Online, Men Say Are Willing to Split Housework

en and women are both likely to take a gender-neutral attitude toward most job occupations, according to the preliminary results of an online test launched in February that will keep crunching the data on an open-ended basis. Some jobs, however–such as carpenters and prison guards–were still considered male preserves, at least by male respondents. “For the most part, men felt that both genders would be equally suited to most job positions we listed on the test,” said Ilona Jerabek in a phone interview. Jerabek is president of PsychTests AIM, the Montreal-based psychological assessments company that developed the 126-question test that takes around 30 or 40 minutes to complete. “Gender Roles: Are We Still Playing the Part?” provides a description of where people fall on the traditional-modern continuum in professional and personal life. Nearly 200 men and more than 300 women–their ages range from under 17 to over 60–have responded so far. Most have been Caucasians from North America. Surprisingly, men have so far been more willing than women to divide household duties with their partners and take on jobs beyond such traditionally male tasks as mowing the lawn and taking out the garbage. Garden Shed Home Offices Sprouting Up in UK

The backyard-shed-as-home-office idea is catching on in North America, but it is nothing compared to what is going on in the UK. There, they are being promoted as turnkey solutions that reduce commuting, save money for companies, and are being offered as fully outfitted workspaces, the cubicle of the 21st century. A new entry is from podSPACE ; Alex at Shedworking writes that “the pod comes with data/phone points… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Memorial Day 2010 And The Realities Of The Causes Of War

Memorial Day 2010 And The Realities Of The Causes Of War The day before Memorial Day I was engaged in an online debate about war. I was questioning the legitimacy of the war in Iraq when a serviceman posted a response where he felt insulted that I would be doing something like this on this weekend. And this was my response. “Jason it is because I honor your service as well as the service of the members of my family and all that Americans that are serving endless deployments in Iraq & Afghanistan as well as those who have died in other wars that I think we should honestly examine why we find ourselves nation building on the other side of the world. Maybe those people you encounter wouldn't be so glad to see you if we hadn't helped a brutal dictator like Sadam get and maintain power. After the Iranian revolution we encouraged and aided him in his brutal invasion of Iran. Power that included weapons of mass destruction that we know he used. That we knew were destroyed before we invaded. Maybe they wouldn’t be so glad to see us if we hadn’t tricked him into invading Kuwait and then left him in power while punishing the population. They’ve been so screwed over for the past fifty years they’d be happy to see anyone. Maybe if the western powers hadn't spent the first 60 years of the 20th century drawing up the map of the Middle East we wouldn’t be over there. These aren't conspiracy theories it's history. If we'd just let these people determine what their own countries and government should be (the right of self determination) you might not have to over there serving. For over one hundred years we have been exporting not our highest ideals to other countries but death and destruction in the name of unfettered capitalism. You can dress it up with whatever kind of holier than thou platitudes that you want but it all boils down to money. If you can offer me any proof that what I’m saying isn’t true than you should thank me and all the other loyal Americans for using our freedom of speech this to speak up on your behalf. Especially this weekend. We speak up for you and get crapped on for it and a whole media industry full of chicken hawks makes a fortune out of attacking out patriotism. And I’m also speaking up for my soon to be 18 year old son who I’m sure the war machine will soon be needing once we get into Iran & N. Korea. And it will be the perfect trick when the Dems bring back the draft. Don’t take my word listen to people like General Butler, Dwight Eisenhower, and Ron Paul. It’s all a cynical adaptation by the corporations to use the religious/political philosophy called manifest destiny. It provided for the violent expansion of white people across a broad swath of North America in the first hundred years following indolence. And once we hit California we just kept going. This is just history it’s all there if you look around. If I’m wrong about any of this by all means enlighten me. I’d love to hear an intelligent response. So peace my brother and thanks for yours and all the others who serve(ed). If you’re in combat keep your head down and your powder dry. Stay safe and come home. We need you here.” So far after the response from the right has been a thundering silence. And I’ve found that usually to be the case. Once you get past the platitudes and childish insults that is the usual response the right wingers don’t have anything else to base their position on. I’m not taking part in a conspiracy theory by saying most of the wars that have been fought over the last one hundred years haven’t been necessary and have been fought to improve the wealth and power of the major corporations. It’s just history and this video is filled with voices from our history maybe we should pay closer attention and ask ourselves is it worth it? Or isn’t there a better way? Isn’t this worth at least discussing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4zy2n7V4To added by: MindsiMedia

