fantasia for Real” in September and a new album, Back to Me, which is due August 24. When she finally does, she needs to prepare herself for an onslaught of questions about just what happened Monday. So the best possible strategy, according to Bragman, is to be proactive about things. “I think she’s certainly going to get asked the question about what happened. And if she were my client, I would do one or two very well-orchestrated interviews, possibly a print interview, a People magazine, and then a broadcast interview … and get it out there,” he said. “And then if you’re asked about it again, you say, ‘You know, I’ve really talked about that a lot, and I feel comfortable with what I said, and I’m here to promote my album’ to change the focus a little.” Bragman added that Barrino needs to take time for herself and only come back when she feels strong enough to do so. And when she does, he expects that her fans will welcome her back with open arms. “I think we go back to talent, and I think she’s got great talent, she’s got great heart and great spirit, and I think we want her to succeed,” he said. “I don’t think she’s one of those people we don’t want to see do well. … We’re on her side, and I think she’s going to feel the love when she goes back out there.” Where should Fantasia go from here? This Week’s Corrupt Cops Stories

In Tulsa, Oklahoma, one man was released from prison and another had charges dropped in a police corruption scandal that continues to fester. So far, 14 people have been freed from prison or had charges dropped in the scandal in which six former and current police officers have been charged in federal court with offenses including drug conspiracy, perjury, witness tampering and civil rights violations. Two men, former Tulsa Police officer John Gray and former US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Agent Brandon McFadden have already pleaded guilty and are cooperating with prosecutors. Gray admitted to lying on search warrant affidavits in the case of Hugo Gutierrez, who was released from federal prison last Friday. Gray also admitted stealing $10,000 from Gutierrez when he arrested him. Charges against Deon White were dropped July 29. His case is one of 53 associated with undercover Tulsa Police Officer Jeff Henderson, who was indicted July 20 on 58 counts of drug conspiracy, perjury, witness tampering and civil rights violations, federal court records show. The Tulsa World is keeping track of it all here. In Austin, Texas, a former Austin police officer went on trial Tuesday for having sex with a hooker while on duty and paying her with drugs. Scott Michael Lando faces charges of prostitution, delivery of a controlled substance, misuse of official information, and aggravated assault by a public servant for a series of incidents dating back to May 2006. This trial only deals with four prostitution counts and will feature the hooker, who will testify that Lando gave her drugs and other items in return for sex. Prosecutors already told the court Lando had access to drug dealers and got drugs from them. The state will decide later whether to move forward on the other counts. In Barboursville, West Virginia, a Western Regional Jail guard was arrested August 3 after getting caught in a sting by authorities. Nathaniel Shawn Johnson, 22, went down after the West Virginia State Police got a tip that he was bringing drugs and tobacco into the jail. They then used an undercover officer, who paid Johnson $300 after he agreed to buy and deliver Oxycontin and tobacco to the jail. He is charged with conspiracy and bringing a weapon onto jail grounds (he had a .22 rifle in his pickup). http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/2010/aug/11/weeks_corrupt_cops_stories added by: JackHerer

