David McCullough High School Commencement Speech: You Are Not Special!

This is pretty great. In a commencement speech to Wellesley High School seniors this week, teacher David McCullough Jr. delivered a highly unusual message for such an occasion. Simply put, he told the class before him: you are not special. Said the son of a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian: “Think about this: even if you’re one in a million, on a planet of 6.8 billion that means there are nearly 7,000 people just like you.” David McCullough Jr. Commencement Speech What was McCullough’s point? That accolades have come to mean more than “genuine achievement.” As a consequence, he said: “We cheapen worthy endeavors, and building a Guatemalan medical clinic becomes more about the application to Bowdoin than the well-being of the Guatemalans.” He concludes by emphasizing “selflessness,” which can only be achieved by one realizing this overarching theme, reiterated here again: no one is special . Along the way, McCullough manages to bash Donald Trump , Barney, the Baltimore Orioles, Mr. Rogers and the narcissistic Twitterverse. Even more impressive? The speech was met with rave reviews from those in attendance. “For once someone told us what we need to hear and not necessarily what we wanted to hear,” said one student. Watch the speech above and react below: What do you think?

I ain’t gonna walk out the front so you see me stumbling and dropping my keys. I’m not that guy, I’m not that dumb. I wanna be in this position as long as I possibly can. I mean, I will be honest, any tape I’ve ever made, I own it.” We bet it’s just nothing but tapes on tapes of him cuddling and painting Serena’s toe nails. Young Guru , longtime sound engineer for Jay-Z , has shared a few details about Jay’s next album. The highly-anticipated follow-up to 2009′s Blueprint 3 album is not necessarily a “concept album,” but there is a concept driving it. Guru says, “Jay-Z is always working on stuff, it’s a concept that I can’t talk about but I’m marveled at how smart this guy is. When he told me the concept, I was like ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ It was just so simple. It has a concept and a title, and the title and the concept fit him so well that people are going to be like ‘Wow.’”

Salma Hayek Plastic Surgery

“I believe that every woman is entitled to fight to preserve her youth,” the actress, 44, tells Allure in its September issue, on newsstands Aug. 23. Just not through plastic surgery. “It#39;s like the uniform of a generation,” she says. “And it#39;s not necessarily beautiful. The 25-year-old Wisconsin native joined “RapFix Live” on Thursday afternoon after the world premiere of Dre’s video for “I Need a Doctor,” which features the dark-haired beauty’s urgent and haunting vocals. MTV News asked the red-hot songstress about her role in Dre’s new video for the second single from his final opus, Detox, but not before pointing out Skylar’s newfound notoriety. “Ever since the Grammy performance, we’ve been bombarded with people wanting to work with me, and interviews. It’s been pretty crazy,” Grey said. We asked the buzzing young vocalist about her role in the dramatic and epic video, in which she appears as a ghostly apparition. “My role in the video is not necessarily what you would expect,” shared Skylar. “I play a doctor, but it makes sense because I’m the rehabilitation doctor and [I’m] kind of bringing Dr. Dre back to life.” While Grey doesn’t consider herself an actor, she praised both Eminem and Dre for their performances in the video. “I thought that they were good, really good,” Skylar said. “I’ve seen Em do cameos in movies, and well, Em did ‘8 Mile,’ and I think he’s really talented in that area.” Grey is currently working with Alex da Kid on her debut album. 8 Milestones in the Evolution of James Cameron

This weekend, James Cameron delivers Sanctum , a rare Cameron produced movie that he didn’t direct. But how did Cameron, the director of the two most successful films of all time, get to this point after his disaster of a big-screen debut, Piranha II: The Spawning ? You can always trace a direct line through a handful of projects (not necessarily his best projects, mind you) to illustrate what led to a director’s current success. And with Cameron, it appears, up to this point, everything that he touches turns into gold (literally, because, you know, his movies make a lot of money).
