Mariah Carey’s Remix Album Canceled

Singer is ‘back in the studio working on some new surprises,’ rep says. By James Montgomery Mariah Carey Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage Mariah Carey’s planned remix album of her recent Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel — called Angels Advocate — apparently has been scrapped in favor of what her reps are calling “some new surprises.” The album had been scheduled for a March 30 release, but earlier this week, Carey fansite Mariah Daily Journal cited a management representative as saying the album will not be released. “We are looking to go possibly to another studio album or Christmas album. The decision hasn’t been totally made yet. It’s a creative process that cannot be rushed,” the rep reportedly said. On Monday, a spokesperson for Carey’s label, Island Def Jam, did not directly confirm that the album had been canceled but said, “We’ve released a few of Mariah’s hot remixes on iTunes and Mariah’s back in the studio working on some new surprises.” Two tracks slated for the album — “Angels Cry” (featuring Ne-Yo) and “Up Out My Face” (featuring Nicki Minaj) — are currently available on the iTunes Store. The IDJ spokesperson did not elaborate on what the “new surprises” might be, and did not specifically mention plans for a Carey Christmas album. Her last foray into the genre, 1994’s Merry Christmas, was a massive success, and spawned the instant classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” a song which continues to receive Holiday airplay to this day. Carey wrapped her Angels Advocate North American tour with a show in Las Vegas last month. Related Artists Mariah Carey

Justin Bieber: Highlights From His Young Career

We round up a few of the standout moments from Bieber’s career so far. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs on “Dick Clarks’ New Years Rockin’ Eve” Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images for DCP Over the last eight months or so, Justin Bieber has quickly left his mark on pop culture. With one album released last November, My World, and with another out Tuesday, the aptly titled sophomore release My World 2.0, Bieber is the new reigning teen heartthrob in the pop world. Many MTV viewers were introduced to Bieber last September as fans vied for the chance to get a shout-out from him at the Video Music Awards. And when the competition closed, Tricia Matibag was declared the winner and Bieber gave her big ups at the big show, where he later presented an award with Nickelodeon star Miranda Cosgrove. After gaining a bit of momentum and just weeks after releasing his debut album, a mall appearance in Long Island, New York, was canceled after fans stormed the mall for a chance to see Bieber in person. He later rang in 2010 performing on Dick Clark’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve,” and presented at the Grammy Awards a couple months later alongside fellow pop newbie and overnight sensation Ke$ha. He then performed at BET’s “SOS: Help For Haiti” telethon with stars like Wyclef Jean and Diddy who also helped to raise funds for Haiti earthquake relief — he also appeared on the “We Are the World” remake for the same cause. His fame isn’t relegated to North America, though — much like the mall in Long Island, Bieber caused a riot in the streets of Paris , where he was scheduled to make an in-store appearance. He also very famously met up with a crying 3-year-old fan for a segment on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show. Bieber will release My World 2.0 on Tuesday. Spotify when will you come to US? #SXSW

Last year I was visiting Current's UK office. The hottest thing I discovered there (other than the pickled onion flavoured crisps) was streaming music software Spotify. The program let play almost any song I've ever heard instantly. My new office colleagues sent me mixes, for my enjoyment. We bonded over our shared taste in international party music. I became addicted. When I returned stateside, I was devastated when I found out, that Spotify does not work in the United States. I've been waiting for the day that day where I can stream music so easily once again. This afternoon I sat in a crowded hall listening to founder Daniel Ek's keynote speech at SXSW, with hopes that he'd provide us with a big reveal. He talked about how the service has grown. Recently they've been expanding the service to mobile apps. A version comes with three-to-six months of free service on Sweden's local provide Telia. “We want to enable your library on these types of devices.” He showed us an example of the app in progress. This product will all you to turn your phone into a miniature mobile disco. The industry has worked with Spotify since it's inception. Ek says that music sales are on the rise in places like Sweden, where 15 – 20% of the nation's population use the service. So if this is a viable business model that the music industry supports, why isn't it available in North America? Someone finally asked the million dollar question. Ek wants “to build the best possible product” before a US launch. They are also aiming to move into the Chinese market. He opened by saying “playlists are the new mixtapes of 2010.” I am optimistic that Spotify playlists will become the new mixtapes for people everywhere in the world. added by: joshuaheller
