Bun B Rocks With Live Band At Houston’s House of Blues

The Trill O.G. ‘s hometown album release party set included UGK classics and a Pimp C tribute. By Cynithia Allen Bun B (file) Photo: MTV News HOUSTON — The Trill Bun B put on a memorable show for his fellow Houstonians on the heels of the release of arguably his best album to date, Trill O.G. Bun’s official album party on Wednesday was at the House of Blues and the room was packed. The Texas MC opened up the show with the classic UGK track “Pourin’ Up,” sending the crowd — reciting the track word-for-word — into a frenzy. “Smoking out, pourin’ up/ Keeping lean up in my cup, call my cars got leather and wood/ In my ‘hood, we call it buck,” Bun rapped. The Underground King then reintroduced himself to Houston saying, “What’s up Houston? My name is Bun B, I’m from Port Arthur, Texas, and my only n—-s is UGK, and it’s UGK for life!” Next up, Bun showed a different side of his stage show, performing with a live band the on the song “Trillionaires” and then for the duration of the night. “I feel like the Rolling Stones with this band,” Bun laughed. “I feel like a rock star.” The Port Arthur rapper then went deeper into the UGK vault, performing songs like “Pocket Full of Stones,” (Jay-Z’s) “Big Pimpin’ ” and “Front, Back & Side to Side,” all of which led to an emotional point in Bun’s set. “I feel like Pimp is in the building, man,” Bun said, referring to his fallen UGK partner Pimp C . “Y’all just don’t know, I really miss my brother. I love my brother.” Shortly after paying tribute to Pimp C, Bun performed a snippet of the classic “One Day.” He followed that up with another touching tribute to some of rap’s dearly missed figures, including Tupac Shakur, the Notorious B.I.G. and Houston legends Big Moe, DJ Screw and Big Hawk. Bun then shifted the mood with a choir-style sound, commanding the audience to recite after him. “Now the South is in the house and they can’t do nothing about it,” Bun said, rapping the popular hook from “Draped Up,” the first single from his 2005 album Trill. Bun wrapped the show with “Trillionaire,” off his Trill O.G., captivating the entire venue. What do you think of Bun’s newest album? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Bun B

EXCLUSIVE: Helen Mirren on Three Decades of the ‘Visceral,’ ‘Flawed’ Caligula

This week sees the opening of Love Ranch , the long-delayed, fact-based retelling of the life and times of the first legal brothel in the United States. And this year sees the 30th anniversary of Caligula , a movie whose A-list depravity first arrived on these shores in February 1980. What do they have in common? Dame Helen Mirren, who stars as Love Ranch ‘s willful, no-nonsense madam Grace Bontempo and appeared as Caesonia — the courtesan who bears the mad emperor’s (played by Malcolm McDowell) child — in the notorious, massively expensive film whose power struggles involved everyone from Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione to screenwriter Gore Vidal to top-shelf English talent like McDowell, Mirren, John Gielgud and Peter O’T oole. Reached today to discuss Love Ranch , the Oscar-winner indulged Moveline’s flashback.

Tupac Shakur And Notorious B.I.G. Wax Figures Team Up In D.C.

