‘Lost’ Fanatic Mark Hoppus Shares How He Got Hooked

The Blink-182 frontman watched five seasons in a row while on tour last year. By Mark Hoppus Mark Hoppus Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images With the series finale of “Lost” only a few days away, anticipation for the show’s end has reached a fever pitch. Fans all across the Internet and all over the world are speculating how the series might end and discussing what the six seasons have meant to them — including Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus. We asked him to explain what the show has meant to him and what he thinks may go down during the finale, which airs this Sunday, May 23. I was a non-believer for a few years. After casually watching the first season, I fell off the show. Each week, everyone would come into the studio, excitedly talking about the latest episode from the night before. I laughed and asked them if it had been the episode where they ALMOST get off the island. Or if Gilligan made a cameo. Everyone looked at me and shook their heads. Then this past summer, on the North American Blink-182 tour, at the insistence of most of the crew, I re-watched the series from the first episode through the end of season five. In a matter of days. I couldn’t stop. With the exception of soundcheck and showtime, I spent every waking minute watching show after show, into the small hours of the morning. The pivotal moment for me was when Locke walked. I had to know and understand his role and place on the island. He has been and continues to be the show’s most compelling character. And now there’s one final episode. Locke vs. Jack? Smoke Monster vs. Desmond Hume? Hurley vs. the Lottery Numbers? What the hell is going to happen? And more importantly, why was MY name not in the list of candidates?!?! How did you get hooked on the show? Share your own “Lost” memories in the comments below. We’re celebrating the long-awaited conclusion of “Lost” all this week at MTV News! We’ll be bringing you exclusive interviews, insightful commentary and, in true “Lost” fashion, maybe even a surprise or two. North Korea Vows ‘Unprecedented Nuclear Strikes’ In Latest Threat

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea's military warned South Korea and the United States on Friday of “unprecedented nuclear strikes” over a report the two countries plan to prepare for possible instability in the totalitarian country. The North routinely issues such warnings and officials in Seoul and Washington react calmly. Diplomats in South Korea and the U.S. instead have repeatedly called on Pyongyang to return to international negotiations aimed at ending its nuclear programs. “Those who seek to bring down the system in the (North), whether they play a main role or a passive role, will fall victim to the unprecedented nuclear strikes of the invincible army,” North Korea's military said in comments carried by the official Korean Central News Agency. The North, believed have enough weaponized plutonium for at least half a dozen atomic bombs, conducted its second atomic test last year, drawing tighter U.N. sanctions. Experts from South Korea, the U.S. and China will meet in China next month to share information on North Korea, assess possible contingencies in the country, and consider ways to cooperate in case of an emergency situation, South Korea's Dong-a Ilbo newspaper reported earlier this month, citing unidentified sources in Seoul and Beijing. The experts will also hold follow-up meetings in Seoul in June and in Honolulu in July, it said. The North Korean statement Friday specifically referred to the March 19 newspaper report. A spokeswoman said the South Korean Defense Ministry had no information. South Korean media have reported that Seoul has drawn up a military operations plan with the United States to cope with possible emergencies in the North. The North says the U.S. plots to topple its regime, a claim Washington has consistently denied. Last month, the North also threatened a “powerful – even nuclear – attack,” if the U.S. and South Korea went ahead with annual military drills. There was no military provocation from North Korea during the exercises. China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the U.S. have been trying to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons in six party talks. The North quit the negotiations last year. The fate of the North's nuclear weapons has taken on added urgency since late 2008 as concerns over the health of leader Kim Jong Il have intensified. Kim, who suffered an apparent stroke in 2008, may die within three years, South Korean media have reported. His death is thought to have the potential to trigger instability and a power struggle in the North. http://news.yahoo.com/video/world-15749633/s-korea-blames-north-for-sunken-ship-… added by: onemalefla

What is the best way to convince North Korea to give up its nuclear program?

