Environmental Campaigner Swims Across Everest Glacial Lake

Lewis Gordon Pugh is a 40-year-old lawyer from Devon. He is an environmental campaigner who swum 1kilometers (0.62miles) across a glacial lake on Mount Everest to highlight the impact of global warming. Pugh wore only swimming trunks, goggles and swimming hat when he swum the 2C waters of Pumori Lake at 17,000 feet (5.300meters). He looks forward to bring the “world’s attention” to the melting of glaciers and its effect on the region. He has been nicknamed as the “human polar bear” for his cold water swims. He has completed the swim near the Khumbu Glacier in just 22 minutes and 51 seconds. He has already swum in Antarctica and across the North Pole to get attention to melting sea ice. On his latest trip, he experienced altitude sickness and freezing conditions. He said: “It’s one of the hardest swims I’ve ever undertaken. When I swam in Antarctica and across the North Pole I swam with speed and aggression but on Mount Everest you can’t use the same tactics. Because of the altitude you need to swim very slowly and deliberately. Swimming 20 meters at full speed in the test swim, I felt I was going to drown. I was gasping for air and if I had swum any faster I would have gone under.” Lewis Gordon Pugh is deeply concerned on how to find a delicate balance whether he’s going too fast or too slow, because this could cause him to get hypothermia. He advocates government to make tackling climate change as a priority because he has witnessed glaciers around the world and many were slowly melting away. Christina Aguilera Cancels Summer Tour

Christina Aguilera has spent a lot of time shooting down comparisons to Lady Gaga. But perhaps this artist should have been promoting her summer tour instead. Sources confirm that Aguilera’s summer concerts in North America have been canceled, likely due to poor ticket sales, although the performer’s reps are claiming otherwise (naturally). They say the tour has merely been “postponed” until 2011 because: “The singer felt she needed more time to rehearse the show and with less than a month between the album release and tour date this wasn’t possible.” A true sign of whether Christina’s comeback has already flopped will be when her album hits stores on June 8. If “Bionic” doesn’t sell well, Aguilera may be forced to embrace her inner thespian. She does make her feature film debut in November’s Burlesque , after all. Without a tour this summer, at least Christina can spent more time at home. Toddler son Max is a certified cutie.

US, SKorea to test military in signal to North

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Monday announced plans for two major military exercises off the Korean peninsula in a show of force aimed at North Korea, which has been blamed by investigators for a deadly torpedo attack on a South Korean warship. The White House called U.S. support for South Korea “unequivocal” and said in a statement that President Obama had directed military commanders to work with the South “to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression.” North Korean leaders have denied responsibility and warned against any retaliation, but Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday blamed the North for the crisis. “We are working hard to avoid an escalation of belligerence and provocation,” Clinton told reporters in Beijing, where she was to press China to support diplomatic action against its neighbor and ally, North Korea. “This is a highly precarious situation that the North Koreans have caused in the region.” U.S. officials hope a united international response, coupled with a display of military might, will deter North Korea's neo-Stalinist regime from ratcheting up tensions. An international team of investigators last week blamed the North for the March 26 sinking of the South Korean corvette, the Cheonan. Forty-six South Koreans died aboard the ship, which investigators say was ripped in two by a torpedo. The sinking was South Korea's worst military disaster since the Korean War, which started 60 years ago and ended in a cease-fire in 1953. But no formal peace treaty was ever signed, and more than 28,000 U.S. troops remain stationed in the south, a critical regional ally. Until Monday, the Obama administration had been intentionally vague on how it might respond to the report blaming North Korea for the attack, out of a reluctance to stoke tensions. But on Tuesday, the Obama administration shifted gears, taking its cue from South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who announced Monday that he would cut all trade with the impoverished North. A Defense Department spokesman, Bryan Whitman, said the joint U.S.-South Korean exercises would take place in the “near future” and would focus on detecting submarines and monitoring illicit activities. The Pentagon confirmed the planned exercises are directly tied to the torpedo attack two months ago. Jeff Breslau, spokesman for U.S. Pacific Fleet, said the U.S. and South Korea conduct more than a dozen military exercises a year. Several typically involve anti-submarine operations and maritime security, he said. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday called the evidence against North Korea “overwhelming and deeply troubling,” and called on the U.N. Security Council to take action. “I am confident that the council . . . will take measures appropriate to the gravity of the situation,” he said. But any measure reprimanding North Korea will have to win the approval of all five veto-wielding members of the Security Council, including China. So far, China has sought to maintain a neutral stance and has questioned the evidence against Pyongyang. But Clinton, in Beijing for trade and strategic talks, said she has discussed the Korean crisis with Chinese officials and China recognizes “the gravity of the situation we face.” “The Chinese understand the reaction by the South Koreans, and they also understand our unique responsibility for the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” she said. Chinese President Hu Jintao, speaking as the Beijing talks opened, did not mention North Korea by name. But he said the United States and China share responsibility for “managing regional hotspots” and “safeguarding world peace and security.” Speaking later, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Ma Zhaoxu, said China hoped “all the relevant parties will exercise restraint and remain coolheaded, appropriately handle issues of concern and prevent escalation of the event.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100524/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_obama_korea added by: onemalefla