Hayley Williams’ Twitpic Account Hacked

Topless picture of Paramore singer was posted to her Twitter on Thursday. By Gil Kaufman Hayley Williams Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Paramore’s Hayley Williams is the latest star to have stolen compromising photos posted on the Internet without her permission. The topless twitpic of the redheaded singer staring into the camera was posted on Thursday and sent to Williams’ more than 600,000 followers before getting removed. But at that point, it was too late, as the photo made its way to a gossip sites all across the Net within hours. The bummed-out frontwoman reacted to the hack on Thursday night, tweeting , “Well … my night just changed drastically. Got hacked.” Williams recently shot the video for B.o.B.’s “Airplanes,” one of MTV News’ candidates for summer jam of 2010. Stupid American Tourists & the State Dept That Loves Them

Gunmen kidnapped two American tourists in Yemen. They’ve apparently just been released. But who goes “touring” in Yemen? Did they not hear about this dude named Anwar Al-Awlaki, who is behind many recent Islamic terrorist attacks and attempted attacks on U.S. soil. His call to kill Americans might be a hint: Don’t. Go. To. Yemen. Dummies. These people are idiots. And I bet they’re either Muslims, themselves, or really, really delusional left-wingers who still see world-class armpits like Yemen as “exotic” locales for touring, and still romanticize Islam (while they hate all other religions except Buddhism). “Oh, look, Amber. Check out those charming headscarves. How quaint. Ditto for that ornate beheading knife, which I’m sure is only used on sheep.” Then, there are Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd, and Josh Fattal–the three faux-journalists stuck in jail in Iran. The three are really pan-Islamist, anti-Israel far-lefties living in Damascus, Syria. One of them, Fattal, is supposedly Jewish. What kind of dumbass Jew from America goes hiking in Iran? Only an imbecile-owitz. Fattal and the other two knew better. If they’re living in the torturistan of the Assads (Syria), they knew full well not to go “hiking” in Iran. But they did anyway. Now, Iran and the mothers of these three Islamo-pandering stooges are pushing a “prisoner exchange deal” with the U.S. The Sarkozy idiots in France just did one, last week, releasing an Iranian arms dealer and refusing to extradite him to the U.S. for his criminal nuclear parts purchases (on behalf of Iran), in exchange for some far left French academic who went to Iran (another “tourist” who should have been left to rot there). And finally, there are Laura Ling and her sister, Lisa Ling. They’ve written a book about Laura Ling’s imprisonment in North Korea. Who told her to go there? If you go to Kim Jong-Il’s antithesis of Wonka World, you know what to expect. You’re gonna be imprisoned and tortured. She chose to go. But, instead of saying: you went at your own risk and you knew the consequences, so there’s nothing we can do, the U.S. did biz with Kim. Bill Clinton was interrupted from his position as Chief Justice of the Hawaiian Tropic bikini contest to negotiate and rescue these two faux-heroines. Now Laura and Lisa Ling’s book is all the rage on Oprah (for whom Lisa Ling reports regular propaganda), People Magazine, and everywhere else. My favorite headline is the People Magazine blare: “ESCAPE FROM NORTH KOREA.” Um, here’s a tip, People: no one escaped. The U.S. State Department and Bill Clinton repeatedly cajoled and posed to get these two spoiled, whiny women out of North Korea. added by: crystalman

Tensions Rise on Korean Peninsula

BREAKING: NKorea cuts ties with South, raises war rhetoric!