The rappers’ likenesses will hang out in the same room at Madame Tussauds wax museum in Washington, D.C. By Mawuse Ziegbe The Notorious B.I.G. wax figure Photo: Madame Tussauds Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. didn’t have many chances to work together before they were both killed at the heights of their fame and in the midst of a feud. But now the hip-hop icons will reunite posthumously for the first time — in wax. Wax emporium Madame Tussauds will bring the figures of ‘Pac and Notorious B.I.G. together for the first time on what would have been Tupac’s 39th birthday , Wednesday (June 16), at its Washington, D.C., gallery. The figures will stand near each other for three months. Tupac’s figure is on loan from Madame Tussauds in Las Vegas, and Biggie’s statue, like the actual hip-hop icon, comes from New York’s Madame Tussauds. Visitors to the D.C. museum will have the chance to snap pictures with both figures in the same room, a rare opportunity while the stars were living, since Big and ‘Pac famously lit up headlines as MCs at the forefront of the mid-’90s East Coast/ West Coast hip-hop beef. The museum worked to faithfully replicate the stars’ swagger. ‘Pac’s figure is bare-chested and emblazoned with the late star’s many tattoos, with his signature bandanna knotted around his bald head. The waistband of his Emporio Armani boxers peeks out from the top of his baggy jeans. Biggie’s wax figure is mean-mugging, rocking a crisp white suit and carrying a walking stick; B.I.G.’s mother, Voletta Wallace, even praised the wax rendering of her late son. The figures will be displayed in the museum’s Glamour Room. Although Tupac and Biggie were both gunned down in the mid-’90s, their legacies are still felt throughout the music scene. “Notorious,” a biopic based on B.I.G.’s rise to fame hit theaters in 2009 , and “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua is working on a Tupac movie . Fellow icon Eminem brought the late stars together again in 2003 on the song “Runnin’ (Dying to Live)” for the “Tupac: Resurrection” soundtrack. Will you go check out the side-by-side wax figures? But what Bashir really wanted the Bad Boy Records CEO to discuss was the murders of the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. And though Diddy did talk about Biggie’s last day at a Paris press conference on Thursday, he told Bashir that he had talked about that topic enough in the past. “I decided that it was something that I just wasn’t really gonna be talking about anymore,” Diddy told the probing host about Biggie’s death. “It was in the past, and I’ve talked about it so much. I love him, I miss him, and he’s one of my best friends. It was a tragic loss.” Bashir, who has a reputation for aggressive questioning, continued to ask the superstar if he had any information on the two deaths that rocked the hip-hop world over a decade ago. “No, No idea.” Diddy said. “I feel the loss of my friend. … I feel the loss of Tupac.” Later in the interview, Bashir discussed the birthday bash Diddy threw for his son early this year that was featured on an episode of MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16.” The mogul defended his decision to give his son a Maybach car valued at over $400,000. Why Fox Searchlight’s ‘Movies For Black People’ Experiment Failed

Give Fox Searchlight some credit, I guess, for attempting to navigate one of the more challenging markets in contemporary film: the “urban market,” i.e. movies targeted toward minority viewerships, particularly African-Americans. And now that most signs point to the company’s retreat from that same market after a few conspicuous underperformers, go ahead and ask: What went wrong?

Tupac Should Be Played By Unknown Actor, Biopic Director Says

‘I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be,’ Antoine Fuqua says of casting Shakur film. By Jayson Rodriguez Tupac Photo: Chi Modu Following the success of the Biggie Small’s biopic “Notorious,” and the announcement late last year that a Run-DMC flick is in the works, director Antoine Fuqua recently revealed his next project would be a feature about the life of Tupac Shakur . “It looks like we’re doing Tupac Shakur’s movie next in September, that’s what I’ve been starting up and working on now,” Fuqua told the British entertainment website Digital Spy on Friday. “I’ve been working on that for a while with Morgan Creek and [the production company’s CEO] Jim Robinson. I just got the green light from him and we’re going in September. I’ve just started to prep that.” Fuqua (“Training Day,” “Brooklyn’s Finest”) told Digital Spy that he would like to see a fresh face in the role of the iconic rapper, who was gunned down in 1996. For “Notorious,” producers set out on a nationwide search for an upstart actor to play the Notorious B.I.G., before deciding on local Brooklyn rapper Jamal “Gravy” Woolard. Anthony Mackie, who had earlier played Tupac in an off-Broadway play, tied on the signature bandana again to play the West Coast rapper in “Notorious.” But Fuqua seems intent on finding multiple newcomers to play various parts in the yet-untitled project. “That’s the goal, I want to discover someone new,” Fuqua said. “I want to discover a lot of new people if I can. Obviously I’m going to have to put some people in it that you know, just because actors have different skills. I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be in the world.” Who do you think should play Tupac in a biopic? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Tupac