As North Korean leader Kim Jong Il took a quick trip to visit China, many wondered if the People's Republic would be successful in persuading him back to the negotiating table over his nuclear program. It's been a long and relatively unfruitful process, with every step forward marked by a corresponding step back. If the Obama Administration or the United Nations opens up negotiations again, how should they approach it? More sanctions? More aid? This Is Why We’re All Effed: iPad Tops 1 Million Sales, 3G Version Is Identical, and We’re Microwaving Them

Photo via Veronica Belmont There are few things out there that do a better job than the iPad at highlighting just what’s wrong with us when it comes to our gadget mentality. We love our gadgets, and they hold a lot of potential for dematerializing our lives, which means a smaller collective carbon footprint and hope for a sustainable future. But that potential only goes as far as we will take it, and from the looks of things, we aren’t wanting to dematerialize and, what’s worse, we aren’t even valuing the stuff that we put up on a pedestal as revolutionary. The iPad underscores all this with Apple reporting over 1 million sales of the first device, the launch of the 3G version which is exactly the same save for 3G connectivity and a higher price tag, and news of people doing everything from microwaving to blending to beating the device with a baseball bat. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

"Fabricating A Stone"- Holiday House Camouflaged as Big Rock

Roland Halbe via Abitare AntAn GarcAa- Abril and Ensamble Studio have built La Trufa, or truffle, on the north Spanish coast. Crystal Bowersox’s Hometown Fans Say Her ‘Idol’ Run Gives Them Hope

Teens and other followers in Ohio are inspired by Bowersox’s success. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX TOLEDO, Ohio — Like its neighbor to the north, Detroit, Toledo has been hit hard by the Great Recession and the shrinking American auto industry. Downtown is littered with the hulks of giant factories that used to help supply parts and materials to the Motor City’s car industry, but which now sit fenced off, their broken windows and weed-choked parking lots a testament to better times in this industrial city. But despite areas with some of the highest double-digit unemployment rates in the state, these days there are plenty of reason for hope thanks to the unlikely championship run of the area’s new favorite daughter, “American Idol” top three contestant Crystal Bowersox. “She came from a small town, so it shows anybody can do anything,” said Derek Wood, 14, who gathered with more than 200 others to watch the elimination show in the Baptist church across the street from Bowersox’s childhood home two weeks ago. “I think it gives [kids around here] the chance to open up their dreams and try other things … think they can actually do it. I think she’s going to win.” That kind of optimism can be found all over the Toledo area, from the spanking-new signs proclaiming tiny Elliston, Ohio (population 75), the hometown of Bowersox, to the dozens of store windows painted with messages of encouragement for MamaSox in neighboring Oak Harbor, put up by the cheerleaders from the singer’s old middle school. After Bowersox made it through to the top four that night, Oak Harbor native Jaime Sellback, 20, was relieved and said the success has helped create a sense of community in the area. “I think it’s brought everyone together, really, I mean, to have an ‘Idol’ from our town?” she said after attending her first viewing party at the church. “It’s just crazy to think that someone’s going to hopefully win it — well, she will win it — and be famous … just from a small town, and she’s done so good.” Of course she’s a bit biased, but Bowersox’s grandmother, Alice Bowersox, is not only proud of her granddaughter’s success, but glad the rest of the world finally gets to see what she’s known all along. “We knew she was going somewhere,” said Alice Bowersox. “We really knew she had a lot of talent. And now the rest of the world is finding it out.” When it’s suggested that her granddaughter’s rise from a modest rural Ohio background to the biggest stage in television is a quintessential American success story, Alice blanches a bit, showing some of that signature Bowersox grit that Crystal has displayed when sparring with the judges on the show. “We always knew that she was going to go far,” she said modestly. “And coming from a small town doesn’t really have a whole lot to do with it. It was her drive and she really worked hard for this. That one night [on ‘Idol’] when she talked about singing in the subway in Chicago, she really did that. She’d sing anywhere.” The previous night, Dr. Jeff Bunkers, who was Bowersox’s orthodontist when she was a teenager, sat up close to the TVs at the Village Idiot in Maumee, Ohio — where Bowersox had a standing weekly engagement up until she left for “Idol” — and watched her perform with a big smile on his face. “I think it shows people that … if you can dream it, it’ll happen. No matter how long it takes, it will happen,” he said. “So I think we should all have some dreams and let’s work towards fulfilling those dreams. Because I think Crystal … she’s showing us that no matter where you come from, what you think, you can really make it happen.” That can-do message has spread all the way down to the school Bowersox attended, Oak Harbor Middle School, where principal Marie Wittman has been using an old video of the singer winning her sixth-grade talent contest as a way to motivate students during their recent Ohio achievement tests. “I can actually play off of Crystal’s success because she was very driven at a young age and has worked so hard,” said Wittman. “I told the students that with hard work and dedication and all of those good things, that they will be successful some day, that they never know where their dreams can take them.” With the annual talent show coming up, she said some students have already taken Bowersox’s example and signed up for guitar lessons thinking that they might follow in the Ohio native’s footsteps. Perhaps nobody is prouder, though, than local musician Ron Rasberry , the man who was one of the first in the area to give Bowersox a shot at playing on a real stage and who has nurtured her musical aspirations for more than a decade. “Man, people are walking around and smiling,” said Rasberry, perched on a stool on the stage at the gritty downtown Toledo bar Papa’s Tavern, where Bowersox began playing at age 14 and where she is now enshrined in a hand-painted mural on the wall beside Rasberry. “This city needs a good shot in the arm, you know. Right now things are little tough and rough around here. … She’s putting smiles on people’s faces that wouldn’t ordinarily watch that show. And I’m one of them.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Daughtry Shows Michael Lynche What His Post-‘Idol’ Future Could Be