‘Lost’ Finale: Experts Talk Impact Of Religion On The Island

‘Lost’ dealt intimately with suffering and redemption, concepts central to Christianity, Buddhism and more. By Eric Ditzian Matthew Fox and Terry O’Quinn in the finale of “Lost” Photo: ABC Christian Shephard. The Dharma Initiative. Japanese temples and reproductions of Egyptian statues. The ever-present questions of fate, faith, suffering, atonement and redemption. Over six seasons of “Lost,” religious traditions were a key component of the show, informing characters’ decisions, shedding light on the mysterious and raising new questions about just what the heck is going down on that wacked-out island. The series finale brought these religious elements to the forefront like never before. It turned out that the so-called sideways timeline in which our Losties had been living alternate lives — their plane landing in safety rather than crashing on the island — was really a sort of way station for souls: Jack, Kate, Sawyer and the rest had collectively created this universe as a way to find one another again, experience an awakening about their island lives and ultimately free themselves from it and move forward into the Great Beyond. But how much of that story line actually lined up with identifiable elements from actual religious doctrines and traditions? Quite a bit, it turns out. In creating their mythology, the minds behind “Lost” sampled from Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Taoism and other traditions. “They were drawing on a number of religious traditions,” James McGrath, an associate professor of religion at Butler University and an avid “Lost” fan, told MTV News. “It didn’t closely resemble any one religion, although there were points of similarity. It was like that ‘Coexist’ bumper sticker . “There’s this Hindu idea of passing into one life and remembering another one,” he continued. “There is also the notion of purgatory, which is largely connected with Christian doctrine and tradition — essentially suffering as a way of atoning for sin and wrongdoing. But that didn’t seem to be a part of the sideways universe. If anything, they seemed to be fairly happy,” McGrath said. “And I suppose you could give a Buddhist slant to it, but in Buddhism it’s that our consciousness perceives reality wrongly. The reality that we perceive, we may create it, but that’s a bad thing. In ‘Lost,’ it was a good thing.” Put another way, taking that tack was how “Lost” gave us a happy ending. But this sort of salad bar-like sampling of religious tradition should not be seen as disrespectful to any one faith. Rather, there’s a long history of such storytelling assemblage. “Myths are always mashups, not just in pop culture, but from thousands and thousands of years of traditions,” explained S. Brent Rodriguez Plate, a visiting associate professor of religious studies at Hamilton College and a big fan of the show. Just look at the Losties’ final meeting place in the finale: an interfaith church with iconography from Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism and more. McGrath also pointed to Jack’s descent into the bubbling source of the Island’s power — a glowing stone hole whose energy is stoppered by a large stone plug. “The technical description of these artifacts would be a lingam and a yoni,” he said. “It basically is the representation of the male and female aspects of the deity, quite common with Hindu religious iconography and connected with sexuality.” And then there is the fact that the sideways Losties recovered memoirs of their other lives. John Hawley, a professor of religion at Barnard College and a specialist in the devotional traditions of North India, sees a connection to Buddhist and Hindu traditions. “In terms of remembering past lives, some of that comes up with the Buddha, when he is said to have had that night of awakening that made him the Buddha,” Hawley told MTV News. “He is said, in the course of that long night [of meditation], to have gone through a whole series of moments in which he remembers all of his past lives. It is a major feature of Hinduism — one of the accomplishments that can be achieved by someone who takes the time to step aside from ordinary, everyday reality and meditate, think and watch things.” Iconography, purgatory, remembrance of other lives — all this is just scratching the surface of how the show explored various religious practices. “Lost” dealt intimately with the idea of suffering and redemption, concepts that are central, in one way or another, to Christianity, Buddhism and other religions, according to the experts with whom MTV talked. And while “Lost” freely sampled from all the various religious principles, Plate sees a unifying theme connecting it all together. “What the show was ultimately about is the fact that we need each other, we’re a community, and we all die,” Plate said. “The final scene — it doesn’t matter if you’re a Hindu or a Jew or a Buddhist — we all die,” he added. And those are probably the deepest shared ideas across the world and history. No religion can deny that we need each other. No religion can deny that we die. The differences come when you try and explain what happened.” What do you think of how “Lost” used religion to tell stories? Share your thoughts in the comments. Japan’s Slowest Train Offers Best Views

Japan is famous for its high speed bullet trains. However, one of the most spectacular lines in the country has a top speed of only 20 kilometers an hour. It maybe slow compared to the bullet train of Japan, but nothing can match to the railway of the wildness of the Japanese which attracts a million of people every year to come to make this journey. By keeping the train going is a tough job for the maintenance crew who take the customer service seriously. They make sure that the tracks are clear as they wind through steep mountain sides. According to one crew, nothing is mechanized. They do everything by hand and it is physically very demanding. At the start of the summer, the team travels at the line which is originally built to transport materials for the construction of a hydro-electric dam. This is one of the few railways in the world that has to be rebuilt every year. The bridges over the mountain streams are disassembled during the winter to prevent them from being swept away by avalanches. The crews get the tracks under the tunnel where they are being kept during the long freeze. The crew must carefully balance themselves at the torrent to put them back together. One slit could spell disaster. It all has to be finish in time for the railway to reopen on the summer season. Even though the trains are running again the work is not yet done. Every night there is maintenance to keep up with. The crew wanted to make sure the safety of their passengers. The train runs through a gorge in the north of the country where the area is so mountainous and snowy. The service can only run in the summer season. Adam Lambert Takes to Tonight Show Stage

In his music video for “If I Had You,” Adam Lambert combines the worlds of Willy Wonka with Thriller and Interview with the Vampire . Sounds about right for the flamboyant artist, doesn’t it? But Lambert toned his look down a bit for a performance on The Tonight Show Friday evening, merely donning a pair of zebra-inspired pants for a rendition of this same single. Judge them for yourself now: Over the past couple weeks, Lambert has appeared at charity event that raised money to fight AIDS; taken part in a concert sponsored by KISS-FM in Los Angeles; been interviewed by Ellen DeGeneres; and come down with a slight case of Bieber Fever . We hope he’s feeling better because there’s a tour of North America to go this summer! Below, enjoy his Tonight Show performance of “If I Had You.” The Tonight Show Performance
