And to this list we can now add Polar Vortex, as areas across the Midwest and East Coast are becoming all too familiar with this frigid weather phenomenon. Polar Vortex: What Is It? A Polar Vortex is a whirlpool of freezing air and it descend upon various parts of the country today. Those in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin are experiencing subzero temperatures and more than a foot of snow. They are being encouraged to remain inside. “It’s just a dangerous cold,” National Weather Service meteorologist Butch Dye says, referring to places such as Fargo, North Dakota, where the forecast is for 32 degrees below zero. Frostbite and hypothermia often set in quickly at 15 to 30 below zero. The weather is wreaking havoc on travel, as well, with thousands of flights canceled yesterday through Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis. Attractions such as the St. Louis Art Museum and St. Louis Zoo have been closed indefinitely, while the Indiana Supreme Court is closed and even southern states are bracing for record-low temperatures. There are endless snow days around the country, but let’s hope those happy kids are bundled up to the fullest extend while they sled and play around. It’s seriously dangerous out there.
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry is in hot water for making jokes about Mitt Romney’s adopted, African-American grandchild on the air last weekend. Melissa Harris-Perry: Sorry For Mocking Romneys’ Black Grandson The comments came during a segment in which a roster of comedians were riffing on notable photos from the past year, and things went off the rails. A photo of the Romney family with Mitt’s latest grandchild, Kieran Romney, who is adopted and African-American, on Mitt’s knee, sparked laughter. “One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn’t the same,” sang out Pia Glenn, one of Harris-Perry’s guests on the show. Harris-Perry herself said she would like to see the “gorgeous” child and North West, daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, get married some day. “Can you imagine Mitt Romney and Kanye West as in-laws?” she said. This apparently incongruous sight had everybody on-screen giggling, but the capper was provided by comedian Dean Obeidallah, who quipped: “It sums up the diversity of the Republican Party and the [Republican National Committee], where they have the whole convention and they find the one black person.” While the imagery of Mitt and ‘Ye as in-laws is pretty hilarious, using a child of a public figure in a political jab (pertaining to race no less) is in pretty bad taste. Conservative blogger Caleb Howe wrote, “He’s not a child adopted by loving parents prepared to provide him with a better life in keeping with the family’s values.” “Nope. He’s just a token. A punchline, not a person.” Sarah Palin was more pointed, writing, “Holy unbelievable. The hypocritical leftist lamestream media should be shamed by every caring, child-loving American.” Incredibly, this wasn’t just an off-the-cuff remark. The segment was pre-planned, leaving conservatives outraged that someone thought this was a good idea. With Phil Robertson returning to Duck Dynasty , the media seized on this latest left-right controversy and the umbrage rising against the MSNBC host. Harris-Perry apologized this morning, Tweeting, “I am sorry. Without reservation or qualification. I apologize to the Romney family #MHPapology” Yes … she appears to have added a touch of self-promotion in the form of that ridiculous hashtag to an apology that otherwise would’ve sounded sincere. Compared to her guests, though, she was downright contrite . Pia Glenn apologized to families with adoptive children but defended herself vociferously. Dean Obeidallah, meanwhile, apologized to the baby if the baby was offended, then went on the offensive, noting that the right is just as insensitive. “I’ll apologize to the Romneys but not the wing nuts,” Obeidallah writes in a Daily Beast column Tuesday titled “Confessions of a Romney Baby Bully.” And the 24/7 political/media wars raged on into 2014 …

Adds another insider: “They are not working with a budget.” Indeed, West seems to live by the motto “Go big or go home.” When he proposed to Kardashian, 33, in October, he hired a 50-piece orchestra and rented out San Francisco’s AT&T Park, which lit up with the words “PLEEEASE MARRY MEEEE!!!” on a giant screen. Us Weekly was not able to confirm, but sources say top wedding planner to the stars Sharon Sacks has most likely been chosen to plan the event. Sacks has planned parties for the Kardashian family for years. Online The Kardashian-Jenner crew has released their annual Christmas card! So, what did the family have in store this year? An intricate, high-fashion photo in which Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian Odom, Kourtney Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner and Bruce Jenner all strike poses in a ransacked, carnival-like room of sorts filled with dollar bills, a sparkling gold money sign, mannequins and photos of the family members, among many other things. The whole family is dressed in black, with Kim standing on a staircase in a cleavage baring, body-hugging dress, while Khloé lounges on a chair in a sparkly black dress with Kourtney’s son Mason draped in front of her. Kourtney, meanwhile, is standing near Khloé, holding her daughter Penelope, who wore a cream, flowy dress for the occasion. Kylie and Kendall strike fierce poses while standing on top of some of the dollar bills, with Kendall showing off her gorgeous gams in a high-cut dress and Kylie giving a smoldering look in back of her. Kim’s daughter North wasn’t in the shot and neither was her fiancé Kanye West. In fact, none of the guys were in the shot except for Bruce. Kim Kardashian has many reasons to be thankful. And she’s listed them all in a new blog post. “Thanksgiving was the holiday that I always spent with my dad skiing every year in Vail, Colorado since I was 2 years old to 22,” Kardashian wrote online yesterday, including a photo of her dad, who passed away in 2003 and adding: “This time of year always brings back such amazing memories. I am thankful I had them. I am so thankful for my family being close and always so supportive.” But 2013 has given the reality star two other reasons to be filled with gratitude as well: daughter North West and fiance Kanye West. “I am extra thankful this year for my baby girl and am so happy I get to spend this Thanksgiving as a family with my daughter and fiance,” Kardashian continued. “I wish you all a good healthy happy thanksgiving from our family to yours… Don’t eat too much.” Kanye has been especially kind to Kim over the past few days. He labeled her the Most Beautiful Woman in the World on one occasion and then compared her favorably to Marilyn Monroe .
Miley Cyrus might need an extra drink tonight in celebration of her 21st birthday. The day before reaching this milestone, the singer’s home was burglarized, as North Hollywood Police sources confirm to Us Weekly and other outlets that an investigation is ongoing, but multiple items were taken from the residence. “She’s extremely upset and a lot of personal items were stolen,” a source says of Miley . “She’s really shaken up about the whole thing.” The break-in took place Friday afternoon in Studio City, with the thief (or thieves, it remains unclear) making off with some rather expensive jewelry. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the crime and no injuries have been reported. Miley Cyrus Birthday Tribute Miley, meanwhile, is hosting a marathon of programming on MTV today and will perform tomorrow night at the American Music Awards.