Season-five alum Chris Daughtry and his band perform ‘September’ on elimination night. By Eric Ditzian Chris Daughtry performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX On the same night that “American Idol” kicked off Michael Lynche , another fourth-place “Idol” finisher, Chris Daughtry , returned to the stage to show Big Mike that he can still have a bright future as a recording artist. The season-five contestant and his band were welcomed back to “Idol” on Wednesday night and performed “September,” a single off their platinum-selling second album, Leave This Town. Looking not much different than he did upon his “Idol” audition years ago, a bald-headed and bearded Daughtry belted out the slow-burning tune as Lynche and his fellow contestants awaited their fate. Any one of them would be thankful to have even half the success that Daughtry has enjoyed. His self-titled debut hit the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 in 2006 and ended up going platinum four times. Last year, the band’s follow-up disc debuted at #1 and was certified platinum in February 2010. They’re also in the midst of a wide-ranging North American tour that has them playing in huge arenas throughout the country. “It doesn’t get old,” Daughtry later said of playing for large crowds. “It’s an amazing feeling every night, and we’re fortunate that we have fans that want to come out and see us. We don’t take that for granted.” Daughtry also had a piece of advice for this season’s remaining finalists. “Stay hungry and actually don’t compromise the music that you love,” he said. “Stick with what’s true to you.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Ultrasound As A Male Contraceptive

Scientists are starting their tests to check if ultrasound can be used as reversible contraceptive for men. According on the early work of University of North Carolina, a blast of ultrasound to the testes can safely stop sperm production for about six months. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grants $100,000 for the research and because of this they will push ahead with more clinical trials. The researchers are ultimately looking forward that it could offer a new birth control option to couples throughout the world. According to Dr James Tsuruta, lead researcher, this could provide men with up to six months of reliable, low-cost, non-hormonal contraception from a single round of treatment. The long term goal of the team is to use ultrasound from therapeutic instruments that are usually found in sports medicine or physical therapy clinics as cheap, long-term, reversible male contraceptive desirable for use in developing to first world countries. The researchers explain that once the testis has stopped its production of sperm and all “sperm reserves” have been used up, the man will be temporarily infertile.
