#BlackHairMatters: The Only African-American Cheerleader At Texas High School Banned From Game Over Braids

Only Black Varsity Cheerleader At Texas High School Banned For Wearing Braids It’s always something with “they”. One day, “they” invented a long-standing staple in black culture, the next, “they” hate on us for expressing that very same culture. SMFH. Via ABC13 A Baytown teen’s mother says her daughter is the victim of racial discrimination by her high school cheer coach. Fifteen-year-old Kemirah Jn-Marie is a flyer on the Ross S. Sterling High School varsity cheer squad. “The coach makes it hard to be on varsity,” she said, telling Eyewitness News the coach has been on her repeatedly about her hair. “She makes me feel bad about myself,” said Jn-Marie. This year, she says, she had special braids done in the hope of meeting cheer requirements. Her mother says things really got out of hand last week when the coach told Kemirah she wouldn’t be able to perform at Saturday’s football game if she showed up as she did at school – with her hair in braids. “I said, ‘If that’s the case, put it in writing. Just put it in writing,’” said Mayra Jn-Marie. She says the school district refused. What is in writing are these Sterling High cheer guidelines: Hair must be “pulled back in a secure pony tail” and hair “must not distract from the cheer environment.” The policy also states that an administrator will determine if a hair style is disruptive. Spike Jones Directed Ad Featuring Andie MacDowell’s Daughter of the Day

Margaret Qualley is Andie MacDowell’s rich kid trust fund daughter who will pretend she was raised in Montana like a Willis sister – but is really just an LA rich kid. She just has a more down to earth storyline, thanks to her parents only working 8 weeks a year for millions of dollars, allowing them to hang in the mountains and ride horses – unlike all their Beverly Hills counterparts…who had to stay in Beverly Hills because their parents were tv hosts or agents who had to live in their LA mansions….the same Mansions they pretend they didn’t grow up in, but went to the second they could…to be actors and models of their own…it’s a good scam… Well she’s in this new Spike Jonze ad with her dancing that people are loving so love it…because Spike Jonze and his fatboy slim remake because they remake everything…Hollywood…such bullshit…. Rest In Peace: Mexican Superstar Singer-Songwriter Juan Gabriel Dead At The Age Of 66

Mexican Superstar Singer-Songwriter Juan Gabriel Dead At The Age Of 66 Mexican superstar Juan Gabriel has passed away after entertaining generations of people for years according to NPR reports Juan Gabriel, a singular superstar who transcended borders and the trappings of gender with meticulously crafted pop songs and a flamboyant showmanship that earned the nickname the “divo of Juarez,” has died, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Juan Gabriel was 66 years old and he was found at a residence in Santa Monica with no apparent foul play. Mexican President Enrique Peña-Nieto tweeted his condolences calling him one of the country’s “greatest musical icons.” “His music is a legacy for the world,” Peña Nieto said. “He has left us too soon. May he rest in peace.” Juan Gabriel wrote pop songs and rock songs. He sang with mariachis and full-blown orchestras, producing dozens of hits. Other artists recorded his songs and on occasion he recorded theirs. He recently covered Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Have You Ever Seen the Rain. Juan Manuel Caipo, who produced that album, said it showed what a chameleon the singer-songwriter was. Caipo says in that sense Juan Gabriel was a lot like Prince. Rest in peace to this legendary entertainer! YT Continue reading

Race Matters: Katy Perry Introduced The Term “Misogynoir” To White America After Leslie Jones’ Nudes Leak

Katy Perry Introduced “Misogynoir” To White America After Leslie Jones’ Nudes Leak Many celebs have voiced their support for comedian Leslie Jones following her nude leak by racist hackers . Singer Katy Petty tweeted about the situation and “introduced” a new term to mainstream America apparently reports Fish Wrapper : Okay, first of all, the talented and wonderful Leslie Jones was the target of a vicious attack (the FBI is investigating). Everybody (well, not white supremacists or the anti-feminist crowd) was tweeting support to her, from politicians to fellow stars to countless fans. Katy Perry was among them. So, first of all, if you’re not familiar and think that maybe “misogynoir” is either that dressing you get with salads at sushi places or perhaps a film genre, the word refers specifically to the particularly vile combination of misogyny and racism directed at black women. Like, racism is bad, sexism is bad, and the two intersect nightmarishly and impact black women in ways foreign to both black men and white women. Anyway, Katy Perry should get credit for tweeting a decent thing here, but that’s it. She would probably agree, even. There are countless people who’ve been using this term for ages, and we should not give credit to a white woman for using it publicly as if she’d just returned from a 19th Century expedition and was returning to Whiteville with a foreign cultural artifact. We’re reminded of when folks try to give white people credit for “discovering” sushi, or acai, or whatever. In those cases, it’s usually hipsters and not pop singers, but you get the same uneasy feeling that credit isn’t being given where credit is due. Katy Perry’s tweet in support of Leslie Jones: But really? Discuss. WENN/Twitter Continue reading