Fantasia Overdose Draws Sympathy, Criticism From Fans

Reactions to the ‘American Idol’ champ’s apparent suicide attempt are mixed. By Mawuse Ziegbe Fantasia Photo: Bennett Raglin/WireImage Fantasia Barrino’s apparent attempt to take her own life has sparked a range of reactions from the “American Idol” winner’s fans. On Monday, Barrino suffered a drug overdose after ingesting a mix of aspirin and a sleep aid. The singer was taken to a North Carolina hospital, and a police report listed Barrino’s condition as a “suicide/overdose.” In the wake of the singer’s recent troubles, fans have been divided over Barrino’s alleged suicide attempt. “This is so sad and reminds me of the people who win the lottery but their life falls apart afterwards,” Burker wrote on the “American Idol” fan website Rickey.org. “So many highs and lows in Tasia’s life. I’m rooting for ya babe!” Bfashion58 also expressed support for the troubled “Idol” champ. “My prayers are with Fantasia and her family,” the poster wrote. “What don’t break you will only make you stronger.” “Hope you’ll get better soon Fantasia!! I miss you!!” Chuckgirl2008 wrote on MTV.com. “UR n my prayers Tasia, keep ur head up!!!” Reginald Ready said. Many fans have sent Barrino well-wishes, but the singer has also been the subject of much viral vitriol. Numerous online commenters have blasted Barrino’s suicide attempt as a “selfish” move that would have left her daughter without a mom. “I’m sorry, but trying to commit suicide when you are a mother is probably the most selfish thing a person can do,” Max wrote on the Clutch magazine website. “I do not feel sorry for her, I feel sorry for her daughter.” “I’m sorry but I can not feel bad for Fantasia,” an anonymous poster declared on TheYBF.com. “The thought of her taking her life and leaving her DAUGHTER parent-less over some man is very selfish to [me].” Several fans have referenced Barrino’s reported relationship with a married man as the cause of her alleged suicide attempt. The singer was named in court documents filed last week by Paula Cook, the wife of Barrino’s supposed boyfriend Antwaun, charging that the two started a “covert adulterous affair” last August. The documents also allege that the duo filmed a sex tape, which precipitated the collapse of the marriage. “I find it hard to feel bad for her bc I believe she knew what she was doing,” another TheYBF anonymous poster wrote. “Not to sound heartless, but even if she didn’t know he was married [I’m] sure she found out along the way.” “As a married woman, it is tough to feel sorry for women like this,” Clutch Mag Online poster Maria wrote. “As a celebrity she needs to think twice before doing anything that could ruin her career. Plus why go after a married man when there are so many single men out there to choose from?” “Fantasia is a sorry excuse for a [woman],” another anonymous poster typed on TheYBF. “She got caught and now she’s trying to dig her way out and I have no remorse for her.” Barrino’s drug overdose was just the latest incident in a life that has been marked by incredible highs and devastating lows. The singer overcame sexual abuse, teen pregnancy and illiteracy to take the “American Idol” crown in 2004. Barrino went on to release the platinum debut Free Yourself and starred in Broadway’s “The Color Purple.” However, the star reportedly skipped more than 50 “Color Purple” performances, and one of Barrino’s homes went into foreclosure in 2008. Yet, in 2010, Barrino appeared to be enjoying a return to the spotlight with the hit VH1 show “Fantasia for Real.” She also recently dropped the single “Bittersweet.” Fantasia fans remain split over her recent issues, however. Some commenters, such as Itgirlstyle, insist that the public should have sympathy despite Barrino’s celebrity. “Nobody is perfect, and we have all have made mistakes/choices we aren’t proud of. The difference is, when celebrities make mistakes, it’s broadcast to the world and all of a sudden everybody is perfect and feel they have the right to judge and condemn,” the commenter wrote on Clutch. “Hold your head up, Tasia.” Share your well-wishes for Fantasia and her family in the comments below. Season-three ‘American Idol’ winner’s dad says she’s ‘doing fine’ after apparent suicide attempt. By Kara Warner Hours after reports surfaced that former “American Idol” champ Fantasia Barrino was admitted to a North Carolina hospital for a drug overdose after an apparent suicide attempt, Barrino’s father and manager have said the singer is already on the road to recovery. “She’s doing fine,” Joseph Barrino told RadarOnline.com from his home in Greensboro, North Carolina. Manager Brian Dickens confirmed reports that the cause of Barrino’s overdose was due to her ingesting too much medication, a combination of aspirin and a sleep aid. “Her injuries are not life-threatening. She was dehydrated and exhausted at the time,” Dickens told People magazine. “Fantasia is stable now. She will be released from the hospital soon.” The incident is said to be part of an ongoing investigation, and it comes just after Barrino was named in a court filing alleging that she was having an affair with Antwaun Cook, a married man.
