MTV’s RapFix hit Odd Future crooner’s NOLA concert a day before he canceled NYC date via Tumblr. By Nadeska Alexis Frank Ocean Photo: MTV News Frank Ocean , Odd Future’s much-buzzed about crooner, seemed to be just getting started when he suddenly canceled his scheduled Sunday show in New York just one hour before his set time citing illness. The jaunt was interrupted only a day after Ocean played the first date on a mini-tour that kicked off in his native New Orleans on Saturday. Back in February, Ocean independently released Nostalgia, Ultra via Tumblr, and since then the popular mixtape has been pegged for re-release on Def Jam, thanks to the hit singles “Swim Good” and “Novacane,” which both made their way from the Internet to the radio. In early October, the 24-year-old singer/songwriter announced plans to embark on an intimate six-city tour in support of the mixtape. The Odd Future member kicked off his short-lived run with a solo show in his hometown of New Orleans on Saturday night, but after performing sound check at the Bowery Ballroom the following day, he canceled the show. While some fans were already lined up outside of the venue, Ocean retreated to Tumblr to pen a new post titled “New York Is Cancelled.” “[O]r should i say postponed,” Ocean wrote. “I played last night in new orleans, on antibiotics and some other meds. got sick a cpl days before i left los angeles. woke up this morning in new york and could barely speak. called a doctor to my hotel, got a steroid shot. took some more meds. laid in bed all day till soundcheck, got to the venue and could barely sing any of my songs. im really sorry yall. i been workin on this show for months, did everything i could to make it special for yall. i’ll be back soon as i’m healthy. thats my word. tickets will be valid for that, or you guys can get refunded. damn this sh–.” During his New Orleans show on Saturday night, it took the shy performer some time to warm up to the crowd. He delivered several tracks from Nostalgia, Ultra, including “Lovecrimes,” “Swim Good” and “Novacane,” while slipping in some material from his upcoming album. Ocean also performed the hooks from his Watch the Throne features “No Church in the Wild” and “Made in America.” Before the cancellation, the tour was expected to stop in the Netherlands, London and Paris before concluding in Los Angeles on November 15; no word yet on whether those shows will go on. First single from Winehouse’s posthumous album premiered on New York’s Hot 97 Wednesday. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: MTV News The world got its first taste of Amy Winehouse ‘s upcoming posthumous album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, when the late singer’s duet with rapper pal Nas premiered on New York’s Hot 97 on Wednesday. The tune from the album, due December 6, is called “Like Smoke,” and it was recorded in May 2008 and produced by Amy’s longtime collaborator Salaam Remi. It features Winehouse singing in her signature slurry blues drawl over a classic Motown downbeat as Mr. Jones serves up some of his knotty verses. In fact, while Winehouse sings the five-line hook on the tune, it is Nas who does the heavy lifting, courtesy of two dense verses packed with references to his personal travails, from love and marriage to taxes, the recession and, way before it was a thing, a line about a tall freak who “wouldn’t protest with me at Wall Street.” “I never wanted you to be my man/ I just need your company,” Winehouse croons over a loping beat, skittering drums and subtle strings and flute. “Don’t want to get dependent on/ Your time then lose the way you love me/ Like smoke, I hung around.” Then it’s Nas’ turn, as the MC breaks off his first rapid-fire verse: “It’s not a movie, this is not a script or proofread/ I’ll spit some untruths to dumb fools and groupies/ Fun to punctuate, pronunciate the funds I make.” The rapper, who split with wife Kelis in 2009, then appears to get personal, rhyming, “Like a polygamist, with a twist/ Will I marry again? Maybe, I guess/ I hold a lady’s interest, I just me/ The love scholar, she the teacher’s pet.” Nas and Winehouse were pals from way back, with the singer name-dropping her New York friend on the track “Me and Mr. Jones” from her breakthrough Back to Black album. Though a press release about the album said the song was tracked as far back as early 2008, Nas’ second verse feels ripped from the headlines . “Yo, this recession is a test/ It’s affecting my complexion/ Misdirection my affection/ My concerns are bill collections,” he rhymes, going on to complain about the tax man coming after him and some impropriety on the part of his money handlers. “Evaluate the world bank trusts like I’m IEG,” he adds. “Tall freak, she wouldn’t protest with me at Wall Street/ She says, no, you’re so deep.” He ends his second verse with a tribute to Winehouse, rapping, “NYC to U.K. I might stay there/ Everybody in the club tonight say, ‘Yeah’/ You know how me and Amy are, straight players.” On Thursday (November 3), Hot 97 also premiered another track from the album, “Our Day Will Come,” Amy’s funky reggae take on the 1960s doo-wop tune by Ruby & the Romantics. Winehouse died in July at age 27 as a result of excessive alcohol intake. Some of the proceeds from the sales of the album will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity set up by the singer’s family to fight addiction. What do you think of the new Winehouse songs? Eva Longoria and Matt Barnes? That’s the rumor of the day. Having divorced San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker in 2010, Eva was rumored to be dating Matt after the New York Post reported a dalliance on Sunday. The Texas-born actress “may have her eye on a new baller,” they said, noting that the two were “very flirty” while dining with friends in NYC Thursday. “There was definitely a spark between Eva and Matt They weren’t seated next to each other, but you could tell there was something between them …” “There was a little hand-holding and a lot of eye contact.” Matt Barnes and Gloria Govan broke up last week, and the NBA is locked out, freeing him up to potentially court Longoria. But she says it’s not true. At all. The 36-year-old Desperate Housewives star slammed the story on her Who Say account, “First Jessica Simpson, now this. Once again, press gets it wrong.” “Let me be very clear, Matt Barnes and I are not dating!” Jessica Simpson is pregnant though. We got that right. “We are doing a charity event together for Padres and Athletes vs. Cancer,” Eva explained further. “Why is the truth never the headline? Why did I bother to comment when they put your statement at end of articles? #stillannoying.” The eternal question of the celebrity gossip age. [Photo: WENN.com]