Pill Preps First Gangsta Grillz Tape, Holds Off On Debut

‘I don’t want to rush it,’ the Atlanta MC tells Mixtape Daily of taking his time on The Medicine. By Steven Roberts and Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Pill Photo: Atlantic The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Pill is going for the trifecta next week. The rapper burst onto the scene last year thanks to his frantically-paced anthem “Trap Going Ham.” Since then, he’s released two “pharmaceutical”-themed mixtapes, 4180: The Prescription with DJ Burn One and 4175: The Refill with DJ Skee. Now, Pill is upping his prescription when he drops his first Gangsta Grillz mixtape with DJ Drama, 1140: The Overdose, on June 1. “Me and DJ Drama, it will be a Gangsta Grillz. Get that on your mind right!” Pill told Mixtape Daily. ” 1140: The Overdose. I got few features, but I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag just yet. You could look for it to be along the same lines of The Prescription or The Refill. I just try to keep it going the way I usually do it. I don’t want to switch it up, because I made it this far doing what I do, so I’m going to keep doing what I do.” Pill’s previous tapes have mixed original material with jacked beats from a wide array of artists like Destiny’s Child and the Notorious B.I.G. The Overdose continues in that tradition: Freestyles over Ludacris’ “How Low” and T.I.’s “I’m Back” have already leaked to the Web. His tapes have helped Pill win a spot on XXL ‘s 2010 Freshmen 10 . Despite his quick rise, Pill said he won’t rush his aptly titled debut album, The Medicine. “I don’t want to rush it, because you know how a lot of people get signed and they drop an album ASAP, and nobody knows who they really are? I don’t want to fall victim to that,” he said. “[I’ll] probably drop another two mixtapes and then be looking forward to the album. I don’t want to drop it on them. I want them to be like, ‘We need that Pill album,’ so I can give them The Medicine. ” Other Heat This Week

Kevin Jonas Reveals His Pole-Vaulting Past On ‘When I Was 17’

‘People laughed at me for a while about that one,’ the pop star says of his track days. By MTV News staff Kevin Jonas Photo: MTV News These days, Kevin Jonas makes a living as a pop star along with his superstar brothers, Joe and Nick. But there was a time when Kevin had to mow lawns for pocket money and, back in his after-school days, Kevin was a member of the track team. Yes, Kevin Jonas used to be a jock. “When I was 17, my favorite sport was pole vaulting,” Kevin recalled in this week’s episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” which also features stories from Katharine McPhee and Bret Michaels . “Freshman year of high school, my history teacher actually asked me. He’s like, ‘You’re going to join the track team. You should be a pole vaulter.’ ” After some skepticism about doing it and initially being confused by what was expected of him as a pole vaulter, Kevin quickly changed his mind. “I was like, ‘Oh, OK. Whatever.’ And then I realized what pole vaulting was,” he remembered. “And I was like, ‘Yes! Please!’ ” In the episode, Kevin’s uncle Josh shared just how much Kevin enjoyed the sport. “He loved it — he loved the challenge, always tried to go higher, the extra next level.” Now, Kevin spends his time at “Camp Rock,” but back in the day at high school in New Jersey, it was all about Camp Track. “Pole vaulting was my passion. Lil’ Cease’s New Mixtape Is ‘Real Gutter, Grimy Beats’

‘It’s like a real underground album,’ the MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Lil Cease and Notorious B.I.G. Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Happy birthday to the one and only Notorious B.I.G. — the hip-hop legend would have been 38 years old on Friday (May 21). And, just like they did on the 13th anniversary of his death on March 9 , his fans, friends and family will be celebrating his legacy all day. One of Biggie’s closest confidants, Lil’ Cease, is not just going to play the tunes of his best friend — he’s putting out music that he feels the Notorious One would have been proud of. ” Everything Is Hardbody, the first mixtape dropping May 21 [on] B.I.’s b-day,” Cease explained. “I think that’s the day for it. It was just the timing around when I finished it — I was like, ‘This is a good day to drop it on. It’s the time when people are thinking about a Lil’ Cease or B.I. or Junior M.A.F.I.A. They’re thinking about us on March 9th or May 21.’ I was like, ‘Let’s go for that date. It will be something monumental, something special.’ When people think of B.I. Day, I’m sure I come to their minds. I’ll give them a whole 12-, 13-joint mixtape with some nice exclusive music from me. “I stepped my game up as far as the lyrics, concepts. It’s gonna show my maturity,” Cease continued about the upcoming mixtape. “I took time off from the music just to learn it. The music is different from when we was up and moving with it. You gotta be persistent with it, make authentic music. I took it back to that ’94, ’95 era. Thanks to people like Raekwon, who kinda made the music authentic again. You ain’t gotta do the dance music. I kept it basic. That real M.A.F.I.A. sound. It came out dope. I did all new music. It’s more like a free album. I wanted to do something different with the mixtape.” Busta Rhymes, Cardan and Fabolous appear on the tape as well as some new talent. “I got one I just dropped called ‘Just Here to Hustle’ with my boy Apollo Creed — he’s from L.A.,” Cease said. “We just dropped the video online — every site been showing love. I got this one called ‘Yessir’ — we about to shoot the video with my artist Cancun … it’s dope. It’s like a real underground album. If you liked the first Wu-Tang album, this is in that mode. Real gutter, grimy beats.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .
