Smoke DZA Dubs Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T. Rap’s ‘New Elite’

Harlem rapper also names Kendrick Lamar, Dom Kennedy and himself, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Smoke DZA Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Headliner : Smoke DZA Album : Rolling Stoned Key Cameo : “On the Corner” (featuring Bun B and Big K.R.I.T.) Real Spit : Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne are already established — not just as hip-hop stars, but as modern-day musical icons whose reach extends to fans outside of rap as well. In hip-hop’s underground, however, new stars are emerging for a new generation; Harlem rapper Smoke DZA dubs them “the new elite.” While artists like Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick Lamar and Dom Kennedy are breaking through with mixtapes, independent albums and multi-city tours, DZA feels right there among that crop. He’s even nabbed them all for guest features on his debut indie album Rolling Stoned. “I feel like I’m amongst the elite, and I feel like they are the elite — like the Spittas, Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick, Dom,” Smokey told Mixtape Daily. “That’s the new crop of the elite right now, and just to be amongst them, I’m in a good space.” DZA first made a name for himself in 2004 as a part of the duo Smoke & Numbers, but he split from the group and decided to go solo. In 2009, Smokey re-emerged by himself on Substance Abuse, followed in 2010 with George Kush Da Button. Both projects contained original music and were presented as free Internet albums — though some still labeled them as mixtapes. “Mixtapes to me was like rapping over other people’s beats, so when I really started doin’ the whole pattern of rappin’ over my own beats, I took the whole approach as it being an album,” DZA explained of his approach. “But I always called it a mixtape because it was free. Rappin’ over other people’s beats, I feel like that’s a mixtape, and when you’re rapping over your own original production, it’s more so like an album.” While he was on the road with Big K.R.I.T. on the Mississippi rapper’s Return of 4eva Tour, DZA recorded THC (The Hustler’s Catalog), but it is Rolling Stoned that he counts as his true debut. ” THC was an acronym for ‘The Hustler’s Catalog,’ and I was just telling tales of what I seen or been through on wax,” he said. “So that was just the beginning of the hustle for Smokey, and now Rolling Stoned, it’s a combination of George Kush, Substance Abuse, THC, everything, but with a new output of what I’m doing. Like, bigger production, and I’m working with my peers, so I’m excited about that.” Aside from the “new elite,” Smoke also collaborated with veteran rapper Bun B for “On the Corner.” It was that feature which meant most to him. “That’s the OG of the cool table,” DZA said of the UGK legend. “When the OG gives you the rub, it’s like, what more can you say? It was just an honor and a pleasure working with Bun, and I hope we can do that again.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . NASA Thinks You Should Know Apollo 18 Isn’t Real

When the Weinstein Co. first announced their Apollo 18 project last year, they sent out a press release stating that Russian producer Timur Bekmambetov had discovered actual Apollo 18 footage that would be incorporated in their “documentary.” Just three hours later, the studio retracted the release with a new one that curiously did not mention the footage. But then they released a trailer for Apollo 18 that opened by claiming “the following is the recovered footage from Apollo 18.” Confusing much? On the eve of the film’s release, NASA is finally coming forward to talk about Apollo 18 .

The story behind Machine Gun Preacher is inspiring: Sam Childers traded criminal activity for a life attempting to rescue children in Sudan who would otherwise be co-opted into warfare by the Lord’s Resistance Army. But the movie that dramatises Sam Childers’ story — Gerard Butler stands in for Childers, with a seemingly unstable accent — looks like total by the numbers superficial claptrap. Katy Perry Ties Michael Jackson Singles Record

‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ marks Perry’s fifth #1 single from Teenage Dream, equal only to MJ’s Bad achievement. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: C. Flanigan/ FilmMagic Back in June, Katy Perry was closing in on Michael Jackson ‘s record for the most #1 singles from the same album — and now she’s tied it up. Thanks to the feel-good party jam “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” Perry has the same number of #1 singles from Teenage Dream on the Hot 100 as the late King of Pop did from 1987’s Bad. Now, Perry is both the only woman with five #1 singles from the same album and also the only living artist with that record. So what singles got her there aside from “Last Friday Night”? Perry’s previous #1’s from Teenage Dream are “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “E.T.” Jackson achieved this feat back in 1987 and 1988 with “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror” and “Dirty Diana” from his Bad album. “What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song ‘LAST FRIDAY NIGHT’ is officially #1 & made HISTORY!” the singer tweeted Wednesday (August 17). “&u know, I couldn’t have done it with out ya, really I owe u guys BIG… so take this moment to give yourself a high FIVE!!! #allbecauseofu.” Explore our “Katy Perry: By The Numbers” infographic: Perry broke another singles record earlier this month, having the first album from the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart to have five #1 singles. Perry’s Teenage Dream album is the first in the nearly 19-year history of the chart to accomplish that feat. “Last Friday Night” has proven to be another successful track for the star, and the party anthem recently got an assist from Missy Elliott on the remix . Perry’s Teenage Dream videos have also been cultural smashes. For the 2011 Video Music Awards , Perry racked up the most nominations with nine, including nods for Video of the Year and Best Female Video for “Firework”; Best Pop Video for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”; and Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Special Effects for the Floria Sigismondi-directed “E.T.,” which features fellow nominee Kanye West. Her dreamy “Teenage Dream” clip even nabbed a nomination for Best Cinematography. What’s your favorite Teenage Dream single? Let us know in the comments below! The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Who Are Captain America’s Biggest Foreign Box-Office Allies? [UPDATE]

Before Captain America: First Avenger was released in July, much was made about how the title — and title character in his red, white and blue — would play in foreign markets. In fact, three countries (Russia, Ukraine and South Korea) even decided to release the film with the Marvel-approved shortened title The First Avenger . Following a successful showing stateside , good ol’ Cap made his worldwide debut in many big foreign markets over the weekend; as the numbers trickle in, it looks he’s got some pretty enthusiastic allies.

VMA Nominee Leader Katy Perry, By The Numbers

It’s not just those nine VMA nods — it’s been a record-setting year for Katy. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: C. Flanigan/ FilmMagic There’s no other way to say it: Katy Perry is having a moment. Actually, she’s having 525,600 moments, as in 365 days of record-smashing, parent-upsetting, whipped cream-spurting, alien-loving, Indian wedding-having minutes of awesomeness. And what better way to top it off than with a field-leading nine MTV Video Music Award nominations? Perry leads this year’s field , as well she should, given that her clips for such hits as “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “E.T.” have become modern classics and racked up millions of online views. But the year has been about a whole lot more than gummy video goodness, so we decided to take a look back and crunch some numbers on the Year in Katy: Explore our “Katy Perry: By The Numbers” infographic: 4 million : Number of digital copies Perry’s “E.T.” has sold so far. In fact, it joins her hits “California Gurls,” “Firework,” “Hot N Cold” and “I Kissed a Girl” in reaching that mark. 48 : That’s the record Perry shattered for the most consecutive weeks with a single inside the top 10, beating out Swedish popsters Ace of Base. 2 : Number of beefs Perry got into with Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. Though it was quickly squashed, for a minute it seemed as if the former Christian singer had dissed Gaga’s “Alejandro” video for its use of religious imagery . Months later, Perry denied taking a swipe at Spears over product placement in Britney’s “Hold it Against Me” video. 4 : Perry came this close to making history this summer when it looked like “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” would become the fifth single from Teenage Dream to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. If she had hit the top (she stalled, ironically at #4), she would have become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off the same album and the first artist of either gender to do it since Michael Jackson (in the period between 1987 and 1988). 2 : Number of times Perry has appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine since Teenage Dream came out. 17 : Shots of Perry’s nearly naked rear end in the “California Gurls” video . (Not like we sat there and counted or anything.) Billions : Amount of Gummi Bears that Perry offended when she cast some nude, crude and middle-finger-flipping rude candy bears in the “Gurls” video. 9 : record-setting number of weeks Eminem’s Recovery would have spent at #1 had Teenage Dream not rained on its parade. 0 : Total number of celebrities besides Perry who have had their “Sesame Street” bits shelved because they showed too much cleavage. 2 : Number of elephants (Laxmi and Mala) involved in Perry and Russell Brand ‘s wedding in India in October. Also involved in the wedding? Jugglers, acrobats, a drum troupe and traditional Indian Rajasthani folk singers and dancers. 0 : Number of famous couples besides Perry and Brand who have flirted and gone on a date and then gotten married after being introduced at the VMAs . The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Big Brother Recap: Fighting For the Crumbs

Last week’s nominees, Keith and Porsche, were both certain they had the votes and didn’t even try to save themselves from eviction ( the joke was on Keith ). This time around, several newbies were scrambling to cut deals and cover their respective backsides before Jordan’s nominations were even announced. Who did she put up, and who do you think stands the better chance of survival? THG breaks down last night’s live episode in a +/- recap below … Porsche is, like, so said to see Keith go. “NOT!” Minus 7 for that sixth-grader style diss, and for how funny she thought she was while delivering it. Adam and Dominic are both convinced the other turned on Keith, when neither of them did! Plus 5 for Shelley’s turncoat vote that no one expects. Pretty poor display by the new kids overall, though. They had the numbers, then coughed it up, and now kiss up, rather pathetically. Minus 7 . Evel Dick left , but his prediction of picking off these weak ass competitors one by one looks spot on. Plus 3 , because we really miss that guy. Only Dominic seems like he gives a crap about fighting back against the big kids and formulating a plan beyond straight up begging. Even if we’re not sure the Daniele mini-alliance will do the trick, Plus 6 for effort. Hopefully Dom and Daniele continue this “showmance” though. We can actually kind of see it, and the season needs a jolt of excitement. Plus 7 . Adam goes the opposite route and tells Jeff he voted against them in Week One. Honestly is the best policy … everywhere but Big Brother . Minus 5 . Rachel in a Princeton shirt reinforces why you can’t assume people attend the colleges whose apparel they sport. Anyone can buy them. Plus 4 . SHOCKINGLY, Brenchel wins the Have-Have Not competition. They could have likely won this one in their sleep, too. Minus 8 for everyone else. Kalia got HURT? Really? They barely even moved! Minus 5 for that horrific display, and Minus 2 more for the comment about Lawon’s future grandkids being up in there. That doesn’t make any sense … why wouldn’t they just be his kids? Minus 3 more for imagining Rachel “on the bottom.” Ugh . Like Human Centipede 2 , that competition was so gross – as much for the commentary as for the visuals – it could have been banned nationwide. Plus 4 . For some reason, Cassi refuses to even try to hide her disdain for Rachel. Not that we don’t understand the sentiment, but Minus 6 for terrible game play. Plus 8 for Lawon and Kalia’s “game play,” because they are such a mess, it’s working in their favor at this point. J-squared never even mentioned them! No need for these floaters to grab a life vest anytime soon. Jeff and Jordan are smart players, and handling the situation as well as anyone could, but Plus only 4 because the competition makes it so easy for them. Adam and Dominic are nominated for eviction. The kid knows he’s up against it big time but doesn’t seem fazed in the least. Don’t count him out. Plus 3 . The season is feeling a bit dull so far. There’s just something missing. Maybe it’s the scheming. Maybe it’s the hookups under night vision. Maybe it’s the screaming matches. Or all of the above. Step it up, guys! Minus 15 . EPISODE TOTAL: -13. SEASON TOTAL: +12.