UPDATE: Tue. 05/25 By HYUNG-JIN KIM, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 36 mins ago NKorea cuts ties with South, raises war rhetoric! “SEOUL, South Korea – Relations on the divided Korean peninsula plunged to their lowest point in a decade Tuesday when the North declared it was cutting all ties to Seoul as punishment for blaming the communists for the sinking of a South Korean warship. The announcement came a day after South Korea took steps that were seen as among the strongest it could take short of military action. Seoul said it would slash trade with the North and deny permission to its cargo ships to pass through South Korean waters. It also resumed a propaganda offensive — including blaring Western music into the North and dropping leaflets by balloon. North Korea said it was cutting all ties with the South until President Lee Myung-bak leaves office in early 2013, the official Korean Central News Agency said in a dispatch monitored in Seoul late Tuesday. The North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification said it would expel all South Korean government officials working at a joint industrial park in the northern border town of Kaesong, and South Korean ships and airliners would be banned from passing through its territory. The North's committee said it would start “all-out counterattacks” against the South's psychological warfare, and called its moves “the first phase” of punitive measures against Seoul, suggesting more action could follow.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100525/ap_on_re_as/as_skorea_ship_sinks ————————————————————————————————————– WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Monday announced plans for two major military exercises off the Korean peninsula in a show of force aimed at North Korea, which has been blamed by investigators for a deadly torpedo attack on a South Korean warship. The White House called U.S. support for South Korea “unequivocal” and said in a statement that President Obama had directed military commanders to work with the South “to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression.” North Korean leaders have denied responsibility and warned against any retaliation, but Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday blamed the North for the crisis. “We are working hard to avoid an escalation of belligerence and provocation,” Clinton told reporters in Beijing, where she was to press China to support diplomatic action against its neighbor and ally, North Korea. “This is a highly precarious situation that the North Koreans have caused in the region.” U.S. officials hope a united international response, coupled with a display of military might, will deter North Korea's neo-Stalinist regime from ratcheting up tensions. An international team of investigators last week blamed the North for the March 26 sinking of the South Korean corvette, the Cheonan. Forty-six South Koreans died aboard the ship, which investigators say was ripped in two by a torpedo. The sinking was South Korea's worst military disaster since the Korean War, which started 60 years ago and ended in a cease-fire in 1953. But no formal peace treaty was ever signed, and more than 28,000 U.S. troops remain stationed in the south, a critical regional ally. Until Monday, the Obama administration had been intentionally vague on how it might respond to the report blaming North Korea for the attack, out of a reluctance to stoke tensions. But on Tuesday, the Obama administration shifted gears, taking its cue from South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who announced Monday that he would cut all trade with the impoverished North. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100524/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_obama_korea added by: onemalefla

Teacher in trouble after students don Klan robes

At this moment in history this teacher did this? And in Atlanta? Our kids are doomed. ATLANTA (AP) — A North Georgia teacher is on administrative leave and could lose her job after she allowed four students to don mock Ku Klux Klan outfits for a final project in a high school class Thursday, administrators said. The sight of people in Klan-like outfits upset some black students at the school and led at least one parent to complain. Catherine Ariemma, who teaches the advanced placement course combining U.S. history with film education, could face punishment ranging from suspension to termination, Lumpkin County School Superintendent Dewey Moye said Monday. Ariemma has spent nearly six years teaching in the rural county about 75 miles north of Atlanta. She told The Associated Press Monday that students were covering an important and sensitive topic – but one that she might handle differently in the future. “It was poor judgment on my part in allowing them to film at school,” Ariemma said. “… That was a hard lesson learned.” The incident happened at Lumpkin County High School. Ariemma said her students spend the year viewing films and later create their own films to watch in class. She said the students brainstorm and pick topics to cover. This particular class decided to trace the history of racism in America. She said the class has 15 students of multiple races, but no blacks. A group of five students took on the subject, which included covering the history of the notorious white supremacist group which had large chapters in Stone Mountain, Ga. and Tuscaloosa, Ala. One student filmed and did not wear sheets, she said. “The kids brought the sheets in, they had SpongeBob party hats underneath to make it shaped like a cone,” Ariemma said. “They cut out the eyes so they could see.” Ariemma said she led the students through a cafeteria to another location where they shot the scene. Later, she said another teacher approached her. “That's when I heard there were a couple of students who were upset,” she said. Ariemma said she wasn't able to find those students to explain the project to them. Monday, student Cody Rider told Atlanta's WSB-TV that his cousin was among those who saw the group in white sheets and was frightened. “I got mad and stood up and I tried to go handle it,” he told the TV station. Moye said a black parent went to the school to complain that evening. Ariemma has no history of missteps at the school, Moye said, but administrators of the roughly 90 percent white school system are taking the incident seriously. “This stuff happened in history. Do you ignore it? No,” he said. “But you certainly don't walk the hallway in the garb.” Ariemma says administrators will review the film and decide if it will be shown in the classroom. She said the students who wore the sheets were shaken when they realized hat other students were upset. added by: onemalefla
